Strong winds aloft ahead of the trough will lead to gusty winds on Saturday with gusts up to 45 mph in valleys and 80 to 90 mph across Sierra ridges. Snow showers for Lake Tahoe are expected to follow, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
There's a 20 percent chance of snow showers on Saturday with mostly cloudy conditions. The high temperature is expected to be near 46. Less than an inch of snow is possible.
Meanwhile, on Sunday morning a southern branch of a stronger trough is expected to bring the best energy into region. The system will keep precipitation in the Sierra from Lake Tahoe southward into Mono County with 3 to 6 inches of snow possible above 7,000 feet. As the low rotates inland, moisture will wrap around and bring rain and snow into Western Nevada by Monday morning. Precipitation for the region is expected through next week.
