Changes on the South Shore: SUP Tahoe and South Shore Bikes have new home

To make room for the new Bev Mo in South Lake Tahoe, SUP Tahoe and South Shore Bikes needed to find a new home. A long abandoned restaurant on Hwy89 was torn down, a new building put up and now the two local businesses have a new home.
Bingo, Champions Plaza and budget all on South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda

In an effort to clean up the city's code, City Attorney Tom Watson has been evaluating and updating all rules in the books, and the Bingo rules are part of this change.
Plastic Bag Ban headed to the Governor Brown's desk

A ban on single use plastic bags is already in place in South Lake Tahoe and 90 other cities and counties in the state of California, but that may soon change. If Governor Brown signs the bill that was sent to him on Friday, the whole state will have a ban on plastic bags for grocery stores and large pharmacies in 2015 and convenience stores in 2016.

"Many hands make for light work" is a true phenomenon here at Bijou School. Since 2007, with the inception of the Two Way Immersion program, and our forced volunteering program, the parents, staff and community members have consistently been spending time, funds, and those blood, sweat and tears we always talk about at this school. The new playground, as well as the field and park behind it, is a tangible representation of the volunteer force here at Bijou.

Sharpnack, the CEO of the Institute for Women’s Leadership, has facilitated women’s leadership trainings for such Fortune 500 companies as Microsoft, Charles Schwab, and Hewlett Packard.

"Confronting Effects of Climate Change" to be theme of 18th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit

California Senator Diane Feinstein will host the 18th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday, August 19 being held on the lawn at Valhalla. The theme for the day is Drought, Wildfire and Invasive Species: Confronting the Effects of Climate Change on Lake Tahoe.
The public is invited to attend. Preregistration is over so plan on registering at Valhalla on the 19th starting at 9 a.m. The main program will start at 10 am.
Understanding “Inpatient” versus “Outpatient” hospital admission status

Sound familiar? In October 2013, Medicare enacted the “two-midnight rule” to discourage hospital inpatient admissions. Medicare patients staying longer than two midnights in the hospital, excluding discharge, may be considered inpatients. Medicare patients that stay less than two midnights typically receive outpatient or “observation status.”
City Council reduces South Lake Tahoe parking garage rates for retailers
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/05/2014 - 10:04pmParking rates for Heavenly Village retailers wishing to validate customer's tickets were lowered from $1.50 per hour to $1 per hour in Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. The movie theater validations were lowered from four hours to three hours as well.

Children and their families are invited by U.C. Davis to visit their Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on Saturday, August 9 for a day of hand's on activities.
The 15th annual event is free and sponsored by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center. Children's Environmental Science Day includes more than 30 interactive science activities hosted by local organizations, all aimed at children ages 6 and up.

Celebrity Golf fans will soon find out how the retired golfer who had to "dust the rust off her clubs" will play at Edgewood in her first American Century Golf Tournament this weekend.
Favored to win the tournament, Sorenstam reminded those at a press conference Thursday that she hasn't played much since retiring, and while she has played under the Stableford method that isn't how she won so many tournaments during her career.

A candidates forum for the El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor race will be held on July 29th at 6:30 p.m. at the California Conservation Corps (CCC) Tahoe Center building in Meyers.
The forum was rescheduled from it's original date of July 22.
TahoeChamber, Tahoe Daily Tribune and Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will host the forum in anticipation of the November election in which two candidates, Kenny Curtzwiler and Sue Novasel, will campaign for the position to be vacated by current Supervisor Norma Santiago.
Opinion: Plastic bag ban or not, it's up to us to do the right thing
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/13/2014 - 9:07pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe imposed a single use, plastic bag ban for grocery stores in the city limits in October of 2013. The original ordinance was for grocery stores to implement the new policy on January 15, 2014 and for all other retail outlets to begin on October 15. During the June 17th City Council meeting, three Council members decided that the ban on all other retail outlets should be postponed and the final vote on that will be during this week's Council meeting.
Drug Free Coaltion working to prevent drug use for South Lake Tahoe youth

BMPs Back in the Forefront With TRPA; May Be Part of Lake Tahoe Real Estate Transactions
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/09/2014 - 6:18amWith less than 50% of the Lake Tahoe basin homeowners not complying with mandates to install Best Management Practices (BMPs) on their properties, the TRPA is looking for ways to get people on board.
The proposal being currently discussed is to make BMPs mandatory at Point of Sale for a home as well as discussion of them during the transaction's disclosure process. This discussion at the TRPA BMP Compliance Worksing Group meeting Tuesday brought a packed house of mostly Lake Tahoe real estate agents and brokers.
Grand Jury Report Released for El Dorado County: "Thread of Dysfunction"

According to Jury Foreman Neil Cunningham, the jury compiled 20 reports and recommendations which were created as they followed up on inquiries from citizens and Grand Jury required inspections.
2nd Phase of South Lake Tahoe Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance to be Delayed

In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.

Youth and teens ages 6 to 16 can use this summer to explore Lake Tahoe by enjoying field trips, swimming, going to the beach and many other activities, all in a safe and fun environment.
Sue Novasel Still Leads Supervisor Race But Her Opponent Is Now Uncertain

Sue Novasel and Kevin Brown were in the lead after Tuesday's election for the District 5 seat on the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. Novasel came out on top with Brown coming in second and with the top two vote getters proceeding to the November runoff most assumed it would be those two names they'd see on the ballot.
Polling Location Change for Meyers Voters

You will vote at the California Conservation Corp (CCC). This is the only Meyers location as the Lake Valley Fire Department location is not open this year.
Editorial: Historic Hangtown Due For Political Culture Change

The county in historic Gold Country stretches from the tony estates of El Dorado Hills to the vacation resorts of South Lake Tahoe, but its government is still stuck firmly in Hangtown.
That’s the old handle of Placerville, county seat of El Dorado. There’s a historical marker noting the old hanging tree just down Main Street from the county courthouse.

Child Abuse Prevention Month: No Child Deserves to be Hurt or Neglected
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/25/2014 - 10:47pmApril is Child Abuse Prevention Month and in honor of raising awareness, it is time we discuss this silent tragedy present on a daily basis in our community. The simple truth is that no child deserves to be hurt.
Unfortunately, the reason I have a job is due to the overwhelming presence of child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence in society. I stand strongly behind my job and the importance of raising awareness of the impact that child abuse has on our community and providing people with the tools to stop the violence.
SLT DMV Reschedules Remodeling; Closing For Two Days
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/25/2014 - 10:35pmThe South Lake Tahoe office of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was scheduled to close last month for renovations, but due to stormy weather they postponed the project. The DMV announced today that they will be closing the office for two days in May to replace the carpet.
They are alerting local customers that their office, located at 3344 Lake Tahoe Blvd #B, will be closing for renovations on Friday, May 9, 2014, at 12 p.m.
Human Trafficking in El Dorado County on the Rise; Presentation at County Supervisor's Meeting Tuesday

From 2010 to 2012, the El Dorado County Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) was aware of 3 CSEC cases. From 2013 to present, HHSA is aware of 15 additional CSEC cases, most of which are children in the foster care and/or probation system.

Causes of Oral, Head, & Neck Cancer
Tobacco use is the most common and preventable cause of head and neck cancer. Tobacco products include cigarettes, snuff and chewing tobacco. Switching from smoking to smokeless products only changes the risk of lung cancer to a risk of oral cancer.

Barton Skilled Nursing volunteers wear many hats. They play inspiring music, bring communion, and call bingo. Volunteers turn an ordinary birthday party into a trip down memory lane with music from the past. Musicians share ukulele, piano, and organ music with our residents. They honor our vets. Some volunteers bring in their pets to lick faces and shower our residents with love. Other groups bring church to Skilled Nursing residents every Sunday.
Barton Hospital Now Smoke Free; 8 Week Smoking Cessation Class Offered

The smoking and tobacco ban includes all Barton Health facilities, parking lots, grounds, and Barton Memorial Hospital. All patients, visitors, medical staff, vendors, and employees will not be allowed to smoke at Barton. This includes the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, marijuana smoking, and smoke-free tobacco products such as chewing tobacco. The one exception will be for the two current patients at the Skilled Nursing Center who smoke. No further smoking patients for the center will be accepted.
South Lake Tahoe Area Plan Amended to Accommodate Edgewood Change
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/01/2014 - 9:04pmAs Edgewood Properties moves forward with their plans to reconfigure holes on their golf course to accommodate for a new lake front lodge, they asked the City of South Lake Tahoe City Council today for a change in the area's general plan. The original Edgewood Tahoe plans were to have 100% of the golf course in the state of Nevada, but have now altered those plans to have some of the course venture into California on Edgewood owned land.
Community’s Support Needed to Make 4-Year Degrees Possible at LTCC

In my three years working at LTCC, it is clear to me that the college is here in this beautiful location because a group of dedicated people had a vision of higher education in Tahoe, and the determination to make sure it happened. We are now at a crossroads due to changes in funding, community college priorities, and statutes.

Cycle Through Wine Country to Support Keeping Tahoe Blue

Riders will help raise awareness of climate change, alternative modes of transportation and the effort to Keep Tahoe Blue.

Snow Expected Tuesday Night in South Lake Tahoe

A cold front located over the Pacific will move into the Sierra on Tuesday with wind gusts Tuesday afternoon into evening reaching 45 mph in valley locations and ridge gusts up to 100 mph. These winds will result in choppy lake waters and blowing dust on I-80 and highways 50 and 95.
Too Early to Tell Success of New Trash Pick Up Times in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/21/2014 - 3:13pmSince March 3rd, trash pick up times in South Lake Tahoe have been moved to two hours later in an effort to reduce wildlife problems and clean up, according to South Tahoe Refuse, protect our unique environment.
While it's too early to tell if the later times will keep bears out of local trash, both Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care and the Bear League say they feel it will make a big difference.
Lake Tahoe Loses 5 Feet of Clarity in 2013; Winter Waters Clearer, Summer's Declining
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/13/2014 - 10:21pmClarity levels within the iconic blue waters of Lake Tahoe continued a decadelong trend of stabilization in 2013, according to University of California, Davis, scientists who study the lake.
Data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC)and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency reported the average annual clarity level for 2013 at 70.1 feet. While the reading represents a 5 foot decrease over the previous year, it is still well above the lowest value recorded in 1997 of 64.1 feet and above recent years' averages.
South Lake Tahoe DMV to Close for Renovations

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is alerting local customers that the office, located at 3344 South Lake Tahoe Blvd #B will be closed so to plan ahead.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Asks: What Do You Want to See at the Y?

Most agreed that the area known as the "Y" needs to be changed with an area plan, but which direction to a take to a final plan is where people differ.
The evening consisted of a presentation by John Hitchcock, who is on loan to the city from the TRPA for this project as Planning Project Manager. After he spoke the group broke out into three breakout sessions, each focuses on one of three choices presented as the future concept for "Y" area.
Stateline Casinos Have Another Losing Month in January
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/28/2014 - 7:04amCasinos at South Lake Tahoe saw a 12.43% drop in gaming profits for the month of January, 2014 according to a report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
The Stateline casinos took in $14,698,597 in gaming-related profits or "win" in January, down from the prior year's $16,784,196. Their fiscal year to date change is a decrease of 3.44% with $136,138,827 in gaming revenues.
South Lake Tahoe Parking Initiative: "Fix It and Not Nix It"
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/18/2014 - 10:33pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe is letting the voters decide the future of paid parking in the city limits during the next election on June 3, 2014. Voters will be able to either approve or repeal the city's paid parking ordinance.
During Tuesday night's City Council session, several options were voted on that address concerns the public had on paid parking. They will go into effect immediately, well ahead of the election.

Large Group Shows Up to Hear About South Lake Tahoe Airport Master Plan

An overflowing crowd showed up at the South Lake Tahoe City Council chambers Thursday night to hear about the process involved in preparing the upcoming plan for the future of the airport, why a new plan is needed and what it takes to replace the outdated 1992 Master Plan.
South Lake Tahoe Residents Have Many Upcoming Opportunities to be Involved in the Future of the City
