Kirkwood has scheduled Chair #6 – Cornice Express to offer top to bottom skiing & riding. Mammoth Mtn. & Mt Rose also open top to bottom. More snow predicted to come through with a Winter Storm Watch starting Wednesday.

60-foot South Lake Tahoe community tree cut for Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rockefeller Center in New York City has a Christmas tree as a backdrop for all holiday activities in the Big City since 1933, and now South Lake Tahoe is starting what hopes to be an annual tradition. Standing at 60-feet, the local version isn't quite as big as their neighbor on the East Coast (which runs 60-100 feet and can weigh close to 30,000 pounds), but it serve as a place to warm hearts and be a center of holiday photos and fun.

No rain or snow in sight, above average highs in forecast

November 11 update: The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Lake Wind
Advisory for Lake Tahoe, which is in effect from 6:00 p.m. Saturday to 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Winds will be from the northeast to east 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Wave Heights: 2 to 3 feet. Highest waves from mid-lake to the western shores.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Cold overnight temperatures are allowing ski resort snowmaking teams to get a snow base going, but there is no snowstorm activity forecast in the near future.

Vail resorts in Lake Tahoe prepare for November opening dates

With a drop in overnight temperatures, Heavenly and Northstar's snowmaking teams have fired up their snow guns to lay down a good base in time for their opening days before Thanksgiving.

They are working towards the following opening days: Friday, Nov. 16 at Heavenly and Northstar and Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Kirkwood.

What does winter have in store for Lake Tahoe and the West?

With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center report released Thursday, it looks like Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada will be warmer than average and experience an average precipitation year.

A mild winter could be in store for much of the United States this winter according to the report. In the U.S. Winter Outlook for December through February, above-average temperatures are most likely across the northern and western U.S., Alaska and Hawaii.

Additionally, a weak El Nino has a 70 to 75 percent chance of developing.

Ready for some rain and upper elevation snow in Lake Tahoe?

An unsettled weather pattern and further cooling looks likely for the upcoming week in Lake Tahoe with the best chances for rain from Tuesday through Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Reno (NWS RENO), dry conditions will prevail today through most of Monday, with areas of mid-high level cloud cover especially on Monday ahead of the next low pressure system approaching the California coast. There is a complex weather scenario setting up for Tuesday-Wednesday

Body of man missing in Lake Tahoe recovered

The body of the 33-year-old man who went missing in Lake Tahoe on September 8, 2018 was located by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) and then recovered on Monday, September 17.

Cameron Park man identified as Sunday's missing swimmer in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Cameron Park, California man has been identified as the swimmer who went missing in Lake Tahoe on Sunday, September 9, 2018.

Multiple agencies responded to the 5:36 p.m. call for help and a possible drowning on the lake near Nevada Beach including the Coast Guard, Tahoe Douglas Fire Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, El Dorado County Sheriff (EDSO) and Douglas County Sheriff's Offices (DCSO).

Search called off for person reported missing in Lake Tahoe

11:00 a.m. update 9/11/18 - Douglas County Sheriff's Office is reporting that two men went into the water and that one, a man in his 30s, has not been found at this time. The other man was transported to the hospital.

On Monday, underwater drones and K9s were used in the water along with law enforcement boats to aid in the search.

Howie Nave takes his comedy to Carson City this weekend

Comedian Howie Nave is taking his show on the road, this time to the Carson Comedy Club inside the Carson Nugget September 7 and 8.

Many around South Lake Tahoe know Howie from his number one morning drive radio show "Howie's Morning Rush" on KRLT-FM (krltfm.com) and from his years of comedy on the South Shore. He has long been a staple in the world of stand up. How long? There's a plaque with his name on it near the entrance of South Lake Tahoe that's he's called home now for almost 18 years.

Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers pick up 224 pounds of trash along North Shore beaches

Early on the morning of September 3, 2018, over 70 Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers arrived at Commons Beach in Tahoe City to comb the sands along six miles of shoreline in search of items left behind by those enjoying the previous night’s fireworks festivities.

They collected 224 pounds of litter including 2,064 cigarette butts and 1,520 pieces of plastic. League to Save Lake Tahoe staff ship the cigarette butts to a company on the east coast that upcycles them into new plastic products. Plastic cannot be upcycled and end up in landfills.

Five boaters near Kings Beach rescued after boat takes on water

The Coast Guard and Placer County Marine unit crews rescued five boaters whose 45-foot recreational vessel was taking on water near King's Beach in Lake Tahoe on Sunday, September 2, 2018.

The captain of the recreational vessel issued a distress call via VHF FM channel 16 around 9:30 p.m., reporting his boat was taking on water.

Ferguson Fire 100% contained; firefighters gaining control on most others

There are still several fires burning in California but firefighters have gained the upper hand on many of them.

Ferguson Fire: The Ferguson Fire is now at 96,901 acres with 100 percent containment and 881 personnel currently engaged on the fire. During the most critical time in the fire, over 3,000 people were assigned to the incident from all over the world. There have been 2 fatalities and 19 injuries. 10 structures have been destroyed.

Keeping regions safe: Pre-positioning of firefighters this week in Lake Tahoe

For just the second time, fire crews from California communities came together and stationed themselves in a community other than their own on orders from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services(Cal OES).

A red flag warning was up for the Lake Tahoe Basin Friday and Saturday, with high winds, high temperatures and low humidity in the forecast making the situation ripe for a large fire.

California man drowns in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.

The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Search continues for swimmer missing in Lake Tahoe

Two-person police team protecting South Lake Tahoe waters

A day on the lake is a dream come true for many, but for two South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers it's another day at the office. As they navigate Lake Tahoe they are looking for speeders, unsafe practices, life vests, drunk boaters and boat registrations, as well as responding to life threatening crashes and drownings.

"It's our little city out here," explained Steve O'Brien who has manned the South Lake Tahoe police boat for 17 summers.

Fireworks barge catches fire in Lake Tahoe

Two hours after the Lights on the Lake fireworks show ended on July 4, one of three barges used in the show caught on fire.

The fireworks crews on board attempted to put out the fire with fire extinguishers but were unable to suppress the flames. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) monitors the show each year and weren't far away. At 12:27 a.m. July 5, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District responded with their new fire boat, Marine 24, and doused the fire within six minutes.

There were no injuries.

Coast Guard rescues teen paddle boarders on Lake Tahoe

The Coast Guard rescued two stand-up paddle boarders who were observed struggling on Lake Tahoe, Tuesday afternoon.

A good Samaritan called 911 at approximately 4:00 p.m., reporting two teenage boys adrift and struggling to paddle upwind near Rubicon Point on Lake Tahoe, which was relayed to Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe watchstanders.

A Station Lake Tahoe 25-foot response boat crew was dispatched to the scene. The crew took the paddlers aboard and transported them to Lester Beach with no reported injuries.

South Lake Tahoe twins headed to Boys and Girls State

It has always been an amazing accomplishment for a student from South Tahoe High to be selected to go to either Boy's State or Girl's State, programs sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.

For the first time organizers can remember, twins have been selected to represent the community in the unique and exciting government-in-action learning programs which teach youth how to be knowledgeable stewards of freedom, democracy and patriotism.

Sunny and warm forecast, but first.... windy and chance of thunderstorms

There is a Lake Wind Advisory up for Lake Tahoe for Wednesday, May 30, starting at noon and lasting until 9:00 p.m.

A cycle of pleasant mornings and thunderstorms with rain in the afternoons will possibly repeat for two more days. A low pressure is approaching the west coast. This low will move inland and bring gusty winds Wednesday and Thursday, along with some cooling and continued chances for showers and thunderstorms.

By Friday, generally dry conditions move in with a warming trend through the weekend.

Ceremony for SLT police awards and retirement of K9 Tara moved

Due to the chance of inclement weather on Thursday, May 17, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department Annual Awards Ceremony held in honor of Peace Officer Memorial Week has been moved to the City Council Chambers located at 1901 Airport Road.

The event starts at 4:00 p.m. and will include awards, the retirement of K9 Tara, and the swearing in ceremony of recently selected Sergeant, Jeffrey Roberson.

The 10-year-old Tara's handler is Sergeant Jason Cheney.

Sunny start to the week in South Lake Tahoe

Las Vegas Grand Jury indicts 36 for international cyber crimes

A federal indictment was unsealed last week, charging 36 individuals for their alleged roles in the Infraud Organization, an Internet-based cybercriminal enterprise engaged in the large-scale acquisition, sale, and dissemination of stolen identities, compromised debit and credit cards, personally identifiable information, financial and banking information, computer malware, and other contraband.

Olympic viewing schedule for Jamie Anderson and Maddie Bowman

Record high temperature in South Lake Tahoe

It was an overcast start to what turned out to be the warmest January 30 on record in South Lake Tahoe. A high of 56 degrees was reached on the South Shore.

The previous high of 54 for this date occurred in both 1989 and 2012.

Reno, Nevada also had a new record Tuesday with their high of 68, three degrees higher than the previous high from 2003.

Mild week ahead in South Lake Tahoe, no precipitation in forecast

It could be awhile before South Lake Tahoe has any precipitation as an upper level ridge is in place and will provide an extended period of dry conditions with above normal temperatures for much of the upcoming week and possibly into mid-February. The blocking high pressure is building off the the West Coast according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The only weather event in the near future are the breezy conditions that can be expected Tuesday as a dry front passes by the region.

Records could be equaled or fall on Monday and Tuesday.

Fast moving storm expected to drop 5-8" of snow at lake level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A fast moving storm system will reach the Sierra on Wednesday, January 24, bringing with it wind, snow and rain before it leaves as quickly as it arrived.

A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday for Lake Tahoe. Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Waves will be 2-4 feet with the highest mid-lake to to north and east shores. Winds will continue into Wednesday evening as a Winter Weather Advisory starts at 4:00 p.m.

Two weather systems headed to Lake Tahoe this week

Winter will finally make an appearance to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada and Northern Nevada by the end of the week and even into next week as well. A much welcomed Sierra snow will be on tap, as a colder, stronger storm is set to move into the region according to the National Weather Service in Reno. This will bring the first significant snowfall to the Sierra that we`ve seen in a while.

The latest weather models continue to show a weak to moderate Atmospheric River (AR) moving into the Sierra, combining with much colder temperatures behind the cold front.

The Tides Project donates to Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Local female business owner, Karly Matzen of The Tides Project, sells her crafts online and trade shows throughout the Tahoe basin. You make have seen The Tides Project booth at the Made In Tahoe festival or Live at Lakeview this summer. In return, 10% of her sales goes back to funding art programs. Her vision is to bring supplies to the community in order to support a positive outlet for youth through the Arts.

Temperatures well above normal as we ring in 2018

Temperatures are well above normal in Lake Tahoe and there is no snow in sight, for now. The highs will be in the 50s and will be close to record breaking.

There is a persistent ridge of high pressure along the West Coast, preventing major storms from breaking through and bringing snow to Lake Tahoe. Expect things to not change through New Year's Day, but there is some hope for precipitation at the end of next week.

A front will drop down near Susanville this weekend, but nothing is expected further south, but temperatures will drop a couple of degrees.

Above average temperatures, and no snow, in Lake Tahoe forecast

Abundant mid and high clouds and periods of gusty winds in the high Sierra are expected through the weekend, leaving Lake Tahoe with party sunny conditions for Christmas. Abundant mid and high clouds and periods of gusty winds in the high Sierra are expected through the weekend.

A very weak system is passing through Northeastern California and Northern Nevada next week, and with it comes a very slight chance of snow coming into the Lake Tahoe Basin, but more precipiation will be staying near the Oregon border.

Rotarians honor Lake Tahoe area veterans

Those who serve the community honored those who served the country during the annual Tahoe Douglas Rotary Veteran's Day celebration Friday.

Club member Brian Williams, US Marines (retired), organized this year's event as he does each year, inviting local veterans for lunch and a program. The Marine Corps 242nd birthday fell on the event this year, and the former Marine had a special birthday for the attendees to enjoy.

They combine gritty, hard-hitting, West Coast hip-hop with rebel country and rock influences. Good Ol' Boyz have created a style all their own. Crazed fans of the group range from 15 to 60 years old from all walks of life.

RonnyRon the Outlaw, Kali J Wild, and Remington, create music that explores the life of an outlaw living in the California country.

New York performer returns home to teach South Lake Tahoe youth

New York performer and choreographer Sebastiani Romagnolo grew up dancing with Marcia Sarosik at her South Lake Tahoe dance studio, and he returned to those roots this week to help teach the next generation of performers.

The 2007 South Tahoe High and 2011 New York University (NYU) graduate took time out his hectic east coast schedule to head west to visit family in South Lake Tahoe, and visits to town always include a stop by Sarosik's studio.

Many may remember his talent as he headlined many South Tahoe High musicals, and now he's entertaining audiences in New York.

Coast Guard and Tahoe Douglas Fire respond to boater in distress

Tahoe Douglas Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a distress call Thursday evening after a sailor was unable to make it back to shore with the high winds on Lake Tahoe.

The unidentified man called for help about 5:15 p.m. when he was about one-quarter mile off the shore at Cave Rock. Winds were stronger than he thought and was unable to make it to the Cave Rock boat ramp where he put the 10-12 foot boat in.

Tahoe Douglas Fire was able to help the man get to Cedarbrook, north of Cave Rock where he moored the boat. There were no injuries.

Full weekend of activities in South Lake Tahoe

Lots to do in South Lake Tahoe this weekend. Now that South Tahoe and Whittell High Schools had their homecoming games Friday night, the rest of the weekend can be filled with everything from helping feed local youth, buying mattresses or playing golf for the high school, honoring one of the City's first leaders and enjoying the annual Fire Fest.

The Battle Born Harley Davidson Street Vibrations Fall Rally will be held in Carson City from Wednesday, September 27 through Sunday, October 1 from 9:00 a.m. until "the last bike leaves."

The event is free and will include over 70 vendors, the area’s largest beer garden, live music, West Coast Connection stunt shows, burnouts and all of your favorite food trucks. All of this makes this annual party one not to miss.

The Harley-Davidson Demo Truck will also be there with 18 brand new models that can be taken for a test ride on Friday and Saturday.

Warming temps for South Lake Tahoe

Clear skies and light winds are expected through the coming week as a ridge of high pressure along the west coast gradually strengthens, leading a slow warming trend.

Aside from some freezing fog near Truckee and the Sierra Valley, benign conditions remain on tap for the near future as that high pressures continues to build. According to some modules, there is the potential for cooler and wetter weather toward the end of the first week of October, but in the meantime its dry with above normal temperatures by the weekend.

South Lake Tahoe fire stations stocked with loaner life jackets

The use of life jackets saves lives, especially on Lake Tahoe where Cold Water Shock can kill a person in minutes.

It has been a deadly year on the lake, and the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) department has started a new program to help save lives in the future.

California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) has partnered with SLTFR in making life jackets available to the public on a loan basis. They have infant, child and adult sizes.

Rain and thunder return to Lake Tahoe; Drier by the end of week

A low pressure system is off the California coast through Tuesday night, bringing with it chances for showers and thunderstorms starting Monday afternoon. Tuesday through Wednesday will bring more widespread thunderstorm coverage. Drier weather returns by Friday as a front moves through the region. Above average temperatures through Monday will cool to near or slightly below average by late week according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
