SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The message was clear during Tuesday's emergency City Council meeting: Disregard the safety of people in South Lake Tahoe - Face a fine.
For almost four hours the South Lake Tahoe City Council listened to several residents commenting on a desired city response to the pandemic. While many other discusses will be coming up in the near future, the council took steps towards protecting the community with leverage and enforcement.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials have announced an additional 22 cases of COVID-19 since Monday. Sixteen of those cases are in the Lake Tahoe region, three in El Dorado Hills, one each in in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, Greater Placerville and Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue. In the new group of positive cases, four are aged under 18, 13 aged 18-49, three aged 50-64 and two aged 65 and over.
Gardnerville resident released from 26-day stay at Carson Tahoe Hospital

Yesterday at approximately 4:20 p.m., Carson Tahoe Health wheeled its first COVID-positive, intubated patient, Linda McCain, out of the Regional Medical Center and back home to her family.
The Gardnerville resident had been in their care for 26 days.
Staff gathered in an Honor Walk to cheer on McCain, who had been using a ventilator to assist in breathing and fighting the severe respiratory illness, COVID-19. She was brought to tears by the support of Carson Tahoe throughout her stay, as well as during her farewell, as were several staff members.

Barton Foundation awards $100,000 in community health grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Barton Foundation has awarded a record $100,000 in its annual Community Health Grant funding. This is in addition to more than $170,000 in grants given to local families and individuals from its COVID-19 Response Fund.
The 13 Lake Tahoe-based organizations that were awarded share Barton Health’s commitment to addressing the most urgent health needs in the area: mental and behavioral health, substance use, and access to care.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials announced another 22 positive cases of COVID-19 in the county since Friday. Eight of those are in El Dorado Hills, seven in the Lake Tahoe region, two in each Pollock Pine/Camin/Kyburz, North County and Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and one in South County. Of those, four are under the age of 18, nine aged between 18-49, five aged 50-64 and four aged 65 or older.
Smoke from Loyalton Fire leads to postponement of Washoe County school start

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Students in the Washoe County School District will not be going back to school as planned on Monday, August 17. COVID-19 didn't delay the start but heavy smoke and unhealthy air from the Loyalton Fire did.
The fire had consumed over 28,000 acres as of Sunday, prompting officials to delay the start at all schools in the district except for those in Lake Tahoe. Both Incline Elementary and High Schools had a scheduled start of school for August 31.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe is the vacation destination for millions of people annually, but recent behaviors of many of the tourists have the residents on edge. Trash is being left behind on beaches, trails and picnic areas, overflowing trash containers are shown daily on social media pages, stores are packed and roads are crowded, all during a pandemic while travel orders are still in place for the California.
With international travel at a standstill many are keeping their vacationing during the coronavirus to locations near their homes, and Lake Tahoe is one of those spots.

South Lake Tahoe did not lead the group which is the norm and had five positive cases. El Dorado Hills had 14, Greater Placerville with 3, Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue had two, and one in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Originally planned for June, then postponed to September, the popular $5 Dump Day in South Lake Tahoe has been canceledfor 2020.
Organizers will return in 2021 with both spring and fall dump events planned. They said the dump days rely heavily on personal contact, and with the socially distancing requirements to keep COVID-19 at bay, they decided there was no way to hold one at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 18th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids’ Fishing Derby has been canceled due to the pandemic. The Lodge has sponsored the tournament at Lake Baron inside Tahoe Paradise Park for 17 years and said they feel it important to follow state and county guidelines to avoid group gatherings and the safety and protection of children is paramount.
The Lodge had been planning on having the Optimists Club as co-sponsors this September after the Optimists had to cancel their fishing derby at Sawmill Pond earlier this summer.
$30,000 grants available through El Dorado County small business and non-profit relief fund

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A small business relief fund has been set up to assist in alleviating debt caused by the pandemic and COVID-10 related issues.
El Dorado County (EDC) has established a $5M Small Business Relief Fund through El Dorado Community Foundation (EDCF) to assist in coordinating the the Small Business Relief Fund with assistance from the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce, El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce, and the Tahoe Chamber.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another nine positive cases of COVID-19 were documented on Thursday. Of those, five are in the Lake Tahoe region, two in El Dorado Hills, and one each in Greater Placerville and the North County. The new cases are eight people aged 18-49, and one aged 50-64.
Another 382 tests were administered and 373 negative test results were received.
Currently there are 155 assumed active cases and 11 assumed recoveries.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another eight people have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday, bringing the total of 793 cases to date. Of the new cases, four are from the Lake Tahoe region, two from El Dorado Hills, one from Greater Placerville and one from South County. In those counts, four are aged 18-49, three aged 50-64 and one aged 65 or older.
An additional 350 people have been tested for coronavirus. There were 342 negative test results received today and 24 assumed recoveries. The current assume positive case load is 157 in the county.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health official have announced another 30 positive cases of COVID-19 since yesterday. Of the new cases, ten are in the Lake Tahoe region, nine in El Dorado Hills, four in Greater Placerville, four in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, two in the North County and one in Diamond Springs, El Dorado. There was one aged under 18, 16 in the age group 18-49, eight aged 50-64 and 5 aged 65 or older.
Another 559 tests were administered. The county was notified of 529 negative results and 17 assumed recoveries. There are 173 assumed active cases.
Construction temporarily stopped on South Lake Tahoe Greenway trail due to material delay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Work had been underway on two phases of the 3.86-mile long South Tahoe Greenway Shared-Use Trail but activity has come to a temporary halt due to material issues.
COVID-19 resulted in delayed delivery of materials for the precast concrete boardwalk system needed on the trail. The Houston, Texas concrete plant contracted for the project has been directly impacted.
Free weekly COVID testing in Kirkwood and Woodfords

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - There is a new schedule for COVID testing in Woodfords in Alpine County. Starting this week, testing will take place every week on Thursdays instead of the previous every other week schedule. These tests are for those with or without symptoms.
Tests are in the parking lot of Alpine County Health and Human Services in Woodfords, across the street from the Fire Station.

STATELINE, Nev. - While the crowds weren't there in 2020 for the 31st annual American Century Championship in July due to COVID-19 safety concerns, its impacts will be felt for years to come by the community. The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) will distribute a record $250,000 to local non-profits after the players in the popular celebrity tournament gave up the $600,000 in prize money. It is all being donated to Covid-19 relief organizations, equal justice initiatives and South Tahoe-based non-profits.

Of those, two are from the Lake Tahoe region, five in El Dorado Hills, three in the Greater Placerville region and three in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue. Leadership Lake Tahoe is a ten-month-long course held every two years on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. It began in 2003 with a mission to identify and develop current and future leaders through a comprehensive program designed to increase knowledge and awareness of the issues and challenges facing our community. At the beginning, the program was sponsored by the Tahoe Douglas Chamber and South Lake Tahoe Chamber, they merged a few years later and became the Tahoe Chamber (or Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Every ten years a Census is taken of all people living in the Unitied States. While the state of California currently has a 64.5 percent response rate, South Lake Tahoe once again is lagging far behind.
As of August 6, 28.1 percent of those living in South Lake Tahoe had turned in answers to the Census Bureau. El Dorado County as a whole, 58.6 percent. Nationally, the Census return rate is 63.2 percent.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials said another 14 people have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of the new cases, 11 are from the Lake Tahoe region and three are from the Greater Placerville region, ten are aged 18-49, three are aged 50-64 and one is aged 65 or older.
92 tests were administered since yesterday, 78 tests came back negative and there were 13 assumed recoveries. At this time there are 178 assumed active cases.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Issues with the state's CalREDIE system is currently impacting the data in California, including El Dorado County. Not all of the negative results are listed so the county positivity rate is showing above the state's eight percent threshold, which is inaccurate.
Additionally, instructions about what residents should do after they've been tested are being emailed to those who tested at the Lake Tahoe Community College site due to delays.

The virtual ceremony had just a few attendees due to COVID-19 restrictions, but many were able to log onto their phones and computers and watch the 25-year veteran of the force, and South Tahoe High graduate, move into the top spot in the police department.

Four properties face fines from Nevada Gaming Control Board for improper COVID-19 operation

The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) has completed 10,135 inspections and opened 156 regulatory cases since gaming properties were able to reopen on June 4 after they were closed for over two months. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say there are 24 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county, 15 of those in the Lake Tahoe area. The remaining nine new cases are spread out: five in El Dorado Hills, two are in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, one in Placerville, and one in North South County. Of these 24, two are under the age of 18, 20 are aged 18-49, one aged 50-64 and one aged 65 and older.
There were 71 tests for the virus given since yesterday, and 47 negative tests were returned.
Tahoe East Shore Trail to close temporarily for tunnel art project

The Tahoe East Shore Trail will be temporarily closed to public access between the Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor on Tuesday, August 4 (all day), and Wednesday, August 5 through Friday, August 7 (after 8:00 p.m.) for the initial phase of a community mural art project.
The Tahoe Fund, Tahoe Public Art and Nevada State Parks collaborated to commission the mural to augment the natural beauty of the Tahoe East Shore Trail and transform a utilitarian tunnel into a community-involved, relevant art experience.

The county was notified 124 test results came back as negative, and there have been 16 likely recoveries.

Fifteen of those are in the Lake Tahoe region, four in El Dorado Hills, two both Placerville and Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and one in the North County. This brings the total number of cases since the pandemic started to 579, 209 of those most likely still active.
Ildefonsa Balwing ~ 1955 - 2020

Ildefonsa Balwing, age 65, passed away on July 22, 2020 in Riverside, California after a short, but hard fought, cancer diagnosis. She was born January 23, 1955 in Tanay, Rizal in the Philippines and was the tenth of eleven children in her family.
Mammoth Lakes added to state's monitoring list; Truckee/North Lake Tahoe ask visitors to stay away on weekends

To help stop the spread of the coronavirus, California Governor Gavin Newsom has added more counties to his "watch list," those showing concerning trends in rates of COVID-19. This list now numbers 37 which makes up 93 percent of the state's population. There are 58 counties in the state.
New on that list are Mono County (home to Mammoth Mountain) and Santa Cruz County, a popular tourist destination. North Lake Tahoe is in Placer County which was added to the list earlier this month.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials are reporting 42 new cases of COVID-19 over the last three days, July 25-27. Of the new cases, 16 are in the Lake Tahoe region, 11 are in El Dorado Hills, eight in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, five in Placerville, and one each in the North County and Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz regions.
Of the 42 new cases, three are under the age of 18, 27 aged 18-49, nine aged 50-64 and three aged 65 and older. Twenty-two are female, 20 are male.
420 tests have been administered since Friday.

It is undeniable that the areas hit the hardest economically by the COVID-19 pandemic are those heavily reliant on tourism. South Lake Tahoe is unquestionably one of these areas, suffering not only because of the closure of its tourist economy but suffering higher infection rates due to the very tourism it relies upon. It is for these reasons that so much of the focus of the El Dorado Community Foundation, who serves all of El Dorado County, has been directed toward South Lake Tahoe. We recognized very early on that South Lake Tahoe would be the hardest hit region in the county.
COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials have announced seven new confirmed cases, six in the Lake Tahoe region and one in El Dorado Hills. The totals only increased by five as two previously identified cases were transferred to other counties today. They were previously counted in the Cameron Park/Shingle Sperings area.
Of the new cases, one is under the age of 18, four are aged 18-49 and two aged 50-64. Six are female, one male.
An additional 84 tests were administered.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A new interactive dashboard is now available for COVID-19 tracking in El Dorado County. The new feature is a more comprehensive dashboard that provides additional data points and opportunity for the public to learn how the COVID-19 virus is impacting the area in both Spanish and English.
