South Tahoe Viking Girls win State Soccer Championship

For the fourth time in five years the South Tahoe High School girls soccer team has brought home top honors from the Nevada State Championships.

The Lady Vikings and the Sierra Vista High team were tied 2-2 after the Division 1-A regulation match after South Tahoe's Ashlee Schouten and Maia Bickert each scored goals, one in each half. Freshman Annie Brejc shot in the winning goal in overtime, resulting in a 3-2 victory over the team from Southern Nevada.

On the boys side, Truckee and Chapparal were tied in their match as well. Truckee went on to win the State Championship.

As part of their mission to give back to the community and protect the environment, Vail Resorts gave away 49 grants to Lake Tahoe area groups during a ceremony on Tuesday at Heavenly Valley.

This just may be the year of South Lake Tahoe girls soccer dominance. One week after the Whittell warriors won the state title for Division III schools, the Lady Vikings will try to win one of their own.

On Friday night, the South Tahoe High Varsity Girls beat the #1 seed from the South, Faith Lutheran by a score of 2-1. Junior Ashley Schouten scored both goals for STHS. Their nemesis from the North, Truckee, lost their match Friday against Sierra Vista High 1-0.

Celebrity Golf Tournament gives over $115,000 to local causes and charities

South Lake Tahoe non-profits were awarded $48,000 during the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board meeting today. The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. The LTVA, in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional $67,200 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during tournament week to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Booster Club, Boys and Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship

South Tahoe High's girls soccer team headed to state tourney

One week after the Whittell High girls brought home the state soccer trophy for division III schools, the girls from South Tahoe High are headed to the state tournament for division 1-A. They are entering the tournament as the number two seed from the North after losing to Truckee in the Regional Playoffs.

South Shore high schools do well in NIAA State Cross Country Races

South Tahoe High's Boys cross country team is bringing home a Division 1-A fifth place finish from the 2014 NIAA State Cross Country Championships in Las Vegas. Their counterpart across the state line, Division III Whittell High School, is also bringing home fifth place honors from the tournament.

South Tahoe's highest finisher was Dillon Lemons who finished 18th. He was followed by Orion Maxwell (21st), Paul Mutz (25th), Mario Mangiaracina (33rd), George Freeman (42nd), Paul Hoefer (45th) and Chase Stalter (52nd). Their top five finishers ended up with a total time of 1:31:27.1.

Whittell Girls Soccer Team #1 in State!

The Whittell Warriors Girls soccer team are now Nevada State Champs after they won the NIAA Division III Nevada State High School Tournament Saturdy in Zephyr Cove.

The Whittell girls beat the number two tournament seed, Incline High by a score of 3-1. This was the second time in school history the Whittell girls brought home the trophy.

South Tahoe Girls soccer team wins NIAA Semifinals; Championship match Saturday

The Lady Vikings of South Tahoe High extended their season at least one more day by beating Lowry Friday during the Division 1A Regional Semifinals. Freshman Annie Brejc had two goals on the day with Junior Ashlee Schouten and Senior Maia Bickert each kicking in one.

They are now 19-2-1 on the season and meet their league rival Truckee Wolverines for the Regional Championship. That match will be in Truckee on Saturday, November 8 at 2 p.m.

South Tahoe High's Cross Country teams at Nevada State Championships

The South Tahoe High Cross Country team is in Clark County this weekend for the Nevada High School Cross Country Championships. The boys will compete on Saturday at 1:20 p.m. and the girls run at 10:45 a.m.

South Tahoe's Dillon Lemmons led the Viking runners during the regional championship on Halloween with an 8th place finish. Teammates Orion Maxwell (12th), Paul Mutz (16th), Mario Mangiaracina (17th), George Freeman (26th), Paul Hoefer (35th), David Holmes (39th) and joined Lemmons to give South Tahoe a third place finish with an average time of 18:49.

Whittell High's girls soccer team goes for state title on Saturday

The Lady Warriors of Whittell High School played the first round of the State Soccer Championships just as they had the regular season, with dominance.

With a league leading record of 14-0 (and overall 17-1), the Whittell girls breezed into the final game by beating White Pine 5-0.

In the other playoff game at Whittell on Friday, Incline High beat North Tahoe with a score of 5 to 4.

The Warriors girls team will play Incline at noon on Saturday at Whittell High.

Prep roundup for Whittell and South Tahoe High Schools

The Whittell Warriors Varsity football team improved their record to 8-0 after a double overtime win over Mineral County on Friday night. The Warriors fell behind in the first quarter 22-8 and went into the locker room at half time trailing 44-22. At the end of regulation play the score was tied at 44 after Whittell came back with two touchdown passes by Colin Buchholtz late in the game. Max Primo's 6 yard rushing TD in overtime was followed by a pass by Buccholtz to Armando Rodgriquez for a touchdown put Whittell on the win column with a final score of 56-50.

South Tahoe Lady Vikings win cross town rivalry

The girl's varsity soccer team from South Tahoe High beat the Whittell Warriors on Saturday by a score of 6-0. Senior Ally King led all scorers with three goals, followed by Junior Ashlee Schouten's two and Alejandra Gutierrez, a junior, kicked in one. South Tahoe seniors Kendall Egan and Jordyn Dion each has assists.

Both teams are having big seasons. The Whittell girls are now 9-1 overall with 4-1 in league play and are in first place in Division III North. South Tahoe is now 10-2-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league and are in first place in the Northern Nevada 1A Soccer League.

South Tahoe High student makes 3rd trip around lake for charity

South Tahoe High Junior Mykala Muskovitz is spending Sunday participating in Tour de Tahoe, the annual bike ride around Lake Tahoe. The 16 year old doesn't just ride, which most of us would find as a big enough accomplishment, she raises money while doing so.

For the third year, Mykala is riding to raise money for a local charity.

In 2011 as an 8th grader, she made the 72 mile ride in 6 hours and raised over $2,000 for Boys and Girls Club and for winter hats and gloves for children at Live Violence Free.

High school sports kick off their first weekend in South Lake Tahoe

Are you ready for some football? Friday Night Lights are underway once again as the South Tahoe High Vikings take on the El Dorado Cougars on August 29. The JV game starts at 4:30 p.m. and Varsity starts at 7 p.m.

Viking Coach Kevin Hennessee has five seniors on his team, 24 juniors and two sophomores.

Both the Boy's and Girl's Cross County teams head to Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks for their meets.

On Saturday, the South Tahoe Girls Soccer teams take to the field. The Vikings host Montgomery in an 11 a.m. JV game and 1 p.m. Varsity match up.

Thieves Break Into South Lake Tahoe's Boys & Girls Club

Two years of hard work and fundraising by the teens at the Boys & Girls Club Lake Tahoe went out the window this weekend when an unknown thief (or thieves) broke into the club and stole the fruits of their labor, a brand new XBox system with games and controllers.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Offers Summer Fun for Kids

Over 120 kids have taken advantage of the summer programs at the Boys and Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe. They started the summer off with a bang with a plethora of activities in the first week. They went swimming at the recreation center, enjoyed ice hockey, spent time building paddleboards, went ice skating, had drama club, golf club and bmx club, Jr Staff program, beach trips, trout creek, water day, soccer, sewing, and many more fun activities.

Kudos: Boys and Girls Club Receives Bikes From One Medical Group

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe would like to thank the One Medical Group for donating 15 bikes to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. We were lucky enough to receive 8 girls’ bikes and 7 boys’ single speed Huggy bikes with matching helmets.

We plan to utilize these during our summer program to teach the members bike safety and how to properly ride a bike as well as integrating them into our programs.

Boys and Girls Club Teens to Build Paddle Boards

Thanks to Tahoe Maritime Museum and a generous grant from the Lana Vento Charitable Trust, there is an exciting opportunity at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe this summer. During the first weeks of summer a selected group of teen members will work together with Tahoe Maritime Museum volunteers to build Kaholo Stand Up Paddleboards from Chesapeake Light Craft.

South Tahoe Pop Warner Cheer & Football Sign Ups

Though it's still baseball season, plans have been forming for the 2014 fall season of Pop Warner Football & Cheer.

Sign ups start Tuesday, May 27. Players have three opportunities to sign up, tonight, June 17 and June 19.

The program if open to boys and girls ages 5-14 (must be 5 as of 08/01/14 to age 14 as of 08/01/14).

Live Violence Free to Raise Community-Wide Awareness

April is a big month for Live Violence Free. It is national Child Abuse Prevention, as well as, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.

South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library Supports Reading at the Juvenile Treatment Center

Lynne Brosch and Rich Fischer, Friends from the South Lake Tahoe Public Library, have been doing book groups on Monday nights with the teens who are incarcerated in the Juvenile Treatment Center in South Lake Tahoe.

Sierra at Tahoe's Olympic Golden Celebration Video

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort hosted a "Golden Celebration" on March 15, 2014 to welcome home Winter Olympians, Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, and Hannah Teter. The day started with a procession through South Lake Tahoe where people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the gold medalists. The celebration at Sierra Resort consisted of a grand ceremony, proclamations from dignitaries, including California Senator Gaines, and live music. The girls also signed autographs and danced the night away. Thanks to the entire community for coming out to celebrate. Way to go Team Sierra!

South Lake Tahoe Sisters Named to Junior World Ski Championships Team

Local girls, Michael and Whitney Gardner, have been named to the 2014 U.S. Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships team.

They will join 20 other Americans competing in Valmalenco, Italy starting on March 30.

Both girls have attended Whittell High School, Michael is currently a student and Whitney is a graduate. They ski for the Heavenly Valley Ski and Snowboard Foundation.

Two Way Gratitude Street Between Olympians and the South Shore Community

Back on home turf, Maddie Bowman, Jamie Anderson and Hannah Teter from South Lake Tahoe spent Saturday doing everything from autographing hundreds of posters to standing in front of thousands of cheering fans.

The "Golden Girls" are all glad to be home after the whirlwind they've been on since the 2014 Olympic Games. The celebration and parade held in South Lake Tahoe, Meyers and Sierra at Tahoe was the first time the three Olympians had been together since Sochi.

The Whittell High School girls took first place in Giant Slalom and Duals in the Tahoe Basin Ski League Finals held in Squaw Valley this week while the South Tahoe High girls ski team took first in Slalom, second in Giant Slalom and Duals. The South Tahoe Girls took first overall.

South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman Prepares for Her Olympic Debut

South Lake Tahoe native Maddie Bowman is preparing for her debut at the 2014 Winter Olympics on Thursday, February 20. Maddie will be part of the inaugural Olympic Freeskiing Halfpipe event. Qualification rounds are Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Sochi time (6:30 a.m. Tahoe time) with the finals at 9:30 p.m. Sochi time (9:30 a.m. Tahoe time).

South Tahoe High Skiers Take First at High School Ski Races at Heavenly Valley

Skiers from Whittell, South Tahoe, North Tahoe, Incline, Truckee, Carson and Douglas High Schools met on the slopes at Heavenly Valley on Tuesday for the High School Slalom Races.

South Tahoe High's Connor McKeen came in 1st in the boys' races with a total combined time of 1:01.79. Grant Dunkelman of Douglas came in 2nd at 1:02.98 followed by Harrison Goss of North Tahoe 1:03.55.

Maia Bickert from South Tahoe High came in 1st in the girls' races with a time of 1:02.96, followed by Cheyenne Brown of Truckee with a time of 1:04.86 and Laurel Taylor of Incline at 1:07.66.

South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition Seeks Help to Make Lasting Impact in Community

Melody Easton is here to make a difference. Recently tapped as the coordinator for the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, the action oriented Easton has hit the ground running.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services was awarded a Federal Drug Free Communities grant, bringing in $125,000 for each of the next five years to help combat drug and alcohol abuse among the youth of South Lake Tahoe. Once the grant was awarded a coordinator needed to be hired. Easton was hired and the Concordia College graduate and her husband packed up and moved from Portland, Oregon.

South Tahoe High Hoops Report

In front of family and friends, the South Tahoe High seniors took to the court for their final regular season home game on Saturday against Fernley High. It what is referred to as the "Senior Game," a special ceremony honored the senior class members of the boys and girls basketball teams, cheerleaders and dance team members.

It was a close game for all 4 quarters of the boys' varsity game, with Fernley holding onto a 65-58 win over South Tahoe.

The Varsity Girls' team, led by 13 points scored by Kayla Griffis, beat Fernley by a score of 55-37.

Lake Tahoe Skiers Nominated for U.S. Olympic Alpine Team

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Sunday nominated 20 athletes to the U.S. Olympic Alpine Ski Team that will compete in Sochi next month. The team is highlighted by Olympic gold medalists Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO).
