Former Horizon Casino in Lake Tahoe to become a Hard Rock Casino & Hotel
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/17/2014 - 12:10pmSouth Lake Tahoe's Horizon Resort Casino is going to be a Hard Rock Casino & Hotel by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015.
This comes amid local speculation and rumors that have been circling the community since the Horizon's closure this spring.
The new casino has a facebook page and website already.
Hard Rock Lake Tahoe is undergoing $60M in renovations and redesign that will highlight rock and roll and will also serve as a live music venue.

A big thank you to Zephyr Cove Resort for hosting the Music on the Beach BAHM! this past Tuesday evening. As always, we had a great time at the resort. Offering picturesque lakefront entertainment, food and lodging, Zephyr Cove has something for everyone. We’d like to also thank local band Ike and Martin for providing the exceptional entertainment. The inaugural Color Blast run with Tahoe Youth & Family Services in South Lake Tahoe last year lived up to it's name if you ask participants as "it was a blast!"
The agency is holding their first Genoa Color Blast fun run on Saturday, July 26th, 2014. This fundraiser will directly benefit TYFS programs and services for youth and families in the South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County communities.

Les Schwab Tire Center of South Lake Tahoe is hosting their 4th Annual Locals Car Show on Sunday, July 6 at the "Y" area tire store.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. locals can show off their car, trucks, 4x4s and motorcycles for a $40 fee which included a bag of goodies. Everyone is welcome to attend and view the cars, have hot dogs, get cars washed, watch "the tire burn", listen to live music and enjoy the community event. There are also raffles and prizes.
All proceeds go to support Project 44, the foster family awareness program in South Lake Tahoe.

Thousands of visitors have come to town to enjoy fireworks, BBQs and family fun. There are many ways to celebrate Friday:
Head out to watch the 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. Cars, trucks and other vehicles will set out from Les Schwab Tires at the Y and head down Highway 50 to the American Legion where there will be a BBQ. Sit along the street (the best views are on the same side of the street as the parade will be moving).

Race the Lake of the Sky Stand Up Paddle Event in South Lake Tahoe For All Ages

Started in 2012 by South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle, Race the Lake of the Sky is a premiere flat-water SUP race and was dubbed the top pick for the best stand up paddle event of the year in 2013 by pro SUP athlete Anthony Vela. The event offers a stunning location as the backdrop in drawing hundreds of participants, novice and elite alike. Various races include short course. They wrap it all up with a 14 mile race to Emerald Bay and Back on Sunday.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."
The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Wild Tahoe Weekend at Taylor Creek

The activities included information booths and hourly guided bird walks along the nature trail through the wetland; Master Falconer, Marie Gaspari Crawford, brought two falcons and a Red tailed hawk to the event. During her two presentations, Crawford spoke about birds of prey and gave some interesting insight to caring for and living with them. She also answered questions and had the birds pose for pictures.

The event starts off on Saturday with a Bike Trail Clean Up Day. Anyone can join them at three locations after signing up,and lunch is even included. Meet at Sierra Nevada Alliance at 2311 Lake Tahoe Blvd, Los Angeles and Hwy 50 by the fire station or behind Clean Tahoe, 2074 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Lunch will be served after the clean up day at the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

Genoa Cowboy Festival and Sippin' Sunday This Weekend

Earth Day was started in 1970 after peace activist John McConnell spoke at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, calling for a day to honor the earth and call for peace. It is now celebrated in 192 countries.
The South Tahoe Earth Day celebration recognizes and promotes our region’s unique beauty while educating the public about local environmental issues.

Barton Skilled Nursing volunteers wear many hats. They play inspiring music, bring communion, and call bingo. Volunteers turn an ordinary birthday party into a trip down memory lane with music from the past. Musicians share ukulele, piano, and organ music with our residents. They honor our vets. Some volunteers bring in their pets to lick faces and shower our residents with love. Other groups bring church to Skilled Nursing residents every Sunday.

June 17, 2014 - 6:00pm The Friends of the Library presents an evening with Linda Chorney, Grammy Nominee and author on June 17 at the South Lake Tahoe Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Chorney made history as the first Independent artist without a label, publicist, or manager, to be nominated for a Grammy in a category of legends, like Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, and Willie Nelson. The gatekeepers of the industry were not happy, and did what they could to undermine her nomination and career. But they didn't know who they were dealing with. Chorney fights back with a delicious sense of humor.

Sierra at Tahoe's Olympic Golden Celebration Video
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/25/2014 - 10:20amSierra-at-Tahoe Resort hosted a "Golden Celebration" on March 15, 2014 to welcome home Winter Olympians, Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, and Hannah Teter. The day started with a procession through South Lake Tahoe where people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the gold medalists. The celebration at Sierra Resort consisted of a grand ceremony, proclamations from dignitaries, including California Senator Gaines, and live music. The girls also signed autographs and danced the night away. Thanks to the entire community for coming out to celebrate. Way to go Team Sierra!
Up and Coming ZZ Ward Making First Visit to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/20/2014 - 9:21pmIf you could take Muddy Waters, the Beatles, Tina Turner. David Bowie and Tom Petty, throw in a little Jay Z and mix them all up, you'd come up with a blond 27 year old named ZZ Ward.
After listening to her debut CD, "Til the Casket Drops", I am a new fan. And apparently I am not alone. "The tour has been incredible," Ward told me in a phone interview. "At every venue I'm seeing new fans and it's been a very positive thing to see."
3rd Annual Lake Tahoe Home & Garden Show

The Annual Home & Garden Show in South Lake Tahoe will be held April 25 to 26, 2014 at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex.
The long list of vendors participating include the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, I Can Fix THat, Just Fabulous Repurposed Furniture and Consignment, Second Chances, Everything Tahoe, Legal Shield, H20 at Home and many more. There will also be an author's corner this year, along with raffles, classes, demonstrations and live music.
Friday - 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Saturday - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
