1000s walk, ride and skate on new I-580 in Carson City
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/22/2017 - 5:42pmThousands of people turned out Saturday morning to celebrate the near-completion of the much-anticipated Carson City Interstate 580 freeway bypass riding their bicycles, walking, jogging or skating on top of the pavement that will soon carry tens of thousands of vehicles upon it when open next month.
The I-580 run, walk and ride event began about 9 a.m. Saturday and continued until noon.

Yet many people in our community may not fully appreciate what Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) brings to our community. On June 30, LTCC held its graduation ceremony with over 150 students getting a degree or certificate. Many will go on to a 4-year university to get a bachelor’s degree. We now know where last year’s 163 students who graduated from LTCC went.

After watching the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on opening weekend, we highly recommend this fun musical though not appropriate for those under 13). It is a Tony Award-winning musical comedy and even though far from Broadway, the local Lake Tahoe cast made it very entertaining.
Firefighters contain 4th of July fire on Highway 50 at Spooner
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/04/2017 - 12:22pmCarson City Fire Department, East Fork Fire and Tahoe Douglas Fire responded to a brush fire on the valley side of Highway 50 on Spooner.
The fire was reported at around 12:20 p.m. and said to be around 1-2 miles up Highway 50 on the north side. Smoke and flames are visible at the time.
By 1:07 p.m., firefighters at the wildfire reported the blaze was contained with responding units on scene building a hose line around the fire and mopping up. The cause is under investigation.
Highway 50 at the area of the fire has been closed but is reported open at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre festival schedule this summer is a full one and they've added a new event this summer, Evening Music on the Lawn.
The grand lawn at Valhalla has been a popular spot for Sunday afternoon concerts and now there will be two evening lawn concerts in 2017. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic supper and enjoy some music, there will be a beer and wine garden too.

Good news is that even with highs in the 80s, they'll still be well below Sacramento who will continue to see triple digit temperatures all week.
Below are the record temperatures for this week along with the forecast high:
Monday - 85 in 1988. Forecast is 86.
Tuesday - 85 in 1981. Forecast is 88.
Wednesday - 85 in 1988. Forecast is 88.
Thursday - 85 in 1988. Forecast high is 87.
Friday - 87 in 1961. Forecast high is 83.
Two women survive after vehicle plunges into Carson River
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/26/2017 - 6:12pmTwo women escaped what could have been a tragic accident after their vehicle plunged into the fast-moving Carson River early Friday morning.
Deputies were called into the Carson River Canyon near Deer Run Road in the early morning hours, for a report of a vehicle that went into the river. Dispatch advised both occupants of the vehicle managed to escape and were safe. Dispatch received the initial call at 2:42 a.m.
One woman, who is pregnant, was taken to the hospital for an injury to her foot, according to family friend Crystal Pacheco. The other woman suffered minor scratches.
STHS photographers tops in state-wide contests

Guadalupe Ruiz and Tristan Klasko received recognition for their first-place award winning photographs submitted to the California Streaming Photo Contest sponsored by the California County Offices of Education. They each won a camera, tripod and other gifts. Their award winning photos will be used on a calendar distributed to teachers across the state.
National Trails Day celebrated with festival at Spooner Lake

Changing climate impacted Lake Tahoe's clarity again in 2016
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/19/2017 - 8:19amClarity levels at Lake Tahoe in 2016 increased in winter and decreased in summer in 2016 according to a report released on May 17 by researchers from University of California, Davis.
They said the summer values were due to the continuing effects of climate change and were so large that they outweighed the improving winter clarity which were at their highest since 2012.
SR28 reopens after boulder removed from roadway
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/08/2017 - 4:26pm5:41 p.m. update: Nevada Highway Patrol says that NDOT was able to clear the boulder out faster than expected and SR28 is now open.

State Route 28 near Chimney Beach was closed in both directions due to a boulder blocking the roadway.
According to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) the estimated time of reopening is 8:00 p.m.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society regrouping after director fired

Tahoe Roads launches new brand and improved website

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has now included information on roads around the lake, including information from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
The goals of the website are to:
- Educate the public on the benefits of the construction happening around the lake
- Keep the public and partners updated on project details and roadwork schedules
Sugar Pine Foundation gets musician Jack Johnson's help this summer

Chase that started on Spooner Summit ends in downtown Carson City crash
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/26/2017 - 7:14am12:30 p.m. update - The driver was identified as Jesus Herrarea-Casas from South Lake Tahoe. He was placed under arrest and taken to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office for booking on charges of Eluding Police, Reckless driving, Disregard Traffic control device(s), Speeding, and driving without a valid license. He may also be charged with DUI, pending the test results according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Herrarea-Casas made it all the way to downtown Carson City before a Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant decided that the pursuit had to end due to the danger it created for the public.
NDOT: SR28 striping rescheduled; Lane shift at bottom of Spooner
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/24/2017 - 9:19pmDrivers heading off the hill and going into Carson City via U.S. 50 need to be aware of lane shifts on the highway near South Carson Street. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be reducing traffic down to one lane in each direction, and shifting it slightly to the south, starting the evening of Tuesday, April 25 and into early May.

Kristel Kimball of Harrah's Tahoe and Nick Breaux, the regional VP of Marketing for Harrah's Entertainment, broke the news with Howie Nave during Howie's Morning Rush radio show on KRLT-FM.
The English band, formed in 1964, is considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide and holding a reputation for their live shows and studio work.
Body of missing Sacramento woman found in Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe

Divers found her before noon but did not have positive identification until about 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Ex-husband of woman missing in SLT says he doesn't expect to see her again

He was the last person who reported seeing her before her disappearance.
"I am trying to do what I can for what she would have wanted me to do under the circumstances," Henry Suwinsky said.
