SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council will receive a presentation about broadband and wireless communications infrastructure in South Lake Tahoe during their meeting on Tuesday, April 2. The presentation will be from representatives with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and a communications expert.

The meeting, which starts at 9:00 a.m. in Council Chambers at the airport, will have the following items up for discussion and vote:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dozens of school teachers in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) filled the board room in South Lake Tahoe last Tuesday to show trustees they want a cost of living increase to their pay.

Jodi Dayberry, President of the South Tahoe Educators Association, led the teachers in their presentation to the LTUSD Board of Trustees, telling the five elected members teachers are struggling due to the high cost of living and many have second jobs and summer jobs to fill their financial void.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Giving people a positive experience as they travel along the west shore of Lake Tahoe will require removing congestion from the roadway is one of the goals of the State Route 89 Recreation Corridor Management Plan.

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations have been working on the plan which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline.

This week at South Tahoe High School, students put on their coats and boots to bear the snow, which continued to fall throughout the week. With temperatures on campus as low as 15F in the morning, it seldom got warmer than 30F. Also this week, the local 4-H club is looking for leadership coaches, and Kody Griffis just signed up to play college football in South Dakota.

Dr. Cathy Cox will discuss the history leading up to the Apollo 11 flight, and she will share information about the astronauts who first walked on the moon, along with the spacecraft and logistics of this historic flight. In addition, she'll discuss where NASA and other space agencies have gone since. This is sure to be an out-of-this world presentation. Free and open to all.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In an effort to bring more of the public to their meetings, the South Lake Tahoe City Council is holding their second meeting of each month in the evening.

Tuesday, February 19 will be the first night meeting for the new Council and the agenda appears to be fairly short. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. and the Council voted to not allow the night meetings to go past 10:00 p.m.

South Tahoe High School students and staff are invited to a presentation on avalanches on February 27 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in the school's Angora and Cascade rooms in the student union.

Popular avalanche educator Richard Bothwell will be the presenter for the event which is sponsored by the Nickolay Dodov Foundation Avalanche Education and Backcountry Safety program. This is the fourth year the foundation has made the presentation to South Tahoe High students.

The journey started as South Lake Tahoe resident Ari Ramos touched the Atlantic Ocean and left Jacksonville, Florida on January 28, 2016, , and if all goes well it will end this February when she touches the Pacific Ocean at the Santa Monica Pier.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As part of Operation Sierra Storm, the National Television Meteorologists' Conference held annually in Lake Tahoe, the public is invited to attend a lecture and panel discussion on living with climate change and wildland fires.

On Wednesday, January 30, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Living the New Reality: What You Should Know About Climate Change & Wildland Fires will be held at Harveys in the Cabaret Theater. It is free to the public and offers free validated parking in Harveys parking garage.

Join the Friends of the Library as we host a very informative Bird Talk. Sarah Hockensmith of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will share with us all the birds that were discovered during the 2018 Tahoe Big Year. This year-long birding event celebrated the hundreds of bird species that occupy the Tahoe Region, and brought together birding beginners and enthusiasts alike. This presentation will show you what was found including common and unique birds of Lake Tahoe. Come learn how exciting (and addicting) birding can be. Free and open to all.

There is a public meeting about the San Bernardino Class 1 Bike Path Project on Wednesday, December 5 at the Tahoe Paradise Park Club House at 1011 E. San Bernardino Avenue at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting will still be held even with the recent snowfall.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - There is hope when we find ourselves in the midst of an endless argument or discussion about climate change. On Thursday, November 29, join Professor Lynda Walsh at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in an interactive presentation on how to debate this sometimes contentious subject.

Understanding the structure of arguments about climate change patterns helps us engage those who disagree with us more productively.

STATELINE, Nev. - A standing room only crowd was in the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board room on October 25, 2018 for an updated presentation, and plans for the next steps, of the U.S. 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, commonly known as the Loop Road. It reroutes Highway 50 from its current location in front of Heavenly Village and the casinos to behind Raley's, the Village Center and Harrahs Tahoe.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Years of collaboration with a variety of partners have brought to completion two major initiatives for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). During their governing board meeting on October 24 a new Shoreline Plan was unanimously approved as was a comprehensive package of changes to the agency’s development rights system.

Join both the Friends of the Library and AAUW-South Lake Tahoe for a presentation by Amanda Horn of the Nevada Museum of Art on "Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Art". This major retrospective exhibition, at the Museum through January 27, 2019, rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman (1869-1950) who is best known for her iconic landscape photographs made in the early 1900s depicting herself and other female nudes outdoors in the Sierra Nevada. Please note this meeting will take place in the Aspen Room of LTCC as the Library is closed for the Veterans Day weekend.

Learn from experts how “Smoke, Heat, Mosquitoes and Ticks” are affecting Northern Nevadans’ health during a free presentation Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

A panel of experts representing the Desert Research Institute's Western Regional Climate Center and the University of Nevada, Reno will share their expertise on fire, extreme heat and biting insects from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Marlette Hall in the Cedar Building on campus.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If all goes as planned, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Station 2 will once again be a fire station by the end of 2019.

Since December 2015, the station has housed the Cal Tahoe JPA ambulances and staff. This move decreased response times by the paramedics and EMTs, but increased response time by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) whose other two stations are at the "Y" and Ski Run Blvd.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was found in drinking water wells in South Lake Tahoe near the "Y" in 1989, and it remains in the groundwater today, forming a containment plume from the intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89 and heading toward Lake Tahoe through the Tahoe Keys.

The Daughters of the American Revolution chapter that is organizing in the South Lake Tahoe area will hold its first official meeting, Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at 6:30 PM. State Organizing Secretary Wendy Malone will be giving her presentation: "Making a Difference in the DAR." Any woman age 18 and over who can document her connection to the American Revolution is eligible to join the DAR. Assistance with that proof and with the application process is provided at no charge.
