Suspect identified in South Lake Tahoe murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 71-year-old local man has been arrested for the murder of his 65-year-old female roommate.

James Byron Cleveland was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) after they responded to a Carson Avenue residence on a call of an injured woman on Sunday, January 13, 2019.

Law enforcement continues search for murder suspect(s) in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The investigation into the murder of two Gardnerville, Nevada women continues and Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley urges the community to remain vigilant and to pay attention in their neighborhoods.

During the evening of January 9-10, 56-year-old Connie Koontz was murdered in her home on James Road and sometime in the overnight hours of January 12-13, 74-year-old Sophia Renken was also murdered in her home.

Major winter storm possible this week in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Significant impacts from a potentially major winter storm are forecast for the Sierra and lower valleys next week, beginning late Monday night and going until Thursday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said confidence is building that the storm could bring several feet of snow above 8000 feet, and up to two feet down to 6000 feet.

SnowGlobe gives back to the South Lake Tahoe community

Lake Tahoe residents on Western Nevada College Dean's List

Western Nevada College has released the names of their Fall 2018 Dean's List, one of its largest dean’s lists in years. On the list are 373 students, accounting for 31.1 percent of the college’s full-time students.

Also on the list are residents of South Lake Tahoe, Marla Bay, Zephyr Cove and Stateline. To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe - Up to one foot of snow above 7,000 ft level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quiet weather will prevail most of today before the next storm impacts the Sierra tonight into Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe from 1:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.

There will be mountain snow and very light rain for far western Nevada valleys.

Some roads closed around Lake Tahoe due to snow and wind

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Interstate 80 is closed at this hour due to white out conditions and zero visibility from Colfax to the Nevada state line. SR-89 around Emerald Bay is also closed. No estimated time of reopening was provided.

Ceremony, street closures part of Monday inauguration at State Capitol in Carson City

Nevada's 30th governor will take office on Monday, Jan. 7 at an inauguration ceremony held in front of the State Capitol in Carson City.

Stephen F. Sisolak, Nevada's first Democratic governor in two decades, was elected on Nov. 6, 2018. He will take the oath of office on the front steps of the Capitol Monday at 11:30 a.m., according to his inauguration web site.

Capitol grounds will open prior to the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and a public reception will follow at the Nevada State Library and Archives located on the northeast corner of the Capitol complex.

Ribbon cutting welcomes Chase Bank to the South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The third area branch of Chase Bank has opened in South Lake Tahoe and they were officially welcomed to the community during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday.

"Congratulations, thank you to Chase for being a part of the community," said Jason Drew of the Tahoe Chamber. "It is incredible to see you opening and being part of the revitalization."

Drew was joined by Chamber CEO Steve Teshara and a couple dozen of their members and other locals.

Winter Storm Warning in place through Monday in Lake Tahoe

Sierra snowpack at 80% of average

PHILLIPS, Calif. - It was a much different picture of the Sierra snowpack today than what there was a year ago when the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted their first monthly measurement of the snow and water content at Phillips Station, ten miles west of Lake Tahoe.

As of January 3, 2019, DWR measured the snow at 25.5 inches deep, which means the Sierra snowpack is 80 percent of normal with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of nine inches. These figures are 36 percent of the April 1 average, the date used as the maximum snowpack that will be received in the mountains.

Change in weather pattern forecast for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been cold but quiet weather wise in the Sierra for the last several days but that may come to a change by Saturday. An active weather pattern is possible and may cause travel impacts in the Sierra, northeast California, and portions of western Nevada this weekend.

Forecasters are still uncertain about the impact of storms headed to Lake Tahoe and will be able to better determine snowfall amounts as they get closer.

Forecast of sunny and cold for the week ahead in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As we say goodbye to 2018 and hello to 2019 there will be one constant in Lake Tahoe - sunny days and temperatures well below freezing as the sun goes down.

A cold front will move through the area overnight Sunday night into Monday morning, though it is a dry one. A brisk north to northeast wind will also make it feel considerably colder. As for when the new year begins at midnight, expect it to
be quite chilly.

Nevada Gaming Control Board: South Shore casino revenue up over 10%

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of November 2018 showed an increase over the previous year, posting a gain of 6.40 percent with a "win" of $967,168,553 for casinos in the state (up $5.8M) according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

On the South Shore, the $17,136,801 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was up by 10.49 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $8,974,211 in September, up 3.48 percent.

Heavy traffic on I80 with chain controls; US50 to South Lake Tahoe much easier drive

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - `With holiday travelers and a Winter Weather Advisory both headed to Lake Tahoe, expect delays on the roads.

On I80 near Donner Lake westbound traffic is at a dead stop as drivers head towards chain controls and snow. As of 11:00 a.m. Monday the controls are in place from Kingvale to the Donner Lake interchange with those expected to expand as the storm enters the region.

Wind advisory in place for much of Friday in South Lake Tahoe

It's time to secure those Christmas decorations, especially those of the inflatable variety, as it will be a windy one around Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada on Friday, December 14.

A wind advisory is in place from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Winds will be widespread from the south 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Gusts to 65 mph in wind prone areas and Sierra ridges will likely see gusts over 100 mph.

South Lake Tahoe police jump in to assist two dogs who jumped from 5th floor of parking garage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a normal day of skiing in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, December 7, 2018 for a couple from Oakland, California. They had parked their car on the top floor of the five-story parking garage at Heavenly Village, left their two dogs Titan and Comet inside and hit the slopes for three hours.

Fundraising site opens after former Mayor Judy Brown passes away

Judy Brown, a longtime South Lake Tahoe resident, former mayor, Planning Commission chair, local business owner, wife, mother, grandmother and friend died on December 8, 2018 at Renown Hospital in Reno. She was 72 years old.

More details for family, friends and colleagues will be coming from the family but in the meantime they have opened a fundraising campaign to assist Judy's husband Alan Brown with immediate bills left after Judy's medical issues this year.

SR28 south of Incline Village to close overnight Dec. 11-13

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There will be full road closures on State Route 28 south of Incline Village for two nights this week so the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) can install bridges on the new shared used path.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village near Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor State Park from 8:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. nightly Dec. 11 to Dec. 13. The road closures are scheduled for overnight hours to reduce impact on heavy daytime traffic. The closures are weather dependent and subject to change.

Fairly mild South Lake Tahoe forecast with some chances for rain and snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been a few break in the clouds today, but full clearing is unlikely for many lower valleys. These stubborn clouds should
gradually decrease in coverage over the weekend with drier and warmer conditions this weekend according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Mountains will remain mild and in the sunshine. A weak system brings the potential for some light
rain and snow early next week. Although there are no signals for strong storms, the pattern looks to remain active through at least mid-month.

Storm leaves behind challenging road conditions and cold temps

The latest storm to hit the Lake Tahoe area has left behind a few inches of snow around the lake but will leaving the area overnight.

Road controls remain up this morning, no matter where you are in the Reno/Tahoe area. The storm hit the Reno-Sparks, Carson City and Carson Valley areas much more than expected Tuesday night, prompting school delays and roads remain challenging there today. A Winter Storm Warning remains in place until 10:00 a.m.

Chance of snow for much of week ahead in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fast-moving and cold system is dropping snow in the Lake Tahoe Basin with total snow accumulations 5 to 10 inches in this storm, 8 to 14 inches along and west of Highway 89. This snow will be powderier.

The Winter Storm Warning expires on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Tonight through Monday, cold and dry conditions settle over the region with highs remaining well below average. Overnight lows will be quite chilly, especially in areas that have a few inches of snow on the ground along with clear skies.

Man who died after leaving SnowGlobe to be honored during Rose Parade

Hunter Weiss was 20-years-old when he attended the annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe and was heading home to Reno on New Year's Day 2018. He and a friend pulled their vehicle over to sleep and left a propane heater on in the front of the truck to stay warm. Hunter died of carbon monoxide poisoning but his friend survived due to an open window on his side of the vehicle.

Weiss had been an organ donor and his corneas gave the gift of sight to two people, one whom had never seen before.

Latest storm exiting Lake Tahoe, next one due Friday night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Winter weather has arrived in Lake Tahoe! The second of three storm fronts is finishing up Thursday night with the storm warning expiring at 4:00 a.m. Friday. But Mother Nature isn't done yet.

Another Winter Storm Warning goes up for the Lake Tahoe Basin at 1:00 p.m. Friday and will be in effect until 3:00 p.m. Saturday. A break in the weather precipitation will occur Friday morning which will make this the best window of opportunity to travel in the Sierra.

Stronger storm forecast to hit Lake Tahoe Wednesday night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm warning is in effect starting at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 and lasting until 4:00 a.m. Friday, Nov.30. Heavy snow is expected, prompting officials to upgrade the storm from a "watch" to a "warning."

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches below 7000 feet are expected with 3-6 inches at lake level and 1-3 feet above 7000 feet with higher amounts along the Sierra crest according to the National Weather Service. It will be windy as well with gusts as high as 60 mph over higher terrain.

New pop-up store at Stateline confusing supporters of South Lake Tahoe Cancer League candy sale

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual South Lake Tahoe Cancer League See's Candy fundraiser is in full swing, but for those wishing to support the nonprofit's work in the community they'll need to watch where they purchase the candy.

A new corporate pop-up store appeared near Stateline and is not associated with the Cancer League.

Winter Storm Watch in place; Rain and snow to impact travel

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two storms will be hitting the Lake Tahoe Basin this week with the first expected Tuesday afternoon. The second one has prompted a Winter Storm Watch that is in effect from Wednesday evening through late Thursday night.

Heavy snow is possible with total snow accumulations in the second storm 6" to 12" under 7000 feet with 1' to 3' possible above 7000 feet. Snow level will stay above the lake Wednesday, dropping to 3500-4000 feet Friday morning.

Winds could gust as high as 65 mph over the higher terrain of the Sierra, 25-30 mph at lower elevations.

Two new storms headed to Lake Tahoe next week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After the Thanksgiving rain and snow, the Lake Tahoe region is drying out through Monday, but new storms are expected on Tuesday and Thursday. The break in the weather has some lighter winds and mild temperatures, time to finish up those pre-winter chores.

Next week is looking to be an active weather week with multiple rounds of rain and snow in the Sierra and Western Nevada. The storms will be progressively colder with lowering snow levels, possibly to the valley floor by next weekend according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Karl James Hildinger ~ 5/30/31 - 11/11/18

Karl James Hildinger was born in Danville, California on May 30, 1931. Jim passed away at home, surrounded by family, in South Lake Tahoe on November 11, 2018.

Three weeks after he was born, he was carried into Angora Lakes Resort in a Washoe papoose basket. He was a staunch environmentalist and spent his lifetime protecting and preserving Angora and the greater Lake Tahoe Basin. The Angora Lakes Resort remains in the family.

Sierra House Elementary fire caused by power cord overload

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire at Sierra House Elementary School on November 11, 2018 was caused by an electrical overload due to “daisy chain wiring” of two power cords in a classroom.

When firefighters from Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) arrived at the school at 9:35 p.m. they found smoke once the front doors were opened and flames observed as they turned the corner near the "upper pod" wing.
