Winter Driving Tips

A blast of winter is headed to Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada and the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) is reminding motorists that one of the most important factors to consider when driving in inclement weather is SPEED.

Over the past several weeks the NHP has responded to countless crashes on Nevada Highways as a result of driving in less than idea driving conditions. Many of those crashes involved multiple vehicles and all were preventable.

A common violation during inclement weather is “Speed Too Fast For Conditions”.

Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe: 3-5" snow possible at lake level

It most likely won't be a white Christmas in Lake Tahoe, but snow is headed to the Sierras this Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. It is a quick moving storm but has a chance to leave behind the much-needed snow. Christmas Day is expected to be sunny and cold, with a high of 39, low around 12.

Plan on slippery road conditions during the morning commute Wednesday from Lake Tahoe to Reno and the Carson Valley. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are forecast for lake level, with up to 10 inches expected above 7000 feet.

Wind advisory and 20% chance of snow in Lake Tahoe Saturday

A quick moving, weak weather system will affect the area Friday night through Saturday morning bringing very light snowfall across the region. The inversions we've seen in the Reno-Tahoe area are likely to strengthen again early next week before a cold front moves through in the middle of next week and breaks them down.

A weak ridge will be in place early next week which will again provide dry conditions, light winds, and the valley inversions. However, models do continue to show a potential for a more potent slider type system on Wednesday.

South Lake Tahoe Police urge safe driving this holiday

Winter is upon us as we begin to see light snowfall and cold, icy conditions. Every year families travel to South Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving and Christmas, leading to congested roadways and an increase in pedestrian traffic. Many of these travelers are foreign to winter weather and do not have much experience driving in icy conditions. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reminds motorists to be alert and courteous so that everyone can arrive at their destination and enjoy the holiday season with their friends and loved ones.

Opinion: Rebuttal to SassTalk

The following is a letter received concerning the Sass Talk published on October 7:

I hate to waste my time, but I cannot let the erroneous propaganda put out by the Emperor of City Hall go unrebutted. The City will not let go of this “nuisance” problem as it diverts focus on the dismal road conditions that the City has neglected for years. Also, City management has totally failed to provide a reliable snow removal system as we experienced last winter.

Bridge painting work to affect Donner Lake interchange until August

Roads, mental health and seniors focus of next El Dorado County BOS meeting

Event Date:
December 20, 2016 (All day)

There will be three presentations at the next El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting on June 20 that pertain to fiscal year 2017-18 budget. They are required to approve it by June 30 each year.

"Every year, the County’s Chief Administrator provides a Recommended Budget to the Board of Supervisors for their consideration," said Chief Administrative Officer, Don Ashton. "It is but one step along the path to having an Adopted Budget approved by the Board in September.”

Presentations are scheduled as follows:

9:00 a.m. – Senior Legal Services
10:00 a.m. – Road Work Plan

Ebbetts Pass in Alpine County may remain closed into July

A tough winter on Sierra Nevada roads is still taking its toll. State Route 4 over Ebbetts Pass remains closed for road repairs near Wolf Creek, and it is expected to remain closed into July.

The road is closed from the east end of Lake Alpine to 7.2 miles west of the junction with State Route 89.

Caltrans has been able to clear snow and make repairs on State Route 108 over Sonora Pass. It opened Tuesday afternoon.

For up to the minute road conditions, visit http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.

Navigating South Lake Tahoe during road construction

As construction continues on Highway 50 from Winnemucca Avenue to the Y in South Lake Tahoe, drivers need to be aware of some recommended alternative routes since left-hand turns from the road are not available.

A lack of left-hand turns has drivers confused as to where to go. Some people are still making left-hand turns where prohibited, thus jamming up traffic and making navigation dangerous.

Expect extra traffic on roads to and around Lake Tahoe this weekend

1.6 million Americans will hit the roads this weekend according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), and because of this, Caltrans is alerting motorists to anticipate delays on area roadways as motorists make their way to their Memorial Day weekend destinations.

New app to help Nevada drivers with real-time traffic info

More real-time traffic information will be available to Nevada drivers as the Nevada Department of Transportation announces a data-sharing partnership with Waze, the free, real-time crowdsourced traffic and navigation app.

9:15 a.m. update: Caltrans has reopened SR89.

* * *
State Route 89 around Emerald Bay was closed Tuesday, and remains closed tonight due to unstable snow conditions after slides covered the roadway.

The first slide happened early Tuesday afternoon, then after the road was cleared and reopened two more slides covered both lanes at about 4:30 p.m., causing Caltrans to close the road again.

Crews are working to clear the road and will reevaluate the conditions Wednesday. More rain and snow is expected through Thursday.
