Interim Director named for Tahoe Youth & Family Services

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Youth and Family Services announced today that Christopher Croft has officially resigned his position as Executive Director effective November 15, 2017. He has served the communities of South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County and Alpine County in this position since June 10, 2014.

Victims of 2011 mass shooting in Carson City honored with memorial run

Around two dozen runners and walkers remembered the victims of a mass shooting in Carson City that happened six years ago Wednesday in which five people died, including three Nevada National Guardsmen.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, were killed in a shooting at the south Carson City International House of Pancakes. Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, was also killed and her husband injured. The shooter, a man suffering from mental illness, turned the gun on himself.

Shore Shore casinos biggest loser in July; Carson Valley casinos on the plus side

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a rough month in July, having their "win" of $23,853,279 down 14.76 percent from figures a year ago. Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville had a "win" of $9,529,716, up eight percent from July of 2016.

As a state, Nevada were down 1.73 percent with a "win" of $997,972,643.

The "win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

DCSO: Increase in auto burglaries in Stateline/Kingsbury area

Since August 24 there have been 13 burglaries with losses or attempted burglaries from unlocked cars in the lower Kingsbury and Stateline area of the South Shore. The crimes have been occurring in the dark hours to vehicles parked in driveways and on the street.

The losses include cash, wallets, a checkbook and and iPad. One witness reported seeing a white male 5’10, wearing shorts and a tee shirt wearing a baseball cap, carrying a backpack, trying to open a car door on a surveillance recording.

Suspects still sought in South Shore stabbing

Suspects are still being sought for the violent robbery, battery and stabbing of a man outside Harrah's Tahoe.

On August 13 at 3:10 a.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were called to the valet area of the Stateline casino where they found a man with a stab wound. The incident occurred on the sidewalk near valet.

Witnesses stated an altercation occurred between the victim and two males who fled the scene after the incident.

City of South Lake Tahoe looks at temporary ban of marijuana sales

There is no need to rush into an ordinance regulating the sale of marijuana in South Lake Tahoe. That was the overwhelming opinion of the SLT City Council Tuesday night after a special, four-hour long Cannabis Workshop.

"We owe it to our community to make sure we take every measure to protect them," said SLT Mayor Austin Sass.

Zephyr Cove power plant fire left thousands in the dark

Longest running Lake Tahoe Halloween party, the Freakers Ball, returns

For almost four decades, Halloween in South Lake Tahoe has been a party like no other with the annual Freakers Ball bringing people in from all over to demonstrate their creative talents in costume creations.

Local Brian Williams started the tradition inside the Tahoe Palace, a Chinese restaurant which was located next to Raley's at Stateline at the time. He named the event after the 1972 Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show song, "Freaker's Ball." The location changed from there, to the old Super 8 (Knight's Inn), Edgewood Tahoe, the former nightclub Turtles, then to Caesars Tahoe.

Kudos: Bread & Broth thanks Temple Bat Yam

Thanks to a generous donor, Temple Bat Yam hosted the August 14th Bread & Broth Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall. B&B, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, began feeding the needy of the Tahoe South Shore community in 1989 as a multi-denominational food outreach program. Throughout the past 28 years, volunteers of all faiths have supported the B&B program and Temple Bat Yam’s Adopt a Day of Nourishment dinner is a testament to the continuing support of all faiths in feeding the hungry of our community.

Lake Tahoe author releases first novel, Serial Dealer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Richard Barton has worked at South Shore casinos Harrah's and Harveys since 1989, giving him enough first-hand knowledge to start a series of books, "Seven, You're Out."

The first of that series, Serial Dealer, has just been released. The story takes place in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas and is about a casino dealer who is also a serial killer.

Two new cubs for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Two new first-year cubs have arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) during the past eight days, bringing the total now being housed in the South Shore non-profit to six.

As is tradition, LTWC names newly arrived cubs after the area they were found.

"Sky" was found on Skyline Avenue in South Lake Tahoe after being seen for more than two weeks around Elks Club Drive. He even stopped by the agency's compound for a look before moving in. Sky weighed in at 36.1 pounds.

Governor, senators and others to speak at 2017 Lake Tahoe Summit

California Senator Diane Feinstein is hosting the 21st annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday, August 22 at Vahalla in the Tallac Historic Site from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The theme for the day is "2017- A Pivotal Point for the Future of Lake Tahoe.”

The event will examine successful restoration projects and ways to address new challenges facing the lake. A key focus will be combating the effects of climate change in the Lake Tahoe basin.

Pope Baldwin Bike Path to see closures as trees are thinned along trail

Trees will be thinned along the Pope Baldwin Bike Path off of State Route 89 north of South Lake Tahoe starting Monday, August 21. Recreationists can expect path closures for up to 30 minutes at a time as flaggers intermittently close the bike path for public safety as trees are falling.

This phase of the project will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and is expected to last several weeks. Bicyclists may use the bike lane on Highway 89 to detour around the traffic control areas.

Labor Day weekend in Lake Tahoe full of activities to replace fireworks

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.

Kids say "thank you" to Lisa Maloff for vehicle donations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When local philanthropist Lisa Maloff found out the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club was without truck after the South Shore facility lost it in a crash, she generously donated money for its replacement.

On Thursday, August 10, the kids and staff of the club thanked Lisa with a ribbon cutting ceremony and large "thank you" poster, along with ribbons in Lisa's favorite color, pink.

SnowGlobe wants 10 year extension, say they contribute $14M to local economy annually

SnowGlobe, the annual outdoor music festival in South Lake Tahoe, has come to town over the New Year's Eve holiday since 2011, and now they want to add ten years to their contract that expires this year.

During Tuesday, August 15th's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, promoters will make a presentation to the City outlining their plans, showing how they think they can become the largest funding source of South Lake Tahoe projects and non-profits.

El Dorado County safety personnel kept busy on South Shore

Wednesday and Thursday were very busy for local safety personnel and volunteers in El Dorado County as they responded to four search and rescue calls and another call concerning suspicious gunshots.

At noon Wednesday, August 9, Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers were initially told a male hiker on the Tahoe Rim Trail near Freel Peak was suffering from an allergic reaction to peanuts. The victim was able to walk out to awaiting rescuers near Willow Creek Road below Horse Thief Canyon.

Summer Bread & Broth 4 Kids partnership with Vail Resorts a success

Over 700 bags of food have been distributed to the youth of South Lake Tahoe so far this summer thanks to a partnership between Bread & Broth 4 Kids (B&B4K) and Vail Resorts/Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Vail CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam donated $125,000 to get a summer food program for youth up to the age of 18 started on the South Shore, and Bread & Broth and Family Resource Center worked together with Heavenly to make it happen.

Will’s Kids event brings art to 300 South Shore youth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a beautiful day for the arts as the second annual “Will’s Kids” art fair took place at Valhalla Tahoe on Friday, August 4th. The event drew three hundred local youth and their families to see a free performance of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. The Young Shakespeare Program takes the mainstage Shakespeare performance from the annual Sand Harbor festival and condenses it to a one hour version accessible for children. This year was the slapstick romantic comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost.

South Tahoe High grad returns as Barton's new spine specialist

A South Tahoe High graduate has come back to the South Shore community to become the new spine specialist at the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics and Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

Zachary Child, MD, a 1991 graduate of STHS, is a board certified orthopedic spine surgeon and musculoskeletal oncologist. He is skilled in addressing back pain and finding surgical and non-surgical options that help patients reach optimal spine health.

Lightning strikes tree as weather brings hail and heavy rain

A strong thunderstorm made its way through the South Shore Sunday at 2:10 p.m., leaving behind heavy rain, small hail, some minor flooding and a downed tree. The National Weather Service in Reno said wind gusts were up to 40 mph in some areas at the time.

On Oglala Street in Meyers, lightning struck the top of a tree and caused it to "explode" according to neighbors. Lake Valley Fire Department arrived almost immediately and there was no major damage, and no injuries.

The Alpine County Grand Jury has released their 2016-17 report and in it they are recommending the County improve their relationship with South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) and work out a new financial deal with the South Lake Tahoe based water provider.

Forest to be thinned along Pope-Baldwin Bike Path and State Route 89

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will begin the mechanical removal of trees on 100 acres of forest lands along State Route 89 and the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path this week. The project should last until mid-October.

South Shore casinos end fiscal year with "win" up 7 percent

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a gaming "win" of $16,742,788 in June, bringing their fiscal year totals to $223,038,389, 7.37 percent ahead of last year. The "win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Their June win was an 9.38 percent increase over the same month in 2016.

The South Shore casinos came in second on the percentage of annual wins, beat by downtown Las Vegas casinos, whose fiscal year win was up 10.75 percent.

South Lake Tahoe’s first ever Brewfest last month was such a huge success that it ran out of beer and raised over $20,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.

El Dorado County sends more money to Cal Tahoe JPA for ambulance services

More money is on the way to the South Shore to fund ambulance services thanks to a unanimous vote by the El Dorado County Supervisors during their June 27 meeting. An amendment was made to the original contract between the Cal Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (Cal Tahoe) and the County, giving an extra $790,000 per year as well as funds to buy a new ambulance.

The extra money will help fund a special team for interfacility transfers.

Ski Patroller from Heavenly still missing on Mt. Rainier

Dmitri Pajitnov (Dima), a member of the Heavenly Mountain Resort Ski Patrol team, has been missing since July 3, 2017 when he fell through a snow bridge on Washington's Mt. Rainier near Pebble Creek as he skied down the mountain.

His body has not been found and friends are heading back to the area this weekend for what they are calling a recovery mission.

Dmitri's ski partner observed the fall and searched for two hours using an avalanche probe and transceiver before descending to Paradise and reporting the incident according to a report from the National Park Service.

The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club’s sponsor crew had a busy evening at their Monday, July 10th Adopt A Day of Nourishment dinner event. Helping the Bread & Broth volunteers at their sponsorship meal were SLTYC members George and Liz-Ann Hainsworth, Tina Miranda and Joseph and Bonnie Phair. This hardworking team prepared the utensils, bagged food ‘giveaways’, served the BBQ chicken dinner, worked the drinks and dessert table and ended their evening cleaning and putting away the tables and chairs.

Local firefighters stop by celebrity golf to support Charles Barkley

"Charles Barkley became a beacon of hope and support for the firefighters and the recovery efforts of the community," Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshal Eric Guevin told the crowd at the 10th tee Friday morning. "Charles, we are here to support and cheer you on in your game today. We want people to care, be aware and prepare for wildfires. On behalf of the Fire Chiefs of Lake Tahoe, Sir Charles thank you for caring."

DUI Checkpoint somewhere on the South Shore Saturday

Another reminder to not drink and drive in South Lake Tahoe will be on Saturday, July 15 when the the California Highway Patrol (CHP) conducts a sobriety checkpoint.

CHP has said they will be operating the checkpoint between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. "somewhere in the east area of El Dorado County." This could be Meyers, South Lake Tahoe or Tahoma.

Two lessons in life shared in Lake Tahoe: Be nice and work hard

Kids from the Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club (BGCLT) were treated to a putting lesson, talk about cyberbullying and autograph session with professional golfer and model Paige Spiranac at Edgewood Tahoe on Tuesday.

Spiranac is on the South Shore for her first American Century Championship.

The 27 kids listened to Spiranac who is a national ambassador for the Cybersmile Foundation and, as a victim of cyberbullying growing up, Spiranac regularly addresses children on how to prevent and combat bullying.

New bike ride share program to start in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

South Lake Tahoe is about to be invaded by a fleet of 200 cutting-edge lime green "smart" bicycles. LimeBike out of the Bay Area unveiled their new dockless ride share on Tuesday, giving the public a sneak peak of what will officially start on the South Shore Saturday, July 15 for a pilot program.

"We are thrilled to be here," said Andrew Savage, Vice President of Strategic Development for LimeBike. "This will make mobility more fun."
