No moratorium on vacation rentals in El Dorado County

Tuesday's El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting was just as all other meetings about vacation home rentals have been: A full house and a large contingent passionately representing both sides of the issue.

Supervisor Shiva Frentzen sought conceptual approval of an urgency ordinance to place a moratorium on the issuance of new vacation home rental (VHR) permits in the unincorporated portions of the County located in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

El Dorado County to hold special meeting for vacation home rentals

There will be a special meeting of the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors to discuss vacation home rentals (VHRs) in South Lake Tahoe at 6:00 p.m. on February 1 at the City Council chambers.

Supervisor Sue Novasel said she believes a meeting about the South Shore should be held on the South Shore so more of the citizens could attend and participate.

The hot topic of VHRs has divided many neighbors with opinions on both side of the issue.

Suspected car thief leads police on chase from Carson City to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) attempted to pull over a vehicle in Carson City Thursday night, but the driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase until the car crashed in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore, over 35 miles away.

NHP followed the car up Spooner Summit on Highway 50 to Stateline. Per protocol they won't engage in high speed chases so followed him until he approached Stateline. Troopers called ahead to South Lake Tahoe, advising police that the vehicle was headed in their direction.

Meyers Area Plan topic of three upcoming meetings

Meyers, the commercial, public services, and recreation hub of unincorporated El Dorado County at the South Shore may soon have a new area plan and there are three upcoming public meetings on the plan. It could be adopted at the third meeting, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board meeting on February 28.

SnowGlobe thrills attendees as Khalid and others take the stage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Fans of electronic music have flocked to South Lake Tahoe for the annual SnowGlobe outdoor music festival held December 29-31 at, one the Community Fields. The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field.

Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, underage drinking and drugs.

GoFundMe account set up for STHS grad involved in serious crash

A former South Lake Tahoe resident visiting family for the holidays on the South Shore was on his way home to La Mesa, California when he and girlfriend were involved in a three-car head-on collision south of Kramer's Crossing on Highway 395 near Victorville on December 28, 2017.

Chris "Coco" Cocores, 26, was in a Toyota Corolla driven by his girlfriend, 21-year-old Cecilia Casares, when the car crossed over a solid yellow line to pass a slower vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. They collided with two vehicles heading northbound.

Almost local "Joyzu" hits the main stage at SnowGlobe Sunday

It won't be a far drive for friends and family of Joyzu when they head to South Lake Tahoe on New Year's Eve to watch the El Dorado Hills pair perform on the main state at SnowGlobe.

Carson Willms and Quinton Pope started playing music together while at Oakridge High, and continued their hobby when they both went away to college...Willms to Sacramento State and Pope to University of Colorado. That hobby is now their passion, and their business, as they release more songs and gather more fans of their unique genre.

Gaming revenue on the South Shore drops, gains on North Shore and Carson Valley

Gaming revenue on the South Shore dropped by almost three percent in November compared to the same time last year, according to figures released Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Stateline casinos were not alone on the down side (-2.92 percent), they were joined by Clark County (-3.21 percent) and the State of Nevada as a whole (-2.30 percent).

Carson City and the Carson Valley saw climbs in their "gaming win" with a gain of 10.83 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Over 2,000 NV Energy customers without power on South Shore

5:45 p.m. UPDATE - 15 customers are still without power at this time. NV Energy estimates they'll be restored by 8:00 p.m. tonight.

NV Energy is reporting that 2,434 of their customers on the South Shore have been without power since 2:27 p.m. Thursday. Equipment failure is being cited as the cause and estimated restoration of all power is expected by 5:30 p.m.

Bay area residents arrested in Stateline on burglary charges

8:00PM Update 12/18/17: After the trio's arrest, detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department served a search warrant on a motel room at Motel 6 on Highway 50, locating a significant amount of stolen property that had recently been reported stolen in Douglas County. They also located numerous items that may have been stolen, but were not previously reported. .

Bay Area toddler dies after being found in casino hot tub

Updated information 12/17/17 9:00PM:

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has announced that a four-year-old from Redwood City, California has died on the South Shore.

At 1:27 p.m. Sunday, December 17, emergency personnel were called to MontBleu Casino and Resort in Stateline, Nevada after the toddler was found in a hot tub. He was transported by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department to Barton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The next of kin has been notified.

Power outage hits South Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley

UPDATE: 1:00 a.m. 12/17/17 - NV Energy has restored power to their customers. It is unknown at this time what caused the four-hour long outage.

NV Energy is reporting a few power outages to their customers starting at 8:45 p.m. Saturday. At the lake, 4,385 customers are affected, with another 3,300 in the Carson Valley. NV Energy states the problem is from equipment failure and they expect to have power restored by 10:00 p.m.

2018 Business Expo in South Lake Tahoe

The popular and dynamic business event, the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) Business Expo, is now accepting booth registrations and early bird discounts are now in place.

The event this year is on March 30, 2018 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will be held at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Letter: LTVA and STR thank community for food and toy donations

For the fifth year, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) and South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling (STR) teamed up to benefit Christmas Cheer All Year with “drive and drop” at LTVA’s California Visitors Center and curbside collection on regular garbage pick-up days.

Once again we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our South Shore community. 160 pounds of food and 85 toys were collected.

Thank you to all the individuals and businesses who participated in making the holidays a little brighter for those in need.

2017 Tahoe in Depth issue covers multiple Lake Tahoe challenges and actions

For five years, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has been publishing "Tahoe In Depth," a newspaper highlighting Lake Tahoe and how to protect, enjoy and explore the Lake Tahoe Basin. It also highlights environmental accomplishment and projects around the lake.

Man arrested on felony DUI charges after crashing into two cars and light pole

A Fallbrook, California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Saturday after allegedly driving at a high rate of speed through Stateline while intoxicated before hitting two cars and a light pole.

Law Enforcement Appreciation Week at many South Lake Tahoe restaurants

If you are a member of law enforcement, South Lake Tahoe is the place to be this week as you are being celebrated with free meals at several local restaurants.

In an effort to support police officers and deputies, and to recognize the challenges that they face every day, local restaurateur Ted Kennedy challenged other South Lake Tahoe restaurants to join him in honoring law enforcement with free meals.

CVS to acquire Aetna for $69B; Lower healthcare costs and better experiences promised

Drugstore chain operator CVS Health is buying health-insurer Aetna for $69 billion, a transaction that promises to fill an unmet need in the current health care system according to a joint press release Sunday.

The deal would enable CVS to expand its range of health services to Aetna’s vast membership, with CVS’ storefronts becoming community medical hubs with primary-care, drug-management and other services. "It will redefine access to high-quality care in lower cost, local settings whether in the community, at home, or through digital tools," said the company.

Monthly gaming figures released: South Shore casinos up over $2M

Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) released their October figures today and they show revenue for casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe were up $2,293,554 over the same month in 2016. That is a 16.19 percent gain.

They showed a gaming "win" of $16,462,763.

The "win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Gardnerville man sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual exploitation of a minor

Stephan L. DeGraffenreid will be spending the next 15 years in prison after being sentenced Wednesday by United States District Judge Howard D. McKibben.

DeGraffenreid plead guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor in September. He was sentenced to the minimum number of years for those charges.

El Dorado County joins others in state to temporarily ban sales of cannabis

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors have voted for a temporary ban of commercial licenses for both medical and recreational cannabis in El Dorado County with the exception of medical cannabis dispensaries allowed to operate under ordinance 4999.

At the same time, they voted to create a new ad hoc Cannabis Advisory Committee to study and create ballot measures for different cannabis commercial uses tied to
taxation for a local election.

Supervisor Sue Novasel, who represents the South Shore will join Supervisor Ranalli on the new committee.

Snow overnight in South Lake Tahoe, sunny weekend ahead

The skies are clearing over Lake Tahoe Friday morning with cool temperatures and some snow still lingering. As this storm moves to the east, South Lake Tahoe should see a high near 42 and wind gusts up to 25 mph. This weekend forecast includes a high of 50 and sunny skies.

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 23" of snow over the last 48 hours, just in time for opening day November 17. On the North Shore, Squaw Valley had 7" in last 24 hours and Mt. Rose reports 33-40" during this storm.

Wind, rain and snow in South Lake Tahoe, snow at upper elevations

The South Shore has been getting just rain, and lots of it since the recent storm reached the Sierra Wednesday. Heavenly Mountain Resort received 11" of snow overnight, just ahead of their Friday opening day. Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows each received 14" from this storm, and 7" at Kirkwood.

Snow is expected at both lake level and at the resorts tonight before the system passes through.

Caltrans testing cannons near Echo Summit Tuesday

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is testing their avalanche control above Highway 50 and Echo Summit on Tuesday, November 14. Some cannons were tested during the morning and another set will be tested in early afternoon.

Some loud booms will be heard around the South Shore during testing.

Prescribed fires resume around Lake Tahoe

Lake Valley, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue Lake Tahoe Basin prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks, weather permitting. Operations are scheduled to take place at or near D.L. Bliss State Park, Carnelian Bay, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Diamond Peak Ski Resort area, Glenbrook, upper and lower Kingsbury Grade and south and east of the Lake Tahoe Airport.

Blue Ribbon Award winners announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – The winners of the 10th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday night at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Over 300 community members attended to celebrate the winners of seven awards that honor outstanding South Shore businesses, organizations and individuals for civic contributions, tourism experiences, customer service and entrepreneurial achievements.

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship

American Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.

On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.

New cannons to fight avalanches in South Lake Tahoe

Many people in Meyers and South Lake Tahoe heard "loud booms" early Tuesday afternoon. Those who have lived through winter recognized the sound as avalanche control cannons, but with no snow the reasons weren't clear.

Here is the story:

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) was installing new cannons to replace the 25-year-old equipment on Flagpole Mountain, home to the Echo Summit avalanche control operations.

Lake Tahoe ski areas planned opening dates

After a winter of historic snowfall and atmospheric rivers, what will 2017-18 have in store?

That has yet to be seen, but many resorts around the Lake Tahoe Basin are making plans for opening even without that "one good dump."

Meyers Area Plan could be adopted at upcoming meetings

Meyers, the commercial, public services, and recreation hub of unincorporated El Dorado County at the South Shore may soon have a new area plan.

The Meyers Area Plan is the comprehensive long-term plan for the Meyers Community and, if approved, will replace the original Meyers Community Plan (MCP) adopted in 1993. The MCP currently serves as the comprehensive land use and zoning plan for the community of Meyers, consistent with the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan and the El Dorado County General Plan. It was originally meant to last a decade, not the almost 25 years its been in place.

Tax increase to fix South Lake Tahoe roads to be determined Tuesday

South Lake Tahoe voters will be deciding the future of roads in the City when they determine the fate of Measure C on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

Voters will decide if a one-half cent sales tax will be added in the town to provide approximately $2.5 million that will fix potholes and pave, repair, maintain local roads.

The following polling locations are established for the November 7, 2017 election:

Several reports of fireball in sky over California, seen from Lake Tahoe

People from Fresno to Santa Rosa, California reported seeing a fireball across the sky Sunday evening around 5:24 p.m.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) received 19 reports from observers who said "the light got bigger before it burst, leaving a trail of smaller balls before disappearing," "it was a white streak followed by a few tiny fragments. Ended in the main fireball turning to a green color," and "it was flickering and sparkly, like a roman candle being shot across the sky."

Community and education celebrated at Tahoe Women's Community Fund dinner

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund celebrated their third annual Membership Celebration this past Thursday at Harvey's. With over 150 in attendance, we celebrated the success of our collective giving circle! Dr. Guy Lease gave an inspiring keynote speech on "The Power of Education in Our Community", and Karin Holmes was honored as our first annual Woman of Distinction! The positive strength in the room was amazing!

South Tahoe Now: Why Measure C is needed now

Many of South Lake Tahoe's roads are decades past their prime, and Measure C is in front of voters November 7 to increase taxes by one-half percent to pay for their maintenance and repair.

I support Measure C and let me tell you why, but it will have to start with a look back to see how we got here.

El Dorado County may revamp VHR ordinance

As with meetings concerning vacation rentals (VHRs) in the City of South Lake Tahoe, many residents from the county turned out to voice concerns with the El Dorado County's Tax Collector C.L. Cherie Raffety Wednesday.

What was different than the City's meetings, Raffety limited how the public could speak about noise, parking, occupancy, hot tubs, zoning and other issues they have in their neighborhoods. She broke up the issues and heard concerns, one subject at a time.
