New on the South Shore: Bohemian Beads & Arts

It's been just four weeks since Bohemian Beads & Arts opened in South Lake Tahoe, and they've already started to create a buzz. Artists, beaders, crafters and other creative people have found the store to be their new "go to" store for supplies.

If you've ever been in the middle of a project and found you needed a tube of paint, a brush or a jar of Gesso, now there is no more need to run off the hill to make a purchase.

Tahoe Adventure Film Festival returns to the South Shore

As we at the Nevada Department of Transportation and Q&D Construction substantially complete the Kingsbury Grade Pavement Reconstruction Project this week, we want to thank local community members and businesses for their understanding and support.

Celebrity Golf Tournament gives over $115,000 to local causes and charities

South Lake Tahoe non-profits were awarded $48,000 during the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board meeting today. The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. The LTVA, in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional $67,200 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during tournament week to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Booster Club, Boys and Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship

Changes on the South Shore: Motel gone, restaurant, spa and commercial space on way

Last spring the South Lake Tahoe planning commission approved plans for turning the Highland Inn motel into commercial space. Original plans for the space include a spa, restaurant and bar and other businesses.

A sign hanging in the front window of the former motel is advertising space available in the new building along with a photo of the planned rendition.

New Lake Tahoe restaurant's Latin cuisine star of ribbon cutting

If you haven't made it to Azul Latin Kitchen yet it may be time to schedule a visit for lunch, dinner or a cocktail. The decorations are the bar are very creative and homey, including furniture hanging on the wall and crates as the light fixtures.

Azul opened in the Heavenly Village several weeks ago but they just had their official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on November 7. Many people from the South Lake Tahoe business community stopped by to enjoy the food and drinks, many for the first time. A band played near the fire pit outside.

"Sneak Peek" of the Proposed Loop Road Open House

During Wednesday night's community Open House concerning the proposed Loop Road project in South Lake Tahoe, people can preview the plans and provide feedback on any elements of the plan.

From 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, staff members from supporting agencies will be on hand to present the proposed plan for the U.S. Hwy 50 Revitalization Plan (also known as the Loop Road).

South Shore high schools do well in NIAA State Cross Country Races

South Tahoe High's Boys cross country team is bringing home a Division 1-A fifth place finish from the 2014 NIAA State Cross Country Championships in Las Vegas. Their counterpart across the state line, Division III Whittell High School, is also bringing home fifth place honors from the tournament.

South Tahoe's highest finisher was Dillon Lemons who finished 18th. He was followed by Orion Maxwell (21st), Paul Mutz (25th), Mario Mangiaracina (33rd), George Freeman (42nd), Paul Hoefer (45th) and Chase Stalter (52nd). Their top five finishers ended up with a total time of 1:31:27.1.

California Tahoe Conservancy posts tags on their South Lake Tahoe properties

With empty lots in the South Lake Tahoe area owned by various agencies and private owners, the public doesn't know who to report incidents or situations to unless they are marked.

In order to help the public, the California Tahoe Conservancy began posting property tags today to help the public better identify its lands on the South Shore.

Ceremony to celebrate opening of new bike path segment

If you've driven past South Tahoe High School in the last month you've most likely noticed a new bike trail heading from Lake Tahoe Blvd and Viking Way, through the forest to Sawmill Pond.

This new segment of bike trail, which is part of the Lake Tahoe Blvd Enhancement Project, will help to connect Meyers to the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Forest Service fuelwood permit sales end November 14

The last day to purchase a fuelwood permit from the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is Friday, November 14, 2014, and the last day to cut wood is Sunday, November 16, 2014. Fuelwood permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

All precincts are open from 7 am to 8 pm. Public can weigh in on County's Mental Health Plan

The passage of Proposition 63 in 2004 gave needed funds to support county health programs. Every year the public can view the proposed budge and plans for the El Dorado County's portion of the funds received via MHSA (Mental Health Services Act).

The first meeting for the South Shore will be on November 20 at 10 a.m. at the South Lake Tahoe library located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

Community update meeting on the South Shore Community Vitalization Project

Known as the "Loop Road," the U.S. 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project is about two months away from having its environmental analysis completed. Expecting that completion in January, 2015, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is holding a community meeting will update people on the plan to realign traffic through the casino corridor.

Planners are working on a concept with a more walkable, bikeable and transit friendly "main street" from Pioneer Trail's intersection with Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to the loop road to the east side of MontBleu.

Family friendly treats for Halloween

There are several safe trick or treat events going on around the South Shore on Halloween as well as thousands of homes to visit along city streets. Rain is expected as the sun sets so dress warm, stay dry, be safe and have fun!

Halloween Cove returns to the Beach Retreat & Lodge located at 3411 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Kids will go from room to room getting treats, enjoy face painting, games, photos and music. Head for the courtyard of the hotel. It goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and it's free.

Controlled burns continue on the South Shore

Prescribed fire operations resumed in South Lake Tahoe today in the Christmas Valley, Spooner, Heavenly, Elizabeth Lane (Hurricane Bay on the West Shore) and Sawmill Pond areas.

The controlled burns will continue as conditions allow.

Opinion: Is Meyers a community willing to work together?

After witnessing the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District (TPRID) meeting last week I starting thinking how the residents of Meyers and Tahoe Paradise could be better served.

What happened at the TPRID meeting was a sad display of a board in action. There was yelling, arguing and, what one person witnessing everything said, “don’t air your dirty laundry in a meeting like this.”

Casinos on the South Shore win almost $24M in September

South Shore casinos posted a win for the second month in a row in September, ending up 7% above the same month last year according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Casinos took in $23,781,570 for a month that saw an overall loss for the state of 5.96%. The state took in $901,697,989.

The biggest "winner" in the state were the casinos on the Boulder Strip who saw an increase of 14.28% while the opposite end of the spectrum were North Lake Tahoe casinos who's win was down 15.44%. They took in $2,194,567.

Measures M, N, and O in El Dorado County - What do they mean for residents?

The campaign posters on Measures M, N and O that have plastered the west slope for a few months have now made their way to South Lake Tahoe. But, what are they all about?

Growth, to put it in one word.

On one side you have people who want to have control of growth in the county and not let it go to Sacramento. On the other side there is a grass roots movement to keep all growth out of the county unless Cal Trans says its okay.

Whittell High football team celebrates Homecoming with win, record now 9-0

The Whittell Warriors celebrated Homecoming Thursday night with a win over Excel Christian our of Sparks, NV. Their record is now 9-0. The score isn't in yet and will be posted as soon as received.

Next game for the undefeated team from the South Shore October 30 against Virginia City. The home game will start at 7 p.m.

County Supervisors holding 10/28 meeting in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe residents will have a chance to see the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors in action on Tuesday, October 28 as they have their meeting on the east slope.

Many topics pertaining to the South SHore will be on the agenda.

The South Lake Tahoe Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan will be presented by a consultant team. A vote will then be taken on whether to approve the plan and start the environmental review process. Those costs would be split with the City of South Lake Tahoe.

County meeting with vacation home owners to create "Good Neighbor Program"

It's 11 p.m. on a Saturday night in the middle of summer and you've just turned out the lights to go to bed. But, you're finding this an impossible task because of the blaring music coming from the vacation rental next door.

It's midnight on Friday night in January. You're catching the end of a good movie in front of the fire but are finding it hard to hear the TV in your own home. The loud talking and screaming from the young adults in the hottub next door is louder that it should be.

Soroptimists giving away $25,000 in grants to local non-profits

South Lake Tahoe area non-profits will be receiving $25,000 in grants from the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation (SISLT).

SISLT has invited local tax-exempt, nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations to apply for grant funding for Community Service projects and programs.

Op/Ed: Protecting our Communities, Forests, and Water

With California and Nevada grappling with a third year of drought, one of the largest and most complex challenges we face over the long run at Lake Tahoe is adapting to a changing climate.

Climate change will affect the protection and restoration of our beautiful mountain lake as well as the expansive forests around it. And the health of our lake, forests, and communities are all intertwined.

Fire operations begin Saturday at several South Shore locations

A multi-agency prescribed fire operation begins on Saturday, October 18 as the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team has crews from Tahoe Douglas Fire and the U.S. Forest Service at several locations around the lake.

Fall and winter bring cooler temperatures and precipitation, which favor prescribed burning. Each operation follows a prescribed fire burn plan, which considers temperature, humidity, wind, moisture of the vegetation, and conditions for the dispersal of smoke. This information is used to decide when and where to burn.

Prescribed burns to take place on urban lots in Lake Tahoe basin

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the fall/winter prescribed fire program this week. Operations may take place tomorrow, October 16, 2014, on various urban lots around the Lake Tahoe Basin including Elizabeth Drive on the West Shore, Christmas Valley, Angora Creek, Elks Club Drive, Echo View Estates, and Bakersfield Avenue on the South Shore.

Water rates for Nevada customers on South Shore could rise 25%

Douglas County Commissioners may decide to raise the water rates for the County's Lake Tahoe customers by 25% during their meeting at the lake on Thursday.

The October 16th agenda is full of items pertaining to the South Shore, including a possible decision to merge the Zephyr Cove Water Utility District, the Cave Rock/Uppaway Water Systems, and Skyland Water System and establish the Lake Tahoe Water Utility Fund effective November 1.

Changes on the South Shore: Tahoe Woods Condominiums

Editor's note: This is part of a series on all of the change going on in South Lake Tahoe. We'll be updating you with photos and news.

What was once a run down trailer park, and sometime homeless camp, will soon be a three story, 28 unit condominium complex named Tahoe Woods Condominiums. In an area at the southern end of Cedar and Manzanita Avenues, seven separate buildings are currently being constructed amidst the trees. The northern tip of the property is a pathway that runs adjacent to the Tahoe Meadows community.

Marijuana grow houses becoming a problem in South Lake Tahoe

There are an estimated 500 unpermitted, illegal marijuana grow houses on the South Shore according to local law enforcement. In the city limits, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler estimates there are 300 houses where marijuana is growing illegally with another 200 in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore according to SLEDNET’s Matt Underhill. (SLEDNET stands for South Lake El Dorado Narcotics Enforcement Team, a joint drug enforcement task force)
