Garden Tour at South Lake Tahoe home on Saturday

The South Lake Tahoe garden of John and Cathy Hindmarsh will be on display Saturday, July 26.

The showing of the garden is hosted by Aspen Hollow Nursery at the Hindmarsh home located at 642 Tehama Drive. Stop by between 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.. Refreshments will be provided and donations to Christmas Cheer are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.

This July featured garden is the first installment of the "South of
South Shore" 2014 open garden tour. The garden was designed and constructed by John Fellows of Aspen Hollow.

Forest fuels project in South Lake Tahoe to continue

Thinning of trees for fuels reduction and forest health will continue next week on approximately 170 acres of National Forest System lands on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

Beginning Monday, July 28, 2014, thinning will take place off of North Upper Truckee Road near West San Bernardino Avenue, Pioneer Trail northwest of forest road 12N08 (Powerline), Pioneer Trail southwest of Columbine Trail and on some urban lots in the Tahoe Island Drive area near 15th Street. Thinning operations in these locations may vary over the next several weeks.

Hot August Nights cruising into South Lake Tahoe

More than 400 classic cars are headed into South Lake Tahoe this weekend as part of the annual Hot August Nights celebrations. Cars lining the street with their hoods up, rumbling engines, the sounds of rock and roll, cruising and fun vendors will been seen on the south shore Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26.

Power out throughout South Lake Tahoe

8:20 PM UPDATE:According to Liberty Energy, they are slowly getting power back on, starting up the grid with Glenbrook. It may take a few more hours to get the whole South Shore back up and running.

South Lake Tahoe is without power this afternoon due to a problem with NV Energy losing electricity. The region lost connection to both transformers coming out of Nevada.

Minden and Alpine County are also without power.

The energy company is working on the problem but repair time is unknown.

The forum was rescheduled from it's original date of July 22.

TahoeChamber, Tahoe Daily Tribune and Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will host the forum in anticipation of the November election in which two candidates, Kenny Curtzwiler and Sue Novasel, will campaign for the position to be vacated by current Supervisor Norma Santiago.

Kudos: Music on the Beach BAHM!

Thank you to all of those who joined us to kick start the summer season. A big thank you to Zephyr Cove Resort for hosting the Music on the Beach BAHM! this past Tuesday evening. South Tahoe Graduate Ethan Nivan is directing the hilarious play, The Servant of Two Masters which can be seen at the historic Valhalla Boathouse Theater over the next two weekends.

Whether it’s date night, girls night out, or family night, make your plans to see this hilarious play directed by Nivan, who is a recent graduate of Ashland University and the veteran of many successful South Lake Tahoe performances. A high-flung/low-brow comedy about a hungry servant who hatches a scheme to double his wages (and his meals) by serving two masters at once.

Volunteers Remove 2,260 Pounds of Trash From Six Lake Tahoe Beaches

Thousands flocked to Lake Tahoe beaches for the 4th of July and left behind thousands of pounds of trash. Several groups have been participating in the Adopt a Beach cleanup program that is getting volunteers out to clean up the mess, both trash and fireworks debris.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe had over 120 volunteers participate in their annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanup. They cleaned at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Shoals on the East Shore, and Kiva, Regan and El Dorado beaches on the South Shore for a total of about 3 miles of shoreline.

Dollar Tree Opens Store in South Lake Tahoe

One of the country's favorite discount stores has opened a store on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Dollar Tree held a grand opening on Saturday, July 5th at it's Round Hill Mall location.

"You'll be amazed at what you can find at Dollar Tree," manager Lance Hendee told SouthTahoeNow. "We carry almost everything under the sun."

Hendee said their grand opening was a little slow, but that they were expecting that due to the holiday and the fact that "most people don't know we're here."

Volunteers Invited to Clean Up Tahoe Beaches on July 5

The League to Save Lake Tahoe will host its annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanups at five locations throughout Lake Tahoe on July 5. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to join the effort from Tahoe City to Nevada Beach and South Shore.

South Shore Casinos Have Big Gain: Win Up 18% in May

Casinos in South Lake Tahoe won $17,320,995 in May, up 18.37% over last year. They gained the most in the State of Nevada which saw an overall win of 8.11%.

North Lake Tahoe casinos won %1,837,836, up 1.63% and casinos in the Carson Valley lost 2.71% with their win of $8,618,391.

Since the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1, the South Lake Tahoe casinos are down 3.41% with a total gaming win of $192,212,817.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

As in other situations I recall over the years, we come together in times of crisis and demonstrate that we care deeply about this special place we call home. New Bike Trail in South Lake Tahoe Dedicated on Thursday

The second segment of the Stateline to Stateline Bikeway was dedicated during a ceremony on Thursday. The 1.2-mile shared-use bike path connects Elks Point with Round hill Pines on the Nevada side.

This new stretch adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.

2nd Phase of South Lake Tahoe Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance to be Delayed

After lengthy debate during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, a 3-2 vote changed the direction of the second phase of the plastic bag ban.

In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.

City of South Lake Tahoe Forecasts Negative Cash Flow Unless Revenues Increase Significantly

The City of South Lake Tahoe made several strategic moves in 2010, allowing them to survive the financial crisis which caused so many problems in 2010. As the Five Year Financial Forecast is presented during Tuesday's City Council Meeting, it will be evident that it is time again to make more strategic moves to stay in the black and be sustainable. One such move should be a focus on growing the local economy.

The US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the Loop Road Project, is halfway through an Environmental Impact Study which should be released in about nine months.

Dedication for Latest Phase of Stateline to Stateline Bike Path

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.

Late Night Runners in South Lake Tahoe for Reno-Tahoe Odyssey

Runners with lights and reflective gear ran through South Lake Tahoe Friday night as part of the 10th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey relay race. Drivers in town might have seen the blinking arrows, informing runners of the route. Others in town reported seeing the bonfires and groups of people stationed where runners were changed. The Beachcomber Inn housed one team for a quick nap and shower before they headed to the finish.

Valhalla Renaissance Faire in South Lake Tahoe For Next Two Weekends

Be transformed back to the 14th century this weekend in South Lake Tahoe as the 22nd Renaissance Faire makes Camp Richardson their home for two weekends.

Have you ever seen lance splitting jousting? Shot a quiver of arrows? Seen sword fighting? If you head over to the faire you'll see all that, and more, including a thousand actors dressed in period clothing walking around, taking to the stage or singing and juggling.

If you've never been, this is a fun and "must do" event on the south shore. It runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Sundays.

Gaming Figures for April Just Released: South Shore Casinos Have Huge Loss

Casinos on the south shore of Lake Tahoe had a gaming win of $9,080,729 in April, which is down 42.27% from the same month last year.

The Nevada Gaming Control released their monthly report this week, showing that the state's win overall was down just .27% for a total of $852,005,476.

The local casinos had to biggest loss for the state of Nevada while Wendover and Downtown Las Vegas casinos had the biggest gains.

South Lake Tahoe casinos have had losses for 6 of the last 7 months, with March being the only month with a gain over the previous year's figures.

Forest Thinning Begins Near South Tahoe High

Thinning of the forest areas near South Tahoe High and the Sand Pit OHV began last week. This is part of the South Shore Fuels Reductions and Healthy Forest Restoration Project which will thin out about 10,000 acres between Cascade Lake and Stateline, Nevada.

The thinning of trees is for fuels reduction and forest health.

The Forest Service has closed the areas in units 19 and 117 (marked by a red "X" on the map above, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily through October 14, 2014, for public safety due to heavy equipment operations and falling trees.

South Lake Blood Drive Celebrates 48 Years

This June, the South Lake Tahoe Community Blood Drive will celebrate its 48th year anniversary. The public is encouraged to donate blood and help save lives.

The community blood drive will take place on Monday, June 2 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, formerly the Embassy Suites, located at 4130 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in the first floor conference rooms. BloodSource hosts the blood drive and Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary sponsors the event.

X Hale Lounge Opening up in South Lake Tahoe

South Shore locals looking to diversify their nights out now have another option in X Hale Lounge at Stateline. It is a full-service bar and lounge that serves hookah, which is a flavored tobacco or non-tobacco delivered through a water pipe.

X Hale Lounge also features guest DJs and weekly drink specials.

All community members are invited to the ribbon cutting which will feature hookah samples and $1 drinks for those with a local I.D.

Tahoe Regional Plan Being Challenged in Court by Sierra Club Once Again

A coalition of all counties present at the lake along with residents, environmental groups, legislators and business groups were behind the Tahoe Regional Plan and urged its adoption in 2012. Since that time, the Sierra Club and "Friends of the West Shore" have sued (in February 2013) to oppose the plan, lost their motion (April 2014) and now, as of May 7, have filed an appeal to the court's decision to uphold the 2012 Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.

South Lake Tahoe Landmark Restaurant Torn Down; New Building on the Way

It was once a plumbing supply store. It was once Johnny's Basque Restaurant. It was once the Vali-Hi. It was once the China Wok. For a short time, it was Godfather's Pizza. Most recently, it was a series of Chinese buffets. But that was then.

The building was torn down last week to make way for the future home of SUP Tahoe and South Shore Bikes.

South Lake Tahoe Community Input Sought for Wildfire Protection Plan

Living in a forest gives great benefits, but it also carries with it the risk of forest fires.

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for South Lake Tahoe is being developed jointly by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

The community is being asked to complete a survey which will help the agencies prepare the CWPP. This will enable the creation of a plan on how the south shore will reduce it's risk of wildfire by identifying strategic sites and methods for fuel reduction projects.

19 Nabbed in Phony Contractor Sting in South Lake Tahoe

A simultaneous sting operation between the California State License Board and the Nevada Contractors License Board snared 11 people on the California side of South Lake Tahoe and 8 on the Nevada side on Wednesday.

Named the "Border Blitz," the sting was conducted at a SLT single family home near the Hwy 89 and Hwy 50 intersection (the "Y")and at a condominium in Stateline, NV. Investigators from the CSLB and NCLB posed as homeowners seeking bids for various projects that included exterior painting, deck work, landscaping, and other tasks requiring general "B" contractor skills.

Kingsbury Grade Closes to Valley Traffic Thursday; Bus Ridership to be Monitored

May 1 is here, and than means road construction on Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) which is closing off through traffic to the Carson Valley is also here.

South Lake Tahoe Casinos Win Big in March

Casinos on the south shore won $14,930,904 in March, a 31.64% increase in gaming profits over the same month last year.

The Nevada Gaming Control released their monthly report Tuesday, showing that the state's win was up 7.6% for a total of $982,168,390.

Local casinos had the biggest gain, followed by North Lake Vegas who saw a 15.08% gain. The areas with the biggest losses were all in Washoe County. North Lake Tahoe casinos had a 14.82% drop in profits, Reno's drop was 10.76% and the rest of the county had a loss of 15.39%.

Nine Decades of South Lake Tahoe Memories

South Lake Tahoe Fuels Reduction Work Resumes

Over 460 acres of Forest Service latd in South Lake Tahoe will be thinned out this Spring to improve forest health and reduce the risk of sever wildiires on the South Shore.

Starting Monday, April 21, The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will resume work on the South Shore Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Project.

Mobile Food Pantry to Distribute Food in South Lake Tahoe on April 23rd

Fundraiser Saturday for Motorcycle Accident Victim's Family

Push Fitness will host a fundraiser from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 12 for their massage therapist, Luisa, who is recovering from the loss of her daughter, Audrey Genesis Rugamas. Her coworkers hope to raise funds for living expenses so she can take time off work.

The event will include face painting, fitness pictures, karate show, waxing and sugaring, cut-a-thon, chair message.

Funds raised with these services will go toward Luisa’s expenses.

South Shore Gaming Profits Drop for 5th Straight Month

Stateline casinos took in $14,741,363 in February, 2014, which is down 9.51% from the same month a year ago.

The State Gaming Control Board reported today that the gross gaming win in Nevada for February was $926,083,897. The statewide gaming win, computed before business expenses and taxes, is down 13.71% from February of 2013.

The biggest loss was experienced by the casinos in North Lake Tahoe where revenues dropped 22.18% and on the Las Vegas Strip where they saw a drop of 20.17%.

New South Shore Local Coffee Treat: The Bean Bar Coffee House

The Bean Bar has been open on the south shore of Lake Tahoe since December and has already become a favorite of both South Lake Tahoe locals and visitors.

Located in the Round Hill Shopping Center, the Bean Bar is open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for now, and once summer arrives they'll extend hours to 6 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe Business EXPO on Friday

A record-breaking 100 businesses will participate in the 2014 Business EXPO –“Tahoe South in ACTION” this Friday, March 28. Developing Trends to be Highlighted at Annual South Lake Tahoe Tourism Forum
