INLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The 6th Annual Tahoe Film Fest presents environmental and independent feature length and award winning films to North Lake Tahoe from December 3-6, 2020. Special guests and filmmakers will be present at many of the films.

The festival takes on a new look during the pandemic. The films originally scheduled for Northstar had to be moved as movie theaters must only operate outdoors due to Placer County's Purple Tier. The theaters on the Nevada side can still show films but only at 50 percent capacity.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) has started a series of virtual field trips for teachers that have been designed with flexibility in mind during this ever-changing school year.

Using a variety of technologies, the TERC Education Team has converted some of their most popular field trips to a virtual format:

Join Scott Fitzgerrell and UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center director Geoff Schladow as they kayak Lake Tahoe in support of the Citizen Science Tahoe project September 20-26, 2020. Using the app they will collect valuable water quality, algal growth, and microplastics data.

All participants are responsible for bringing their own watercraft, personal protective equipment (flotation device while on the water and a mask while on land), food, beverages, and planning their own transportation to/from the departure and arrival sites.

On June 10 the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center released findings from its annual Lake Tahoe Clarity Report, which showed average Lake clarity for 2019 was 62.7 feet, the second-smallest annual average depth recorded since systematic annual measurements began in 1968.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is closed, but they are sharing with parents, teachers, students, caregivers a list of free STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) resources.

Due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic schools across the country, including UC Davis, are shut down. TERC has been closed its science centers and suspended regular program offerings.

They said they realize the challenges many parents who have had to home school their children may need help getting through the normal day-to-day schooling.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center is seeking volunteers to assist with this year's Science Expo. No experience is necessary and the job is "fun and easy."

Volunteers will facilitate a hands-on science investigation station with small groups of elementary students. All the volunteers need is a willingness to have fun and share science with local youth. Training will be provided prior to the event.

The 5th annual Tahoe Film Fest presents an incredible selection of new feature films and documentaries on various topics, as well as important award-winning environmental films. Several filmmakers introduce their works. The event is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy almost thirty films and interact with other film aficionados.

All proceeds from the festival, which runs on the North Shore from December 5-8, go to support educational programs at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What a difference a year can make! In 2018, the annual test of Lake Tahoe's clarity value made a drastic change and improved to 70.9 feet. This is 10.5 more feet than was seen in 2017.

In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

Promoting resilience is key to supporting healthy development in youth, yet currently, there is a decline in youth resilience across the United States. About 1 in 4 youth develop a mental health disorder which can lead to poor school outcomes, risky behaviors, self-harm and even suicide.

Warming temperatures pose major challenges for Lake Tahoe's environment, communities, and the outdoor recreation that drives its economy. Research by University of California, Davis's Tahoe Environmental Research Center, University of Nevada, Reno, and Desert Research Institute clearly shows Lake Tahoe is warming.

Last month, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center released the Tahoe: State of the Lake Report, which included their finding of an average of 59.7 feet depth of water clarity for 2017, the lowest since they began taking measurements. In advance of the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summit, the following is from Darcie Goodman Collins, PhD, chief executive officer for the League to Save Lake Tahoe, on the findings:

In June, 2018, we found out the epic clarity of Lake Tahoe was measured at an average of 59.7 feet in 2017, a 9.5 foot drop from the previous year and 10.3 feet lower than the five-year average according to a report compiled by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) at the University of California, Davis.

This measurement surpassed the previous lowest level of 64.1 feet which was recorded in 1997, but far below the record high of over 100 feet in the mid-1960s.

The Tahoe Fund has launched a new website, Take Care Tahoe (www.takecaretahoe.org), to connect visitors and locals with all the events and volunteer opportunities that Tahoe has to offer in keeping Lake Tahoe and the surrounding lands pristine for generations to come.

"Time Travel: Revisiting Lake Tahoe," a visual presentation of historical photographs of Lake Tahoe with Dr. Peter Goin is the next UC Davis TERC (Tahoe Environmental Research Center) event in Incline Village.

Goin, , Foundation Professor of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno, has been working on the project for 25 years and he is presenting photos from the 19th century through the mid-twentieth century, with the photographer's comparative view of the same location.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded $25,003 towards programs in the local community that benefit youth during a luncheon on Wednesday, March 14.

The powerful images of climate change, the catastrophic scenes of ice shelves collapsing and the rare fresh water lake system they leave behind will be the focus of the next U.C. Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) presentation on November 9 in Incline Village.

Epishelf lakes, the rare lake system where freshwater overlies seawater, have been researched by Assistant Professor Dr. Alex Forrest and his team in the remote Canadian Arctic.

How does the 2017 yellow jacket population compare to previous years? Will a changing climate mean more regular population increases of these stinging things?

Join Dr. Lynn Kimsey, from the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology will speak at the next Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) talk in Incline Village on September 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Get an overview of yellow jacket diversity and biology and learn how to distinguish them from other wasps. Dr. Kimsey will also discuss effects and treatments of stings, and even more importantly, how to prevent or treat outbreaks.

Author David C. Antonucci will speak on his book Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 12, at 10:00 am.

In 1861, Samuel Clemens, the man who would become Mark Twain, hiked to Lake Tahoe to stake a claim for a timber ranch. He spent many blissful days on the Lake but carelessly allowed his campfire to escape, creating a spectacular wildfire. He later wrote about his experiences in his 1872 memoir, Roughing It.

Join U.C. Davis at their Incline Village Tahoe Environmental Research Center on Tuesday, June 27 and learn about how sharks sturgeon, trout and other species are tagged with acoustic transmitters for research.

Clarity levels at Lake Tahoe in 2016 increased in winter and decreased in summer in 2016 according to a report released on May 17 by researchers from University of California, Davis.

They said the summer values were due to the continuing effects of climate change and were so large that they outweighed the improving winter clarity which were at their highest since 2012.
