2014 – A Year of Success

To My Tahoe Neighbors,

As time goes by, and the older I get, it is truly rewarding to look back and reminisce over the many wonderful California Tahoe Conservancy projects that we have accomplished in Lake Tahoe.

I attribute our major successes to the outstanding Conservancy staff. Their knowledge, energy, and motivation make my tenure on this board very worthwhile.

I have always been very proud to say I am a member of the California Tahoe Conservancy. Although 29 years have come and gone, we still have a very bright future at Lake Tahoe.

Whittell High's Phil Bryant celebrates 705 coaching victories

It's not everyday that you see a high school coach reach the milestone of 700 coaching victories, but Whittell High School's Phil Bryant has done just that. The dual varsity basketball and football coach, Bryant led his basketball team to a win on December 11, making it the 700th time teams he was coaching had a victory.

Since that date, the Warriors have posted wins against Mammoth 72-44, Lee Vining 75-37, Loyalton 74-47, Pyramid Lake 50-46 and Coleville 73-22, bringing Bryant's victory count up to 705.

Kudos: LTVA & South Tahoe Refuse thank the community

Recently the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, in conjunction with South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling, conducted a “drive and drop” at the LTVA’s California Visitors Center, and curbside collection on regular pick-up days. Once again we were overwhelmed by the generous response from our South Lake Tahoe community. Together we collected over 1,500 pounds of food and toys to benefit Christmas Cheer all Year, plus over $1,200 in cash, $1,000 of which was donated by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe.

Kudos: Liberty Utilities employees give back during the holidays

You may recall that a month ago employees from Liberty Utilities donated cash and boxes and cans of food for the South Lake Tahoe backpack food program, Page and Sage. This generous donation allows the group to continue to feed the kids in need in our community.

Alpine Smith of South Lake Tahoe offers free snow removal to military families

South Lake Tahoe military families and wounded or disabled veterans can receive free snow and ice removal this winter from Alpine Smith, Inc.

In their fifth year of providing this service, Alpine Smith, Inc joins ranks with Project EverGreen's Snowcare for Troops program to help ease the burden on military families or disabled and wounded veterans needing assistance this winter.

South Tahoe High planning tribute to Dejon Smith on Thursday

The tributes and memories of Dejon Smith continue to pour in via Facebook and media outlets as well as through much desired hugs.

South Tahoe High had counselors on hand Monday during the school day, helping students deal with grief. The death of 14 year old freshman Dejon Smith has affected not only his friends and classmates but also unknown people around the country.

STHS: Counselors on hand to help students cope with Dejon Smith's death

The administration team at South Tahoe High School met this weekend to prepare for the return of students on Monday, the first day of school after the death of their classmate, freshman Dejon Smith.

Principal Chad Houck sent out a phone and email message Sunday evening to all parents to inform them of the plan for Monday.

3rd Annual Holiday Parade made its way through town

Everything from decorated cars full of STHS Cheerleaders to a tow truck and dump truck decked out in holiday cheer were part of the Third Annual Holiday Parade in South Lake Tahoe.

31 entries made up the parade which started at the top of Ski Run Blvd and went through town, ending in the parking lot of TJ Maxx.

"This was a really fun even for the whole community," said JoAnn Conner, organizer of the event (and City Councilwoman). "This parade raised a lot of money for Christmas Cheer as well as bringing in a lot of toys. Thank you to everyone who made all of this a success."

City provides snow removal do's and don'ts

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to thank locals and visitors for their contributions to efficient and effective snow removal. Our goal article is to familiarize those new to the area of “Snow Removal Do’s and Don’ts.” This might be old news to people who have lived in the Tahoe Basin for a while. However, for some visitors and new residents, this information could be beneficial when dealing with a Tahoe winter and snow removal.

Letter: I am thankful for the vote of confidence

To the community:

South Tahoe High sends out anti-bullying message through assembly and video

"This was the best school assembly ever," said a South Tahoe High Junior after hearing youth motivational speaker Mike Smith on campus Wednesday. "His message was amazing."

Smith spoke of how the words that you say can leave a mark on someone’s life forever. And if you’re a bully, that mark is a scar.

Thank you South Lake Tahoe

Happy Thanksgiving. You've no doubt heard or read these words a few times already today.

Thank you readers. You've made this year so special for me. When I started in July of 2013 I wasn't sure what was going to happen. Will people read what I spend hours on? Will they find it useful, helpful or thought provoking? Will they even find SouthTahoeNow.com? I appreciate each and every one of you and look forward to even bigger things in the next year.

Wendy David: Thank you for your support!

Dear South Lake Tahoe voters,

Quite simply, thank you for your support of my candidacy and election to your South Lake Tahoe City Council. I am humbled and honored by your support and will strive to represent you as residents and our City as a whole.

Thank you to all of the candidates that ran in this election. I learned so much from each of you. You have my respect and admiration as well.

Thank you letter from Lake Tahoe Community College

To The Community,

Thank you for your support of and confidence in the students, Board, faculty, staff, and leadership of Lake Tahoe Community College. We’d like to personally thank the South Lake Tahoe community for lending your support to Measure F, and for turning out this Election Day. This community’s four-decade-long involvement and interest in the college is what keeps LTCC going. You’ve supported your local community college, and we hope in the months and years to come, you’ll see firsthand the difference Measure F is making and will join us in celebrating its passage.

South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates thank the public

Dear Voters,

Today is the day you shape our City’s future. With your vote, choosing three members for our city council, you will speak on issues from economic development and the environment to jobs and the way we care for families and children. You have seven candidates to choose from, each proposing a path to move our City forward.

Letter: Please Vote Yes on H

As supervisor of Lake Valley’s wildfire prevention program for almost 10 years, I have witnessed a great change in our community’s awareness and understanding of our biggest hazard. However, I can honestly say that we have so much more work to do. For less than $10 a month, you can both safeguard our community and move our economy forward. Wildfire prevention is cheaper than suppression. Residents will continue to receive free curbside chipping. Local tree and roofing contractors will continue to benefit through rebates.

Letter: Measure F will create a terrific destination college

I have worked at Lake Tahoe Community College for over 21 years as a classified employee. In those years, I have seen a lot of changes – many good, some not. I wanted to address something that I haven't seen touched on yet regarding the college’s bond measure, and that is what happens at LTCC if Measure F does not pass.

Letter: Coyote soccer experience great for fans, players and coaches

"After a mistake late in the second half by our goalkeeper, the LTCC men's team found themselves down 2-0 with 6:46 seconds left to go in the game. Coyote players lay on the pitch with their hands over their faces in shock that we had let in a SECOND goal, and defeat seemed imminent.

And then something happened.

THE CROWD STARTED CHEERING!!!

I thought to myself on the sidelines, "Wow, that's a nice gesture since their team is being beat 2-0." Everyone on the bench and on the field thought the game was most likely over.

Mayor declares Public Employee Recognition Day

There has been a lot of anger and disappointment among the ranks of employees in the City of South Lake Tahoe over the last few years as they went through budget cuts, staff cuts, benefit cuts and a lack of raises.

"Our City Council is in a unique position," said Mayor Cole. "We understand the disappointment of our employees."

Opinion: Thousands of deadly weapons on the streets of South Lake Tahoe

There are several thousand deadly weapons on the streets of South Lake Tahoe every day.

This may seem like a drastic statement and I want to explain it. I'm not talking about guns or metal clubs, I'm talking about cars.

Have you ever waited at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra Blvd? How many times has someone rushed into the intersection against a red light as you were moving with your green light?

Kudos: Bijou Community School's NEW PLAYGROUND

The Bijou Community Playground represents a community effort and shows what we can do when we all come together and each do a little. Since 2007, with the inception of the Two Way Immersion program, and our forced volunteering program, the parents, staff and community members have consistently been spending time, funds, and those blood, sweat and tears we always talk about at this school. The new playground, as well as the field and park behind it, is a tangible representation of the volunteer force here at Bijou.

Police Chief’s Monthly Report to the Community

Marijuana is a major concern for many in our City. As part of the City Code, our City Council provided for a safer community by allowing marijuana grow operations only after a permit is obtained. The permit process provides for a building official to inspect for things like:

1. Safe wiring—adding large number of “grow lights” overburdens conventional electric outlets and can cause fires.

Many people know him as Arty the Party, others know him as Arthur Hervey while others will remember him as a local entertainer who has graced local stages with his piano and singing for years.

During April's South Lake Tahoe Drug Take Back Day, over 50 pounds of prescription drugs were dropped off anonymously in the bins location in the Safeway parking lot. This is about a 27% increase over last year's efforts.

Getting unused prescription drugs out of the home is a major step in accomplishing two major goals of Drug Take Back Day: Keeping drugs out of the landfills and water systems and keep drugs out of the hands of people who they weren't prescribed for.

Busy Beavers at Lake Tahoe's Taylor Creek

Lake Tahoe doesn't have Punxsutawney Phil but we do have busy beavers who have been entertaining those lucky enough to come across their paths. South Lake Tahoe local John McDougall has been visiting the Taylor Creek area over the last two weeks, observing the beavers and capturing their actions on film. Even though beavers are nocturnal, the ones captured here are busy on their dam building during daylight hours.
