SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Barton Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of Troy Matthews as its new Executive Director.

Matthews’ commitment to serving his community is exhibited through his involvement and leadership in multiple organizations including Tahoe Regional Young Professionals, the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, Progress for Tahoe, El Dorado County Housing Task Force, LTCC Theater Arts Task Force, Leadership Lake Tahoe, and serving on the Lake Tahoe Unified School District School Board.

Tahoe Arts Project bringing physical theater to the local stage

In their 31st year of bringing arts to the South Shore, Tahoe Arts Project starts their new season by presenting Push Physical Theater on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Harrah’s South Shore Room. Don’t miss your opportunity to see these five performers with their intense athleticism, gravity-defying acrobatics, and soulful artistry.

Local Children will be treated to performances by the genre-defining masters of physical storytelling during school assemblies during the week of October 3-6.

LTCC holds State of the College address

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is holding their State of the College address on Thursday, September 13 inside the Duke Theater starting at 8:00 a.m. with a breakfast reception.

LTCC President Jeff DeFranco will discuss where the college is today and where they are headed. A LTCC Alumni Panel will follow DeFranco, sharing their experiences on the South Lake Tahoe campus. Wrapping up the event will be Dr. Victor Rios, who will talk about how to change students' lives through meaningful contact.

Three concerts left for the season at Valhalla Boathouse Theatre

Multiple fires start as lightning storm passes through the Sierra and Carson City

There are several lightning caused fires currently burning in the Carson City/Carson Valley area of Nevada as well as ones at Genoa Peak and Duane Bliss Peak above Lake Tahoe.

A storm system is still in the area with multiple lightning strikes.

Shakespeare at Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor entertains with two plays

LAKE TAHOE - The summer of 2017 is the 45th anniversary of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor. If you have never been, this should be the year. Sit in the sand and enjoy not only great productions on the Warren Edward Trepp Stage at water's edge, but also an eclectic food and beverage area (or bring your own).

Two shows will be on the stage, alternating nights, Tuesday-Sunday through August 27.

Tahoe Children's Theater presents Beauty and the Beast

The Sierra Tahoe Children's Theater Company presents Beauty and the Junior Beast on Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1 at South Tahoe High.

60 local youth have been participating in an intensive theater workshop that taught them acting, singing, dancing, improvisation, auditioning and other theater skills.

The performances are under the direction of Liz Niven and Marcia Sarosik. Their non-profit company works with South Lake Tahoe young thespians every year to put on a performance. This year, every child that participated has a part in the musical.

Valhalla Renaissance Faire returns to South Lake Tahoe

After an absence in 2016 due to construction on the campgrounds at Camp Richardson, the 25th anniversary of the Valhalla Renaissance Faire returns to the South Shore for one weekend, June 10-11, 2017.

A weekend of Olde England style merriment and celebration will take place through seven acres of woods in the historic Camp Richardson, taking people back to Elizabethan times, complete with the "Queen" herself.

South Lake Tahoe teachers show support for free and quality education for all students

Members of the California Teacher's Association (CTA) and California Federation of Teachers (CFT) across the state brought out the posters and wore red on May 1 to advocate for public education and immigrant students.

South Lake Tahoe teachers joined in and greeted parents and students as they arrived for school Monday, displaying posters and letting students know they all had a right to quality and free public education, and asking all to take the pledge (as seen below).

Winners of TRPA Lake Spirit Awards announced

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) honored four people with Lake Spirit Awards Wednesday who have shown exceptional commitment to protecting Lake Tahoe and fostering a spirit of collaboration in their work and volunteer time.

This year’s award winners do everything from helping protect Lake Tahoe communities from wildfire and aquatic invasive species to promoting alternative transportation and sustainable lifestyles.

New South Lake Tahoe daycare center opens up for infants to age 13

Pequeños Rascals Daycare has moved into a new center in South Lake Tahoe after operating at a local home for 15 years. Filling a big need on the South Shore, the owners are offering quality care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children up to age 13.

It's not just babysitting either. It's care with a heavy emphasis on education, music, art, physical activity and family.

2017 Miss Carson City and Miss Douglas County crowned

A year can pass very quickly. Just ask Samantha Byassee and Karrina Ferris, who were crowned Miss Carson City and Miss Carson City Outstanding Teen, respectively, in 2016.

One year later, the two reigning local titleholders in the Miss America organization turned their crowns over to the 2017 winners Saturday night on stage in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

"Savor every moment, because a year will go by so fast," Ferris said in her farewell speech to the waiting contestants.

Auditions at LTCC for quirky comedy Love/Sick

LTCC Rock Ensemble to "Rock Out For Cancer" at fundraiser

A special benefit concert is being held at the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Duke Theater on Wednesday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. to raise money to help a local woman battling aggressive brain cancer.

Students in the school's Rock Ensemble classes will hit the stage for an evening of classic rock n’ roll hits, some gospel, some country, and a little bit of heavy metal to raise funds for the Angie Peart Cancer Fund.

Angie Peart, who herself is a rock student herself, is the wife of the LTCC reprographics/phone operator Bob Peart. She has been battling brain cancer since 2015.

South Tahoe High to present new stage version of White Christmas

A new stage version of White Christmas is on Broadway and touring the country this season, and now the South Lake Tahoe community will be able to see the numbers as the student of South Tahoe High present the play December 8-10 and 16-18.

The updated version of the Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye classic includes old favorite numbers, as well as delightful new ones.

It is sure to put everyone in a “Happy Holiday” mood.

Passionate community meeting about future of LTCC Theatre Arts program

A passionate crowd of about 90 people attended the first of at least two public meetings on the future of the Theatre Arts program at Lake Tahoe Community College Tuesday evening.

The one thing everyone could agree on is the importance of having live theatre in South Lake Tahoe, but how that theatre and the program supporting it will look in the future is uncertain. Will it be a community based theatre, or will it continue to be a college run program?

Tahoe Youth & Family Services "Night of Magic"

Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) is holding their inaugural Night of Magic on Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Loft at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. This unique fundraiser will start off with wine and appetizers, and attendees will be able to visit with staff to learn more about their programs. Then, starting at 9:00 p.m., the party moves into the intimate theater for a special Magic Fusion show.

Tickets are $60 per person and all proceeds will go to fund needed programs in the community that serve youth and families.

Theater program at LTCC may be discontinued; Room being made for community theater model

With three productions a year, and just seven degrees issued in five years, Lake Tahoe Community College is looking at eliminating their theater program and moving toward a community theater model.

Theater staff at the college were advised on Tuesday that LTCC administration is recommending to the Board of Trustees that they’re recommending discontinuing the theater program.

Over the past 1.5 years, administrators have been going through a process that included research on program vitality at the college.

Missoula Children's Theater returns to South Lake Tahoe for 30th season

Tahoe Arts Project is welcoming back Missoula Children's Theater for the 30th time in South Lake Tahoe. This year they will be presenting "Rumpelstiltskin."

There are over 60 roles for local youth ages 5-17 who are already in school. For those unfamiliar with the production, the theater group comes to town on a Monday for auditions, holds rehearsals Tuesday through Friday, then have two performances on Saturday.

Chautauqua performers Dana Blane, Larry Lippmann and Mike Trute will portray local historical figures Donner Party survivor “Patty Reed”, Stagecoach driver “Hank Monk” and U.S. Marshall “Warren Wasson” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 pm.

Patty Reed was 8 years old when her family joined the movement west to settle in California. As survivors of the ill-fated 1846 Donner Party, the tremendous hardships they endured left the family destitute. The little doll Patty hid in her clothing survives until this day.
