Eric Michael Berg tragically and unexpectedly passed on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at the age of 32. The severity and duration of his addiction to alcohol was almost entirely hidden from his friends and family. He passed just hours before family intended to bring him to a medical detoxification facility.

Mardy Fish carries Saturday momentum into final round at Edgewood for the Win

Springboarding off a course-record 63 during day two on Saturday, former American professional tennis star Mardy Fish captured victory in the 31st American Century Championship tournament victory Sunday afternoon at Edgewood Tahoe South Golf Course.

This year’s event is being played without fans at the Edgewood Course due to the coronavirus pandemic, creating a unique experience for players in the popular celebrity tournament that typically attracts large galleries.

Fish a splash at American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Mardy Fish won the 31st American Century Championship (ACC) at Edgewood Tahoe on Sunday with a three-round total of 76 in the Stableford scoring system used at the popular celebrity golf tournament.

Fish followed up his record round on Saturday with a rather ordinary 21-point effort Sunday, but it was enough to claim his first title at Tahoe. He's had five top-five finishes at Edgewood in six previous appearances in the ACC.

Steph Curry honoring Black Lives Matter with his custom shoes at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - If you've been able to catch the coverage of the 31st American Century Championship from Lake Tahoe you may have seen the shoes Steph Curry has been wearing.

On Friday, his shoes showed an image of Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old African-American emergency medical technician who was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers on March 13, 2020.

Curry, who has been outspoken and active with social injustice matters, said the shoes were to "shine a light on Breonna Taylor, demanding and praying and
wishing for justice for her and her family."

Combat Hero Bike Build to honor South Lake Tahoe veteran

Richard "Jay" Thoma of South Lake Tahoe will be presented a custom bike in Carson City on Saturday as part of the Combat Hero Bike Build giveaway.

Thoma, who has lived on the South Shore since 1989, lost his leg in an accident on an aircraft carrier in the Philippines in 1973 at the age of 18. Since then he has been walking with a prosthetic leg but never gave up the love of riding motorcycles.

Fan life at the 2019 American Century Championship

A bit of magic took place on the 17th hole this weekend at Edgewood Tahoe golf course when Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry asked a young fan dressed in all-Warriors gear to join him on the green. Tyler Golla from Sparks ran on to the course to meet his favorite idol.

Security followed closely behind as Curry made Golla, 15, comfortable by letting him take part in an improvised hoops shoot-out in front of hundreds of fans – and with Justin Timberlake joining the competition. As Golla shot the ball, Curry and Timberlake signed his Warriors hat.

Tony Romo stays on top of the leaderboard at American Century Golf in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. = Former Dallas Cowboy's quarterback Tony Romo is one round of golf away from being the back-to-back champion at the 30th annual American Century Golf Championship.

He shot a 70 on each of the first two days of the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe, but the tournament uses Modified Stableford scoring, given Romo at 51.

Korbel's two fun events at the ACC: The Spray-Off and Closest-to-the-Pine constests

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) has been chosen as the charity that could win $125,000 during this year's Korbel Closest-to-the-Pin challenge during the American Century Championship on Friday. A total of $250,000 is on the line during this annual contest that brings together 15 of the tournament’s most popular personalities to compete. If a contestant makes a hole-in-one, the $250,000 grand prize will be split with $125,000 going home with the celebrity, and $125,000 to TPC.

Thursday pairings for the American Century Celebrity-Am tournament

The crowds were starting to grow over at Edgewood on Wednesday. More celebrities arrived and the golf range and putting green were filling up as the 91 players in the tournament started to warm up in preparation for the Fri-Sun American Century Championship.

The popular celebrity golf tournament will be held July 9-14 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Curry, the Golden State Warriors two-time NBA Most Valuable Player is a contender in the tournament. He is considered among the favorites. Harrah’s and Harveys Race and Sportsbook have installed him at 15-1 odds along with San Jose Sharks captain Joe Pavelski and former Sharks star Jeremy Roenick.

Those who sacrificed their lives honored in South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow and rain turned to sunshine as over 100 people honored those who died for their country during the annual American Legion Post 795 Memorial Day ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Knowing people are "Tahoe Tough" the Legion decided to keep their plans on having the event outdoors, and their prayers were answered when the sun came through and shone on the attendees, speakers, and singers.

South Lake Tahoe honors veterans at American Legion ceremony

Each of us is better today thanks to a veteran. These were the opening words of the annual Veterans Day observance at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday.

"Today we honor all veterans as we do in times of peace and in times of war," said Mayor Wendy David. "Sadly the Great War wasn't the war to end all wars.

STATELINE, Nev. – For the second consecutive year a Curry lost a bet and went swimming in Lake Tahoe after the American Century Championship.

But this time is wasn't Dell Curry.

Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry enjoyed it in 2017 when his dad, former NBA player Dell Curry, jumped into Lake Tahoe after losing a head-to-head bet in the tournament.

This year, it was dad Dell who got the last laugh.

Tony Romo wins the 29th annual American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - It was a come from behind victory for Tony Romo Sunday, something he was familiar with during his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He was four points back during the final round, jumping ahead of the defending champ, three-time winner Mark Mulder and the leader from the first two rounds, Joe Pavelski.

“It’s a special win,” said Romo, who had finished second three times in seven previous trips to the annual celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. “It feels like you’re playing a tournament back home here. The day felt good for a lot of reasons.”

Trevor Hoffman joins elite field in Hall of Fame and at American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Trevor Hoffman, the long time relief pitcher for the San Diego Padres and newly elected Hall of Famer, stopped by the South Shore Tuesday to promote the 29th American Century Championship (ACC) at Edgewood Tahoe July 10-15.

"The course is amazing," said Hoffman. "I can't believe its [the tournament] only a month away!"

Hoffman, who has more strike-outs than any other reliever in history (1,133) and a lifetime ERA of 2.87, attended a luncheon at Edgewood Tahoe with members of the media to discuss the upcoming celebrity packed tournament, baseball and golf.

Dave McClure 1950~2018

David Alan McClure passed away from multiple organ failure at Renown Hospital on February 24, 2018.

He was the first born child of Charles and Florence Engstrom McClure in Martinez, Calif., on October 7, 1050. Soon after, they moved to San Francisco, they lived in the student housing quonset huts while Charles got his teaching degree. Four years later they moved to San Anselmo, in Marin County, where the family lived in an Asian pagoda style home until 2016.

Crowd turns out for South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Ceremony

"I'm so proud of our community and this great turnout," said South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Tom Davis during Monday's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

A larger crowd than normal watched the ceremony which featured boys and girl scouts, music and speakers that included Gold Star Mom Patty Smith. Her son, Sgt. Timothy Michael Smith, was one of three South Lake Tahoe men to die in action since the September 11 attacks in 2001. Smith, 25, who died April 7, 2008, after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

Hundreds run into Lake Tahoe for annual Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge

Individuals and teams from Carson City, Northern Nevada and Northern California took an icy cold dip into Lake Tahoe Saturday for the annual Special Olympics Polar Plunge, raising around $150,000 for the program's many functions.

The event at Zephyr Cove Resort featured more than 400 water warriors, many who dressed up in costumes for the event. Participants either ran, walked or swam in the 38-degree lake, which has experienced a rapid rise in its shoreline due to heavy snowfall this winter.

Tahoe for Standing Rock holding benefit concert

Lake Tahoe area supporters of those protesting the pipeline in Standing Rock, ND will be holding a benefit concert at the Tahoe Biltmore on the North Shore on Saturday, December 3 starting at 1:00 p.m.

The family friendly event will feature musicians along with members of local Native American tribes. Also on tap is a arts and crafts area with face painting, raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $20 for adults (12 and under are free) and available by clicking HERE.

The 38th Annual Freaker's Ball, Lake Tahoe’s largest, oldest and most extravagant Halloween party, brings the wild with a four-ring costume circus in the Convention Center, Opal Ultra Lounge and Blu Nightclub venues at MontBleu on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. Cost is $35 prior to Saturday, then $40 at the door if tickets are available. Costume contest with prizes.

On Friday, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino holds the 2nd Annual Rockin’ Dead Halloween Bash inside Vinyl starting at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $25. Costume contest with prizes.

Prep round-up for the South Shore: Whittell and South Tahoe Highs

The South Tahoe High boy's tennis team continues to dominate Northern Nevada action on the courts and are now preparing to take their 12-0 record to the Nevada state tournament which begins in two weeks. In the meantime, players head to the regional playoffs.

South Tahoe High's varsity football team is now in a three-way tie for second place in Northern Nevada 3A with their 6-1 record. They blanked Dayton during Friday's homecoming game at South Tahoe, 57-0.

Celebrity Golf: Thursday pairings, Rotary breakfast and Korbel media spray-off

For the third year, celebrities playing in the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe had breakfast with the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club. This year, former major league pitchers Mark Mulder and Derek Lowe joined the group at the Hard Rock Cafe for two hours of candid discussions, fun and community.

Over on hole 17 Wednesday, former Tahoe Douglas Rotary President Todd Poth won the Korbel Media Spray Off.

Steph Curry headed to South Lake Tahoe for American Century Golf

Two time MVP of the NBA, Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors is headed to the South Shore to play in the 27th annual American Century Golf Championship July 22-24.

Last year, Curry had to pass because of the birth of his second child Ryan. This year, he was due to play for the USA in the Olympic Games, but with an injured right knee he has decided to stay home, and opened the doors to play in Tahoe.

Whittell and South Tahoe softball and baseball post season update

South Tahoe's girls softball team started off their Northern Nevada NIAA Division 1-A playoff season right, with a Thursday morning win over Elko, 8-1, but things didn't go the Viking's way after that. In Thursday afternoon's game against #1 seed Churchill County, the SLT girls lost a nail-biter, 1-0. During Friday's third round, South Tahoe High was matched up against Spring Creek, the host of the tournament. The home field advantage led them to a 8-6 win over STHS.

South Tahoe and Whittell High softball and baseball teams headed to playoffs

Seasons are wrapping up for local high school baseball and softball teams, and that means playoffs. Both boys and girls baseball and softball teams from South Tahoe High and Whittell High are headed into Northern playoffs

The South Tahoe baseball team is traveling to the other side of the state for their first round match up against the #3 seed team from Elko. Their May 13 game at Spring Creek High School against Elko starts at 10:30 a.m. The winner of that game meets Fernley at 3:30 p.m. with the championship game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

90 players committed to playing in Celebrity Golf Championship

Charles Barkley, Justin Timberlake, and Steve Kerr and Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors lead a group of 90 sports and entertainment stars coming to South Lake Tahoe for the 27th annual American Century Championship, July 19 – 24, 2016. Many were hoping to see Steph Curry on the list, but with the Olympic Games in Rio just after the tournament, speculation is that he had to skip the stop in Tahoe.

Whittell Warriors crowned state champs after 53-48 win at Lawlor

For the second time in three years, the Whittell High School boys basketball team has won the Nevada state championship.

The win was the Warriors 25th consecutive win. They wrapped up their 2016 season with an overall record of 27-2.

On Saturday at Lawlor Event Center at the University of Nevada Reno, Whittell beat Word of Life Christian Academy out of Las Vegas, 53-48, earning them the NIAA Division IV crown.

South Tahoe and Whittell High basketball teams play in state tournament Friday

The basketball teams from both South Shore high schools are playing in the first round of the NIAA State Basketball Championship, with their first round games Friday.

Whittell Warriors are taking on the Adelson Lions in their Division IV game at 3:00 p.m. at Reed High School in Reno with the South Tahoe Vikings playing the Desert Pines Jaguars at 4:40 p.m. at Reno High. The Vikings play in NIAA Division I-A.

Whittell High's basketball team wins Northern Nevada Division IV title

Whittell High School is heading to the Nevada state championships next week as the #1 seed from the north after taking care of Mineral County, winning 60-44.

The Warriors trip to the Northern Nevada Division IV title began with a 14-0 regular season record. In round one of the tournament they beat Jackpot 69-36, followed by a semifinal Whittell victory over Pyramid Lake 60-49.

South Lake Tahoe sports roundup: On the snow and on the court

South Tahoe High and Whittell High athletes have seen wins this week, both on the court and on the slopes and South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman is at Mammoth Mountain today for the first stop for the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup 2016.

South Tahoe High's varsity basketball teams won Wednesday night in Sparks. The boys beat the Railroaders 77-63 while the girls handled their opponent, winning the game by a score of 54-34.

Whittell football wraps up season as #2 in Nevada

Dayton was the scene of the NIAA Division IV State Football Championships between Whittell High School, number one team from the north, against the south's best, Pahranagat Valley.

Whittell had dominated the north all season, taking an 11-0 record into the final game of the year. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Pahranagat Valley won the game 54-28.

Pahranagat Valley's 93 game winning streak is now the best in the country for 8-man teams.

Both teams were undefeated during the regular season.

Whittell High's football team continues to roll towards state title

The undefeated Whittell Warriors football team won Friday's playoff game against Spring Mountain by a score of 48-26, earning them a spot in the Nevada State Championship game November 21. Whittell last won a state title in 1988.

Whittell took a commanding 34-18 into the locker room at half-time and never looked back.

They will meet Pahranagat Valley who beat Virginia City by a score of 76-32 Friday night. Both Whittell and Pahranagat Valley are 11-0 on the season. Pahranagat has won 92 games in a row so it should be a great game.

Whittell High's football team prepares for state semifinals

The Whittell Warriors are continuing on their road to the Nevada state title after beating Carlin High last week, 36-20. Whittell hosts the semifinals on Friday, November 13 when they play the Spring Mountain Eagles in a 6 p.m. game.

The Las Vegas team beat Tonopah in the first round by a score of 72-14. They are the #2 seed from the south coming into the game.

The #1 seed from the north, Whittell, spent the holiday shoveling and snowblowing off the football field in preparation for the game.

Whittell's football team 10-0 on year, beats Carlin to move to next round

The Whittell Warriors are entering next week's Nevada State Championship semi-finals as the number one seed after their 20-14 win Friday night over Virginia City.

This was the Warrior's first post-season home game since 1991. They get to do it again on Friday, November 13 when they host Spring Mountain, the number 2 seed from the South. Game time is 5 p.m.

Virginia City will play Pahranagat Valley on Friday as well. Their 7 p.m. game will be played at Alamo, Southern Nevada.

Whittell girls go for repeat of NIAA Division III Nevada State High School Championship

The Whittell Warriors girls soccer team won Friday's first round game against Incline, getting them just one step away from repeating as State Champs for Division III.

The girls beat Incline, the host of the tournament, by a score of 3-2.

North Tahoe beat their first round opponent, White Pine, 3-0, setting up the state tournament game between the Tahoe Basin's North and South. The game will be played Saturday, November 7 at 11 a.m. at Incline High School.

The road to playoffs for Whittell High School teams

The football team as well as girls' soccer and boys' cross country teams from Whittell High School all continue their seasons as State Tournaments approach.

Cole Snyder, a Whittell High School junior, is heading to State after coming in fourth at Saturday's NIAA Northern Region Division III/IV Championships at Rancho San Rafael in Reno. His time of 18:35 put him into the top 5 which earns him a spot at the November

Freshman runners Sam Rusk and Jacob Otterstrom placed 43rd and 47th respectively. Rusk had a time of 26:00 and Otterstrom had 28:13.

Whittell's football team remains undefeated as they head into playoffs

Much as they've done all season long, the Whittell High School's football time crushed Smith Valley Thursday night, 70-8, on their home turf.

The Warriors scored 42 points in the first quarter, followed by 28 more points before Smith Valley was able to put points on the board.

Whittell wrapped up their season 9-0 overall, 7-0 in league action.

The Nevada State Baseball Championship title is staying in Northern Nevada, but not with the Whittell Warriors.

Defending their 2014 state title, Whittell went up against Virginia City Saturday morning at Durango High School in Las Vegas.

The 26-9 Warriors lost to the 21-3 Muckers by a score of 14-3.

Whittell's baseball team one step closer to repeat as state champs

The Whittell Warriors baseball team entered the state tournament as the defending championships, and today they are one step closer to repeating for Division IV teams.

They lost their first round game on Thursday against the number one seed from the south, Pahranagat Valley, 12-2. They then went on to beat Tonopah in the loser's bracket by a score of 7-6 on Friday which saw them meet up Pahranagat Valley once again.

Whittell won the game, 4-2.

In the meantime, Virginia City, the number one seed from the north, beat Tonopah 9-5 and Pahranagat Valley 6-1.

Whittell Warriors earn Nevada state baseball tournament spot

Whittell High School's varsity baseball team will be defending their 2014 Nevada State Title this week as they head to the 2015 NIAA Division IV Tournament in Las Vegas.

The Warriors went 2-1 this weekend's Northern Nevada playoffs, getting wins over Wells and Mineral County.

The boys from the South Shore will enter the State Tournament as the number two seed from the north. Virginia City is number one.

The Whittell High School varsity baseball team is trying to extend their record to 14-0 Wednesday afternoon as they host Coleville at the Warrior's field in a 2 p.m. match-up.

On Tuesday, the boys in red beat Sierra Lutheran by a score of 12-1 which came on the heels of their double header win over Eureka on March 28 where they beat Vandals 11-1 and 15-7.

Whittell falls short of another Nevada State basketball title

The Whittell High School's boys varsity basketball team made another trip to the NIAA Division IV State Basketball Championships over the weekend, trying to replicate last year's championship. They took their 15-1 league record to The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for the final games of the season.

On Friday, the boys played Spring Mountain from the southern division. Despite 26 points from junior Palmer Chaplin and 17 by Quinn Kixmiller, the Whittell Warriors lost to Spring Mountain, 69-54.

Whittell wins again; Headed to State Basketball Tournament

Two teams that have been neck and neck in the NIAA Northern Division IV standings all season are both headed to the Nevada State tournament.

Whittell Warriors who have just one loss in the regular season, to Virginia City, will meet their nemisis on Saturday for the Northern Nevada Region title. The Virginia City uckers, who's only loss in the regular season was to Whittell, aims to dethrone the defending state champion Warriors.

The two teams meet at 1:30 p.m. in Spring Creek, NV where the Northern Region tournament has been held since Thursday.

Whittell boys beat Owyhee 71-27 in NIAA Div IV basketball quarterfinals

Defending Nevada State Division IV basketball champs Whittell High School are the top seed for the West in the Northern Region tournment which started Thursday at Spring Creek High School.

The Warriors beat Owyhee High School in the first round, 71-27. They will meet the McDermitt Bulldogs in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. McDermitt is the #2 seed for the East in post season regional action.

In the other quarterfinal game, Eureka will play Virginia City at 8 p.m.
