SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A pro-choice protest will be held at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 27 at 4 p.m.
This locally-planned event is the second one organizers have done since the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. This is also a fundraiser, with funds going to the Wild West Access Fund of Nevada. This fund was newly formed with the belief everyone should have the final say in their own reproductive decisions.
Over $1,300 was raised during the June protest between a GoFundMe campaign and cash donations taken in during the day.
Unhealthy air in South Lake Tahoe as Oak Fire grows to14,281 acres
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/24/2022 - 2:15pmThe Oak Fire burning in Mariposa County has now consumed 14,281 acres in less than 48 hours.
The fire remained active through the night moving toward the communities of Jerseydale, Darrah, and Bootjack. Poor humidity recovery was observed overnight. On Sunday the weather is expected to remain hot with minimum humidity between 5 and 10 percent, which will hamper firefighting efforts. High tree mortality and dense fuels are throughout the fire area.
Fire evacuation and advisories remain in effect. Damage inspection teams are beginning their assessment of the areas affected by the fire.
Raging Oak Fire now 15,603 acres, 0% containment

During a packed community meeting tonight in Mariposa, fire officials said that, even though the containment line is at zero, they have been able to stop the spread of fire to the south. The active areas are to the north and the northeast, into the Sierra. There are a couple of fire scars in its current path that won't stop the fire but could slow it and let them get resources into the area.

Two men cited for camping, starting cooking fire in woods behind South Shore casinos
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/22/2022 - 9:31pmSTATELINE, Nev. - Two deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the report of a wildland fire in the woods behind Bally's casino at Stateline on July 21 at approximately 8:25 a.m.
The deputies could see smoke coming from the woods just east of Lake Parkway. They walked in about 50 meters and saw signs of a transient camp with garbage, toilet paper, and debris scattered around the area. They found two men who were cooking breakfast over a fire pit dug into the dirt, and it was not a wildland fire.
Another fire near Yosemite: Oak Fire quickly spreading near town of Mariposa

Emergency personnel are working to safely evacuate people and are actively engaged in protecting structures. Explosive fire behavior is challenging for firefighters.
MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. - At 2 p.m. on Friday, July 22, a fire was spotted near the town of Midpines, north of Mariposa on Hwy 140 and Carstens Rd. It quickly spread and was last measured at 1,600 acres on CalFIRE's website, though fire mapping is reported at 4,350 acres.

Green enters "no contest" plea to 2nd degree murder for 1985 stabbing of El Dorado Hills woman
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/22/2022 - 11:46amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Michael Green appeared in Judge Suzanne Kingbury's South Lake Tahoe courtroom on Friday and entered a plea of "no contest" in the July 7, 1985 murder of Jane Hylton.
Michael Green, who is now 54, was 17 years old at the time of Hylton's murder.
The case attracted national attention after the original man convicted of the murder in 2005, Ricky Davis, had been found guilty and sent to prison. Long professing his innocence, DNA cleared him of the murder in 2020.
Free on-demand transportation service launches in South Lake Tahoe

It will provide free on-demand transportation with a fleet of vans operating from Al Tahoe Blvd. through the Stateline corridor.
Lake Link will operate 365 days per year, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays in summer and winter.
Power outage affecting over 4,500 South Lake Tahoe customers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting a power outage in South Lake Tahoe this evening, affecting 4,525 customers. The lines are currently de-engergized and the expected restoral time is 11:25 p.m.
The cause of the outage is unknown at this time.
Volunteer opportunities to water sugar pine seedlings at Lake Tahoe

The heat of July and August are very important times to water to ensure the seedlings can live.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two all-comers, all ages, track meets are coming to South Lake Tahoe, one on Thursday, July 28, and the other on Thursday, August 11. They will take place on the South Tahoe Middle School Track.
Registration on both dates begins at 4 p.m., with the meet starting promptly at 5 p.m. The lead official for the meets is Austin Angell. There is no fee to participate! Parking is available at the middle school.
Scheduled events include the 50m, 100m, 200m 400m, 800m, and 1600m as well as the long jump.

First responders busy with two emergencies in Douglas County, one on lake, one on the road

A family friend told South Tahoe Now they are checking for hypothermia but appears to be okay otherwise. He was wearing a life jacket.
ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - There was a two-vehicle collision on US50 near the entrance to Round Hill Pines Resort Wednesday evening, resulting in one person being ejected from their vehicle. They are being transported via Care Flight to Renown in Reno. A second person is on their way to Barton in an ambulance.
Two Gardnerville men arrested on drug and weapons charges
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2022 - 4:47pmMinden, NV - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) conducted a search of a home in Gardnerville on July 19, finding inside suspected drugs, weapons and drug paraphernalia.
At approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday, DCSO deputies executed a search warrant at 1392 Highway 395. The warrant was the result of information learned the previous day when patrol deputies responded to the same home for a medical call. While there they observed drug paraphernalia along with obvious children’s toys throughout the house.

Reno man arrested after allegedly stealing vehicle and bringing to South Lake Tahoe

At noon on July 20, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received word that a 2012 Subaru had been stolen in Reno and was in the area of Takela Drive. The owner of the vehicle had it on a used car lot but was alerted the car was gone so utilized its GPS tracking system.
Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team urges residents to create defensible space with some tree removal

Fire agencies, TRPA, and other water quality agencies are in agreement on all defensible space requirements and have developed simple tree removal guidelines to aid property owners in protecting homes and neighborhoods.
Motorcyclist dies in Wednesday morning collision in South Lake Tahoe

Charles Idell, of South Lake Tahoe, was northbound on his 2007 Yamaha on Black Bart Avenue at 6:48 a.m. when he collided with a vehicle pulling out from Hank Monk Avenue, making a left-hand turn onto Black Bart. The collision is under investigation.

Nevada State Parks makes call for Recreational Trails Program Project pre-applications

Heavenly North Bowl Chair auction raises $162,000 for South Lake Tahoe donations

With those funds, Heavenly has donated $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, and an additional $50,000 to Ski Run Park. The remaining $62,000 will go towards the EpicPromise foundation which supports community grants and our employees in times of need.
Biden-Harris administration announces $3.4 Million for Lake Tahoe Basin to address aquatic invasive species

Tahoe National Forest to implement Stage 1 fire restrictions July 20

Under these restrictions, the public can still build or maintain a fire, campfire, or charcoal briquette fire in established fire rings within designated developed campgrounds and day-use sites, but not outside of those areas. Campfires will not be allowed at all Tahoe National Forest recreation sites—a list of designated developed recreation areas is linked below.

No harmful algal blooms at Lake Tahoe but public should be aware
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/18/2022 - 11:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While there may be algae "caution" signs at two South Lake Tahoe beaches, the Lahontan Water Board says they are only to bring awareness and no harmful algae blooms (HABs) have been detected there, or at any water area in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Kiva Beach and Connelly Beach both have the signage, and there is some visual appearance of algae blooms in those areas, so Lahontan posts the signs due to the high level of recreation that occurs at these beaches.
One injured after rollover crash near Zephyr Cove
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/18/2022 - 9:00pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division were kept busy this past weekend with crashes around Lake Tahoe.
On Saturday, July 16, troopers were called to US50 between Skyland and Zephyr Cove at approximately 2:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a brown Jeep had sideswiped three parked cars and then rolled over.
The driver was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
US50 was closed as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

A 53-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after trying to escape from a South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) officer as they attempted to pull him over for a stop sign violation.
Genoa man drowns in Lake Tahoe at Marla Bay

He had fallen overboard while he was attempting to tie his boat onto a mooring ball in Marla Bay in Lake Tahoe.

Between April 1 and June 30 this year, the average wind speed at the Tahoe Valley Airport has been 7.60 miles per hour (factoring in 24 hours a day and non-wind days). This is the highest average for this period since 2000 when that average was 8.30 miles per hour.

Signups this week for the Tahoe Grizzlies 2022-23 hockey season

Registration for the 2022 / 2023 Youth Hockey is now open.

Public comment period on proposed Eldorado National Forest Roadside Hazard Tree Mitigation Project
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/17/2022 - 7:36pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service is seeking public comments on the proposed Eldorado National Forest Roadside Hazard Tree Mitigation Project. This project involves felling and removal of hazard trees for public health and safety within 200 feet of roads in the Placerville, Georgetown, Amador, and Pacific Ranger Districts. Project implementation may start as early as the spring of 2023.
Filing period opens Monday for city council, college and school boards and more

The closing date is August 12 at 5 p.m. unless an incumbent does not file for reelection, then the filing period is extended five days, to August 17 at 5 p.m.
Roadwork updates for NDOT projects on SR28 and SR431
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/17/2022 - 6:19pmWork continues on the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) projects at Lake Tahoe on SR-28 and SR-431. Drivers can expect up to 30-minute delay times. All work is weather and temperature permitting, and subject to change.
MARLETTE CREEK (SR-28):
Beginning Monday, July 18 working hours are Monday – Fridays, daytime only, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (to noon on Fridays).
Traffic will be reduced to a single lane and controlled by flaggers. Anticipate completion of this work by the end of July.
MT. ROSE HIGHWAY (SR-431):
South Lake Tahoe forecast: A windy start to a week in the 80s

They are expected east of Lake Tahoe, north of I-80, and south of US-50. Expect typical driven winds each day with westerly zephyr breezes during the afternoon/evening. For temperatures, they`ll remain right around where we`d expect them to be this time of year.
The South Lake Tahoe forecast from National Weather Service in Reno:
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 85. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
