No One Fights Alone fundraiser for local woman battling cancer

South Shore resident Rosie Parker is fighting esophageal cancer, and a Lake Tahoe benefit concert is being held to help her and her family with growing expenses on Friday, October 21 from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at Cold Water Brewery.

“We are showing our love, we are showing our support for Rose,” said Cold Water owner Debbie Brown, “Our brewmaster’s wife was diagnosed with esophageal cancer back in August, and she is fighting the fight of her life.”

Ted Kennedy continues to show his appreciation for local heroes through his South Lake Tahoe restaurants.

Kennedy, who on the ownership team of Base Camp Pizza, California Burger, Azul Latin Kitchen and now, the Lakeside Beach House, shows gratitude on a weekly basis. Those in uniform and teachers get a free meal at any of his four restaurants (police officers, sheriff's deputies, fire personnel, nurses and those on active duty).

"This is to thank them, and show that we appreciate their service," said Kennedy. "They are our local heroes."

A year after opening his successful Sno Frozen Yogurt Cafe in the Chateau at the Village, Theron Baker joined family member and opened "Dough" right next door.

"Fast casual pizza is picking up across the country," said Baker. "I thought it'd be a good idea here."

Dough just opened on Saturday, February 13 and they've been hopping sever ince.

"The best thing about our pizza is that you don't have to share," added Baker.

'Pizza for Pups' fundraiser tonight in South Lake Tahoe

The Animal Coalition of Tahoe (ACT) is holding a fundraiser in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, January 27 to raise money for their spay-neuter program and the animal shelter in Meyers.

Pizza for Pups will be held at Blue Dog Pizza (Midtown location on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Sierra Blvd). For a $10 donation, participants will enjoy Blue Dog's wonderful pizza with the proceeds going to ACT. The rest of Blue Dog's menu will be available for purchase, also, including salads, beer, and wine. Seatings will be at 6:00 p.m and 7:00 p.m.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is updating their website and they are looking for volunteers to help them accomplish this feat.

New on the South Shore: Neighborhood Burgers opens on Kingsbury

A new burger place has opened on the South Shore, giving residents on the Nevada side of town a new option for eating out (or on the run).

Neighborhood Burgers was opened by locals Erik Watada and Matt Grime, and in less than a week of being open its already a hit.

Grime, owner of The Fox & Hound at the top of Kingsbury, joined Watada in providing an option for people to get a quick bite, especially those on the Nevada side where options are at a minimum.

Man jailed in South Lake Tahoe last year arrested in SF for alleged child abduction

A man arrested in South Lake Tahoe one year ago has been charged in last week's attempted kidnapping of a toddler who was riding on a MUNI bus in San Francisco with his mother.

On November 17, 2015, 45-year-old Sudesh Singh allegedly grabbed the one-year-old boy as his mother was waiting on a bus for a transfer slip. Singh ran onto the bus and took the child, put him into his arms and ran away, according to officials.

The mother chased after them and freed the screaming toddler from Singh, who was a stranger to both of them, police said.

13th annual Treat Street moves to Lake Tahoe Community College

Trick or Treat in a safe, fun environment at the 13th annual Treat Street on Saturday, October 31 at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Local businesses and non-profits will be there to hand out candy to children in a safe, controlled environment.

Thousands of children have attended in the past, decked out as superheroes, princesses, magicians and monsters.

Volunteers will be passing out candy, serving hot cocoa, pizza, cotton candy, popcorn and s'mores in and around the haunted house.

The end for long time businesses: Sam's Place closes, Cork & More to follow

Sam's Place Bar & Grill and the Cork & More, two iconic South Lake Tahoe businesses, surprised many with their news this week that they are ending their multi-decade runs on the South Shore.

For many, Sam's Place was where they went after work for pizza and a beer after work. Others enjoyed the pool, outdoor patio, sports on their televisions, slot machines or the camaraderie that comes with a neighborhood bar.

Texas songstress Mandy Rowden announces free Lake Tahoe shows

Celebrated Americana singer-songwriter, Mandy Rowden, is headed to South Lake Tahoe this month for two free shows promoting her new record 'These Bad Habits.'

She will be at BaseCamp Pizza on October 20 at 5 p.m and at the Eagle's Next on October 22 at 7 p.m.

For the album, Rowden called upon the legendary talent of fellow Texans: Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks), Redd Volkaert (Merle Haggard), and Brad Rice (Ryan Adams). Following her highly successful spring tour, Rowden was invited back out west for a handful of special performances.

Yelpers from across the West will meet in South Lake Tahoe this weekend to enjoy a full schedule of events highlighting what the community has to offer to visitors.

From October 1 to 4, 2015, Yelp has created a large schedule of events to bring people together that use the crowd sourced review service.

Rash of auto thefts in South Lake Tahoe

In just three days, five cars were reported stolen in South Lake Tahoe.

On Thursday, September 10, a man who lives in the 2400 block of William Avenue called police to report his car stolen. When police arrived, they found out the man had lent the car to someone who hadn't returned it.

The following day, a white Ford F250 with a rack was reported stolen in the 1000 block of William. It has not been recovered and there are no suspects. The Nevada license plate number is NRC917.

Three cars were stolen on Saturday, September 12.

Vendor pairings announced for Labor Day's Sample the Sierra

The vendor pairings for the 6th Annual Sample the Sierra have been announced. Approximately 54 local restaurants, wineries, breweries, distilleries, farmers and producers will participate in the one-day farm-to-fork festival on Sunday, September 6 at Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe, CA.

Wag, Waddle and Walk event tonight

Dogs on the Run, a South Lake Tahoe non-profit, is hosting their monthly Wag, Waddle and Walk event on Monday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m.

The monthly dog walking activity brings together dog owners for a little exercise, optional competition and socializing. The on-leash walk starts at Al Tahoe Post Office parking lot and finishes at Sierra Pizza on Al Tahoe Blvd.

This family friendly event is for non-aggressive canines and people. Dogs must be on-leash and up-to-date on their vaccinations.

'Godfather of Tahoe Beach Clean Ups' still at it after 17 years

What began two years ago as an organized response to firework debris found on South Lake Tahoe beaches has turned into a major community wide trash pick up effort, gathering what beach goers left behind after the 4th of July activities.

But cleaning up beaches on the South Shore isn't anything new for long-time local Kenny Curtzwiler. One could call him the 'Godfather of Tahoe Beach Clean Ups."

Golfers on the course for 15 hours for "Longest Day of Golf"

Nine golfers started their day at 6 a.m. Thursday, prepared to be on the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course until 9 p.m. raising money for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League.

In their tenth year, the concept of the Day of Golf was started over a couple of cocktails at the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge. Russ Wilson and Curt Emrie formulated the idea and went to the cancer league to see if they'd like to get the donations earned during the day.

Last year, the golfers got 130 holes of golf in before dark, raising $12,000.

Free concerts every Friday and Saturday at Heavenly Village

The Heavenly Village Summer Concert Series got underway last weekend. This annual series of live music takes place every Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The stage rotates around the village from in front of Starbucks and Basecamp Pizza, to the fountain and in front along Highway 50.

Counterfeit bills on rise in El Dorado County; One arrest made

Several counterfeit bills have been used for transactions on the west slope of El Dorado County, even days after the arrest of one suspect. On May 8, the Sheriff Deputies were called to the Round Table Restaurant in Pollock Pines after a man tried to buy food with a counterfeit $100 bill. He and a woman left before deputies arrived but a description of the pair and their vehicle was provided to EDCSO.

Yappy Hour to benefit Animal Coalition of Tahoe

Dogs and their humans are invited to participate in the inaugural Yappy Hour, a fun filled event being hosted by the Animal Coalition in Tahoe (ACT). Hang out on the patio at Base Camp Pizza with your pooch on April 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and enjoy fabulous food and drink.

Yappy Hour can be celebrated even if you don't have a dog.

A portion of all proceeds from the evening's sales will be donated to ACT for their spay-neuter program and for the County Animal Shelter in Meyers.

Suspect sought in Gardnerville Pizza Hut robbery

An armed suspect robbed the Pizza Hut in Gardnerville at gunpoint on March 23, asking the clerk for all the money from the cash register.

At 8:15 p.m., the unknown man entered the restaurant located at 1362 Hwy 395 in Gardnerville, NV. After getting the money he left the store on foot, out of view.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken.

The suspect is described as 5'10 or 5'11 inches tall, medium build, wearing dark sunglasses, a dark gray or black pullover hoodie, a navy blue neckerchief and a solid white neckerchief.

Flash mob to bring awareness to domestic violence being held Saturday

Men, women and children have been practicing for the big flash mob on Saturday in South Lake Tahoe which is being held to bring awareness to domestic violence.

The "One Billion Rising Revolution" is occurring around the world on February 14, a large mass action to end violence against women. Originally held o Valentine's Day in 2012, the movement is bringing awareness to the staggering statistics that one in three women will be raped or beaten during her lifetime. with the world population at seven billion, this adds up toe more than one billion women and girls affected.

Many donations needed during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe blood drive

January is a National Blood Donor Month and donations are needed in the South Lake Tahoe area.

Tahoe Douglas Fire is hosting a blood drive on Tuesday, January 20 from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the fire station located at 193 Elks Point Rd in Round Hill. Call (775) 588-3591 to make an appointment or stop by the station.

South Lake Tahoe's Lighthouse Community helps out SnowGlobers

The death of 19-year old Alyssa Byrne during the 2013 SnowGlobe event in South Lake Tahoe is still on people's minds, especially now that the temperatures have dropped into single digits with wind chills expected to take them down into negative figures.

Nick and Kadi Alfield wanted to do something this year in Byrne's memory, so they had a booth at SnowGlobe that not only charged cell phones but also gave away gloves, scarves and hats to attendees who were cold.

Despite the power outages and high winds in the South Shore, the Marriott Grand Residence Club was warm and cozy (with power!) on Thursday night, which made it the perfect first stop for TahoeChamber’s annual Winter Wine Walk Business After Hours Mixer (BAHM!). Nearly 100 guests began their tours at the Marriott Grand Residence Club with a taste from Crystal Basin Cellars before embarking on a tour to participating businesses. Each shop welcomed attendees with food, drinks and raffle prizes. It was a fun, blustery night that included great food, wine and friends.

Skiers and boarders hit the slopes for opening day at Heavenly

Friday was opening day at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, and if the crowds that hit the slopes is any indication, the weekend will be a busy one. The ski resort has been busy making snow since the Mother Nature variety has been lacking so far this season.

The resort is reporting an 18" base.

Heavenly Village was full of skiers, riders and families all day. The outdoor dining areas at Base Camp Pizza and Gun Barrel Tavern were busy for lunch and apres ski activities.

Have you ever wanted to in a parade? This fun experience is waiting for you at the Third Annual Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 13. Golden Bear Events of South Lake Tahoe is planning this fun community event.

The 3 p.m. parade will start on the corner of Ski Run Blvd and Pioneer Trail, proceed down Ski Run, west on Highway 50 to TJMaxx at the Y.
