LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Helicopters, fire trucks, K-9s and demonstrations are just a few of the activities planned for 23rd annual Fire Fest on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. outside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

Admission is free and the event is a great opportunity for families to have fun while learning about safety and conservation.

Homelessness is a housing issue in South Lake Tahoe and beyond

Homelessness isn’t just a South Lake Tahoe issue. It isn’t just an El Dorado county issue. It isn't just a California problem, though the state ranks 49th in housing units per capita.

And it isn't a problem that is going away any time soon and will take a change in the way the problem is currently being addressed to be solved. For every 100 people who are added to the population of California there are only 32 housing units built to house them.

Pair arrested after phones stolen from South Lake Tahoe stores

South Lake Tahoe massage parlor owner arrested for sexual battery

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The owner of a South Lake Tahoe massage parlor has been arrested on suspicion of sexual battery.

Qiteng "Eric" Lu, owner of Chinese Magic Massage at 3330 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, was arrested without incident on July 6 after a customer said that during her massage she was sexually battered.

Investigators from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) found enough cause to arrest Lu after interviewing the 34-year-old victim.

South Lake Tahoe police looking for assailant who severely injured man

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in finding the person responsible for the recent assault of a 23-year-old man from Pennsylvania.

On Monday, June 26, 2017, officer responded to a 9-1-1 call in the area near Hotel Becket on Park Avenue between Cedar Avenue and Lake Tahoe Blvd. When they arrived they found the victim, Adam Albaugh, unresponsive and suffering from a significant head injury.

Tracy man held on $1.5M bail after being arrested in South Lake Tahoe

A 27-year-old man from Tracy, California was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Sunday after a warrant had been issued for his arrest on a slew of charges stemming with his relationship with a 16-year-old girl.

Since his arrest, Omar Oceguera has been transferred from the El Dorado County Jail to the San Joaquin County Jail where his sits on a $1.515 million bail hold.

Small fire and jet ski accident keeping fire and police busy in South Lake Tahoe

The long 4th of July holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe got off to a busy start Saturday with a water rescue and fire.

A boater saw smoke coming from the hillside near Heavenly, called it in from their location off the Ski Run Marina at 1:29 p.m. and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police combed the streets in the area to try and locate the source. The fire was spotted on U.S. Forest Service land off Keller Road in between Ruby Way and Wildwood Ave.

South Lake Tahoe area law enforcement, agencies and safety personnel are preparing for a very busy holiday weekend, full of people coming to enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities. Ex-Lake Tahoe Humane Society director leaves town, no charges filed yet

Former executive director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society moved out of South Lake Tahoe over the weekend, leaving many in the community questioning the timing after she was fired on March 31 amidst accusations of misappropriation of agency funds.

Niki Congero moved out of her rental home because she was given a 60-day notice to vacate May 4. The owner of the home wanted to use it for his purposes, according to Realty World, the property management company.

A Concord, California man enjoying a kayak ride on the Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe had a near miss with tragedy Saturday after his kayak flipped, catching him in some bushes.

Memorial in South Lake Tahoe dedicated to local heroes

The new public safety memorial wall was dedicated during a public ceremony on Friday. Fire trucks and patrol cars lined the street as law enforcement, US Forest Service and fire personnel gathered at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Speakers included Undersheriff Randy Peshon, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston.

Community turns out for celebration of SLT Police Department's 50th anniversary

The first South Lake Tahoe Police Department community gathering was a successful one on Saturday as the 50th anniversary of the department was celebrated with hundreds of people at Lakeview Commons. There were rides on both the police and fire boats, a concert, BBQ, interactions with the police K-9s, booths, fingerprinting and an awards ceremony.

Going above and beyond the call of duty was recognized with awards to both staff members and the public.

Cyclist dies after collision with car in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is investigating a collision on Saturday night that claimed the life of a cyclist.

For unknown reasons, a male cyclist crossed the road in front of a car traveling westbound on Highway 50 between Johnson Boulevard and Takela Drive on May 13, 2017 at 7:40 p.m.

The cyclist was transported to Barton Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival according to Sgt. Brandon Auxier of SLTPD. The rider's name and hometown is being withheld until notification of next-of-kin.

SLT Police stepping up responses to complaints of homeless and transients

During the spring and summer of 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe received many complaints for homeless people causing safety and health problems in parks and public places, mainly Lakeview Commons, Campground by the Lake, Heavenly Village and the transit centers at both ends of town.

This spring the number of calls have increased, and officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police have responded. The main five locations the problems occurred at in 2016 remain the same so far in 2017.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue looks to City Council for new boat

Without a boat since 2015, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) will ask City Council for $75,000 on Tuesday for the purchase of a used SAFE boat.

The former fire rescue boat, Marine 17, was taken off the lake (decommissioned) in 2015 after 15 years of service. Needed repairs amounted to more than the value of the boat. Since the SLTFR has borrowed Marine 2 which belongs to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Body of missing Sacramento woman found in Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of 62-year-old Pamela Suwinsky was found in the Upper Truckee River Sunday morning, about one-third mile north of Highway 50. Divers found her before noon but did not have positive identification until about 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Public's help needed in locating woman missing from South Lake Tahoe motel

A woman visiting South Lake Tahoe has not been seen since Monday afternoon.

Sacramento resident Pamela Suwinsky, 62, left Motel 6 on foot between 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. She left behind her purse, cell phone, car and beloved dog. She did have her ID and credit cards with her.

At 10:00 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the motel located at 2375 Lake Tahoe Blvd. after Pamela's ex-husband and long-time friend reported her missing.

New lieutenant and sergeant for South Lake Tahoe Police Department

Two members of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were promoted on during an official swearing-in ceremony at the Lake Tahoe Airport on Monday.

Shannon Laney was promoted to lieutenant and Doug Sentell was promoted to sergeant as they took their oath with SLTPD Police Chief Brian Uhler.

With the retirement of Brian Williams, Laney was chosen to take his place, then Sentell took over Laney's old position.

Originally we were told the suspect was born in 1945, instead, he is a 45-year-old male.

Auto thefts and burglaries continue to target South Lake Tahoe residents

There has been a rash of suspicious circumstances in the Gardner Mountain area over the last week, ones that remind residents to lock their cars to prevent petty theft and other crimes of opportunity.

On March 19 between 4:04 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., 10 calls went into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department about suspicious activity on Gardner Street, Clement Street, Julie Lane, Tata Lane and Sand Harbor Road. In each incident, dome lights were on several cars as if some person(s) attempted to open them. In one incident the truck's doors were open and a stereo was stolen.

Two South Lake Tahoe teens arrested for alleged kidnapping and beating; Third sought

Two 18-year-old girls turned themselves into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on Friday evening after they became aware of a warrant out for their arrest on charges of kidnapping and battery.

According to SLTPD, Christina Barnhart and Lily Brooks and a third teen are suspected of forcing themselves into an apartment in the 3600 block of Spruce Avenue on Tuesday, February 28 and pulling the occupant out by her hair, and then dragging her outside where they allegedly kicked and punched the victim.

Auto burglaries on rise in South Lake Tahoe; Two car thefts in one day

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning residents and visitors to take extra precaution in protecting their valuables as nine thefts from vehicles occurred between February 20-25, and two cars were stolen on February 24.

Six of the auto burglaries were in the Tahoe Island area and most of the cars involved in the City were left unlocked by their owners.

The first stolen car was a 2010 Silver Nissan Altima with Illinois license plate Z495853. It was stolen from the 1100 block of Herbert Avenue but has since been recovered.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A fugitive pot plant trimmer suspected in the robbery and brutal killing of an operator of a commercial marijuana farm in Mendocino County was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Friday afternoon.

Man arrested after allegedly assaulting a South Lake Tahoe police officer and stealing his baton

A South Lake Tahoe man is sitting in the El Dorado County jail after being arrested on suspicion of several charges including headbutting a police officer, grabbing his baton and trying to also grab his weapon.

37-year-old Richard David Castello is being held on $192,500 bail for taking an officer's weapon, obstruction of justice and battery on a peace officer.

Immigrants in South Lake Tahoe reach out to police and school district

South Lake Tahoe is a community of diverse backgrounds reaching around the world, and with President Trump's current dialog on immigration, concerns are arising among immigrants who call Tahoe home, and from those that represent them in the area.

The current enrollment of Lake Tahoe Unified School District shows 42.4 percent are Hispanic, 3.6 percent Filipino, 1.2 percent Asian, 48.1 percent white and the rest of other nationalities.

SLT Police contending with drivers going too fast and not prepared for conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - There are basic rules when behind the wheel, not only in fair weather, but also in stormy and snowy weather as South Lake Tahoe has been experiencing.

Here are tips for driving in snow from the American Automobile Association (AAA):
- Accelerate and decelerate slowly
- Drive slowly
- The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds
- Know your brakes
- Don't stop if you can avoid it
- Don't power up hills. ...
- Don't stop going up a hill
- Stay home

Cars parked on streets causing major problems for snowplows

Snowplow operators have been working 12-hour shifts to get the roads in South Lake Tahoe cleared of snow, and they will continue widening roads starting Friday to prepare for the next storm.

During winter snow conditions, snow plows have the right of way on streets and vehicles left unattended in the streets are subject to a citation and/or getting towed. Law enforcement is seeing a large number of cars parked on neighborhood streets and not where they belong in driveways.

New telephone scam targeting South Lake Tahoe residents

South Lake Tahoe residents in South Lake Tahoe have been receiving calls from people pretending to be from Microsoft, and the SLT Police Department wants to alert the public on the scam.

A local senior couple was recently contacted, and the scammers told them they had overpaid Microsoft in the past and Microsoft wanted to refund them the money. The scammer had the victims turn on their computer and give them remote access.

South Lake Tahoe find missing man cold, but alert

9:50 a.m. update - A South Lake Tahoe Police detective found Daniel Trevis at 9:26 a.m. this morning on Park Avenue less than a mile from his residence. Trevis was wrapped in a blanket, awake and alert, but was very cold. His son is taking him for a medical evaluation. SLTPD thanks the public for their assistance.

Police make arrest in South Lake Tahoe drive by shooting

Kevin Gonzales, an 18-year-old local man, has been arrested in connection with a drive by shooting that occurred on December 28 at the Pioneer Inn in South Lake Tahoe.

Gonzales was arrested two days later after an investigation by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was launched into the shooting which took place at 10:00 p.m. at the motel, located on Pioneer Trail.

Minors with alcohol at SnowGlobe biggest problem for law enforcement

The 2016 South Lake Tahoe three-day long music festival, SnowGlobe, is over, and the thousands of of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fans are headed home after enjoying themselves during the outdoor concert. Like with most festivals of this type, most of the arrests and citations issued by South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO), and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) were for underage drinking.

Early tabulations show that during SnowGlobe this year there were 238 arrests, 148 of those were citations to minors in possession of alcohol.
