Work starts this spring on Round Hill Pines Access Project; New entrance and exit planned

Old Bart's Tahoe Apartments in South Lake Tahoe gets clean bill of health under new ownership

They have now passed the South Lake Tahoe Multi-Family Dwelling and Inspection Program and earned a clean bill of health along with a certificate of compliance.
Mt. Rose snowpack fares better than the California slopes: 70% of average

Nevada (NRCS). Jeff Anderson, NRCS hydrologist, was at Mt. Rose to conduct the manual monthly measurement.
“We’ve already lost about a third of the snow this year at our SNOTEL sites,” said Anderson.
Suspect arrested after car chase starting at Lake Tahoe ends with a home owner detaining him at gunpoint
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/04/2022 - 1:53pmA 30-year-old man from Elk Grove, Calif. has been arrested on several charges after leading law enforcement on a chase from US50 near Cave Rock through Carson City and into Reno.
At 10:00 p.m. on April 3, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office attempted a traffic stop on a black Dodge Ram truck near Cave Rock. The driver of the vehicle fled from deputies and proceeded over Spooner Summit into Carson City.
Living Snow Project: TERC presentation on understanding pink snow and life in the snowpack

The Living Snow Project (LSP), with the help of the outdoor recreation community, is building the largest database of pink snow microbiome biodiversity in the world. Pink snow, sometimes called watermelon snow, is a diverse group of microorganisms that are adapted to live in snow and are dominated by pink-colored algae. The snow algae can influence snowmelt rates and offer insight into life in extreme environments.
The project will be discussed at a UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) virtual presentation on Thursday, April 14 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At the Tuesday, April 5 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, they will look at a new trash ordinance that will not allow residents to put trash out before 6:00 a.m. on collection day. The move is being looked at due to increased bear activity and their propensity to hit garbage cans for meals.
Gaming Control Board: Nevada casino win up 44% from 2021; South Shore only region with a drop

The South Shore Lake Tahoe casino's win was down 3.93 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $19,672,671, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report. This was the second consecutive month for the South Shore to be down slightly from the previous year's figures and was the only region in the state to see a decrease in the win.
Lake Wind Advisory to start off the week in South Lake Tahoe; High of 72 by Friday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/03/2022 - 4:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Lake Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno for Monday, April 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. West winds are expected from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe are from 2 to 4 feet.
There will be mild temperatures to start off the week, according to NWS Reno. Any rain chances will be limited to far northern areas towards the Oregon border. Much warmer temperatures are expected on Thursday and Friday with a tie of record high temperatures possible, then cooling over next weekend.

Douglas County Search and Rescue Team locates human remains in Pinenuts

The remains were located in the Sunrise Pass area of the Pinenut Mountains, near the Lyon County line.
Douglas County Sheriff’s investigators are attempting to identify the identity of the decedent.
At this time, no other information is available.
Incline Village man facing multiple charges after aiming gun at housecleaners, firing it into air

Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) patrol deputies were called to the Incline Village home shortly before 9:40 a.m. on March 30 for an assault with a deadly weapon in progress.
The deputies arrived in three minutes. Nevada State Police Highway patrol troopers and deputies from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist.
Driest January-March in over 100 years in Sierra leads to local snow measurement of 4% of average

They found a snow depth of just 2.5 inches, with a snow-water equivalent of just a single inch. The latter amount is just four percent of the historic average for the spot west of Lake Tahoe on April 1.
As a state, the current snowpack is 38 percent of average, far below the 154 percent statewide on January 1, 2022.

Even if open for public access, those visiting the forest are reminded to use extra caution when recreating due to the hazards that remain in recently burned landscapes.
The following roads, trails, and developed recreation sites directly impacted by the fire in the Eldorado National Forest (ENF) will remain closed for ongoing hazard mitigation under Forest Order 03-22-06:

Body found in remote Churchill County confirmed as missing 18-year-old Naomi Irion

Acting on that tip, investigators from the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office along with a detective from the Lyon County Sheriff’s office responded to a remote part of Churchill County on Tuesday, March 29. Their investigation led them to a possible gravesite and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Investigative Services team was contacted and responded to assist in processing the scene.

Work on US50 between South Lake Tahoe and Kyburz to continue to mid-July

The December storms caused more damage with debris movement in the Caldor Fire area, with additional damage still being identified, according to Caltrans.
Rock scaling work along Echo Summit wrapped up Friday, but the contractor hired, JPR, is back this week to finish up other work and there are one-way traffic controls in place.
Police and fire respond to two vehicle collisions in South Lake Tahoe

At 8:42 p.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the scene and found a white Dodge Caravan over the edge, resting on a red Toyota 4-Runner that was parked in the Safeway parking lot.
The 42-year-old male driver of the Caravan was cited for misdemeanor DUI at Barton Hospital, according to SLTPD Lt. Travis Cabral.
Caldor Fire evacuation will have rippling and lasting effects on bear behavior for seasons to come

The team is a partnership between the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Parks, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and the USDA Forest Service.
Congress appropriates $269k to LTCC for crucial Fire Academy training equipment

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has a Winter Weather Advisory in place until Monday night at 8:00 p.m. The main effects will be above 7,000 feet. After a week of record high temperatures, they cool this week. There may be some thunderstorms Monday. This weather system exits the region Tuesday with most shower activity ending by sunrise. The remainder of the week looks dry with temperatures closer to average.
South Lake Tahoe police arrest local man after merchandise purchased fraudulently

Officer Dylan Sullivan of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) took a report of the fraudulent use of the victim's account on March 22, 2022. Over $5,500 worth of tools and equipment had been obtained illegally.
Winter Weather Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory starting at midnight Sunday, and ending Monday at 8:00 p.m.
Snow levels will remain near and above 6000 feet, with snow accumulations mainly limited to passes above 7000 feet due to the recent warmth and late-March sun angle. The only exception will be early Monday morning, where light, slushy accumulations may occur as low as 6000 feet.

Fallon man arrested in connection with disappearance of Fernley woman

The suspect has been identified as Troy Driver, 41-years-old, of Fallon, Nev. He is being held on kidnapping charges. A pickup truck possibly involved in the case has been impounded.

There have been 53 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death recorded since last Friday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 26,745. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive.
There are now 2.7 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

Friday should see another record broke for South Lake Tahoe with a forecast high of 67°F and the previous record was 64°F.

UC Davis research shows older wildfire smoke plumes can affect climate

The research, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, suggests that wildfire emissions even 10 days old can affect the properties of aerosols — suspended liquid or particles that are key to cloud formation.

Under current law in California, state park campgrounds are exempt from local fire protection ordinances. Hosted U.S. Forest Service campgrounds with fire rings in place are also exempt, but this may be changing.

These prescribed fire operations are expected to continue as conditions allow to help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.
