LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Plan received a 2024 Project Excellence Award from the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals (SORP) during the National Outdoor Recreation Conference held in Stateline last week. The most current sponsorship meal was held on Monday, May 6, and once again Sierra Sotheby’s sent an excellent volunteer crew to participate in the evening meal service.
In addition to Ellen Camacho, the Sierra Sotheby’s sponsorship AAD crew included returning volunteers Demian Black and Haily Mitchell, and Angie Challenor, who was participating in AAD for the first time.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will have their May 14 meeting in the City of South Lake Tahoe council chambers at the airport at 10 a.m. On their agenda is the discussion of changes to the VHR rental program, the Tahoe Area Plan, and moving Meeks Bay Fire to North Tahoe Fire.
There is a 10 a.m. certain item concerning the County's Vacation Home Rental ordination and updates recommended by Supervisor Brooke Laine and her 13-member community advisory committee.

The Mane Event celebrates Between Horses and Humans in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tickets are now on sale for the second annual Mane Event, a fundraiser for Between Horses and Humans. This youth-oriented nonprofit serves Douglas County and the Lake Tahoe area and teaches kids life skills through horsemanship. The Mane Event is Saturday, June 1 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Cowork Tahoe, 3079 Harrison Ave. in South Lake Tahoe.
The event features live music, an animal meet and greet, food and beverages, a silent auction, kids raffle and face painting, community mural painting, games, and more. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for kids.

While it’s common to joke about wine-drinking culture, relying on alcohol to cope with family demands and work stress is no laughing matter.
Drinking a glass of wine can provide relaxation and enjoyment at first, because alcohol affects neurotransmitters such as dopamine (the pleasure neurotransmitter). However, alcohol has a disruptive effect as your body breaks it down, so unwinding with a glass at night might result in fragmented sleep and frequent waking. Lack of good sleep may make you tired and irritable the next day, fueling daily stressors.

INYO COUNTY, Calif. - The Inyo County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding two overdue hikers on Mt. Whitney on Tuesday, May 7 around 8:30 p.m. The hikers intended to descend to the “Notch” with the intention of skiing/snowboarding from the “Notch” back to Upper Boy Scout Lake where they had set up camp. The “Notch” is located on the right side of the face of Mt. Whitney from the Mount Whitney Mountaineer Route.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) will consider raising water and sewer rates at its May 16 board meeting. The public has been invited to public meetings over the past several months, and now they are invited to participate in the final step to raise rates for water and sewer customers. STPUD says $132 million is needed over the next ten years to bring the system up to par.

STATELINE, Nev. - Matt Grime has been working at the Fox & Hound at Lake Tahoe since before he could drive, and before graduating from Whittell High School in 1999. When his dad Harvey opened the place in 1991, little did Matt know he and Harvey would be partners in the same business 33 years later.
Harvey had successfully operated other bars in South Lake Tahoe and Zephyr Cove starting in the 1970s before the Fox & Hound - the Bitter Creek, Sam's Place, the Thirsty Duck, and the Shoals.

Alpenglow Sports is kicking off its 4th annual Community Book Initiative on May 13. The month-long event will highlight 21 books, chosen in collaboration with 10 respected and diverse community members, admired for their mountain, environmental and/or social leanings. The event will run from May 13-June 10, during which all of the proceeds from these specific titles will benefit the local nonprofit, Clean Up the Lake. The Dead Winter Carpenters, who formed their Americana roots/rock band in 2010 on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, are local fan favorites and the biggest local break-out band from the Tahoe area. DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School District trustees will decide which of the six candidates for the superintendent position they will interview, and how they will obtain stakeholder feedback at their May 21 meeting.
Applications of the six individuals have been distributed to the trustees along with a screening form where they will individually rank the candidates. During the May 21 meeting, the trustees are scheduled to discuss their screening results and select which candidates will be brought forward for interviews.

Since moving to South Lake Tahoe more than 2 years ago, I’ve spent a lot of time participating in community forums and City Council meetings. Within moments, labels like "local," "patriot" and "environmentalist” come forth and are used to dismiss and exclude others from the community discourse. These terms are clear examples of the “no true Scotsman” logical fallacy that painfully and unnecessarily divides us.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Stephen Curry will be skipping his golf shoes this July and instead heading to Paris with his basketball shoes for the Olympics where he is a member of Team USA.
Curry was the winner at the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe in 2023 and will forego his title defense in search of Olympic gold for 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dave Ennis, a long-time South Lake Tahoe local, recently came to the rescue of two local properties - the American Legion and Grocery Outlet.
For the last few years, there has been a hole in the rear of the American Legion building where a screened grate was once in place. Dave is a member of the American Legion and told Commander Tom Milham he'd get his "Genie" lift back in town and replace the grate. Dave got up on the lift and replaced the grate.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe has held a Spelling Bee for students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District for the last 40 years. Last week the word action returned, with students from Sierra House, Bijou, and Meyers elementary schools participating (all local schools are invited).

On May 2nd, an article was published in South Tahoe Now, “Technology being used as a partner in forest fuels treatment at Lake Tahoe,” describing the new “BurnBot” and its brush clearing capabilities. The article opens with a statement from Amy Berry of the Tahoe Fund, claiming that “we are going to lose the whole forest” if they aren’t “thinned”.
Couple honored by Pay it Forward Project for Bread & Broth volunteering

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two South Lake Tahoe residents have been honored by the Pay It Forward Project for their volunteer work on the South Shore. Dave Carneggie and Bonnie Driscoll were given a $250 grant in their honor to give to the nonprofit of their choice, and they selected Tahoe Magic. They were also treated to dinner at the Chart House as a thank-you for all they have done for the community.
