SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On November 8, 2021, the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) board had given staff the okay to start negotiations to purchase the 31.5-acre site currently home to Motel 6 and the old Carrows building in South Lake Tahoe. At the time they had approved $10,000,000 to purchase the environmentally sensitive parcels, demolish existing structures, and stabilize the related sites which are along the Upper Truckee River.

UPDATE: The victim was located on July 23, 2013, walking near the KOA Campground near the Upper Truckee River. He had major injuries and was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on September 16, 2013.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 38-year-old man who has called the South Lake Tahoe area home for the last several years was arrested on December 13, 2022, after a warrant was issued for his arrest on suspicion of murder.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust and Foundation has awarded $2.46 million in mental and behavioral health grants to community-based organizations in nine mountain communities across North America, including Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe, and Truckee. This is the fifth year grants were awarded, with aggregate funding of over $13.5M, to help increase overall access to mental health care, reduce behavioral health stigma and improve community-developed services for communities of color and indigenous populations. This year’s grants will benefit over 40 organizations.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Douglas County School District has released a Lake Schools Bus Notice for Thursday and Friday, December 15-16.

Due to current road conditions, bus RT 202 will be using these main stops:

- For George Whittell High School - the stop for Upper Kingsbury /Tramway/ area will be at SKI and TINA from 6:30 a.m. to 6:40 a.m.
- The stop for Chimney Rock students will be KINGSBURY and MANOR at 7:02 a.m.
- All other stops remain the same

- For Zephyr Cove Elementary School - the stop for Upper Kingsbury/ Tramway/Andria area will be SKI and TINA from 7:40 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.

Western Nevada College (WNC) will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Jack C. Davis Observatory in 2023. The observatory is named after the college’s first president and opened in 2003 with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, lecturing at opening ceremonies.      

In honor of this milestone anniversary, WNC Foundation and the JCDO Director Dr. Thomas Herring have worked together to create some spectacular astrophotography for its annual fundraising note card campaign.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Celebrate HSI STEM week at the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). Radical Innovative Scholars Advancing STEM (RISAS) is the newest program on the LTCC campus after they received a five-year $5 million federal grant to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students pursuing various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) degrees. They join other Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) receiving funds to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students who are interested in pursuing education and careers in STEM.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - From athlete panel sessions about backcountry safety to expert talks about snowpack science and the impacts of wildfires on snow conditions, the third annual Tahoe Backcountry Safety Awareness Week is chock full of in-person and virtual events curated by Take Care Tahoe that focuses on the dangers of the backcountry. From December 12-17, 2022, just as avalanche danger will be increasing in the area due to the weekend storm, both novice and experienced backcountry users will have opportunities to learn how to safely recreate in the backcountry this winter.

9AM UPDATE WEDNESDAY: With power restored to South Lake Tahoe, the warning room has closed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe will re-open the charging and warming station at the Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd., starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13 for a 24-hour period.

As Liberty Utilities continues to work to restore power, the City recognizes many have been without power for more than 48 hours and want to provide a safe and warm location to recharge devices. Staff will be onsite, but no other services will be provided.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The California Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) has awarded a $305,000 grant to the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California for work in the Lake Tahoe Basin to improve forest and watershed health and reduce wildfire risk. The grant helps increase the Tribe’s capacity to participate in forest, watershed, and wildfire resilience projects at Tahoe, as well as to advance the use of cultural prescribed burning and to cultivate culturally significant native plants.

STATELINE, Nev. - The warming shelter at the Douglas County Kahle Community Center is now closed. NV Energy expects to have power restored by 10 a.m. There are approximately 70 customers on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe without power.

In California, Liberty Utilities expects to have power restored by 10 a.m. as well and the City has no plans to reopen the Senior Center warming and charging room.

STATELINE, Nev.- Douglas County has opened a warming shelter at the Douglas County Kahle Community Center as part of a collaborative effort to assist those without power from the NV Energy Outage.

The center will be open all night in response to the cold temperatures affecting the Tahoe area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With residents around Lake Tahoe experiencing prolonged power outages over the weekend due to the storm, food safety is an issue when food has been unrefrigerated.

Don't taste it to determine if it's okay to eat! It may not be safe to eat after the loss of power and you may need to throw away food that could make you sick.

Here are guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC);

Before a power outage

NV Energy reports 1,062 customers at Lake Tahoe between Stateline and Glenbrook still do not have power. At this time they expect restoral by 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Liberty Utilities reports 6.050 customers of theirs around Lake Tahoe remain without power as well, with expected restoral by noon Monday. Most of the outages are on the South Shore but there are areas around Fallen Leaf Lake, Kings Beach, and a couple of other pockets still out as well.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District ILTUSD) made the following announcement today:

Due to heavy snow, no power in several schools (and communities), down trees, roads not cleared and campuses not quite ready, all LTUSD schools will be closed on Monday, December 12, 2022.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A large portion of Liberty Utilities customers on the South Shore, and some spread around Lake Tahoe are without power Sunday morning.

Most were restored by 1:30 a.m. this morning, but it was short-lived with power going out again after 5 a.m.

Crews are working to get the power restored and, according to the outage website, they hope the power is up by 8 a.m., after that for Portala and North Shore.

SATURDAY 10 PM UPDATE: A few more areas of South Lake Tahoe are added to the list of those without power. Some areas of Stateline, Al Tahoe. and Tahoe Sierra are also without electricity. 6577 Liberty Utilities customers are without power.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavy snow Saturday night is not only making driving a miserable experience through the Sierra, but it has also led to power outages for over 5,000 customers in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers area.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe officially cut the ribbon on its new Lakeview Express chairlift on Thursday.

The $7.5M Lakeview zone project was the largest capital improvement project in the resort’s history and changes the way skiers and riders experience the mountain. Lakeview Express caters to low-level and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and the new Lakeside trail offers expansive views of Lake Tahoe. It is the preferred route to access the popular Around the World trail.

Tahoe Paradise Park, otherwise known as Tahoe Paradise Recreations & Park District (TPRPD) in Meyers is seeking an event vendor to assist with their long-running Friday night music summer series program in 2023 and has published a Request For Proposals (RFP) for interested parties.

TPRPD prefers Music-in-the-Park (MITP) events to have a similar 'look & feel' to past MITP events. For this RFP the Park prefers to work with businesses and contractors located within a one-hour drive of the park site, to further support the economy of our region.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the State of California awarded the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) $9,576,000 in 2020 to help with their goal of ending homelessness in South Lake Tahoe, it seemed like a great solution for the community. The funds were used to purchase the Red Lodge, El Nido Motel, and Bear's Den motels.
