Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe Wednesday-Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quick-moving storm has prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the Greater Lake Tahoe Basin for Wednesday night at 10 p.m. through Friday morning at 10 a.m.

Heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 10 inches at lake level, 10 to 16 inches possible above that, and 14 to 26 inches above 7000 feet possible, highest along the Sierra crest. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in valley locations with gusts above 100 mph along the Sierra crest.

Opinion: It's still okay to visit Lake Tahoe

A recent Fodor travel guide story suggested those with plans to visit Lake Tahoe should reconsider due to persistent traffic and the impact it has on lake clarity. While we agree there’s more to be done to take care of this special place, there are efforts already underway, and certainly better ways to achieve the same goal than by just saying “don’t go.”

Kudos: Thank you El Dorado County Department of Transportation

I don't normally write the Kudos in South Tahoe Now, I leave that to the public, but I wanted to take time to highlight action by the El Dorado County Department of Transportation (DOT).

I have lived off Black Bart Avenue since 1983, and have seen many things change from a stop light on Pioneer Trail, the addition of a 25-mph zone, and the addition of new homes. During this time the road has also become a main cut-through for drivers going from lake Tahoe Blvd. to Pioneer Trail.

Windy start and snowy end to the week ahead in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a quiet holiday weekend, a few storms are on track to bring back colder temperatures, periods of windy conditions, and the
potential for snow in the Sierra and western Nevada in the week ahead.

To start things off, there is a Lake Wind Advisory for Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph expected. Waves are expected of 2 to 4 feet. mall boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

New Comstock Express lift opens at Northstar California

Friday was the official grand opening of the new Comstock Express lift at Northstar California! They celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new lift is a huge milestone for us as they enter their 50th anniversary season. The Comstock Express lift has been upgraded from a four-person chair to a high-speed six-person lift, which is designed to reduce wait times at one of the mountain’s most popular lifts and will increase uphill capacity by nearly 50 percent.

The new Comstock lift will be the third lift to have this alignment at Northstar.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District to adopt new Fire Code

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) has posted a notice of intent to adopt the 2022 Fire Code Ordinance.

LVFPD will hold its first public hearing at 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 8 at it Station 7 at 2211 Keetak Street, Meyers.

The hearing is being held regarding the adoption of the 2022 Fire Code Ordinance pursuant to Health and Safety Code Sections 13869 and 13869.7. Copies of the code section referred to and any secondary code sections referred to, adopted by reference, are on file with the Secretary of the District and are open to public inspection.

Shops at Heavenly Village Turkey Drive breaks records

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Shops at Heavenly Village Turkey Drive for 2022 has already passed previous years in the collection of close to 600 turkeys to date, according to organizers.

This is the third year the shops have collected turkeys for Phoenix Pantry and Christmas Cheer.

With the support of the Heavenly Village and its partners, over 300 turkeys were delivered in 2020, and over 500 in 2021.

Man arrested after getting stolen vehicle stuck in snow at Lake Tahoe, calls 9-1-1

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 34-year-old man allegedly stole a car outside of the area, then brought it to Lake Tahoe only to get stuck in the snow. He then called 9-1-1 on himself.

Angelo Valdez brought the vehicle to the South Shore and ended up on Nicoleno Road in the Spring Creek Tract. At approximately 9 a.m. on Friday, November 18, he called emergency dispatch. Due to the suspicious nature of the call, deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded. Upon arrival, they found Valdez seated in the vehicle and would not get out.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Christmas Engine schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has announced the schedule for its decorated Christmas Engine. They will be starting the anticipated seasonal visit through local streets beginning Saturday, December 10. The decorated engine will be leaving the station each night at 5 p.m. barring any weather issues or emergencies.

People can also see the engine on Dec 9 and 10 at the Festival of Winter Lights at the Recreation Center/Museum Complex.

Sentence of "life without parole" handed down almost 7 years after South Lake Tahoe murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dion Jermaine Vaccaro heard his fate in El Dorado County Superior Court in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, November 18, 2022. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for 1st-degree murder and the court imposed another 25 years to life because the jury found that he has used a gun to commit the murder. The court also imposed three years for robbery, and two years for witness intimidation.

Lake Valley Fire Christmas Engine schedule

The longstanding tradition of a decorated fire truck in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers continues again in 2022. Here is the Lake Valley Fire Protection District's holiday engine neighborhood schedule.

SLTPD receives $65,000 grant for improving traffic safety

The safety of everyone traveling is the focus of a grant awarded to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) with efforts to reduce deaths and injuries on South Lake Tahoe roads and to improve traffic analysis, reporting, and data collection.

SLTPD sought out the grant to combat recognized traffic issues within the city, including DUI, bicycle, pedestrian, and motorcycle enforcement.

The one-year grant is for the 2023 federal fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2023.

The grant will fund a variety of traffic safety programs, including:

Over 200 enjoy Community Thanksgiving Dinner with Bread & Broth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 200 dinners were served at the annual Bread & Broth Community Thanksgiving dinner.

A traditional meal was served, seconds and “to go” dinners were also provided, and food giveaway bags were handed out as well.

Thanks to the South Lake Tahoe community, Bread & Broth received over $6,000 in cash donations for the dinners and food bags, and Smart & Final provided pies, Hard Rock Hotel Casino provided rolls and utensils, and Safeway gave the non-profit gift certificate to help with the purchase food.

Tahoe Fund welcomes five new leaders to its Board of Directors

The Tahoe Fund announced that five new leaders have joined its board of directors. Invited because of their extensive leadership experience in the corporate and nonprofit sectors, these new members will guide the organization as it works to improve the Lake Tahoe environment for all to enjoy.

Christmas Tree permits available on the Stanislaus National Forest

As the holiday season approaches, the Stanislaus National Forest is pleased to announce our inaugural season offering Christmas Tree permits. In celebration of this event, this year only, Christmas Tree permits will be made available for free. Christmas Tree permits will be available Friday, November 25 through recreation.gov which charges a $2.50 processing fee. There will be a limit of 5000 permits issued.

Padilla, Feinstein and other senate leaders urge USFS to better protect communities

U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) joined Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), and Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) in leading a bipartisan letter to the United States Forest Service (USFS) regarding the lack of forest management and fire preparedness efforts made in Grizzly Flats, the California town that was destroyed by the Caldor Fire in August 2021.

El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini retires after 28 years

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - "This profession never crossed my mind," said Sheriff John D'Agostini as he reflected on his 28 years in law enforcement.

D'Agostini is a 4th generation resident of El Dorado County. He was working in construction as a general contractor and raising turkeys on the family ranch for Foster Farms before turning to a career in law enforcement. They raised 50,000 turkeys a year but found it tough to compete with the large turkey farms that put out numbers closer to one million of the birds.

LTCC Girls' Soccer heads to Sierra College for 3rd round playoff game

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Women's Soccer team has dominated the standings all season long, with several weeks sitting at the top of the CCCAA standings in the Golden Valley Conference (California Community College Athletic Association).

With their 10-0 league and 15-5-2 overall records, the LTCC Coyotes were able to sit out the first round of playoffs and were scheduled to host the 11th-seed Canada College (15-4) of Redwood City this past Saturday in South Lake Tahoe.

Barton Memorial Hospital awarded 'A' grade for patient safety

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Memorial Hospital received another ‘A’ grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Group uses more than 30 evidence-based measures of publicly available hospital safety data—including data related to medication administration, falls and trauma, and hand hygiene—that are peer-reviewed by a national panel of medical experts to assign grades to more than 2,900 U.S. acute care hospitals. This ‘A’ grade is a result of collaborative, team-driven systems in place at Barton Health that protect patients from harm.

South Lake Tahoe voters approve Measure G to streamline cannabis business fee collection

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe voters overwhelmingly approved Measure G in the November 8 election.

Measure G – the City of South Lake Tahoe Cannabis Funding/Taxation Measure – was placed on the ballot for local voter consideration, following an audit of government processes that identified the annual cannabis business fee collection process as one which could be streamlined.

El Dorado County election results clearer with about 300 ballots left to count

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - As promised, more results from the November 8 election were released today in El Dorado County, with 70 - 343 ballots with signature cured remaining. The next results will be released on Monday, November 21 at 5 p.m. Voter turnout in the county overall was 64.70 percent of the 138,537 registered voters.
