Column: Seek Help for Suicidal Thoughts

Thoughts of suicide can be difficult to talk about. But speaking up—for yourself or a loved one—could be a lifesaver.

Suicide claims the lives of more than 47,000 Americans per year. It’s a serious threat for older adults, just like younger ones. In fact, among men, those ages 75 and older have the highest suicide rate of any age group.

What to Watch For

Feeling isolated, anxious, or agitated can increase your risk for suicidal thoughts. Other signs that it’s time to get help include:
- Believing there’s no reason to live or that you’re a burden to others

The Cardigan Classic filmed at Edgewood Tahoe pits Jimmy Fallon vs. DJ Khaled

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Jimmy Fallon and DJ Khaled were at the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe in July, not to compete in the annual celebrity tournament, but to face off in a head-to-head special challenge.

Even though rain tried to cancel their match, the hung out on the course and the rain stopped just in time for their golfing on holes 17 and 18. The match will air on NBC on Friday, September 13 at 11:35 p.m. The special will stream the next day on Peacock and air on Golf Channel beginning on Monday, September 16.

Bear Fire is now 15% contained,3327 acres in size

SIERRA COUNTY, Calif. - Firefighters have been facing hot, dry days and windy conditions on the Bear Fire, which is burning west of Reno, north of Truckee, in the Tahoe National Forest. Since starting on September 2, the fire has burned 3,327 acres and is now 15 percent contained. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Our beloved Shari Sue Fairweather was born December 14, 1948, and passed away June 5, 2024. Her 75 years started at the U.S. Naval Dispensary in Seattle, Wash. with parents Donald Fairweather and Earlene Crouse Fairweather (our Gada). Donald was transferred to Mot Naval Airbase in Mountain View, Calif. and Shari became a Californian forever. She graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale in 1966. By then, she had already
developed friendships that would last her lifetime.

El Dorado County jurors to receive $100 per day in pilot program

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - California AB1981 is a pilot program that will pay a daily rate of $100 to jurists in some counties, and El Dorado County is one of the chosen areas. Starting September 1, 2024, residents called into jury duty in El Dorado County will receive $100 per day, starting on the second day of service. Before that, the fee was $15 per day.

The pilot will explore whether increases in juror compensation and mileage reimbursement rates increase juror diversity and participation.

El Dorado County supervisors to discuss suggested VHR ordinance changes

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will hear a list of recommended changes to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance at their next meeting on September 10. It is time certain on the agenda for 1:15 p.m., meaning it won't be heard before that time but it could be after.

After the VHR ordinance was approved, Supervisor Brooke Laine formed an advisory committee to evaluate it and recommend changes. The committee comprised representatives in Area 5 with VHRs - Meyers, Tahoma, Meeks Bay, Pollock Pines, and Strawberry.

This presentation will cover what we know about this leading cause of death, the most up-to-date research on prevention, and what we can all do to fight suicide. Participants will learn the common risk factors for suicide, how to spot the warning signs in others, and how to keep ourselves, our loved ones, and those in our community safe.

Audrey Shirts ~ August 12, 1934 - August 12, 2024

Audrey Pearl Shirts, born August 12, 1934, quietly passed away on August 12, 2024, her 90th birthday. Her children, Len and Paula, and their spouses, Franziska and John, were with her.

Audrey’s early years were spent with her parents, Art and Sue Jones, and brothers Claude and Harry, in Bear Lake, Michigan. The family relocated to Southern California in 1939, and Audrey graduated from Redlands High in 1952.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On September 3, Mayor Pro Tem John Friedrich submitted a letter of resignation to the South Lake Tahoe City Clerk, effective immediately.

Friedrich attended the recent budget meeting remotely but has been unable to attend meetings for several weeks for personal reasons.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has opened the application process to fill the vacant city council seat. The remaining term of Friedrich's seat is until December 10, 2024.

Douglas County adds Zoom option to commissioner's meeting due to elevator issues

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Douglas County will be providing a virtual Zoom option during the Board of County Commissioners meeting at 10 a.m. on September 5, 2024. American Legion Post 795 hosts 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

What to know about algae in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. – Algae in Lake Tahoe has been a hot topic this summer. While these tiny organisms are a natural part of Tahoe’s aquatic ecosystem, algae can become a harmful algal bloom, or HAB, under the right conditions. No HABs have been detected in Lake Tahoe this summer, but this time of year is when to be on the lookout when warm, shallow water increases the likelihood for HABs. For everyone who enjoys the region’s lakes, rivers, and creeks, it’s important to know how to spot a HAB, where to report your sightings, and what to do to keep yourselves, your pets, and others safe.

Bear Fire burning in Tahoe National Forest

UPDATE 9.3 at 9 PM: The Bear Fire has grown to 2,000 acres. The combination of warming temperatures, dry fuel conditions, and strong winds intensified the fire's behavior today. Fire crews are working tirelessly to establish containment lines, while aviation resources are actively engaged in delivering retardant and water drops. Winds tonight are expected to remain steady from the west at around 10 mph. Due to the increased fire activity, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has expanded evacuation warnings to include zones SIE-E058 and SIE-E059.

Red Flag Warning issued for Lake Tahoe and surrounding area Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Red Flag Warning and Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe on Monday, September 2 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. No campfires, wood fires, or any other flame is allowed in the Lake Tahoe Basin during the warning.

Red Flag Warning: Expect gusty winds and low humidity for the Tahoe Basin, Southern Sierra Front, and Western Lassen County.

Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

Humidity will be 15 to 20 percent.

Group gathers to protest South Lake Tahoe's proposed Measure N

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An estimated 60-70 people took over the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Al Tahoe Blvd. on Saturday to protest Measure N, the proposed $6,000 vacancy tax on November's ballot.

There were new and long-time locals and second-home owners carrying signs side-by-side during the event that was organized by local business owner Erick Asbury. He also paid for the signs people carried.

"It was very positive and everyone was very happy to be out there," said Councilmember Tamara Wallace who was out on the corner with husband Duane.

7th annual Tahoe Brewfest raises over $125k for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Despite the unexpectedly chilly and wild weather in August, the 7th annual Tahoe Brewfest on Ski Run Blvd. was a tremendous success, raising over $125,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. On Saturday, August 24, more than 40 local and regional breweries showcased their craft beer, kombucha, cider, and spirits. More than 2,000 attendees were at the event, traveling from across the globe, representing 21 states as well as countries such as Japan and France.

Two men hospitalized after they fought, allegedly stabbed each other

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two South Lake Tahoe residents fought Saturday evening, with each getting stabbed and transported to Barton Hospital. South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the wooded area near Kyburz Avenue and US50 near the Lake Tahoe Airport at about 5 p.m. on August 31.

SLTPD is investigating and there are not many details available at this time, but so far what is known is that one of the victims called 911. Both men were transported to Barton Hospital with undisclosed injuries, but SLTPD said they are stable at this time.

Cave Rock and Sand Harbor State Park boat ramps transition to winter hours

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Sand Harbor and Cave Rock boat ramps will shift to winter operating hours. The new schedule will see both boat ramps open daily from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sand Harbor's boat ramp will now be open seven days a week.

To ensure all boats are properly inspected and sealed by the 4:30 p.m. closing time, we strongly recommend planning to pull your boat or jet ski from the water by 4:00 p.m. This will provide boat inspectors with sufficient time to complete the necessary sealing process.

Major delays possible between Kings Beach and Tahoe City as Caltrans works on SR28 project

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Utility work is scheduled along the shoulders of both directions of SR-28 at the following locations and times:

The Barclay family is sad to announce the passing of Douglas Barclay. He passed in South Lake Tahoe on August 21, 2024. He was the beloved husband to Hellen Barclay and father to Prince Obere.

Next generation of boat - an all-electric, "flying" hydrofoil

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It could have been straight out of an episode of The Jetson, and part of a futuristic dream - well, the future is here. An all-electric hydrofoil boat skimming along the surface of the lake, using no gas, no lake water, the ability to make tight turns and use "crabwalk," and with no worries about waves or wakes.

CAL FIRE law enforcement officers arrest arson suspect in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A 41-year-old woman has been arrested as the suspected arsonist in three separate fires that were set in Placerville. CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers, assisted by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lacy Young of Waterford on Thursday, August 29 for starting the fires earlier in the day in the area of Fort Jim Road and Newtown Road.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There was a fatal climbing accident at Lover's Leap, Twin Bridges on Thursday afternoon. A 30-year-old woman fell while climbing with her partner and died from her injuries, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

On August 29 at about 5 p.m., El Dorado County Search and Rescue and the sheriff's office helicopter, Echo 1, responded to the area and assisted with the recovery.
