Paradise Park’s annual ‘Return to Paradise’ event returns this Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park’s location, 1011 E. San Bernardino Avenue in Meyers.

Dry and warmer conditions resume for much of this week, then another weather system arrives late in the week through next weekend, bringing increased winds, some cooling, and a chance for more showers.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/29/2022 - 1:37pmWASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Two men are hospitalized after a fireworks incident turned catastrophic early Sunday morning during a large gathering of about 500 people at Moonrocks, north of Spanish Springs, Nev.
According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO), they responded to a report of gunfire, but as they were responding found a much different scene just after midnight on May 29, 2022.

Some were excellent leaders and others struggled to live up to the task of taking what the citizens wanted and turning it into public policy. Others faded in times of crisis.
We have four people running for County Supervisor this time. The one I know best and am voting for is Tamara Wallace because she has proven, not just promised, that she can do those important two things.

Lake Wind Advisory extended through Saturday at Lake Tahoe

Southwest to west winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected. Waves are expected of 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe.
Besides Tahoe, this advisory includes Donner, Fallen Leaf, Prosser and Boca lakes and reservoirs.
Small boats, kayaks and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
AAUW to honor local Tech Trek girls

June 15, 2022 - 4:00pm The South Lake Tahoe Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) sponsors girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to attend a week-long residential camp on the campus of UC Davis.
Interested girls are nominated by their 7th-grade science or math teachers, then fill out an application, write an essay, and are then interviewed for a chance to be awarded one of the up to three local sponsorships.
Ninety-four girls from Northern California participate in core classes, workshops, presentations, and special field trips on campus.

The total Recommended Budget is $864.9 million, which is a $93.1 million (12%) increase over the FY 2021-22 Adopted Budget of $771.8 million and includes all Governmental Funds, including the use of Special Revenue Funds.

Sand Harbor releases summer hours for 2022

Visitors are advised to arrive at or after opening time. There is limited space to wait for the park to open and vehicles parked on the shoulder or blocking the highway may receive a citation.
During high visitation periods, the park gates will close when the park capacity is reached. The closure can last several hours, and the park will reopen by 5 p.m.
Lake Wind Advisory in effect again for Lake Tahoe Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/26/2022 - 7:13pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued another Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin, this time for Friday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday appears to be more of the same but no warning has been issued at this time. If planning outdoor activities, follow the current weather reports.
Expect winds from the west, 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40. For Lake Tahoe specifically, waves of 2 to 4 feet.
The advisory also covers Walker, Frenchman, Stampede, Davis, Donner, Fallen Leaf, Prosser and Boca lakes and reservoirs.

I was a little dubious though at first having a sequel decades later after the original. I mean, wow. Was someone running low on money and needed a quick cash flow? All cynicism was put to rest the moment Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” blasted into the theater! This flick stands on its own but I highly recommend seeing the original.
Barton Health's statement on rising COVID-19 cases in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/26/2022 - 5:17pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Positive cases of COVID-19 are on the rise in South Lake Tahoe, with 23.4 cases per 100,000 over the last seven days. At this time, the majority of positive cases are among people able to recover at home, and hospitalization admissions are currently stable.
As of Thursday, there were six hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in El Dorado County, one at Barton.
On May 18, when we last carried a story on the increase of cases, there had been 6556 cases of COVID-19 to date in South Lake Tahoe. That number has now grown to 6671, an increase of 115 cases in 7 days.

The Tahoe Fund and Clean Up The Lake announced today that the art display created from some of the 25,000+ pounds of litter removed from Lake Tahoe will take the form of a bald eagle holding a Lahontan cutthroat trout.
The 10-foot sculpture of the bald eagle and trout combination took first place over the Sierra Nevada red fox and Lahontan cutthroat trout.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Thursday, May 26 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. This advisory covers Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Fallen Leaf Lake, and Prosser and Boca reservoirs.
Winds will be from the southwest, 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected. There should be waves of 2 to 3 feet on Lake Tahoe.

STPUD board approves new rates and ADU requirements
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/24/2022 - 8:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors adopted new water and sewer rates and approved no connection fees for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) at the Board Meeting on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
After two years of zero rate increases, the STPUD Board adopted new rates to fund the water and sewer pipeline replacement program and keep up with increasing construction costs. These rates will go into effect on July 1, 2022.

The local company is expanding its schedule this summer to include Tahoe South’s Inaugural Big Blue Music and Brews Festival, Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series, and the 5th Annual Tahoe Brewfest.
Tahoe South’s Inaugural Big Blue Music and Brews Festival on May 27-29 is a free 3-day festival with over 45 artists performing across 17 venues along the California side of South Lake Tahoe.

Volunteer duties include monitoring trail activity and repairing trails, providing visitor information, conducting educational presentations, and helping to manage impacts to the environment at Taylor Creek.
South Lake Tahoe woman arrested for suspected DUI after crashing vehicle with child passenger
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/24/2022 - 2:54pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a report of a two-vehicle head-on collision on Chonokis Road late Saturday night.
At approximately 10:10 p.m., officers arrived and found three people injured in a car that was hit by a vehicle driven by Nayely Mora Lopez, 26, of South Lake Tahoe.
Climber from Reno dies in Alpine County accident
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/24/2022 - 2:34pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - A Reno man died Friday after falling approximately 75-feet in Woodfords Canyon, Alpine County south of Lake Tahoe.
On Friday, May 20, 2022, the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of the climbing accident. The climber, 43-year-old James Allen Brown, had succumbed to the injuries sustained in the fall.
"On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office and Alpine County, we extend our deepest condolences to the family," said JT Chevallier, the county's public information officer.
No other persons were injured in the incident.

Another sign of the drought: City of South Lake Tahoe to keep boat ramp closed in 2022
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/23/2022 - 9:33pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has closed its boat ramp at El Dorado Beach to all motorized vessels for the 2022 boating season.
Due to low lake levels, it is unsafe to launch a motorized boat at this location, the City said. The ramp never opened in 2021 for the same reason.
Non-motorized boats can still access the lake from the boat ramp. The El Dorado Beach boat ramp is located on Highway 50 at Lakeview Avenue.

Letter: Forty judicial officers statewide endorse Slossberg for judge

Among the judicial officers recently joining the list are Chief Judge Victorio L. Shaw of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Tribal Court and Superior Court Commissioner (Ret.) William Neil Shepherd. They join every current El Dorado County Superior Court Judge and every retired El Dorado County Superior Court Judge that has endorsed a candidate in supporting Slossberg.
Tahoe Fund names Cory Ritchie board chair, expands staff to five

In addition, the organization has added new firepower to its small team. Caitlin Meyer joins from Senator Feinstein’s office as the Tahoe Fund’s first Chief Program Officer and Caroline Waldman has been hired as its Communications and Program Director.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a hiatus during the pandemic, Lake Tahoe Community College’s (LTCC) popular Writers’ Series is returning this June with a free reading, book signing, and conversation with writers Gayle Brandeis and Suzanne Roberts. The public is welcome to the event on Thursday, June 2 from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the Roberta Mason Library on LTCC's campus.
Each writer will read selections from their works, followed by a book signing for any interested audience members. Books for signing will be available for sale at the event.
