Tahoe Prosperity Center receives US EDA grant for Tahoe Basin Resiliency Plan
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/08/2021 - 12:32pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Prosperity Center announced today that it received a notice of award of a US Economic Development Administration grant of $164,348 to facilitate a Tahoe Basin-wide Economic Recovery and Resiliency Plan.
“Tahoe’s Transition – Economic Recovery to Resiliency will create an action plan with steps for the region to implement to diversify the regional economy, which has become dangerously dependent on the Tourism sector,” said Heidi Hill Drum, Tahoe Prosperity Center’s CEO.

Winter Storm Watch issued for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/08/2021 - 9:24amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Mono County from 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 9 to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Heavy snow is possible. For the Tahoe Basin, 6 to 12 inches possible at Lake Tahoe level with 12 to 18 inches above 7000 feet. For Alpine and Mono counties...6 to 12 inches possible above 7000 feet with up to 18 inches near the crest, and up to 4 inches possible along and east of US-395.
To start the week off, a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect until 7:00 p.m. Monday.

10:25PM Update: US50 at the scene of the earlier three-vehicle collision has reopened. No other details are available at this time.
7:30PM Update: There’s no estimated time for reopening the roadway at this time. Closure is estimated to last another several hours according to the NHP. Avoid the area.
Some winter weather returns to South Lake Tahoe to start off the week ahead
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/07/2021 - 5:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a relatively quiet Sunday, an active weather pattern will resume on Monday with periods of snow and gusty winds through Wednesday and possibly Thursday. While the National Weather Service in Reno (NWS Reno) is not anticipating any strong storms, these storms will be on the colder side, which could bring snow to lower elevations.
A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 8. Expect winds from the southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on the lake will be 3 to 5 feet.

These mussels are regarded as one of the most destructive invasive species in North America and an infestation of them could significantly impact the Tahoe region.

County releases results for Meyers Commercial Cannabis businesses

After receiving input from the County’s Sheriff’s Department, Air Quality Management District and the Planning Division, the Planning and Building Department announced the finalist from a short list of three applications.
Incline Village Transportation Town Hall listening session on planned mobility hub

Four town hall meetings have been held over the past few weeks and a listening session will be held on Friday, March 5 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Town Hall styled forums with community discussion periods were led by the Tahoe Transportation District, Washoe County, and the Incline Village/Crystal Bay Visitor's Bureau.

U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe Safety Project virtual public open house
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/04/2021 - 4:26pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is holding virtual open house for the new U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe Safety Project slated for the 2024/25 building seasons. The purpose of this $16.8 million project is to reduce vehicle collisions with those who walk and bicycle within this segment of Highway 50 (referred to as Lake Tahoe Boulevard within city limits) from the junction of the Highway 89 “Y” to Pioneer Trail.
There were 41 reported collisions, including six fatalities, between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019. Most of those collisions occurred at night, Caltrans said.
2022 Ground breaking planned for new South Lake Tahoe aquatics and recreation center
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/04/2021 - 11:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Final plans on the new South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center are getting close and City Council was given a presentation on the status and timeline during it meeting Tuesday.
Planners and architects involved in the project have been meeting with stakeholders and the community, asking what is important to them to have in the new 60,000-square-foot hub of activity. More outreach is planned before final plans are created before the end of 2021.
The Loft at Heavenly Village reopens theater and restaurant

Both have been closed due to COVID conditions and regulations and they will reopen with the theater and restaurant with reduced occupancy to allow for CDC and State recommended guidelines.
The Loft wants "to assure our guests the utmost in safety, comfort, and confidence. This includes social distancing, protective equipment and health checks for all our entire team, as well as cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting protocols."
Unsettled and colder weather pattern for Lake Tahoe likely for much of next week

Anyone with trans-Sierra travel plans during this timeframe should keep close tabs on the forecast in the days to come.

City Council approves new South Lake Tahoe Strategic Plan

The new plan includes 101 action items and Council and staff plan to tackle 21 of them in the next year and have already started on "six or seven" of them.

and kicked off the month of March as Reading Month. Zephyr Cove Elementary School is celebrating Reading Month with two fundraisers to help raise vital funds for the school. This past year has been challenging for schools in unprecedented ways, and fundraising has become even more challenging with the continued limits on traditional in-person gatherings.
Report analyzes cost and log supply for biomass facility north of Lake Tahoe

The report, titled the “Biomass Fuel and Log Supply Availability and Cost Assessment for a Biomass Power Facility and Sawmill Collocated at Loyalton, California,” shows a more than adequate supply of resources for a currently non-operating 18MW biomass power facility that can play an important role in the restoration of Tahoe’s forest.

South Lake Tahoe vaccine clinic Thursday for those 65+

From 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seniors can receive the first dose of the vaccine.
COVID-19 vaccine is currently being prioritized for the following people:
* Eligible individuals in Phase 1B
* Eligible individuals in Phase 1A

Students to return to South Tahoe High School and Mt. Tallac High on March 8

While younger students have been able to start attending in-person school on a hybrid schedule, South Tahoe High School (STHS) and Mt. Tallac High School students have not been able to, that is, until now.
With El Dorado County moving into the Red Tier with less restrictions, the high schools can now reopen and start seeing students with in-person learning on March 8.
Sierra snowpack measured at 86% of average at Phillips Station, 65% at Mt. Rose
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/02/2021 - 1:26pmPHILLIPS STATION - The third manual snow survey of the season at Phillips Station west of Lake Tahoe was conducted today by the Department of Water Resources (DWR). At the location 56 inches of snow was recorded with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 21 inches which is 86 percent of average for this date. The Phillips Station measuring spot is at the intersection of US50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road.
The statewide network of snow measurement showed California at 61 percent of average as of this morning.
South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County move to less restrictive Red Tier
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/02/2021 - 12:05pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Good news on the COVID-19 front - South Lake Tahoe and the rest of El Dorado County can change tiers in the state's reopening plans, thus loosening restrictions on local businesses and activities.
“Starting tomorrow, indoor dining is allowed at 25 percent capacity, gyms can open at 10 percent capacity, retailers can open at 50 percent capacity, and movie theaters can reopen at 25 percent capacity, among other things," said Carla Hass, the county's communications director.
The businesses can reopen with capacity limits and mandatory masks.

Seasonal flu activity remains low with COVID-19 precautions

Schools have been closed as have other businesses. These situations and habits are being credited for low seasonal influenza activity in the U.S. along with more people getting the flu shots.

Lake Tahoe Basin won't see March coming "in like a lion"
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/28/2021 - 5:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - March is known as a very changeable month, one where it can be warm and spring-like one week, and having record snowfall another. Weather folklore said, "If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb."
That won't be true in 2021 as dry conditions with above average daytime temperatures prevailing for much of this week. The next chance for rain or snow may arrive by this upcoming weekend, but a significant storm is unlikely.
Climate change webinar on regional GHG emissions Friday

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is addressing the threats of climate change by hosting a webinar on Friday, March 5 on the region’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the agency said today.
TRPA, Sierra Business Council, and Spatial Informatics Group will host the informational webinar about an updated GHG emission inventory for the Tahoe Basin. The webinar will include an overview of climate change, the role of forests in climate change, and next steps for addressing climate change in Tahoe, according to TRPA.

Virtual webinar to discuss improvement of e-bike trail access in Lake Tahoe Basin

A virtual open house will be held for those interested in learning more about the Forest Service's plans to improve electric bicycle (e-bike) access and trail system sustainability in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
On Wednesday, March 10, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will hold the webinar from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
LTBMU is developing a plan to improve e-bike access and trail system sustainability on National Forest System (NFS) lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

An all-volunteer unit within the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, DCSAR responds to assistance calls for lost or injured persons in the mountains, desert, backcountry, and waterways of Douglas and surrounding counties. DCSAR also provides emergency assistance during natural disasters and large public safety emergencies.
Tom and Cheryl Millham celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

This Saturday, February 27, 2021, Tom and Cheryl Millham will be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. It was exactly 50 years ago, also on a Saturday, that the couple was wed in Temple City, California. The minister who performed the ceremony was Cheryl’s brother, Dr. Robert Bender.
