Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/22/2023 - 11:26pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A 37-year-old man from Cameron Park, Kevin Van Streefkerk, has been arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) after an investigation by detectives into the death of the man's 5 1/2-week-old infant.
According to EDSO reports, detectives were called to investigate a report of physical abuse against an infant. As a result of the abuse, the infant sustained numerous injuries and was taken to a hospital in critical condition on Saturday. Sadly, the infant succumbed to the trauma and passed away while in the hospital on June 18, 2023.

City awards over $400k in cannabis revenue grants to South Lake Tahoe nonprofits
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/22/2023 - 9:56pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their meeting Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted on the applicants for the next round of cannabis revenues grants. In 2022, $399,650 was given to 14 local nonprofits and agencies, and for 2023, 15 have been chosen to receive $408,625.
The grants provide funding opportunities to the local public agencies and nonprofit organizations with programs or projects designed to mitigate potential negative impacts of the cannabis industry in South Lake Tahoe and promote the priorities of the City Strategic Plan.

South Lake Tahoe Shootout brings teams from California, Utah, and Nevada
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/22/2023 - 8:48amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Action gets started on the basketball courts at South Tahoe High School (STHS) on Thursday, with ten teams from three states meeting for the four-day South Lake Tahoe Shootout.
On Thursday, in the school's Blue Gym, Highland 1 and 2, Woodcreek, Stagg, and Skyline 1 and 2 are meeting up starting at 4 p.m.
Friday's action is in both the Blue Gym and Gold Gym from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The South Lake Tahoe teams start action Friday with the first shootout.

500 acre prescribed burn planned in Tahoe National Forest
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/21/2023 - 6:01amTahoe National Forest, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, plans to prescribed burn up to 500 acres near French Meadows Reservoir, approximately 36 miles northeast of Foresthill, west of Lake Tahoe. Dependent on environmental conditions, the burn is planned to start June 21 and may last up to two weeks.
After ignitions, Tahoe National Forest fire staff will patrol and monitor the area 24 hours a day until the fire is determined out.

South Tahoe High Volleyball Team to hold 2-day Super Spikers skills clinic

Instruction will be given by South Tahoe High School (STHS) players and coaches and the clinic is open to all levels, both boys and girls, ages 8-13.
The clinic is being held as a fundraiser for the STHS team. The cost for both days is $100 per player.
The clinic is being held in the STHS Blue and Gold gyms from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day, with a scrimmage from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bob “Mendi” Mendizabal; son, Greg (Jenny) and granddaughters Kira and Alexa, of Kenmore, Wash.; daughter Anisa (Karen) of Trumansburg, NY; brother William “Bud” (Susan) of Boise, Idaho; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces/nephews. CalFIRE responds to small vegetation fire at Vikingsholm
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/20/2023 - 3:43pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a quick response Tuesday to a reported vegetation fire at Vikingsholm on SR89 north of South Lake Tahoe. An emergency call was received at 1:41 p.m. for a "small vegetation fire."
Upon arrival, fire teams were able to extinguish the 2 ft x 2 ft fire.
CalFIRE responded since it is on California State Parks land. With the winds at Lake Tahoe Tuesday, any small fire is a threat so caution is urged.
The cause of the fire at this time is undetermined.

One person air lifted to hospital after crashing vehicle in front of Harveys Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/20/2023 - 2:44pmSTATELINE, Nev. - One person was critically injured Monday morning after the vehicle they were driving left the roadway in front of Harveys Lake Tahoe crashing into the fence along US50.
At 10:25 a.m. on June 19, a red Kia Forte departed its westbound travel lane on US50, crashing into the fence line in front of the casino, and sticking it twice before returning to the roadway where it struck a vehicle stopped at the red light, causing that vehicle to then strike the car in front of it.

The two-time Super Bowl champion signal-caller played in the first 27 tournaments until post-football career injuries sidelined him in 2017.
Editorial: Speed limits around South Lake Tahoe need to remain the same

If a "reasonable person" will drive over the speed limit 85 percent of the time during a speed study, then the speed limit may be raised.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Nevada Beach Pavilion. The beach is located on Elks Point Road. There is a $10 parking fee for the state beach.
South Lake Tahoe to see a drop in temperature to start off the week - First day of summer Wednesday

A cold front will bring gusty winds and a temperature drop - something local residents have seen perhaps too much of over the last seven months.
At least no snow is in the forecast, but there will be sub-freezing temperatures before summer officially starts on Wednesday. By midweek onward more typical late-day winds return along with a rebound to milder temperatures.
Dry and sunny forecast, and it looks like the "warm" part will come at the end of the week.

He was recognized at a ceremony held on June 3 at Moose International Headquarters, located just west of Chicago in Mooseheart, Illinois. There were also 117 additional Moose members from the United States, Canada, and England who received the Pilgrim Degree. Moose Pilgrims from all three nations gathered at Mooseheart to attend the celebration.

City expands days of operation for El Dorado Beach boat ramp
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/15/2023 - 8:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Low water levels at Lake Tahoe the last two years caused the closure of the boat ramp at El Dorado Beach by this time of year, but the City of South Lake Tahoe announced they will expand its hours starting Friday, June 16.
The ramp will be open Fridays through Mondays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and it will be closed on July 4.
Fees for the boat ramp are collected on-site and can be paid via debit or credit card. The 2023 summer boat ramp fees are as follows:

El Dorado County Supervisors unanimously approves a $1 billion spending plan

The total recommended budget for all governmental funds for Fiscal Year 2023-24 is $1.01 billion, which is $25.7 million (three percent) more than last year’s budget of $986.8 million. These totals reflect all governmental funds, including special revenue funds. They exclude special districts and proprietary funds.
Douglas County officially appoints Emergency Management Director Kara Easton
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/15/2023 - 2:46pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County’s Emergency Management Director Kara Easton was officially appointed at the Board of County Commissioner’s meeting on June 15, 2023. Although Easton started her employment with Douglas County on May 8, the County was still under contract for Emergency Management services with East Fork Fire District through June 30, 2023. She assumes her official position on July 1, 2023.
New South Lake Tahoe housing project planned address community needs with environmental contributions
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/15/2023 - 2:32pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A proposed new "achievable" workforce housing project called Alpine Estates is being planned for South Lake Tahoe adjacent to The Crossing at Tahoe Valley. The developer is Alpine Corp. and the planner is Exline & Company.
There will be a public meeting to unveil the project on June 28, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. held in the City of South Lake Tahoe Council Chamber.

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band is a renowned musical group led by the legendary drummer Ringo Starr. Formed in 1989, the band features a rotating lineup of accomplished musicians from various backgrounds, each bringing their unique talent to the stage. On Aug. 3, 1992, Ringo and his All Starr Band played at the Harveys Outdoor Amphitheater, the venue's name at the time.

On her journey, the Unicorn encounters several entertaining characters including the witch, Mommy Fortuna; an evil, Monster Bird; a fun-loving Butterfly; a wonderful maidservant, Molly Grue, and the hilarious would-be Magician, Schmendrick who turns the Unicorn into a Princess to help disguise her and save her from the Red Bull.
