Fire Tuesday near Fallen Leaf Lake Dam under investigation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday morning, the USFS Tallac Hotshots and Engine 342 responded to a small wildfire burning near the Fallen Leaf Lake dam at Taylor Creek.
The initial response to the 11:25 a.m. call came from CalFIRE and once determined the fire was on national forest land, the USFS engine crew and hotshots finished up.
What is being called the Leaf Fire is fully contained but the public is asked to please avoid the area. Crews are on the scene mopping it up.
At this time the cause of the 20ft x 30ft fire is under investigation.
Homicide and attempted carjacking suspects arrested in Douglas County

MINDEN, Nev. – Two men were arrested Tuesday morning by deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) on multiple charges.
On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at about 6:27 a.m., DCSO deputies responded to the Smith’s Food and Drug gas station in Gardnerville for a report of an attempted carjacking. Two subjects, one of whom allegedly was pointing a firearm, attempted to take a vehicle, which was being fueled at Smith's. The suspects were not able to start the vehicle and fled on foot.
Deputies found the suspects in a neighborhood east of Smiths and they were taken into custody.
El Dorado County Search and Rescue calls down - are people safer or technology better?

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has seen a steady decrease in some calls for search and rescue (SAR) of recreationists in the county since 2017, could it be a safer public or better technology that has caused this? Or, are there fewer people getting into the backcountry?
Prior to 2017, there were 120 or more SAR calls a year, with 123 in 2017, then an average of 77 incidents per year since then.

The club is open to all STMS students and its goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle by providing safe, high-energy alternative activities. When I was growing up my friends and I would play Monopoly. I always sweated as I had to avoid landing on Park Place or Boardwalk. If lucky, I could pass Go and collect $200. That game taught us about the trials and tribulations and realities of business.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Every year the public is warned about the dangers of cold water shock, but every year, people die in Lake Tahoe not due to a lack of swimming skill or hypothermia, but often due to cold water shock.
"The sudden lowering of skin temperature on immersion in cold water represents one of the most profound stimuli that the body can encounter," according to Golden and Tipton in Essentials of Sea Survival.
It is important for those on, and in, the lake to understand the phrase "1-10-1." This refers to the three critical phases of cold water immersion.
Meadows at Upper Truckee River and Trout Creek flooding, just as restoration projects wanted

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most of the meadows around South Lake Tahoe have had a lot of standing water over them this spring, and those surrounding Trout Creek and the Upper Truckee River have seen more water than they've experienced in years.
Both waterways went over their banks weeks ago, and it may be several weeks until water moves back into its normal flow pattern.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a chance for flooding from rain and runoff at Lake Tahoe on Monday afternoon, enough for a Flood Watch May 29 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Daily thunderstorm potential remains with the Sierra and Western Nevada through the week, with up to 70 percent chances through Memorial Day. The potential for storms decreases by mid to late week (up to 20 percent chance), but won`t completely disappear. Storms this week will be capable of heavy rain, lightning, gusty, erratic winds, and even small hail.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - As Lake Tahoe’s water level nears its maximum height from a record snowpack, agencies helping protect the region from aquatic invasive species (AIS) are preparing watercraft inspection stations and new equipment for paddlers for the season ahead.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) manage the nationally recognized boat inspection program to prevent the spread of AIS by ensuring all watercraft are Clean, Drained, and Dry before entering the waters of the Lake Tahoe Region.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the month of April, Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) volunteers hosted a booth at Flatstick Pub to raise money for the weekend food bag program. Flatstick donated $1 to the organization for every round of mini golf played and for every beer purchased all day on Sundays during the month. A total of $1,445 was raised during the month.

The parks will remain open until closing for the winter on September 31.

"Superwoman" Joanne Shope retires after 28 years with Christmas Cheer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At the age of 90, most people have already been enjoying several years of retirement, but that hasn't been the case for Joanne Shope of South Lake Tahoe.
Since 1995, Joanne has been a volunteer at Christmas Cheer, the last nine of those years as the non-profit's unpaid executive director.
Christmas Cheer is a local non-profit food pantry that provides monthly staples and perishable food to residents in need, along with clothing, shoes, toys, and household items.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) celebrated its mission, the community, and nonprofits at its 8th annual Grants Gala on May 24 at the 4-H Camp at Stateline.
With 25 nonprofits in attendance and over 100 members, TWCF celebrated all the amazing organizations, their uplifting stories, and the funding its members provided. The 13 nonprofits who received $100,000 collectively in 2022, presented their stories, while 12 other nonprofits were there to receive their funding for 2023.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The last time Justin Foskett and his wife Nikki opened a business it was the day COVID shut down businesses around Lake Tahoe. Even with that challenge, their Bare Roots Coffee Roasting Company in South Lake Tahoe has been going strong.
Now, they have opened a second local business, the Beach House on Lakeside Beach, and while it's been a hectic few weeks getting operations ready to go, things are off to a good start just in time for the holiday weekend.

I have a hit-and-miss relationship with a certain stylish Swedish carmaker. Volvos often offer understated, Bauhaus styling that looks modern without any effort, and lavishly luxurious interiors that can rival any other competing brand in their space. They're not without issue, though, with a majority of Volvos tested exhibiting wonky electronics that are unacceptably unreliable in 2023, such as doors not locking, center display lockups, maps freezing, and buzzing speakers. Luckily, this XC60 showed none of that, so I was able to enjoy at its full strength.
County officials urge extra care and caution around lakes and rivers after heavy winter snow

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County officials are advising residents and visitors to take extra precautions this year to prevent drowning in the area's rivers and lakes. They are moving faster and are much higher than normal and pose a great risk, and two men have already died in rapids this year, one in the American River and the other in the Truckee River.
As the weather warms up and more families head to rivers, lakes, and swimming pools, El Dorado County Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams, is advising residents to take extra precautions.

Spring is an active time for Tahoe bear cubs and yearlings

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – As temperatures start to warm and snow begins to melt, a new crop of bear cubs are emerging from winter dens with their mothers. Yearlings, which were born last year, are also on the move. Some are still with their mother bears, some are solo after separating before denning, and some may be showing signs of disease.
Cubs of the year, born around the beginning of February, are sticking close to their mothers, and learning survival skills in the wild to prepare them for living on their own in about one year.

TRPA accepting applications for pier allocation lottery at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – There are a limited number of pier allocations allowed every two years at Lake Tahoe, and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) will be accepting lottery entries for those allocations between June 1 and June 30, 2023.
The 2018 Shoreline Plan lifted a longstanding moratorium on new shorezone structures and placed a cap on the number of private piers and buoys allowed at Lake Tahoe. A maximum of 128 private piers and 1,486 private moorings will be allowed along the shore of Lake Tahoe, with allotments awarded through periodic lotteries until the cap is met.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office warns of rural lot sale scam

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an ongoing scam in the area. An unknown subject has sold or attempted to sell rural lots without the permission of the actual owner. The subject has contacted real estate companies claiming to be the owner of a rural, undeveloped lot. The subject then asks the real estate company to list the property for sale.
Some indicators of potentially fraudulent activity appear to be:
1. “Seller” only communicates via email.
2. “Seller’s” address has “changed” recently, possibly to a foreign country.
Free Take It Slow, Tahoe traffic safety yard signs available from Take Care Tahoe

Summer in Tahoe means warmer weather and wildflowers, but it also means more cars driving around the lake. Take Care Tahoe is taking on traffic safety by distributing free yard signs to the public that encourage drivers to “Take it Slow, Tahoe.”
The message of “Take it Slow, Tahoe” captures the attention of drivers and creatively incorporates artwork to remind them why driving safely is so important: to protect people and animals. The signs are part of the larger campaign that launched in the summer of 2022.

State Route 88 was closed Monday night between Picketts Junction and Crystal Springs East after a rapidly deteriorating roadway was discovered. There is no estimated time for the reopening of the closure according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Western Nevada College’s (WNC) return to a traditional commencement ceremony on Monday in Marv Teixeira Pavilion brought back familiar and wonderful traditions, providing graduates with the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends. The soothing sounds from the Sierra Highlanders’ bagpipes filled the arena. Speakers provided motivational messages from and their hearts and personal experiences. Performing arts students gracefully danced across the stage to the music of “Seize the Day” from the musical “Newsies.” The atmosphere was electric.
Mental health first aid event held at LTCC for Fire and EMS

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Mental Health First Aid for Fire and EMS (https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/population-focused-modules/fire-and-ems/) course was hosted by Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) on Friday, May 19. The class was offered for free to local firefighters and EMS personnel as well as LTCC students and family members of first responders. Twenty community members attended the event taught by Stephanie Carlson, a MHFA instructor from the Behavioral Health Division of El Dorado County Health & Human Services Agency.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A chance of thunderstorms hangs around South Lake Tahoe through the week ahead. There will be a decrease in chances on Monday and Tuesday, with chances increasing mid-late week. It will be overall cooler this week.
While the afternoon convection and cloud cover aren't what everyone has been waiting through the long winter for, they have been reducing snowmelt and resultant flows on some rivers.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Whittell High School girls' track and field team has brought back the State Champion trophy from the NIAA 1a State Track Championship in Henderson, Nev. Through 18 events, the young women collected 91 points with first-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and long jump.
Logan Robertson from the boys' team was a one-man show at state, coming home with three first-place finishes in the 800-, 1600-, and 3200-meter runs.

Meyers OMG Fun Run registration now open

The 7th annual OMG Fun Run will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Old Meyers Grade (OMG) in Meyers. Registration is now open for the fun event that raises funds for the Meyers Community Foundation.
Registration is open through June 4 at 8 p.m. Advance registration is $15 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under) and includes a free OMG t-shirt. Kids under 5 attend free (but do not receive a shirt). Registration on the day of the event is $20 for adults and $10 for children and will be held onsite at Old Meyers Grade from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
City of South Lake Tahoe sales tax report shows increase in 4th quarter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 4th quarter sales tax report for South Lake Tahoe shows receipts from October-December 2022 were above those of the prior year by 6.3 percent. Excluding reporting adjustments, receipts for the period were up 8.5 percent.
While many areas of the state saw a decline in dollars spent on transportation, the City had a healthy increase, according to its quarterly report from the finance department. The severe weather likely caused the increase in spending on construction materials and supplies sold by outlets in the business-industry group.
USFS beaches and campgrounds start to open around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Baldwin Beach and Pope Beach have opened for the season! With the heavy snow around Lake Tahoe melting quickly, staff has been able to get into U.S. Forest Service areas to get them open for the season.
Both Baldwin and Pope are open from 8 a.m.-8 p,m. Season passes are available for $95.00, and the day-use fee is $10.00 a day. Please remember no dogs or charcoal grills are allowed at these beaches. Propane grills are allowed.

Music in the Park returns to Tahoe Paradise this summer

MEYERS, Calif. - Music in the Park returns this summer with one concert a month in Tahoe Paradise Park.
The free concerts are hosted by Meyers Mountain Market with help from donations and sponsors. They start at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.

Chautauqua performances of James and Agnes Reed and Snowshoe Thompson in Valhalla Boathouse Theatre

Chautauqua performances by David and Gayle Woodruff are taking place over the holiday weekend in the Valhalla Boathouse Theatre at the Tallac Historic Site. Both performances are free.
LTUSD English learner services progress report

Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) English Learner Services is excited to share a progress report on this year’s work in support of students learning English. This work continues as part of our districtwide systems for serving multilingual learners and in response to input from students, staff, families, and our community.
Accomplishments this year include:
Protected time at every districtwide for students to receive targeted instruction developing their academic English; a secondary focus on removing barriers to enrollment in honors and advanced placement work.
South Tahoe High Baseball team ends 2023 season with 2nd place in state, 1st as academic champion

UPDATE 4:30 PM: It wasn't the finish they were hoping for, but the South Tahoe High Vikings ended their 2023 season with an impressive second place in the NIAA 3a State Tournament.
The Vikings ended up playing 11 games in the last nine days between the northern regionals and the state tournament. Their opponent in the final game was Pahrump Valley, the number one seed from the south. South Tahoe fell 0-3.
Even though Pahrump Valley won the final, South Tahoe outscored them in two games 8-5. Temperatures have been in the 90s in Henderson, the site of the tournament.
