South Tahoe High graduate creates BlueZone Sports mural in Reno

RENO, Nev. - South Lake Tahoe native, and South Tahoe High School grad, Rowena Piñero, is being celebrated for her mural on the new BlueZone Sports building in mid-town Reno at the Reno Public Market.
Rowena graduated from South Tahoe High in 2014 and Truckee Meadows Community College in 2022 from their design program, and has been working as a full-time designer with Design on Edge in Reno since graduation.

The Forest Health Community Working Group invites the public to discuss their efforts in restoring Alpine County after fire, flood, and mudslides.
The meeting will be held at Turtle Rock Park Community Center in Markleeville on June 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Discuss post-fire restorations, restoration timelines, upcoming field trips, updates, as well as question and answer period with project managers.
There will be state and private forestry groups, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Alpine Fire Safe Council present.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As anyone who has gardened at high elevation knows there are challenges that lower elevation residents don't experience. No matter the hard work and time spent tending to flowers, shrubs, and trees, the rewards are great (even if it is a one-inch potato!
I haven't grown vegetables for too long, and it was the UC Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe and Slow Grow Tahoe people that got me hooked about five years ago. My annual "crops" have been potatoes, beans, and peas. This year I'm adding sunchokes, leafy greens, onions, and leeks.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee is holding a free vaccine and microchip clinic in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, June 13 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This free clinic is for pets from Glenbrook to Meyers and is not limited to South Lake Tahoe residents. Bring your dog on a leash and cat in a carrier.

Tahoe Swim Team has strong showing in Truckee

The Tahoe Swim Team traveled to Truckee this past weekend for the "Beat the Heat" meet hosted by Tahoe Truckee Swim Team. Swimmers from South Lake Tahoe participated in events new to them and personal records were broken. The Tahoe Swim Team coaches said they are extremely proud of how dedicated swimmers are to improving their skills and times.
Meet participants were Madden Casto, Maia Edmonds, Mia Vasquez Valdez, Izzy Boles, Julia Buntin, and Rowan Edmonds.

June is National Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month. El Dorado County's Adult Protective Services (APS) Program, part of the County's Health and Human Services Agency, is making a special effort to reach out to community members during this month.
“We want everyone to recognize the signs of elder and dependent adult abuse, to take steps to prevent it, and to make a report if they have concerns,” said Laura Walny, APS program manager.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been one year since the community suddenly lost "Miss Marcia," and her spirit, her guidance, and her love are missed every day.
When Marcia Sarosik passed away on June 5, 2022, the whole community was shaken, not just the dancers and their families from her studio, but also teachers, the schools, her neighbors, and all other nonprofits in South Lake Tahoe (and the list goes on). Marcia's husband Dennis and children Lisa and Evan lost their beacon.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most of those in South Lake Tahoe and the rest of the South Shore are dog-loving people, and enjoy taking their dogs on walks, many going into the meadows and forests to run them off-leash.
South Lake Tahoe dog owners have been on guard for weeks because of online rumors suggesting dogs are being poisoned by chicken left out to kill coyotes. This message has blown up and spread through the dog community, as one can imagine.

With summer arriving in Tahoe, residents and visitors are looking forward to spending time on the Lake’s sparkling blue waters. To protect that treasured experience and the Lake’s water quality, public, private, and nonprofit partners have come together to inform recreators about the threat of aquatic invasive species – harmful, non-native plants and animals. Without a watchful eye and preventative action, invasive species could proliferate, turning those blue waters a murky green.
South Tahoe High Sober Grad Night needs financial help from the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 31st annual South Tahoe High Sober Grad Night will be held for graduates on June 16. The committee is seeking donations from the community to make it a night to remember for the Class of 2023.
Each year the Safe and Sober Grad Night Organization, a local 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, run by a dedicated team of local volunteers, fundraises and coordinates the logistics for this one-of-a-kind event.
An in-kind Vail Resorts grant supports the event every year. This year it will be held at Heavenly’s California Base Lodge from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two brothers who grew up in South Lake Tahoe are bringing an elevated twist on bar cuisine at their new gastropub, The Woods Lake Tahoe.
Dillon and Connor McKeen are putting the finishing touches on the remodel of the old Pick 6 at 3115 Harrison Avenue. This week their chef, Chris Ibarra, unveiled the dishes he created for The Woods, showing them to the new staff. Dish after dish came out of the kitchen Friday, with staff savoring every bite as they heard the chef's story about each one.
74th Wagon Train moves through South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A reenactment of the wagon trains which once carried gold-seekers and those in search of a better life and free land started off at Lake Tahoe Sunday. The week-long history lesson will be traveling on US50 to Placerville, just like the annual event has since 1949.
The wagons, horses, and riders took a lunch break on Sunday in front of the Lake Tahoe Historical Museum, Art League, and CalOES ambulance station. The public enjoyed chatting with the participants, petting the horses, and learning more about the wagon train.

CalTrans proposing speed limit increases in South Lake Tahoe, public hearing June 20

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been 11 years since the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) raised the speed limits on US50 by 5 mph in the city limit of South Lake Tahoe, and now they are considering another 5 mph increase on both US50 and SR89.
Caltrans is required to have a public hearing when they propose speed limit changes, and the one for this proposal will be during the June 20, 2023, City Council meeting, starting at 5:30 p.m.
The proposed changes:
US50 north of Kyburz Avenue to north of C Street - increase the speed limit from 45 mph to 50 mph

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Wildlife Wednesdays return this summer at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC)'s South Lake Tahoe facility.
On Wednesday, June 7, Denise Upton, LTWC wildlife education coordinator, will host a 1-hour presentation and Q&A about porcupines, and LTWC ambassador animal, Porky, a North American Porcupine will make a guest appearance.

Two injured in US50 crash at Lake Tahoe near Glenbrook

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A two-vehicle collision at Lake Tahoe on Thursday morning left two people with minor injuries and traffic tied up for a couple of hours until the crash site could be cleared.
The Nevada State Police Highway Division responded to the crash near Mile Marker 8 in Douglas County just after 11 a.m. on June 1.

Zephyr Cove men's tennis team qualifies for USTA National Championships

For the first time, a Men’s 4.5 team from Zephyr Cove Tennis Club has qualified for the United States Tennis Association’s National Championships, to be held October 14-16, 2023 in Tucson, Arizona.
The men's 4.5 over 40 team qualified by capturing the highly competitive Northern California Sectional Championship held May 19-21 at Gold River Racquet Club in Sacramento.
Local team members include Ryan Johnston, Chris Kiser, Ross Rittiman, and Bob Beutenmiller.

Fundraiser started after five children hit by van as they crossed a Pollock Pines road in a crosswalk

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Five children were hit by a vehicle as they were at a crosswalk on Pony Express Trail in Pollock Pines on Wednesday. The children were students at Pine Top Montessori, a school that serves children ages 3-6 and were on their way to a park during a field trip when hit.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), four of the children were airlifted to hospitals, and another was transported by ambulance.
Missing man located along Carson River after law enforcement finds abandoned car

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - A man was rescued from along the Carson River on Wednesday after being listed as a missing person in Alpine County.
On Sunday, May 28, a vehicle was located abandoned along SR88 in Woodfords Canyon. After law enforcement contacted the registered owner of the vehicle it was determined the vehicle had been taken without permission, and that the owner's adult son was also missing.

Fire in South Tahoe Refuse transport truck possibly caused by hot ashes or charcoal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quick action by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) kept an overnight fire in a transport truck at South Tahoe Refuse (STR) contained to just one vehicle.
The emergency fire call was received by dispatch at 12:28 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31. The truck used to transport refuse to a landfill had caught on fire and flames were escaping the truck. According to STR President Jeff Tillman, the firefighters were able to get the truck moved to a safe location as they extinguished the flames. He said the burned truck is a total loss.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - TOYS FOR TOTS is thinking about Christmas already as they know they will have a lot of requests for gifts from Santa this year. To help with their efforts the Flight Deck restaurant in South Lake Tahoe is holding a fundraiser on June 6, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Bring the attached flyer with you to the restaurant and 20 percent of the food sales will be donated to Toys For Tots.
The Flight Deck is located at the Lake Tahoe Airport, 1901 Lisa Maloff Way, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) is hosting a soccer camp this summer for children, both Club members and nonmembers, from July 10 to July 13. The coaching staff is composed of professional coaches who have played professional soccer.
