EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Commission on Aging currently has one membership vacancy and is accepting applications from interested residents of the county. The Commission strives to attain a balanced geographic representation and applicants are sought from all areas of the county, including South Lake Tahoe. Preference is given to individuals aged 60 years and older.

Among high schoolers in the 12th grade, close to 2 in 10 reported using prescription medicine without a prescription. Two-thirds (66 percent) of teens who report the abuse of prescription pain relievers are getting them from friends, family members, and acquaintances. While some teens abuse medicine to party and get high, many are using medicine to manage stress or regulate their lives.
Operation Save Lake Tahoe - $60M plan to bring in permanent firefighting helicopters

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There is no firefighting or rescue helicopter assigned to the Lake Tahoe region on a dedicated, permanent basis, and Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Scott Lindgren is trying to change that.
Lindgren has created "Operation - Save the Tahoe Basin" to bring the valuable tool to not only the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe but to all of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.
It will not come cheaply and he estimates he will need $60M to create a helicopter base with two helicopters.

Mama and her cubs were spotted in a yard off Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe. She started to cross the street, then thought better of it. It’s a good reminder to slow down and watch for our furry neighbors when driving.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A strong late-season winter storm arrives on Monday, making it feel like January and not April. Plan on a round of very strong and potentially damaging winds on Monday along with Sierra travel impacts due to snow Monday into Monday night. Much colder weather persists for most of this week with below-freezing temperatures starting Monday night.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory to be in effect from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 34-year-old man suffered serious injuries after being hit by a taxi on Saturday night in South Lake Tahoe
At 9:39 p.m., emergency personnel responded to calls of a vehicle versus pedestrian incident near the old Chevy's restaurant on Lake Tahoe Blvd., just east of Ski Run Blvd.
Upon arrival, the first responders found the man in the street. The road was blocked off as he was transported to Barton Hospital and officers from South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) began their investigation.

National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week is April 10 through 16, 2022. This is a time to recognize the many contributions of Animal Services officers, shelter and office staff, and Animal Services volunteers in El Dorado County.

Only residents or property owners in the Lake Tahoe region of the unincorporated County may apply for the Meyers Area Council. The other two commission openings can be filled by those living in the incorporated area (South Lake Tahoe city limits).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – As snow is melting off the trails and the days are getting warmer, for the most part, many recreationists are ready to get outside on foot and on bikes. One of those ways to enjoy the outside at Lake Tahoe that is gaining in popularity is on an electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike. Where one can take an e-bike is often confusing.
E-bikes are seen on both motorized and non-motorized trails around Lake Tahoe, and the US Forest Service is creating the rules for the lands they manage.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The group of volunteers behind the creation and construction of the Ski Run Community Park has been busy designing and fundraising for the park. Construction is slated to start this spring with completion in the fall.
To kick things off a groundbreaking ceremony and block party will be held on Sunday, May 1 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Things are getting close to meeting fundraising goals and some matching grant opportunities are available to take the project to the finish line.

Milestone reached on $55.4M US50 project at Camino

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – A key component of the US50 Camino Safety Project has been completed, allowing work to proceed on the remaining elements of the $55.4 million project, which includes $3.4 million in funding from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
The replacement of two El Dorado Irrigation District water lines clears the way for the contractor, Security Paving Inc., to move ahead with local road improvements, which include a roundabout connecting to the new Pondorado Undercrossing being built.
Redistricting in California changes boundaries in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The 2020 Census shows El Dorado County grew by about 10,000 residents with the largest percentage of those new residents on the western slope, and that will be changing the supervisorial boundaries.
The population estimate in 2020 was 191,185, and since then another 2,036 people have moved into El Dorado County.
Every decade the census is completed and the boundaries of elected officials from supervisors up to congress members are adjusted if necessary to match the population at the time.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted many community events, the Parade being one of them, which resulted in a two-year hiatus. In addition to bringing back the parade this year, the City has created a theme for the event: “Tahoe Strong, A Salute to Our Heroes.”
Also new this year will be the 'Best of the Parade' awards. A judging panel will score all parade entries, and trophies will be awarded for the following categories:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Lake Tahoe Community College was ranked as the number one best community college in California according to a compiled list from Stacker that uses rankings from Niche, a company that ranks schools nationally from K-12 to graduate schools. In addition to coming in on top in California’s community college system, LTCC was also ranked Number 12 in the entire country for best community college.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their April 5 meeting, City Council approved several agenda items including a required military equipment use policy, authorized up to $205,230 for the city-owned parking garage, amendments to the trash ordinance, and approved LED lighting retrofits for walkway lighting through parts of the US50 corridor (all but Caltrans lights).

Old Bart's Tahoe Apartments in South Lake Tahoe gets clean bill of health under new ownership

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The new owners of what was called Bart's Tahoe Apartments in South Lake Tahoe finalized the purchase of the complex in December 2021 for $6M and have been working diligently with the City in correcting the long list of problems that had plagued the property located at 1224 Ski Run Blvd.
They have now passed the South Lake Tahoe Multi-Family Dwelling and Inspection Program and earned a clean bill of health along with a certificate of compliance.
Mt. Rose snowpack fares better than the California slopes: 70% of average

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Mt. Rose Ski Area snowpack was measured Monday, showing a snow depth of 55", 24.2" water content, and 70 percent of the April 4 median, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service of
Nevada (NRCS). Jeff Anderson, NRCS hydrologist, was at Mt. Rose to conduct the manual monthly measurement.
“We’ve already lost about a third of the snow this year at our SNOTEL sites,” said Anderson.

Suspect arrested after car chase starting at Lake Tahoe ends with a home owner detaining him at gunpoint

A 30-year-old man from Elk Grove, Calif. has been arrested on several charges after leading law enforcement on a chase from US50 near Cave Rock through Carson City and into Reno.
At 10:00 p.m. on April 3, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office attempted a traffic stop on a black Dodge Ram truck near Cave Rock. The driver of the vehicle fled from deputies and proceeded over Spooner Summit into Carson City.
Living Snow Project: TERC presentation on understanding pink snow and life in the snowpack

The Living Snow Project (LSP), with the help of the outdoor recreation community, is building the largest database of pink snow microbiome biodiversity in the world. Pink snow, sometimes called watermelon snow, is a diverse group of microorganisms that are adapted to live in snow and are dominated by pink-colored algae. The snow algae can influence snowmelt rates and offer insight into life in extreme environments.
The project will be discussed at a UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) virtual presentation on Thursday, April 14 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office unveils 2022 autism vehicle

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. - In honor of Autism Awareness Month, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped one of its vehicles with colored puzzle pieces. This is the third year the department has done this as a way of inviting children and adults with autism to meet police officers in a casual setting and to encourage caretakers of those on the spectrum to sign up for the Autism Recognition Alert Program.
Tahoe Swim Club takes 15 to Reno meet; Accepting more interested swimmers

The Tahoe Swim Club was well represented in Reno at the recent Northern Nevada Age Group Open in Reno. They took fifteen swimmers to the meet and for many of them, it was their very first meet.
Aged 7-14, the local swimmers have been working hard at practice while enjoying being part of the team.
The Tahoe Swim Club had a strong showing and is looking forward to upcoming meets this spring and summer.

Gaming Control Board: Nevada casino win up 44% from 2021; South Shore only region with a drop

Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,113,148,010 for the month of February 2022, a gain of 44.10 percent over the same period in 2021. The South Shore Lake Tahoe casino's win was down 3.93 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $19,672,671, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report. This was the second consecutive month for the South Shore to be down slightly from the previous year's figures and was the only region in the state to see a decrease in the win.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Lake Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno for Monday, April 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. West winds are expected from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe are from 2 to 4 feet.
There will be mild temperatures to start off the week, according to NWS Reno. Any rain chances will be limited to far northern areas towards the Oregon border. Much warmer temperatures are expected on Thursday and Friday with a tie of record high temperatures possible, then cooling over next weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Learn more about Liberty Assistance Programs at a South Lake Tahoe information event on Wednesday, April 13 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be held at Bijou Woods, 3421 Spruce Ave., South Lake Tahoe.
Liberty staff will be present to discuss enrollment and answer questions related to the California Alternative Rates for Energy (CARE) program, Energy Savings Assistance Program (ESAP), residential and commercial energy audits, Access and Functional Needs identification, and the Medical Baseline Allowance program.
$100,000 raised in 20 minutes at Chase International meeting for Operation Save the Tahoe Basin

What started as an annual company meeting for Chase International turned into an unprecedented 20-minute event that raised $100,000 to support “Operation Save the Tahoe Basin” fundraising project to purchase a Fire Rescue Helicopter. Before the meeting on March 23, Chase International representatives and EKN Development Group, developers of the former Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay, Nevada, spearheaded the idea before their annual meeting.
