Whittell High girls win NIAA 1a Track and Field Championship, Robertson wins 3 trophies for boys' team

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Whittell High School girls' track and field team has brought back the State Champion trophy from the NIAA 1a State Track Championship in Henderson, Nev. Through 18 events, the young women collected 91 points with first-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and long jump.

Logan Robertson from the boys' team was a one-man show at state, coming home with three first-place finishes in the 800-, 1600-, and 3200-meter runs.

Meyers OMG Fun Run registration now open

The 7th annual OMG Fun Run will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Old Meyers Grade (OMG) in Meyers. Registration is now open for the fun event that raises funds for the Meyers Community Foundation.

Registration is open through June 4 at 8 p.m. Advance registration is $15 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under) and includes a free OMG t-shirt. Kids under 5 attend free (but do not receive a shirt). Registration on the day of the event is $20 for adults and $10 for children and will be held onsite at Old Meyers Grade from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

City of South Lake Tahoe sales tax report shows increase in 4th quarter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 4th quarter sales tax report for South Lake Tahoe shows receipts from October-December 2022 were above those of the prior year by 6.3 percent. Excluding reporting adjustments, receipts for the period were up 8.5 percent.

While many areas of the state saw a decline in dollars spent on transportation, the City had a healthy increase, according to its quarterly report from the finance department. The severe weather likely caused the increase in spending on construction materials and supplies sold by outlets in the business-industry group.

USFS beaches and campgrounds start to open around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Baldwin Beach and Pope Beach have opened for the season! With the heavy snow around Lake Tahoe melting quickly, staff has been able to get into U.S. Forest Service areas to get them open for the season.

Both Baldwin and Pope are open from 8 a.m.-8 p,m. Season passes are available for $95.00, and the day-use fee is $10.00 a day. Please remember no dogs or charcoal grills are allowed at these beaches. Propane grills are allowed.

Music in the Park returns to Tahoe Paradise this summer

LTUSD English learner services progress report

Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) English Learner Services is excited to share a progress report on this year’s work in support of students learning English. This work continues as part of our districtwide systems for serving multilingual learners and in response to input from students, staff, families, and our community.

Accomplishments this year include:

Protected time at every districtwide for students to receive targeted instruction developing their academic English; a secondary focus on removing barriers to enrollment in honors and advanced placement work.

South Tahoe High Baseball team ends 2023 season with 2nd place in state, 1st as academic champion

UPDATE 4:30 PM: It wasn't the finish they were hoping for, but the South Tahoe High Vikings ended their 2023 season with an impressive second place in the NIAA 3a State Tournament.

The Vikings ended up playing 11 games in the last nine days between the northern regionals and the state tournament. Their opponent in the final game was Pahrump Valley, the number one seed from the south. South Tahoe fell 0-3.

Even though Pahrump Valley won the final, South Tahoe outscored them in two games 8-5. Temperatures have been in the 90s in Henderson, the site of the tournament.

Tahoe Bike Month gets underway June 1, lots of activities for all ages

The rest of the county is currently celebrating National Bike Month, but with the epic winter and snow still remaining on many trails, Tahoe Bike Month will start June 1.

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition is planning a full calendar of events and is going for a record number of registrations for Tahoe Bike Month.

Kudos: Vail Resort’s EpicPromise grant supports Bread and Broth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Every year Vail Resort provides funding through their EpicPromise Grant program to non-profit organizations in communities where their ski resorts are located. In addition to awarding funds for the Bread and Broth 4 Kids’ program, Bread & Broth (B&B) also received $3,600 for Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort to share the hosting of 12 Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorships throughout 2023.

NDOT roadwork update for Lake Tahoe

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) continues projects at Lake Tahoe on SR28 and SR431. Below is their mid-May schedule. The attached map also shows other work for both NDOT and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) this summer. Work on the new traffic light and infiltration basin at Warrior Way/US 50 will be June-October. There will be parking restrictions on the highway for Zephyr Cove.

There will be no Saturday work this week on SR28 or SR431.

2023 El Dorado County Senior of the Year winners and nominees

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The votes are in for the 2023 Senior of the Year award in El Dorado County. Maureen and Jim Carter, both residents of Placerville, were named as recipients of the award during the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting on May 16. 1,200 new American flags presented to Happy Homestead Cemetery

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One thousand two hundred American flags were presented to Happy Homestead Cemetery Thursday by John Keeley and Troy Stromoen of the Rno Vet Center and Dan Browne of the Lake Tahoe Veterans Alliance.

These flags will be used to honor those who have fallen in service to the country, deceased Veterans, and living military veterans.

"The cost of freedom is steep, and all those who answered the call, a new flag will be placed where they now rest," said Dan Browne, president of the Lake Tahoe Veterans Alliance. "All gave some - some gave all."

Column: Preparing for wildfire as a community

The selection of footwear by the front door says a lot about the change of seasons at Lake Tahoe. Ski boots, trail shoes, and flip-flops may collide in the foyer as Tahoe reluctantly transitions to Spring. While snow piles are still clustered sporadically in the backyard, property owners have already started raking up their yards and clearing pine needles off roofs. As much as we’d like to linger here, it won’t be long before another wildfire season is upon us.

Whittell High School Warriors have high hopes at NIAA 1a State Championships

Freshman Logan Robertson earned a triple-gold at the Northern Regionals last week as he swept the top spot in three distance races, as well as a medal in the high jump.

Edwin Atwood Winslow ~ March 5, 1958 – May 10, 2023

Edwin Atwood Winslow of South Lake Tahoe passed away on May 10, 2023. He was born to Dorothy Jean Cramblett and Edwin Winslow Sr. on March 5, 1958, in Stockton, Calif. He moved to South Lake Tahoe as a young boy and made Lake Tahoe his home for 55 years, making him a docent of Tahoe, where he would take family and friends on tours. He could name every landmark and knew all the special places to take them. He attended Tahoe Valley Elementary School, South Tahoe Middle School, and graduated from South Tahoe High School (STHS) in 1976.

Farmer's Market in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers begin their seasons in June

Fireworks return to South Lake Tahoe for 4th of July

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fireworks are returning to South Lake Tahoe on the 4th of July. The popular Lights on the Lake show hosted by the Tahoe Douglas Visitor's Authority will start at 9:45 p.m. The fireworks will be launched off barges on Lake Tahoe near Edgewood Tahoe.

The Attic Thrift Store in South Lake Tahoe to close as Barton Health shifts focus

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Attic Thrift Store in South Lake Tahoe will be closing in June. Barton Health, the owner of the store, said they will soon have the property up for sale and will be refocusing its structure to better meet the needs of the community.

The Barton Auxiliary opened the thrift store in 1961, and since has raised millions of dollars to support South Lake Tahoe and the hospital through grants, scholarships, equipment, and at the beginning, paying the doctors.

Douglas County school trustees to face off on proposed "Transgender Student Policy"

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - There are two items that are drawing concern on Tuesday's agenda of the Douglas County School District (DCSD) Board of Trustees. One has become contentious and critics say is unnecessary and will be dehumanizing, and the other is a second reading for a new grant policy that prohibits the district from applying for much-needed grants if they involve the teaching of nontraditional pronouns or genders.

Talk Saves Lives, an introduction to suicide prevention

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the community is invited to “Talk Saves Lives - An Introduction to Suicide Prevention” with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Talk Saves Lives is a 45-minute presentation describing the scope of the problem of suicide, the risk factors, warning signs, and what we can all do to help prevent it. This is an evidence-based, trademarked program created by the AFSP National team.

Column: Depression screenings as preventative care

Our mood is influenced by many factors, including stress, illness, and even the weather. But what's the difference between a bad case of the blues and the mental disorder known as depression? Addressing mental health issues is a high priority for our community, as it is frequently identified as a top-three need in the triannual Community Health Needs Assessment.

Depression affects many adults, adolescents, and children. In 2017, The National Institute of Health found the prevalence of Major Depressive Episodes in the United States to be 7.1% among adults and 13.3% among adolescents.

Full house at Tahoe Learning Haven's first teen job fair

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 130 local students took part in the inaugural Tahoe Learning Haven Job Fair this past week at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Angel of Tahoe building. The teens, ages 14-18 went through stations of filling out applications, learning how to interview, resume building, and obtaining work permits. They then went to visit almost 20 employers who want to build up their summer staffing levels.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Warming temps and chance of rain and thunderstorms by next weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The weekend is ending with showers and thunderstorms as an area of low pressure and increased moisture came over the region. During the coming week, there will be a steady warmup that will exacerbate snowmelt and cause stream and river rise regionwide. Most areas will be dry for the early part of the week, then shower and thunderstorm chances arrive as early as Thursday afternoon through next weekend.

Over 300,000 birds migrated over El Dorado County overnight

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - As you slept last night, an estimated 314,900 birds crossed through El Dorado County. At its peak at 1 a.m. Sunday, 170,300 birds were in flight. Since migrating birds regularly fly up to 10,000 feet above the ground, we don't normally see them though the birds overnight were at an average of 3,900 feet.

Seasonal timing and weather conditions dramatically impact their distributions, but this week has had excellent conditions for normal patterns.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a successful fundraising season for the women of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra, all due to the support of the community. They now have over $62,000 to give back to women and children of the South Lake Tahoe area through scholarships, grants, awards, summer book programs, and financial support for nonprofits.

It started with the inaugural Mad Hatter Tea Party at Valhalla on April 30. One hundred guests joined in the fun which included a photo booth, fabulous decorations, costumes, tea, food, mimosas, and a raffle.

Community attends 6th annual Wildfire Safety Expo in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community turned out for the 6th annual Wildfire Safety Expo on Saturday at South Tahoe Middle School, hosted by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR).

Activities and information filled the booths that lined the school's parking lot which was also filled with first responder and agency vehicles.

As wildfire behavior progressively becomes more ferocious, learning how to live in a mountain town is important. This means everyone needs to be extra vigilant with preparedness.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local artist Lori Howell Thompson has added three original works of art to the collection carried at Welcome Home Shoppe in South Lake Tahoe.

The three new pieces of art all depict our favorite Tahoe bears and one giclee available.

"Lori is one of our talented local artists and we are blessed to have her," said the store on social media.

Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake Tahoe opens for 77th season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since 1946, the Tahoe Trout Farm has been providing fishing experiences for both South Lake Tahoe visitors and locals. They open for the 2023 season on Saturday, May 13.

The first delivery of trout arrived this past week. They are normally able to get the gates open before now, but the heavy snowfall put many things in the Sierra behind.

Owners Jim and Jackie Vallier, long-time locals, bought the property in 2012 to make sure its historic fishing spot stayed so more generations could enjoy what is a family tradition to many.

South Lake Tahoe home a total loss after early morning fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe destroyed a home on Blue Lake Avenue along Trout Creek. A 4:22 a.m. Saturday, May 13, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were called to the home which was unoccupied at the time.

Flames were seen several feet into the sky upon arrival of first responders. Fire personnel were able to keep the damage to the home and the historic Knox Johnson cabin next door appeared to have no damage.
