Letter: McClintock introduces Illegal Immigrant Payoff Prohibition Act of 2021
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/04/2021 - 10:28amToday I introduced the Illegal Immigrant Payoff Prohibition Act of 2021. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan are principal co-sponsors.
The legislation will prevent the Attorney General from making settlement payments to individuals and families who entered the United States illegally. It is a direct response to reports that the Biden Administration is proposing to pay as much as $450,000 per person to compensate families that unlawfully entered the United States.
Barton Health: CDC recommends Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11

This recommendation follows approval from the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization (EUA) in this age group, now expanding vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After the Barton Foundation decided to not have its annual Festival of Tree and Lights in 2021, South Tahoe High School stepped in and will host its first Winter Festival on December 3 and 4. The event will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. each night.
The Winter Festival will be completely run by students and will feature many of the favorite Barton events around the school, student union, screening room, sports medicine therapy room, theater, and food trucks will be in front of the school in the Circle.

Lake Wind Advisory Thursday starts off series of small storm systems at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/03/2021 - 8:16pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for Lake Tahoe Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Expect winds from the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
Waves on the lake will be 2-4 feet.
The advisory is ahead of a fast-moving weather system that will move across northeast California and northwest Nevada late tonight into Thursday, bringing a period of gusty winds. Following this system are several other quick-hitters according to the National Weather Service in Reno:

CHP receives grants to combat DUIs and distracted drivers

Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/03/2021 - 8:43amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire in an RV Wednesday morning sent its occupant to the hospital with severe injuries.
At 6:17 a.m. on November 3, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called to the 800 block of Eloise Avenue where they found a recreational vehicle (RV) parked on an empty lot with moderate smoke coming from it. There were no visible flames at the time but a person was inside.
The sole occupant, an unidentified man in his early 60s, was flown to Reno with critical injuries and severe burns according to SLTFR Chief Clive Savacool.

Drink and Putt for a Cause will be held each Sunday in November to raise funds for the Humane Society and Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT). The pub will donate $1 from every beer and $1 from every golf game sold in their monthly event, Sunday FundRaise.

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley continues its speaker series on Eastern Sierra history on Saturday, November 6 with a living history/Chautauqua style presentation by local history David Woodruff. He will perform as Sierra Nevada legend Snowshoe Thompson.
Weather permitting, the talk will take place at the campfire ring at Wylder. Otherwise, it moves into the heated tent on the front deck.
There is no Sunday talk this week but There are plans to continue on weekends through Christmas and New Years. Once dates are set they will be on the South Tahoe Now calendar.
The talks are free.
Overland Meat & Seafood Co. of South Lake Tahoe changes hands

As of November 1, 2021, the new owner is longtime local Victor Gomez.
Mark Cohen opened the popular store in November of 1987, then son Brian bought it and took over on June 15, 2005 after he spent 15 years working as a butcher at a large grocery store chain in town.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 will host a Veterans Day program on Thursday, the 11th of November at 11:00 a.m. at their Hall location of 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
The ceremony will be held rain or shine and will move indoors in the case of inclement weather.
Entertainment for the event will be provided by Davin Kangas and Jill. Maria will be on the bagpipes and the Girl Scouts will be handing out flags.*
California Tahoe Conservancy looks to buy Motel 6, old Carrows and nearby property
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/01/2021 - 8:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its next quarterly meeting on November 8, the California Tahoe Conservancy board will discuss the possible acquisition of two environmentally sensitive parcels in South Lake Tahoe - one home to Motel 6 and the old Carrows restaurant and a Knox Johnson parcel on Sunset Drive across the river.
Staff will present to the board a plan that would cost $10,000,000 and would cover purchasing the parcels, demolishing existing structures, and stabilizing the related sites.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park and Tahoe Pines facilities close for season

Although roads and facilities are closed, the park grounds remain open to pedestrian access year-round.
The 725-acre Van Sickle Bi-State Park provides day-use opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. For visitor safety, sledding is not allowed.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Veterans Day Appreciation event will be held on November 10 at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center. Originally scheduled for the CVIC Hall, it has been moved to the center's Grandview Dining Room, starting at 9:00 a.m.
The County is partnering with Suicide Prevention Network to honor the area's Veterans during this event, which will include entertainment, the presentation of branches, guest speakers, raffle prizes, resource information, and more.
Public workshops for new wood-burning device regulations starting in Washoe County in 2022

September of '83 also marks the first time the 152nd Civil Engineer Squadron partnered with the United States Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) to work on restoration and historical preservation projects at the Tallac Historic Site.
Forest Service lifts enhanced fire restrictions at Lake Tahoe

Although the LTBMU has lifted the restrictions imposed last June due to extremely dry conditions, year-round camping and campfire restrictions remain in effect.

Lake Tahoe agencies to begin fall prescribed fire operations next week

Prescribed fires help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

Tahoe Wellness Center asks for zoning amendment to Tourist Core Area Plan

Councilman Cody Bass's business, Tahoe Wellness Center, has submitted a development application to the City of South Lake Tahoe proposing an amendment to the Tourist Core Area Plan/Specific Plan. They need this change so they can operate in the Tourist Core Area, something not currently allowed for current business activities.
Lake Tahoe course explores underpinnings of hate and how to respond to rising antisemitism

This fall, Rabbi Mordey Richler from Chabad at Lake Tahoe will offer a new four-session course from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), titled Outsmarting Antisemitism.
Using history, Talmudic sources, Jewish mysticism, and contemporary expert analysis, the course addresses some of the niggling questions we grapple with as individuals and as a community. Why does antisemitism persist? How can we make hate go away? How can we counter Israel-focused antisemitism and prevent our own youth from unwittingly lending their voices to antisemitic agendas?

Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 896 cases - +4 - The 14-day new case rate is 35 with 258 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 3374 cases - +4 - The 14-day new case rate is 79 with 186 per 100,000 residents.
Diamond Springs, El Dorado - 782 cases - +3 - The 14-day new case rate is 32 with 340 per 100,000 residents.
Tahoe Youth and Family Services executive director announces retirement

She brought many years of experience with her when she joined the non-profit after retiring as the executive director with Tahoe Safe Alliance and has been a valued leader of the organization since 2018.
“It has been an honor to be the executive director of Tahoe Youth & Family Services. Its mission is critical to our community and to the lives of so many children, youth, adults, and families,” said Carey.
LTUSD homeless advocacy program accepting winter clothing donations
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/28/2021 - 3:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With winter on its way, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) wants to ensure the students in its homeless advocacy program can enjoy playing in the snow this year.
The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Office of Education, and other organizations already help students with winter coats and LTUSD is looking to supplement those donations with new or used snow boots, new gloves, hats, bibbed overalls, earmuffs, and snow pants.
Judge Suzanne Kingsbury retiring from the bench after 25 years
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/28/2021 - 12:39pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - After 25 years of serving El Dorado County as a Superior Court Judge, Suzanne Kingsbury will be setting down the gavel and retiring at the end of the year.
Kingsbury was elected to the bench in 1996, she made history as the first woman to serve as a superior court judge in El Dorado County, and in 1999 became its first female presiding judge, and now she will be leaving as the longest-serving current presiding judge in the state of California, male or female.
Even though she is retiring, she won't be a stranger in the courthouse.
