SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Valley Campground will be hosting the 2024 Rat Pack Rendezvous Vintage Trailer Rally on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will consist of an Open House and a Classic Car Cruise-in. People are invited to go to the campground meet owners and explore a stunning array of vintage trailers. The event is open to the public and is free of cost.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. - The Placer County Planning Commission recommended approval of Alterra’s development proposal for the Palisades Tahoe property in Olympic Valley with some conditions, much to the disappointment of Sierra Watch, a group of local conservation advocates who want to protect the integrity of the region and its natural resources.

SIERRA COUNTY, Calif. - Firefighters have been facing hot, dry days and windy conditions on the Bear Fire, which is burning west of Reno, north of Truckee, in the Tahoe National Forest. Since starting on September 2, the fire has burned 3,327 acres and is now 15 percent contained. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Our beloved Shari Sue Fairweather was born December 14, 1948, and passed away June 5, 2024. Her 75 years started at the U.S. Naval Dispensary in Seattle, Wash. with parents Donald Fairweather and Earlene Crouse Fairweather (our Gada). Donald was transferred to Mot Naval Airbase in Mountain View, Calif. and Shari became a Californian forever. She graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale in 1966. By then, she had already
developed friendships that would last her lifetime.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Flight Deck Grill & Golf Club may soon be coming to the Lake Tahoe Airport as a new concessionaire agreement will be discussed and possibly approved on Tuesday. The South Lake Tahoe City Council will receive a presentation from Flight Deck Grill & Golf Club, LLC on their plans for the space that has been vacant since February 16, 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Optimist Club of South Lake Tahoe along with the newly formed Junior Optimist Club at South Tahoe High School, presented a check to the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe for $6,000 for playground equipment. The Optimist Club said they are proud to support the Boys & Girls Club whose mission, along with the Optimists' mission, is to support local youth.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will hear a list of recommended changes to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance at their next meeting on September 10. It is time certain on the agenda for 1:15 p.m., meaning it won't be heard before that time but it could be after.

After the VHR ordinance was approved, Supervisor Brooke Laine formed an advisory committee to evaluate it and recommend changes. The committee comprised representatives in Area 5 with VHRs - Meyers, Tahoma, Meeks Bay, Pollock Pines, and Strawberry.

Audrey Pearl Shirts, born August 12, 1934, quietly passed away on August 12, 2024, her 90th birthday. Her children, Len and Paula, and their spouses, Franziska and John, were with her.

Audrey’s early years were spent with her parents, Art and Sue Jones, and brothers Claude and Harry, in Bear Lake, Michigan. The family relocated to Southern California in 1939, and Audrey graduated from Redlands High in 1952.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On September 3, Mayor Pro Tem John Friedrich submitted a letter of resignation to the South Lake Tahoe City Clerk, effective immediately.

Friedrich attended the recent budget meeting remotely but has been unable to attend meetings for several weeks for personal reasons.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has opened the application process to fill the vacant city council seat. The remaining term of Friedrich's seat is until December 10, 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - – Low-income South Lake Tahoe residents may be
eligible to receive a discount on their monthly water and sewer bill through South Tahoe Public Utility District’s expanded Customer Assistance Program. Effective September 1, 2024, eligible low-income STPUD customers can qualify for a 15 or 25 percent discount off their water and sewer rate.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) has provided fire protection and advanced life support services to the Lake Tahoe West Shore area of El Dorado County through a shared services agreement with the Meeks Bay Fire Protection District since 2014.

The inaugural Back-to-School Drive, hosted by the Marcella Foundation in collaboration with MountainHouse and Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS), concluded with outstanding success, providing essential supplies to children in need.

I live for a good side dish, especially a colorful and flavorful vegetable side dish. Green beans are one of my favorite vegetables. They are so versatile and can be made in a variety of ways.

This is one of my “go-to” recipes when I want something tasty that I can throw together in a hurry.

Grilled Green Beans with Peppers and Onions

2 red bell peppers, cut lengthwise in half, seeds removed

1 medium red onion, cut crosswise into ¼-inch slices

2 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. olive oil

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. pepper

2 lbs. green beans, trimmed
 


LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. – Algae in Lake Tahoe has been a hot topic this summer. While these tiny organisms are a natural part of Tahoe’s aquatic ecosystem, algae can become a harmful algal bloom, or HAB, under the right conditions. No HABs have been detected in Lake Tahoe this summer, but this time of year is when to be on the lookout when warm, shallow water increases the likelihood for HABs. For everyone who enjoys the region’s lakes, rivers, and creeks, it’s important to know how to spot a HAB, where to report your sightings, and what to do to keep yourselves, your pets, and others safe.

UPDATE 9.3 at 9 PM: The Bear Fire has grown to 2,000 acres. The combination of warming temperatures, dry fuel conditions, and strong winds intensified the fire's behavior today. Fire crews are working tirelessly to establish containment lines, while aviation resources are actively engaged in delivering retardant and water drops. Winds tonight are expected to remain steady from the west at around 10 mph. Due to the increased fire activity, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has expanded evacuation warnings to include zones SIE-E058 and SIE-E059.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local author and teacher, Bridey Thelen-Heidel, presents her memoir Bright Eyes at the next Friends of the Library presentation on Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Heidel, who teaches English at her alma mater South Tahoe High, will present her newly published book about the struggles of living with a chaotic and dysfunctional mother. "Bright Eyes, Surviving our Monsters and Learning to Live Without Them" A Memoir, will be available for purchase.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Emanate Gallery & Framing at The Crossing at Tahoe Valley in South Lake Tahoe is closing its doors after operating since February 2018.

"After many years of showcasing incredible talent and being a part of this vibrant community, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors," said the owners in a letter to customers. "Several factors have informed this decision, including family health and new, exciting family transitions."

Starting September 3, owner Angela Cabrera will continue what she did before opening the gallery, custom framing.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Friday, September 6, Bread & Broth resumes their B&B 4 Kids School Year Weekend Food Bag program. Weekend food bags are distributed every Friday at all five pre-K through 8th-grade schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (Bijou Community School, Meyers Elementary School, Sierra House Elementary, Tahoe Valley Elementary, and South Tahoe Middle School) along with students enrolled in the McKinney-Vento program at Lake Tahoe High School and Mt. Tallac Continuation High School.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For a small mountain town, South Lake Tahoe has had a vibrant theater history. Thousands of residents and visitors have seen plays from classical to musicals to new works in various venues in South Lake Tahoe. Hundreds of community members have participated onstage and backstage to bring these plays to life.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An estimated 60-70 people took over the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Al Tahoe Blvd. on Saturday to protest Measure N, the proposed $6,000 vacancy tax on November's ballot.

There were new and long-time locals and second-home owners carrying signs side-by-side during the event that was organized by local business owner Erick Asbury. He also paid for the signs people carried.

"It was very positive and everyone was very happy to be out there," said Councilmember Tamara Wallace who was out on the corner with husband Duane.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Despite the unexpectedly chilly and wild weather in August, the 7th annual Tahoe Brewfest on Ski Run Blvd. was a tremendous success, raising over $125,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. On Saturday, August 24, more than 40 local and regional breweries showcased their craft beer, kombucha, cider, and spirits. More than 2,000 attendees were at the event, traveling from across the globe, representing 21 states as well as countries such as Japan and France.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Sand Harbor and Cave Rock boat ramps will shift to winter operating hours. The new schedule will see both boat ramps open daily from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sand Harbor's boat ramp will now be open seven days a week.

To ensure all boats are properly inspected and sealed by the 4:30 p.m. closing time, we strongly recommend planning to pull your boat or jet ski from the water by 4:00 p.m. This will provide boat inspectors with sufficient time to complete the necessary sealing process.
