CHP cites 22 drivers for making turns at closed intersections near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a few weekends of verbal warnings to drivers making right turns from Sawmill and North Upper Truckee roads when prohibited, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) ticketed 22 drivers on Memorial Day.

CHP patrol units wrote eight citations at Sawmill Road and 14 at North Upper Truckee Monday. Four of the violators had local addresses, five were frequent visitors and four said they were tourists. Four of the ticketed did say they were told by someone to take that route, according to CHP South Lake Tahoe Officer Ruth Loehr.

Inmate found at Thunderbird after going missing from Lake Tahoe work crew

3:34 p.m. Update: Johannsen was found by Washoe County Deputies on the Thunderbird Lodge property at around 2:15 p.m. this afternoon. He was walking on the main roadway, less than 50 yards away from the main house. Deputies detained Johannsen and released him to the NDOC.

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - An inmate assigned to minimum-security work detail on the east shore of Lake Tahoe has become separated from his work crew. According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Ray Johannsen was with the Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) fire crew just west of Memorial Point.

Excavated dirt from new Tahoe South Events Center being reused nearby

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Construction on the new Tahoe South Events Center is underway with more than 50,000 cubic yards of dirt being excavated from the site at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa. Normally this much dirt is transported out of the Lake Tahoe Basin which not only adds to the construction costs but also adds miles driven on local roads and more emissions sent into the air.

The dirt from the events center didn't have to make a long trip. In cooperation with Edgewood Tahoe and Tahoe Beach Club, the dirt is being repurposed for landscaping features and fill dirt.

CHP holding free car seat check event at their South Lake Tahoe office

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be conducting a car seat check-up event at their South Lake Tahoe office on Saturday, June 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call for an appointment at 530-577-1001 and walk-ups are welcome.

The current law states child passengers must ride in either a car seat or booster seat until the age of eight years old and the only exception to the law is if the child is 4 feet 9 inches in height.

Businesses may see lower assessed values and taxes due to COVID-19

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Many businesses in the county may see reductions to their assessed value due to impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, the El Dorado County Assessor Karl Weiland announced today.

Business property does not fall under the Prop. 13 umbrella and is required to be assessed at the fair market value as of each lien date. Under Prop 13, real property is required to be assessed at the lower of the Prop 13 trended value, or the fair market value per Prop. 8, as of the lien date of January 1st.

Fishing tackle and bait are available for free, or participants can bring their own. There will be some experts on hand to provide guidance on how to catch the best fish.

Record highs for South Lake Tahoe possble in the week ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High pressure will continue to strengthen over the region through mid-week, building heat as high temperatures rise several degrees each day as an anomalously strong upper-level ridge moves onshore from the eastern
Pacific and builds over the Western US. Record highs are possible in South Lake Tahoe through Wednesday. Isolated thunderstorms are possible Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, with temperatures declining late week.

The Heart Safe Community program, sponsored by the Barton Foundation, is a community-wide effort aimed at educating citizens on the dangers of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The Heart Safe Community program is based on strategic placement of and easy access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in public gathering spots throughout the South shore of Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after alleged hit and run collision

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the afternoon of May 29 the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a report of a hit-and-run collision on US-50 near Motel 6. The suspect fled the scene.

The victim in the collision was transported to Barton.

Witnesses said the suspect was seen driving erratically while fleeing into the State streets near Tahoe Keys Blvd.

SLTPD Officer Roesch located the suspect vehicle at the dead end of Wyoming Avenue with extensive front-end damage, unoccupied.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue reminds public of charcoal fire restrictions at some dwellings

As we enter the season of outdoor recreation and barbeques, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue reminds the public of a California state fire code that restricts the use of charcoal barbeques in multi-family units.

Single homes and duplexes can have a charcoal barbeque but apartments and condominiums may not have open flame cooking devices on decks or balconies unless they are protected by an automatic sprinkler system.

June lottery for up to 12 new Lake Tahoe pier allocations

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Shoreline Plan that was adopted by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) in 2018 laid out the future of pier and buoy allocations around Lake Tahoe. A maximum of 128 private piers and 1,486 private moorings will be allowed along the shore of Lake Tahoe, with allotments awarded through periodic lotteries until the cap is met.

Every two years, TRPA can permit up to 12 new piers in the Tahoe Basin, with a preference for multiple-parcel, shared-use piers. Through the lottery,

Douglas County Sheriff's Office says homes, offices and a juvenile struck by BBs

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - There have been several reports of damage to homes and businesses caused by a BB gun in Douglas County. Between Tuesday, May 25, and Friday, May 28, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) says suspects in a dark-colored SUV with Texas license plates were shooting from the vehicle. A juvenile was also struck by a BB while walking home from school.

According to DCSO, they believe at least two suspects have been in the SUV.

El Dorado and Amador County wines shine at inaugural Foothill Wine Festival competition

The first-ever Foothill Wine Festival Competition was held in Folsom on May 15. It was open to all wines bearing labels from Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Placer, and Tuolumne counties.

The inaugural competition crowned Skinner Grenache Blanc from El Dorado County as the best white with 100 points; Amador Cellars Estate Tempranillo was voted the best red; Gwinlan Estate from Fairplay was crowned the best sparkling wine with their 2018 Estate Brut, earning 98 points; and best dessert wine honors went to the diVittorio Merlot Port from El Dorado County.

Planned new entrance for Round Hill Pines up for public review

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Summer traffic on US50 from Stateline to Glenbrook increases during the summer with over 20,000 motorists on an average day using the highway. Included in that traffic are beachgoers, many turning off the highway into the Round Hill Pines Resort with a posted speed of 45 mph. The left turn for eastbound drivers is a dangerous one since there is no dedicated turn lane and at the top of a vertical low-visibility curve.

Did you feel it? 4.3 earthquake recorded in middle of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Were you drinking your morning coffee or having breakfast in the Lake Tahoe area at 8:25 a.m. Friday when you feel the earth move?

The University of Nevada seismological lab recorded a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in the same area as the recent cluster of quakes, north of South Lake Tahoe and east of Glenbrook, right in the middle of Lake Tahoe. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has recorded the quake at 4.1 magnitude. It was located just 1.2 miles below the surface, according to USGS initial reports.

There was also a 2.8m quake at 4L59 a.m. Friday.

County creates special redistricting website; Public meeting set on new political boundaries

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The results of the 2020 Census are six months behind due to COVID-19, so when El Dorado County finally gets them they'll need to move quickly in preparation for the 2022 election.

North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire Protection Districts prohibit all open burning and recreational fires

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD), Meeks Bay Fire Protection District (MBFPD), and Alpine Springs CWD jurisdictions have activated local fire restrictions by suspending all solid fuel recreational fires and open burning. The suspension takes effect Monday, May 31, and will remain in place through the remainder of fire season.

This announcement follows actions that triggered their decision - both CalFire AEU Unit and CalFire NEU Unit suspending all burn permits for the season in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Nevada casinos "win" $1.03B in April, South Shore $21.7M

STATELINE, Nev. - Casinos in the state of Nevada shut down in March 2020 as the coronavirus started to put its grip on public activity. This monthly report of Nevada's non-restricted gaming licensees for the month of April 2021 does not compare to the previous year's activity as normal due to the closure.

The Gaming Control Board (GCB) reported a total “gaming win” of $1,039,444,911 for the month of April 2021. In its monthly report, GCB figures show the casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a "win" of $21,760,733. Both of these figures are down from last month.

$116.5 million vaccine incentive program unveiled in California

In an effort to increase vaccination rates in all 58 counties of California, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced a new program, Vax for the Win. Keep Tahoe Bears Wild - Do not interfere with Lake Tahoe's bear cubs and yearlings

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most people enjoy watching bears around Lake Tahoe, especially in spring when the little bears emerge from their winter resting places with their mothers. All cubs are born in January or February and known as the "cub of the year" if from the current year while the cubs born last season are "yearlings."

August completion planned on latest two segments of South Tahoe Greenway

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Work has begun to finish two phases of the 3.86-mile long South Tahoe Greenway Shared-Use Trail (Greenway) that will connect Sierra Boulevard to the Van Sickle Bi-State Park near Stateline in South Lake Tahoe.

COVID put a delay on the project because the delivery of materials for the precast concrete boardwalk system was delayed. The Houston, Texas concrete plant contracted for the project had been directly impacted by the pandemic.
