Lightning strikes South Lake Tahoe home, causes small fire; Tree at Emerald Bay also struck

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Firefighters responded to a lightning strike on a South Lake Tahoe home Monday afternoon and were able to quickly extinguish it before any major damage.

Just after 3 p.m. on July 15, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to the home on Jeffery Street near the Tahoe Keys. As a lightning cell passed over South Lake Tahoe, a bolt hit a tree adjacent to the home, and then hit the roof of the home. The homeowners were at home at the time and were able to get out. There were no injuries.

Tahoe Fund hires local artists to transform National Forest restrooms with murals

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Visitors to four popular recreation sites managed by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will now greeted with a surprise when they step into the restroom facilities. Instead of blank walls inside the vault toilets, people will find beautiful murals painted by local artists through a project led by the LTBMU and the Tahoe Fund.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 8th annual Chris Little Memorial Beach Wrestling Championships will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, on Timber Cove Beach behind the Tahoe Beach Retreat.

Everyone is welcome to wrestle in style "beach wrestling" for male and female divisions from 5 years old and up. Sign-ups from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, wrestling starts at 10 a.m., and awards and cleanup at 1 p.m.

There will be a coaches/officials meeting @ 9:30 a.m. Both set up and clean up help is needed. Bring buckets and tools to soften sand before the matches.

More rain expected Monday at Lake Tahoe, then sunshine and warming temperatures

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a very wet weekend, the storm chances drop off significantly on Tuesday through the remainder of the work week as we remain under the influence of the trough. Temperatures will also remain moderated to near or just above seasonal averages through the week.

More typical July warmth is expected through much of this week. A warming trend looks likely next weekend as a ridge re-amplifies over the western US, according to Reno's National Weather Service (NWS).

Mardy Fish birdies nine of final 13 holes to take lead heading into Sunday

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Mardy Fish is becoming a birdie machine at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, and it’s got him on the cusp of his second American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in five years.

Fish, the former professional tennis player, and U.S. Davis Cup captain, birdied nine of his final 13 holes – each worth 3 points in this modified Stableford scoring event – and has 57 points, seven points clear of second-place Joe Pavelski heading into Sunday’s final round. The winner receives $150,000 of the $750,000 purse.

Annual Optimist Club Duck Races at Paradise Park July 20

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Carolina Panthers wide receiver Adam Thielen had three birdies and an eagle to grab a one-point lead over Mardy Fish after Friday's first round of the American Century Championship (ACC).

Thielen had three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 16th to finish with 24 points at the 35th annual celebrity golf tournament. Fish, the 2020 winner, had five birdies and totaled 23 points in the Stableford scoring used in the ACC.

Red Flag Warning for Lake Tahoe Saturday and Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Services (NWS) in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and the rest of the Eastern Sierra, northeast California including Surprise Valley, and western Nevada.

The warning is in effect from 5 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds up to 50 mph. Scattered thunderstorms are expected with little to no rainfall.

Whenever there is a Red Flag Warning in South Lake Tahoe, no outdoor fires of any kind are allowed due to the fire danger. This includes BBQs.

Round One of 35th annual American Century Championship on Friday at Edgewood

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Friday begins the 35th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. Wednesday and Thursday were full of Pro-Am tournaments, practice, and a lot of fun for the fans, and the players.

On Thursday, the Korbel Long Drive Contest was held, with recently retired Jason Kelce recording the longest drive on the par-5 15th hole. Kelce hit the ball 322 years and for his efforts won $5,000 to go toward a charity of his choice.

NTSB releases preliminary investigation on plane crash that killed two on their way to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two cousins on their way to South Lake Tahoe to enjoy their timeshare died in a plane crash in the mountains south of Lake Tahoe on June 12, 2024. Raphael Jones Jr., 74, of San Jose, and Nannete Singer, 80, of Lodi, died in the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary report on the crash.

Enhanced fire restrictions enacted on USFS land at Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe man convicted of impersonating federal officers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After a three-day trial, a federal jury found Anton Andreyevich Iagounov, 38, of South Lake Tahoe, guilty of four counts of impersonating a federal officer, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

Iagounov pretended to be a federal law enforcement agent by creating and sending counterfeit investigative documents, which he signed in the name of a fictional federal agent, seeking highly protected information from the Department of Defense.

Knight Monsters add talented defenseman Brennan Kapcheck

STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters announced Wednesday that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Brennan Kapcheck.

Kapcheck, 27, joins the Knight Monsters after playing the past three seasons with the Newfoundland Growlers (ECHL) where he registered 59 points (7g, 52) in 115 regular season games from 2022-2024. He also added an additional 14 points (1g,13a) in 31 playoff appearances with the Growlers in 2022 & 2023. The 5-9, 179-pound blueliner also made ten appearances last season overseas with HKM Zvolen in Slovakia logging an assist.

Cortez Masto’s legislation is cosponsored by Senators Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), and Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) and it would allow federal funds to continue maintaining the environment, supporting local jobs, and strengthening the tourism economy around Lake Tahoe. The legislation now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Select bottom barriers to be removed from Taylor Creek/Marsh in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Contractors will begin removing some bottom barriers at the mouth of Taylor Creek and the adjacent marsh this week. LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - It's on! The gauntlet has been thrown down and DJ Khaled and Jimmy Fallon will be facing off at Edgewood Tahoe this Saturday during the American Century Championship (ACC). The two were talking about golf as Khaled was a guest on Fallon's show when a challenge was made, resulting in the two going head-to-head in a special challenge golf match.

The pair, who aren't in the ACC tournament, will play on the popular par-3 17th hole at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course after the conclusion of Saturday's third round, at approximately 3:30 p.m.

CHP seeking South Lake Tahoe hit and run suspect

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California Highway Patrol (CHP) of South Lake Tahoe is asking for the public's help in catching a hit-and-run suspect. On Saturday, July 6, 2024, a light blue Subaru Outback with a bike in the back struck another vehicle in the SR-89/US-50 roundabout. The Subaru was being driven by a white male adult wearing a tan floppy hat. The Subaru fled the scene without exchanging information with the other driver, a violation of 20002(a) VC.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Unity at the Lake is welcoming Donna Apidone as their guest presenter on Sunday, August 4 at 10 a.m. Donna is a former "Morning Edition" and “CapRadio Reads” host on NPR, and since leaving the radio network, she has been teaching and writing.

Donna teaches TransForMission, a course all about finding Purpose in life, at Sacramento State University and congregations throughout the region. The course is based on her book, also titled TransForMission.

Letter: We are NO on the Vacancy Tax

We formed our coalition, Keep Community First, to address a series of anti-business, anti-community tax increase proposals being discussed by the South Lake Tahoe City Council, propelled in large part by one Council member - Scott Robbins.

To date, we have successfully turned aside two of those proposals - a two percent increase in the City’s Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) and a $23 minimum wage standard. We are now focused and firmly opposed to Measure N on the City’s November ballot which would tax the owners of homes within the City if they are “vacant” more than 183 days a year.

43rd annual Tour of the California Alps Death Ride this weekend

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The 43rd annual Tour of the California Alps Death Ride returns for 2024 in Alpine County on Saturday, July 13. The 103-mile ride starts and finishes at Turtle Rock Park in Markleeville and covers both sides of three mountain passes - Monitor, Ebbett's, and the Pacific Grade.

There will be road closures on Saturday to be aware of: SR-4 (Ebbett's Pass) will be closed from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m., and SR-89 (Alpine State Hwy) will be closed from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Riders will begin at 5 a.m. and cover 14,000 feet of climbing during the day.

El Dorado County is one of seven counties on Fire Risk Reduction List

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County has been named one of seven counties to receive placement on the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire Risk Reduction List. This recognition highlights local agencies throughout the state that meet the best practices for local fire planning.

Placer County and the Town of Truckee also made the list.

On June 19, the Board of Forestry adopted a resolution to approve the 2024 Fire Risk Reduction Community List, which became effective July 1. A copy of this resolution and the 2024 iteration of the list can be found here.

More algae testing around Lake Tahoe after social media post goes viral about death of dog

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Scientists test the beautiful blue water of Lake Tahoe often, and shoreline testing is routinely done in search of possible harmful algal blooms, or HABs.

A social media post was made on TikTok and shared on many other platforms about a dog dying after being in the water at El Dorado Beach or Nevada Beach. The dog owner stated her veterinarian said it was due to HABs.

Royal Fire burning 12 miles southwest of Truckee now 168 acres, missing hiking group found

UPDATE 5 p.m. Monday: Air Attack is reporting the Royal Fire at 154 acres due to more accurate mapping. There has been no change in containment but the fire continued to hold within its footprint throughout the day. Tankers have boxed the fire in with retardant. Three Type 1 helicopters have been performing water drops throughout the day.
