SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke mainly from the large Dixie Fire north of Lake Tahoe is covering Northern California, Western Nevada and filling the Lake Tahoe Basin today.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There were 95 new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County since yesterday.
The 14-day case rates and number of the population per 100,000 residents are continuing to climb closer to data seen at the height of the pandemic in Winter 2020. It is already higher than last summer. At no time during the winter were all areas of El Dorado County in the red, or high spread, category.
The new cases for El Dorado County:
Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 590 cases - +4 - The 14-day new case rate is 28 with 206 per 100,000 residents.
Local pair arrested in connection with 2019 South Lake Tahoe murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two arrests have been made in connection with the December 16, 2019 death of Jorge Campos who had died in his Lodi Avenue home under suspicious circumstances.
For the last 20 months, detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and El Dorado County District Attorney's Office have been working on the case.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Tamarack the cub broke out of his Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care enclosure over night on Sunday, several reports have come into the nonprofit about sightings in the South Lake Tahoe area.
All sighting reports have been followed up on but one from Wednesday appears to be the strongest evidence that the 25 pound, 6-month-old cub is okay.
Meeks Bay project could remove marina for restoration of creek and lagoon

MEEKS BAY, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is planning on removing the marina at Meeks Bay to restore the creek and lagoon to a more natural condition while continuing to support sustainable recreation opportunities.

Letter: Why do we allow Lime Scooters in our town?

It is certainly the best business model I have ever seen. Pure Genius.
All over South Shore we see these cute little lime green scooters. We see them at bus stops. We see them at street corners. We see them in parking lots. All set up in little rows waiting for tourists to wave their phones at them and off they go.
So, what is the problem with that?
Well………there are quite a few problems with that.

Slow Food Lake Tahoe (SFLT) is bringing an Alaskan salmon buying club to the Truckee-Tahoe area. This club gives locals the opportunity to purchase sustainably caught Alaskan sockeye salmon at a significant discount. In return non-profit SFLT will receive five percent of the proceeds to help support the future of their local programs including the Food Bank Garden, providing organic produce for Sierra Community House
NDOT holding meeting on Mt. Rose Highway corridor plan for Reno end of road

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will host a public information meeting Aug. 10 to gather public feedback on corridor planning for future traffic improvements to the lower segment of Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431). The study will envision future traffic needs and potential improvements to provide for traffic accessibility and safety amid community growth.
Douglas County updates on Tamarack Fire debris and resources

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas Disposal will be removing the debris boxes today (August 5, 2021) and not replace them with new boxes due to an increase of disposal in non-household waste. Douglas Disposal will still provide self-haul trash collection, at no cost, for non-Douglas Disposal customers from the affected areas through Monday, August 9. The Transfer Station hours of operation are Tuesday – Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm.

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Drivers on Nevada highways will see new creative safety messages on electronic freeway signs that were the result of a Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) contest in 2020. They received almost 1,000 entries.
All of the submissions were evaluated and the top 11 were put out to the public for voting. These three were submitted by Nevadans and are a mix of popular national driving safety messages and original messages:

STPUD employee credited with saving Markleeville facilities during Tamarack Fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Saturday, July 17 the Tamarack Fire experienced explosive growth and burned over the ridge toward Markleeville and the South Tahoe Public Utility District’s (STPUD) recycled water facilities just south of Woodfords. Buck McLelland, a pump station operator for the District and a Woodfords resident, recognized the threat to District facilities and immediately responded by evaluating the location of the fire. McLelland contacted fire personnel to bring in a 20 man strike team.
River Fire near Colfax prompts evacuations

10:00 p.m. UPDATE 8/5: The River Fire is 15 percent contained and has burned 2,600 acres. 76 structures have been destroyed, 20 damaged and there have been 3 injuries. Firefighters took advantage of the cooler temperatures today and made good progress on building containment lines around the fire. A combination of additional hand crews, ground resources, and aircraft today, increased containment to 15% while keeping fire spread acreage to a minimum.

4:00PM Update: The National Weather Service in Reno has added a "Lake Wind Advisory" to the Lake Tahoe forecast for Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Winds will be from the west 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected. Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2-4 feet.
The advisory is for the following lakes: Pyramid, Lahontan and Rye Patch, Tahoe, Donner, Fallen Leaf, Prosser and Boca, Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Washoe, Walker, Topaz, Bridgeport, Mono, and Crowley and Frenchman, Stampede, Davis, and Eagle.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since the first SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe in 2011, local controversy has followed with noise and neighborhood safety complaints of the outdoor concert held annually Dec. 29-31. SnowGlobe operators met with a local grassroots, the No Globe Alliance, to address their concerns. As a result sound mitigation and attempts to lessen the affects on those living nearby were initiated, but sound travels in winter, especially when there is no snow on the ground.

Tamarack the burned bear breaks out of South Lake Tahoe enclosure

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The bear burned in the Tamarack Fire and rehabilitating at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) has escaped its enclosure. Even though badly injured and bandaged up, the bear named Tamarack found its way out on sometime after seen on cameras in its enclosure on the evening of August 1.
The 25-28-pound bear was able to dig under a secured electrical fence, even with the burned and bandaged front paws.

MEYERS, Calif. - The environmental documents have been completed for the planned roundabout for the intersection of US50 and Pioneer Trail in Meyers.
The County of El Dorado is the project sponsor and lead agency, in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation. They are proposing to convert the existing signalized intersection at the US50/SR89 and Pioneer Trail In Meyers into a three-leg modern roundabout. This is part of their improvement project, the Pioneer Trail/US Highway 50 Intersection Safety Improvement Project.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Taylor Creek Visitor Center and Kiva Beach will be closed for the week after plague tests on wildlife in the area came back positive.
El Dorado County Vector Control will be conducting treatments in the area through Friday, August 6 so the parking lots at both areas will be closed as well as the surrounding areas. They should complete eradication treatments on Thursday, and the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit anticipates having the two areas open by the weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe celebrated 30 years of providing services to children and their families on the South Shore with a big party on Friday.
The Angel of Tahoe, Lisa Maloff, joined founding board members of the club, staff and children to celebrate with a combined summer party and birthday party. There were large inflatable slides and bounce houses, a magic show from Alex Ramon, and of course, cake.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A drier southwest flow will decrease thunderstorm chances and bring a return to more typical afternoon breezes for the balance of this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Increasing winds by the middle of the week could heighten fire
weather concerns going into Wednesday evening. Temperatures will warm back to more seasonal levels through next week into the weekend.

$23,000 in fines to date as almost half of VHRs permits expire South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When Measure T was approved by voters in 2018, all vacation home rentals (VHRs) not in a commercial zone or the tourist core area would be gone by December 31, 2021. No permits are being renewed this year outside of those two exempt areas.
Between January and June, 430 VHRs were phased out in South Lake Tahoe with 492 permits remaining as of June 1, 2021.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is partnering with area first responders to host the National Night Out 2021 event on Tuesday, August 3.
This year's National Night Out will be held at the Blue Zone Sports parking lot at the Y from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
There will be food, games, activities, a mobile vaccine clinic, resources, and various first responder vehicles. This is a family-friendly event and a great chance to connect with our local first responders.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund is putting on the first ever Non-Profit Market Mixer on Thursday, August 26 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This is a free event that will allow you to mix with your friends and neighbors and learn about some of the great non-profits in our community.
This farmer's-market style evening will feature almost 40 non-profits who will be set up on Ski Run Boulevard to showcase themselves to any interested community member.

Think about it, in the nine years or so that SnowGlobe has been here it has violated its contract over and over and over. The most recent violation has been SnowGlobe's inability to abide by its current contract to identify an alternative site by June of 2021. Why would you work with someone who constantly doesn't follow through on an agreed to contract? Oh, please don't let them tell you that they didn't have time last year to research locations because of COVID. They had plenty of time because they didn't have to produce an event last year.

The 14-day case rates and number of the population per 100,000 residents are continuing to climb closure to data seen at the height of the pandemic. According to Test Well of South Lake Tahoe and Reno, they had a 21 percent positivity rate on 100 tests on Thursday alone. Tests they did over the previous seven days was 12.6 percent and 10.4 percent for previous two weeks. Below is the information for El Dorado County, Douglas County and Washoe County.

Teen falls 50 feet to bottom of Eagle Falls at Emerald Bay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A teenage boy sustained serious injuries after falling at Eagle Falls on Wednesday.
At approximately 1:33 p.m., El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a 911 call about a long fall at the falls in Emerald Bay State Park. EDSO was joined by multiple Lake Tahoe area law enforcement, rescue personnel and fire agencies at the scene.

Flash Flood Watch for portions of east central California and western Nevada, including the following areas, in east central California, Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Mono County. In western Nevada, Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area and Mineral and Southern Lyon Counties.
Placer County Supervisors approve temporary moratorium on new VHR permits on North Shore

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. - Due to a growing housing crisis in the North Lake Tahoe Region, the Placer County Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to approve a temporary moratorium on the issuance of new short-term rental permits. The county doesn't have data on how many of the new cases are breakthrough cases or the Delta variant, but they have been been alerted to at least 11 Delta variant cases, all with lab collection dates between May and early July.

The self-guided Lake Tahoe Art Tour is back for 2021, the 14th anniversary of giving the public a glimpse into local art studios with a unique opportunity to meet the artists, and view, and buy, art directly from the makers. It will be held over two weekends, July 30 - August 1, and August 6-8.
Although the tour this year has been scaled back to a smaller size than usual, there are still 11 locations and 21 artists, and includes a wide range of photographers, jewelers, painters, printmakers, and ceramicists.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Continuing its mission of advancing local healthcare through philanthropy, the Barton Foundation has purchased 30 new high-tech wheelchairs for Barton Health, an award of $90,000. The wheelchairs have been distributed for use throughout Barton Memorial Hospital, Lake Tahoe Surgery Center, Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, and the Barton Community Health Center.
Over 10,000 Liberty Utilities customers without power in South Lake Tahoe

9:23PM UPDATE: Power has been restored to the region and there are no areas reported without power.
9:10PM UPDATE: Power has been restored to some areas of the South Shore including parts of the North Upper Truckee Road area, some of Gardner Mountain and Pioneer Trail.
We don't know the reason for the outage at this time.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting 10,814 of its customers in the South Lake Tahoe are without power Tuesday evening.
Crews are responding and they are estimating the power will be restored by around 10:30 p.m.
