LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The majority of National Forest recreation sites around the Tahoe Basin are now open and the 2021 season promises to be a busy one for Tahoe Recreation, the new concessionaire for many of the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit’s (LTBMU) popular campgrounds and day-use sites.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Work has begun to finish two phases of the 3.86-mile long South Tahoe Greenway Shared-Use Trail (Greenway) that will connect Sierra Boulevard to the Van Sickle Bi-State Park near Stateline in South Lake Tahoe.
COVID put a delay on the project because the delivery of materials for the precast concrete boardwalk system was delayed. The Houston, Texas concrete plant contracted for the project had been directly impacted by the pandemic.
Tahoe Bike Challenge starts June 1; Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition clean-up activities planned

The 16th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge begins June 1 for a full month of biking excitement throughout Lake Tahoe. Hosted by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the Tahoe Bike Challenge is a basin-wide celebration of biking and friendly competition to see who can record the most rides. Riders will compete for bragging rights and prizes from local businesses.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Nev. - Homeowners in the Lake Tahoe Basin portion of El Dorado County rushed to get their vacation home rental (VHR) permits before the cap of 900 was met and any new clustering rules were added to the ordinance. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been two Sundays since the right-turn bans have been placed on North Upper Truckee and Sawmill roads. And during those two Sundays, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has issued verbal and written warnings for making a right turn to head west on US50 during 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on May 16 and May 23. The right-turn ban will also be in effect on holidays including Memorial Day May 31.

Lake Tahoe Community College to hold traditional in-person graduation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With COVID-19 cases falling and more community members receiving the vaccine, Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is able to host a more traditional, in-person graduation ceremony this year on its soccer field.
Commencement will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 25, with limited guests and college staff, and faculty on hand to celebrate the Class of 2021’s remarkable achievements. Students who graduated last year with the Class of 2020 are also welcomed back to this year’s ceremony to enjoy a more traditional event with their loved ones.
Former Truckee resident, who was a UC Davis and Olympic veterinarian, sentenced for tax evasion

Former Truckee resident Jack Ray Snyder, 63, now of Wellington, Florida, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb to six months in prison, six months home detention and a $30,000 fine for tax evasion, Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
Snyder was also ordered to pay $134,497 in restitution. He faced a possible five years in prison and $100,000 per each of the eight counts in the original indictment.

Two sent to hospital after Spooner Summit crash

On Sunday, May 23, at approximately 5:25 p.m., two cars collided at the intersection of US-50 and SR-28, sending both drivers to the hospital via ambulance.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP), the driver of a red 2003 Subaru Forester was traveling southbound on SR-28 and failed to obey the posted stop sign at the intersection with US-50. At that same time, a black 2004 Nissan Xterra traveling westbound on US-50 struck the left side of the Forester.
One of the drivers had minor injuries and the other had non-life-threatening injuries, according to NHP Tropper Hannah DeGoey
Men arrested during human trafficking operation in Stateline

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Three adult men were arrested in Stateline Friday after an undercover human trafficking operation was conducted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), Reno Police Department Human Exploitation and Trafficking (HEAT), and the Nevada Department of Investigation.
On Friday, May 21, 2021, DCSO arrested the three men who allegedly contacted undercover detectives believing they were underage minors for the purpose of having sex with the minors. The operation occurred in the casino core of Stateline, Nevada.
50th graduation class from Western Nevada College includes local residents

Western Nevada College will celebrate the achievements of its 2020-21 graduates on Monday and Tuesday in Carson City and May 27 in Fallon. Collectively, the three drive-through ceremonies will honor 641 students who are approved to receive 669 degrees and certificates of achievement.
One of WNC’s largest Jump Start graduation classes — 140 — will be celebrated as these students graduate with an associate degree as they are graduating from high school.

Over the past 15 months, the COVID-19 pandemic quickly changed our delivery of health care. As health systems and communities focused on managing the pandemic, people began to forgo their normal preventive care. Additionally, mental health concerns due to isolation and other social changes as a result of the pandemic became apparent. Addressing mental health issues is a high priority for Barton Health and as it is frequently identified as an area of need in our Community Health Needs Assessment.

Spinal stenosis is a very common, but potentially debilitating, condition. Stenosis is a generic medical term for narrowing. Stenosis in your heart's blood vessels can lead to a heart attack. Stenosis in your esophagus can lead to choking, in addition to other instances in the human body. Spinal stenosis occurs when your spinal canal narrows and puts pressure on the nerves which travel through the spine, resulting in back and leg pain, numbness or tingling.

Homewood Resort adds electric boats and charging station at the marina

HOMEWOOD, Calif. - The first on-the-water Electric Boat (EB) charging station on Lake Tahoe is now open at Homewood Resort's Marina on the West Shore. Following in the footsteps of the automotive industry transition to electric vehicles, the boating industry is now moving in the same direction. Starting June 1, Homewood will also have electric boats available to book.
Homewood Resort, and its management company JMA Venutres LLC, are leading the transition and building on its track record of environmental stewardship.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - In less than a month, the State of California is slated to fully reopen the economy with the removal of mask mandates and the color tiered system that has been in place to orchestrate what could, and could not, be done at the height of the pandemic.
Until June 15, El Dorado County remains under state mandates, and the Board of Supervisors reminds residents that it is the "Governor’s Administration which determines COVID-19 related restrictions and guidelines."

Teri passed away in her home on Dec. 29, 2020. She had called South Lake Tahoe since 2007 and loved this area and serving the community in many ways. She loved the outdoors and the mountains in particular. She will be missed by her family and friends.

The Sierra State Parks Foundation has announced the 2021 opening date for the 2021 season for California State Parks at Lake Tahoe. Facilities will be open from May 29 (Memorial Day weekend) to September 31.
The following parks and campgrounds are to reopen on May 29:
- Sugar Pine Point State Park and Visitor Center
- Hellman-Ehrman Mansion Tours anticipated reopening June 15
- D.L. Bliss State Park and Visitor Center

Barton Foundation's COVID-19 respond fund provides over $420,000 in food assistance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Barton Foundation’s COVID-19 Response Fund was started in March 2020 to assist local families and individuals facing food insecurity challenges brought on by the pandemic.
The fund has resulted in over $420,000 in donations to over 6,000 residents through the South Lake Tahoe and Stateline area.
Bill David Russell ~ August 25, 1930 – March 20, 2021

Early Saturday morning on the first day of Spring our father, Bill David Russell, went home to his heavenly father and joined the love of his live, Ann Amelia Russell, who proceeded him in death 21 years earlier. He is survived by his three sons and their wives (Alan / Nancy, Gary / Marja and Steve / Donna), 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Bill was born to Harry and Katie (Hornbeck) Russell on Aug. 25, 1930 in Klamath Falls, OR. He was the youngest child in a family of 10 children (with 3 sets of twins).

Clean Tahoe will supply the supplies. Volunteers pick up in their neighborhoods and report the amount of trash collected.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council unanimously approved the formation of a new five-member Police Advisory Commission for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) during its meeting Tuesday evening.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County is reporting 6 more residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday: 0 from Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, 1 in El Dorado Hills, 2 in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, 1 in North County, -1 in Greater Placerville, 2 in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, 1 in South County, 1 in Lake Tahoe region. Awaiting address confirmation from today's count: -1. Total now awaiting address confirmation: 96.
South Shore 4th of July fireworks canceled for 2021

STATELINE, Nev. - There will be no fireworks celebrations at Lake Tahoe this 4th of July. The Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority announced Wednesday they will be canceling the 2021 Fourth of July “Lights on the Lake” fireworks display following months of careful discussion and consultation with area partners.
This follows the decisions by organizers of North Lake Tahoe and Incline Village fireworks shows to not hold them this year.
