One year since first COVID-19 case in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - One year ago the El Dorado County health officer announced the first case of community transmitted COVID-19 in an county resident. Prior to that date two other residents had been found to be positive for the coronavirus, both being exposed while traveling outside of the area.

LTCC to resume limited, in-person student services and face-to-face classes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With local coronavirus cases falling and vaccines becoming more widely available, Lake Tahoe Community College is bringing back limited, in-person student services and face-to-face classes to campus in the days and weeks to come.

Stateline COVID19 vaccine clinic opens up to other eligible occupations

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Thursday, March 25 at Stateline has opened up available appointments to those who are currently eligible for vaccination in the Quad-County Region. Food industry and hospitality workers are also eligible.

The event is by appointment ONLY. This is for all Quad-county residents and workers 16-years-old and above who are eligible for vaccination. The Pfizer vaccine has been authorized for use in those 16 years and older.

Vaccine clinic for Douglas County food service and hospitality workers to be held in Stateline

There will be a COVID-19 vaccine clinic in Stateline on Thursday, March 25 for those working in the hospitality and food service industry in the Quad-Counties (Douglas, Carson City, Lyon and Storey). Any working in those industries on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe but living on the California side are eligible, and those living in Quad-Counties and working in El Dorado County. Proof of employment is required.

El Dorado County could move to Orange Tier in one week

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County might be moving down to the Orange Tier of the California reopening plan next week. The county currently meets the three criteria metrics for the less restrictive tier and if current case and positivity levels remain stable the county will shift on March 31.

Kenny Chesney postpones 2021 tour stop in Lake Tahoe - pushed to 2022

STATELINE, Nev. - With the cancelation of the 2020 Outdoor Music Series at Harveys Lake Tahoe due to the pandemic, many of the scheduled shows were pushed to 2021 in hopes groups could once again gather.

Kenny Chesney was one of those acts and he has announced the postponement his whole tour to 2022. His 2020 dates in Lake Tahoe had been moved to June and July of this year, and they will be rescheduled to dates yet unannounced.

If you have purchased tickets for the original or previously rescheduled dates, your tickets will be honored at the newly rescheduled dates in 2022.

Twelve homeowners fined in first two months of Measure T VHR ban in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In the first two months of 2021, 102 vacation home rental (VHR) permits have expired under the terms of Measure T. The 2018 voter-initiated measure phases out all VHRs in residential areas of the City of South Lake Tahoe, with the expiration date being their permit renewal date this year.

Starting in 2021, the measure allows for unlimited rentals in commercial zones and in the tourist core, and permanent residents are still able to rent out their homes for up to 30 days per year.

Guest at Harrah's Lake Tahoe wins over $250,000 on progressive three-card poker table

STATELINE, Nev. - A player visiting Lake Tahoe on March 18 hit the Mega Progressive Jackpot on Three Card Poker at Harrah's for $251,175. The Caesars Reward member, who won chose to remain anonymous, was visiting from Orangevale, Calif.

The lucky guest wasted no time getting off to a hot start and clinching a win of their own by scoring a Straight Flush on the first hand dealt.

Snowmobiler dies after 900 foot fall off cliff northwest of Lake Tahoe

A snowmobiler died Saturday after falling from the edge of a ridge above Frog Lake. The Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) said a group of three people were snowmobiling near the Frog Lake Cliffs around 1:45 p.m. when one of them got off their sled, not realizing how close they were to the overhanging cornice on the edge of the ridge, according to SAC. The weather made visibility difficult and the light was very flat, making it hard to see the edge of the ridge which is at an elevation of 8600 feet.

South Tahoe High Girls Soccer now 3-0; beats Hug at first home game

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow cleared in time for the South Tahoe High School (STHS) Lady Vikings to win both their Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer games Friday, the second week for both teams to come out on top.

The STHS JV played a game against North Tahoe and won 2-0. Giulia Lancellotti scored a goal from a direct kick, and Olivia Kwachak Hall scored off a steal. Molly Adams and her backline earned their first shutout, said Coach Julia Russell.

Varsity took on Hug at their first home game of the modified season.

Suspect arrested after person stabbed and police car window smashed in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 24-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe is under arrest after a stabbing on Sunday.

At about 10:20 a.m. March 21, 2021, South Lake Tahoe Police dispatch received a 911 call about a stabbing in front of the 7-11 located at 3923 Pioneer Trail. The stabbing victim said they were standing at the Red Box DVD rental machine in front of the store when an unidentified male jumped on his back and stabbed him with a metal dry-wall saw.

The victim was able to get the suspect off his back, at which time the suspect fled the scene on foot.

Public health agencies collaborate on new mini-documentary about vaping epidemic

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Partnership Douglas County (PDC) in collaboration with public health agencies, substance use prevention coalitions and DreamPilot Films, announced the first of two mini documentaries on youth substance use in Nevada as part of a 2021 Nevada Youth Advocacy series.

Operation School Bell helps local students with clothing needs and books

To help children with new school clothes, volunteers from the Assistance League Sierra Foothills visit South Lake Tahoe each Fall to take local children shopping.

On the big day, the chosen students get a shopping voucher for $70 if in grades K-5, and $100 in middle school and hit the aisles for school-related clothing including shoes, pants, sweaters and other needed items. They also get to pick out a book of their choice and they all leave with a huge bag of new clothes, wide grins and a renewed sense of confidence.

The new clothes also help with the children's self-esteem.

Premium may be in the name, but is it in the game? It was Saturday, about half past noon, as my next-door neighbor and myself are watching the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta. He had just acquired a massive, 75-inch LG TV. Even as the affordable model, it was mind blowing to watching racing and basically anything on. Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe Friday, chance rain/snow as system departs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There a Lake Wind Advisory in place through Friday night in the Lake Tahoe Basin, calling for southwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Waves 2 to 3 feet are possible.

There is another chance of rain and snow Friday and into early Saturday before the system heads out, leaving a calmer, mostly sunny weekend.

Planning Commission approves new building project at the Y in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The major design review and special use permit for a housing project at the "Y" were unanimously approved Thursday by the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission, one that will bring six two-story units to 906 Emerald Bay Road.

Final Lake Tahoe Regional Transportation Plan released

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has released the final draft of the Lake Tahoe Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). There is broad consensus that the Tahoe Region needs a transportation transformation to meet growing travel demand, better serve residents, and support the regional economy, the agency said today.

Suspect in custody after standoff at South Lake Tahoe motel

1:30PM Update: The suspect who fired on police in an early morning standoff has been identified as 23-year-old Joseph Hill from Orangevale, Calif. The suspect remains in stable condition at Barton Memorial Hospital and is still being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Clothiers say goodbye to community after honoring daughter on 13th anniversary of tragic accident

On March 20, 2008, Emily Clothier, a 14-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident, was training with the Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation when she struck a tree on the Stagecoach Trail. The South Tahoe High freshman was care-flighted to Barton but it was too late and she died from her injuries.

This Saturday, March 20, 2021, Emily's parents Steve and Patti will be honoring their daughter on the 13th anniversary of her death with a quick gathering at 1:30 p.m. on Emily's Run.

Challenges of getting food to South Lake Tahoe students during the pandemic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Before schools were shut down in March, 2020 due to the pandemic, the 3,680 students registered in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) were able to have daily hot lunch and breakfast at school or delivered by school bus, should they desire.

Then COVID-19 hit, schools closed and people stayed home. There was worry that the 30 million school children in the United States getting free or reduced meals at school would go hungry.

That wasn't going to happen in South Lake Tahoe.

Conservancy commits $1.4 million to forest health projects

At its virtual meeting today, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board discussed building community and climate resilience with state and federal partners, and authorized $1,358,500 for three projects to reduce wildfire risk and improve forest health in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot anchored a panel of state and federal executives for a discussion with the Conservancy Board. The panel addressed how to further integrate sustainable communities, racial equity, tribal co-management, and other state priorities into regional efforts in the Basin.

Tahoe National Forest approves marquee additions to Truckee trail network

TRUCKEE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest has recently approved the East Zone Connectivity Project authorizing construction of marquee additions to the Truckee trail network. New trail construction will occur on the west slope of the Verdi Range adjacent to Boca and Stampede Reservoirs near Truckee, Calif.

Specifically, the Connectivity Project approves:

The construction of seventy miles of motorcycle single-track, including key connections to the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and the community of Verdi, Nev.

Edward Miller marks 39th year on Meeks Bay Fire Protection District Board

Rain, snow and wind on tap for the Lake Tahoe Basin Thursday-Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A late season winter storm will bring gusty winds, mountain snow and rain to the region mid-day Thursday and lingering into Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno issued a weather statement concerning the latest system to reach Lake Tahoe:

Rain and high elevation snow will push into the Sierra and northeast California by mid-day Thursday, with the highest precipitation rates late Thursday afternoon and evening. There will be a sharp rain shadow with limited spillover into western Nevada until late Thursday night into Friday.

City's communication manager leaving South Lake Tahoe for Louisiana position

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The man responsible for changing the way the City of South Lake Tahoe communicates with the media and public has submitted his resignation.

Chris Fiore, the City’s communication manager, is leaving April 1 after being appointed to a position at the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

California renters and landlords can get now relief for rent debt

With as many as 1.5 million California renters behind on rent and at risk of eviction because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program was launched Monday and will serve as a lifeline to renters and landlords. It clears accumulated rental debt, keeps the hardest-hit families in their homes, and will lead to a more equitable economic recovery.

Due to forecast, Barton postpones March 19 community clinic

The planned Lake Tahoe Community College Vaccine Clinic for second doses on March 19 has been rescheduled. Due to forecast inclement weather, the COVID-19 vaccine clinic will be rescheduled to dates between March 23-April 14.

This clinic was for those who received their first doses at the college in February.

Barton Health will hold smaller clinics for those originally scheduled for March 19 second doses. They will take place at 1111 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe. Even with the change of dates the second dose will still be within the CDC guideline window.

One Tahoe Keys well down due to uranium levels - no landscape irrigation allowed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One well of the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) has been taken off line due to too much naturally occurring uranium in the water and there is high probability a second one will be shut down April 1, 2021.

Due to this situation, TKPOA has informed all homeowners that landscape irrigation will be banned in the Tahoe Keys from April 1 to November 1, 2021.

Uranium in Well #2 exceeded the Maximum Contaminate Level (MCL) of 30 parts-per-billion (ppb) for uranium and it was taken off line in December 2020.
