Audrey Pearl Shirts, born August 12, 1934, quietly passed away on August 12, 2024, her 90th birthday. Her children, Len and Paula, and their spouses, Franziska and John, were with her.
Audrey’s early years were spent with her parents, Art and Sue Jones, and brothers Claude and Harry, in Bear Lake, Michigan. The family relocated to Southern California in 1939, and Audrey graduated from Redlands High in 1952.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. – Algae in Lake Tahoe has been a hot topic this summer. While these tiny organisms are a natural part of Tahoe’s aquatic ecosystem, algae can become a harmful algal bloom, or HAB, under the right conditions. No HABs have been detected in Lake Tahoe this summer, but this time of year is when to be on the lookout when warm, shallow water increases the likelihood for HABs. For everyone who enjoys the region’s lakes, rivers, and creeks, it’s important to know how to spot a HAB, where to report your sightings, and what to do to keep yourselves, your pets, and others safe.
Four long-time locals started a new feature for South Tahoe Now this summer, and they'll be continuing as long as there is a Happy Hour somewhere! The "Happy Hour Hot Shots" will visit local eateries from time to time and report on their Happy Hour experiences in South Lake Tahoe.

UPDATE 9.3 at 9 PM: The Bear Fire has grown to 2,000 acres. The combination of warming temperatures, dry fuel conditions, and strong winds intensified the fire's behavior today. Fire crews are working tirelessly to establish containment lines, while aviation resources are actively engaged in delivering retardant and water drops. Winds tonight are expected to remain steady from the west at around 10 mph. Due to the increased fire activity, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has expanded evacuation warnings to include zones SIE-E058 and SIE-E059.

Red Flag Warning: Expect gusty winds and low humidity for the Tahoe Basin, Southern Sierra Front, and Western Lassen County.
Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An estimated 60-70 people took over the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Al Tahoe Blvd. on Saturday to protest Measure N, the proposed $6,000 vacancy tax on November's ballot.
There were new and long-time locals and second-home owners carrying signs side-by-side during the event that was organized by local business owner Erick Asbury. He also paid for the signs people carried.
"It was very positive and everyone was very happy to be out there," said Councilmember Tamara Wallace who was out on the corner with husband Duane.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Despite the unexpectedly chilly and wild weather in August, the 7th annual Tahoe Brewfest on Ski Run Blvd. was a tremendous success, raising over $125,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. On Saturday, August 24, more than 40 local and regional breweries showcased their craft beer, kombucha, cider, and spirits. More than 2,000 attendees were at the event, traveling from across the globe, representing 21 states as well as countries such as Japan and France.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two South Lake Tahoe residents fought Saturday evening, with each getting stabbed and transported to Barton Hospital. South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the wooded area near Kyburz Avenue and US50 near the Lake Tahoe Airport at about 5 p.m. on August 31.
SLTPD is investigating and there are not many details available at this time, but so far what is known is that one of the victims called 911. Both men were transported to Barton Hospital with undisclosed injuries, but SLTPD said they are stable at this time.
Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Sand Harbor and Cave Rock boat ramps will shift to winter operating hours. The new schedule will see both boat ramps open daily from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sand Harbor's boat ramp will now be open seven days a week.
To ensure all boats are properly inspected and sealed by the 4:30 p.m. closing time, we strongly recommend planning to pull your boat or jet ski from the water by 4:00 p.m. This will provide boat inspectors with sufficient time to complete the necessary sealing process.
NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.
The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.
Utility work is scheduled along the shoulders of both directions of SR-28 at the following locations and times:
The Barclay family is sad to announce the passing of Douglas Barclay. He passed in South Lake Tahoe on August 21, 2024. He was the beloved husband to Hellen Barclay and father to Prince Obere.
The funeral service will be held on September 5, 2024, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. at 10 a.m. A reception will immediately follow in Grace Hall.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A 41-year-old woman has been arrested as the suspected arsonist in three separate fires that were set in Placerville. CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers, assisted by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lacy Young of Waterford on Thursday, August 29 for starting the fires earlier in the day in the area of Fort Jim Road and Newtown Road.
EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There was a fatal climbing accident at Lover's Leap, Twin Bridges on Thursday afternoon. A 30-year-old woman fell while climbing with her partner and died from her injuries, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
On August 29 at about 5 p.m., El Dorado County Search and Rescue and the sheriff's office helicopter, Echo 1, responded to the area and assisted with the recovery.

Clean Up The Lake (CUTL) and The Martis Fund have successfully concluded a new pilot research initiative, yielding even more positive results than anticipated. After completing underwater Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) surveys and submerged litter cleanups in Stampede and Boca Reservoirs from June 26th to July 3rd, 2024, the organization is pleased to report extremely low litter loads and no concerning AIS infestations.

South Tahoe MTB/Douglas MTB is a mountain bike team consisting of student-athletes from Lake Tahoe Unified School District and Douglas County School District. They are part of the Nevada North League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).
Many team members raced in the North Tahoe Challenge which was held on trails adjacent to North Tahoe High School. The course was a 4.6-mile lap with 450 feet of elevation gain per lap under dusty and loose trail conditions.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A collision involving two vehicles in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday sent one person to the hospital and jammed up traffic for about an hour.
At 12:07 p.m., first responders got the call about the collision at the intersection of Takela and Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe. Upon arrival, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue had to extricate a woman from the inside of a Toyota Camry. She was transported to Barton Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, according to Sgt. Justin Brock of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

2 red bell peppers, cut lengthwise in half, seeds removed
1 medium red onion, cut crosswise into ¼-inch slices
2 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. olive oil

While these tiny organisms are a natural part of Tahoe’s aquatic ecosystem, algae can become a harmful algal bloom, or HAB, under the right conditions. No HABs have been detected in Lake Tahoe this summer, but this time of year is when to be on the lookout when warm, shallow water increases the likelihood for HABs. For everyone who enjoys the region’s lakes, rivers, and creeks, it’s important to know how to spot a HAB, where to report your sightings, and what to do to keep yourselves, your pets, and others safe.

UPDATE 9.3 at 9 PM: The Bear Fire has grown to 2,000 acres. The combination of warming temperatures, dry fuel conditions, and strong winds intensified the fire's behavior today. Fire crews are working tirelessly to establish containment lines, while aviation resources are actively engaged in delivering retardant and water drops. Winds tonight are expected to remain steady from the west at around 10 mph. Due to the increased fire activity, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has expanded evacuation warnings to include zones SIE-E058 and SIE-E059.

Red Flag Warning: Expect gusty winds and low humidity for the Tahoe Basin, Southern Sierra Front, and Western Lassen County.
Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An estimated 60-70 people took over the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Al Tahoe Blvd. on Saturday to protest Measure N, the proposed $6,000 vacancy tax on November's ballot.
There were new and long-time locals and second-home owners carrying signs side-by-side during the event that was organized by local business owner Erick Asbury. He also paid for the signs people carried.
"It was very positive and everyone was very happy to be out there," said Councilmember Tamara Wallace who was out on the corner with husband Duane.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Despite the unexpectedly chilly and wild weather in August, the 7th annual Tahoe Brewfest on Ski Run Blvd. was a tremendous success, raising over $125,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. On Saturday, August 24, more than 40 local and regional breweries showcased their craft beer, kombucha, cider, and spirits. More than 2,000 attendees were at the event, traveling from across the globe, representing 21 states as well as countries such as Japan and France.
Two men hospitalized after they fought, allegedly stabbed each other
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/31/2024 - 7:49pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two South Lake Tahoe residents fought Saturday evening, with each getting stabbed and transported to Barton Hospital. South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the wooded area near Kyburz Avenue and US50 near the Lake Tahoe Airport at about 5 p.m. on August 31.
SLTPD is investigating and there are not many details available at this time, but so far what is known is that one of the victims called 911. Both men were transported to Barton Hospital with undisclosed injuries, but SLTPD said they are stable at this time.
Cave Rock and Sand Harbor State Park boat ramps transition to winter hours

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Sand Harbor and Cave Rock boat ramps will shift to winter operating hours. The new schedule will see both boat ramps open daily from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sand Harbor's boat ramp will now be open seven days a week.
To ensure all boats are properly inspected and sealed by the 4:30 p.m. closing time, we strongly recommend planning to pull your boat or jet ski from the water by 4:00 p.m. This will provide boat inspectors with sufficient time to complete the necessary sealing process.
Major delays possible between Kings Beach and Tahoe City as Caltrans works on SR28 project

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.
Utility work is scheduled along the shoulders of both directions of SR-28 at the following locations and times:

The funeral service will be held on September 5, 2024, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. at 10 a.m. A reception will immediately follow in Grace Hall.

An all-electric hydrofoil boat skimming along the surface of the lake, using no gas, no lake water, the ability to make tight turns and use "crabwalk," and with no worries about waves or wakes.

CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers, assisted by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lacy Young of Waterford on Thursday, August 29 for starting the fires earlier in the day in the area of Fort Jim Road and Newtown Road.
Woman dies in fall at Lover's Leap in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/30/2024 - 3:36pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There was a fatal climbing accident at Lover's Leap, Twin Bridges on Thursday afternoon. A 30-year-old woman fell while climbing with her partner and died from her injuries, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
On August 29 at about 5 p.m., El Dorado County Search and Rescue and the sheriff's office helicopter, Echo 1, responded to the area and assisted with the recovery.
At this time there is no further information that will be released. When more information becomes available this story will be updated.

The title of Toogee's talk is "Black Bears in the Basin." This will be the first time he is visiting the stage at Taylor Creek.

Positive results following Clean Up The Lake’s research in Stampede and Boca Reservoirs

After completing underwater Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) surveys and submerged litter cleanups in Stampede and Boca Reservoirs from June 26th to July 3rd, 2024, the organization is pleased to report extremely low litter loads and no concerning AIS infestations.

Many team members raced in the North Tahoe Challenge which was held on trails adjacent to North Tahoe High School. The course was a 4.6-mile lap with 450 feet of elevation gain per lap under dusty and loose trail conditions.
Two-vehicle crash jams up traffic in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A collision involving two vehicles in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday sent one person to the hospital and jammed up traffic for about an hour.
At 12:07 p.m., first responders got the call about the collision at the intersection of Takela and Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe. Upon arrival, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue had to extricate a woman from the inside of a Toyota Camry. She was transported to Barton Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, according to Sgt. Justin Brock of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
