DCSO asking for public assistance after man speaks to children inappropriately at Target
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/27/2023 - 6:15pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the Target store on September 26 on the report of a male adult who had reportedly been making conversations with children and allegedly speaking to them in an inappropriate fashion while inside the store.
These incidents were reported to have occurred on September 20 around 7:15 p.m., and on September 25 at an unknown time.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/27/2023 - 3:02pmLAKE TAHOE, Nev. - “Surfaced,” a new art installation created with more than 450 pounds of items recovered from last year’s 72-mile scuba cleanup of Lake Tahoe, was unveiled Wednesday at the new Tahoe Blue Event Center.
The art was created by Oregon-based and internationally recognized artists Joel Dean Stockdill and Yustina Salnikova of Building 180.
Prescribed fire operation near Tahoe City brings large plume of smoke
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/27/2023 - 1:26pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a large prescribed fire operation at Burton Creek State Park with a large plume of smoke, causing concern from people around Lake Tahoe. As announced, California State Parks is working on a large hazardous fire fuels project requiring the implementation of prescribed fire within the wildland-urban interface of their park regions.
On Wednesday, 20 acres were ignited and another 20 acres is expected to be ignited on Thursday, and 21 on Friday.
Tahoe Beach Club's Alpenglow Festival raises over $52K to support local artists and Clean Up The Lake

A significant portion, $25,772, was donated to Clean Up The Lake for the launch of their innovative Environmental Dive Center (EDC) in Incline Village, Nev.
The EDC represents a pioneering venture in environmental conservation. Doubling as both a conservation dive school and an environmental science center.

The American Lung Association says youth vaping is a significant health issue, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 99 percent of the e-cigarettes sold in assessed venues in the country contain nicotine.
Expect early morning traffic delays as NDOT installs traffic signal at US50/Warrior Way

The early-morning travel delays will take place on Sept. 28.
The new light is being installed to enhance traffic flow and improve safety. Since July, drivers have seen daytime lane and shoulder closures as the base of the signals have been installed and other roadside improvements made.

In May of this year, the breast cancer that Nicole beat three years ago returned and metastasized to her entire liver, clavicular lymph node, and bones, she is now in Stage IV. Because of her recent diagnosis, Nicole took a medical leave from the Boys and Clubs of Western Nevada.

Quarry Fire at 1,774 acres and smoke expected to head northeast to the Carson Valley
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/26/2023 - 10:23amThe Quarry Fire in the Stanislaus National Forest was one of many fires in that area started by lightning on September 9. As of Tuesday, September 26, it has burned 1,774 acres of Miwok Ranger District land.
Smoke from the Quarry Fire is visible in the area around the fire and is expected to drift to the northeast to just south of Lake Tahoe and into the Carson Valley south of US50 on Tuesday afternoon. Check out the fire and smoke map at fire.airnow.gov for more information.

City Council to consider ballot measure for taxes to fund affordable housing, snow removal, transit

The Council had asked staff to prepare a report on expenditure plans to show how the City would spend additional revenue generated through a successful ballot measure on housing and/or transit.
They have until June 2024 to decide if they will add a ballot measure to the November 2024 ballot.

Unfortunately, part of the office space that Sierra Child and Family Services have called home for over 10 years was victim to flooding, causing extensive and devastating damage to its operations. Sierra Child and Family Services provides foster care, adoption, and outpatient mental health clinics with wraparound services, and is an essential part of South Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem supporting children and families.

NDOT begins $11M highway project in Gardnervile

Beginning Sept. 25 through mid-winter, drivers will see 24/7 single lane closures and lane shifts on small sections of U.S. 395 between First Street and Waterloo Lane. The majority of lane closures will be short in length, with work zones of a few hundred feet.

Prescribed fires around Lake Tahoe scheduled to resume Monday

If conditions and weather are favorable, California State Parks is scheduled to conduct understory burning on approximately 80 acres over the next three weeks in Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may begin burning piles near Fallen Leaf Lake. Smoke will be present.

Caltrans Lake Tahoe highway project updates for SR28 and US50
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/23/2023 - 10:03pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans will be doing emergency work on US50 next week as well as the continuation of utility work on SR28. Motorists need to be aware of traffic-interfering work and plan accordingly.
Starting Monday, September 25 emergency work will begin to remove and replace damaged sections of U.S. 50 from Meyers to the Nevada state line. One-way traffic control and lane shifts for bi-directional travel are expected between the Truckee River Bridge and Pioneer Trail, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Quarry Fire in Stanislaus National Forest sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/23/2023 - 6:48pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The smell of smoke and hazy skies around Lake Tahoe on Saturday are from a fire burning in the Stanislaus National Forest. Two weeks ago there were 38 ignitions on the Forest from lightning storms. Most are out, but the U.S. Forest Service is letting the Quarry Fire burn within predetermined parameters to accomplish a few goals including reducing concentrations of dead ground fuels, re-establishing multigenerational timber stands, improving wildlife habitat, promoting vegetation diversity, and introducing fire into fire-adapted ecosystems.

This Saturday is National Public Lands Day and a timely reminder of how fortunate we are that conservation programs under the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan have protected open space, set aside approximately 9,000 vacant lots in residential neighborhoods, and added more than a half mile of public shoreline.
South Tahoe Futbol teams do well at CUFA
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/22/2023 - 10:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Futbol Club (STFC) teams did well at last weekend's fall Come Up For Air (CUFA) tournament in South Lake Tahoe with five of the teams finishing either first or second.
The STFC-sponsored event attracted nearly 200 teams on both sides of the state line. The tournament is the local youth soccer club’s largest fundraiser and attracts teams from Nevada, Northern California, and other western states.

Two deaf mountaineers are heading to Lake Tahoe to share the story of their successful summiting of Mount Everest. Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic is bringing the pair, Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger to Outdoor Gear Lab on Friday, October 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Scott and Shayna became the third and fourth deaf people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, with Shayna being the first deaf female!

Fall Fish Fest canceled in South Lake Tahoe due to safety concerns

The event has had challenges over the last few years due to a lack of staff or low water levels.
This year, LTBMU said there were public safety concerns about holding the festival due to anticipated large crowds, limited staffing capacity, and potential human-bear conflicts.

Invasive New Zealand Mudsnails found in Lake Tahoe for first time

The Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program includes comprehensive monitoring of Lake Tahoe for aquatic invaders. Contract divers with Marine Taxonomic Services, Ltd. were underwater surveying invasive weeds on the South Shore and discovered tiny snails on the bottom of the lake nearly a half mile offshore from the mouth of the Upper Truckee River.

As invited guests were touring the new venue located in Stateline, final touches were being finished in the 4,200 - 6,000 seat arena and 10,000 square feet of meeting spaces, well-appointed seating around fireplaces in front on picture windows with views of the lake, Mt. Skyland neighborhood community meeting on fuel break project and wildfire preparedness

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Tahoe Douglas Fire is hosting a community meeting for the Skyland neighborhood on Thursday, September 21 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at fire station 23, 193 Elks Point Road.
The meeting will be held both in person and on Zoom.
Learn about protecting the neighborhood and valuable infrastructure from wildfire and the upcoming fuel break project being installed south of Skyland.

East Shore Trail expansion underway; Donor opportunities with the Tahoe Fund
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/20/2023 - 9:19pmLAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Work is underway to expand the Tahoe East Shore Trail another eight miles past the original three miles between Incline Village and Sand Harbor. The first segment was completed in 2019 through a partnership of 13 agencies and groups and more than 600 Tahoe Fund donors. Together they were able to secure a $12.5 million federal grant to bring the scenic trail alive.
Chase International Foundation awards $12,000 to local non-profits

PTSD NOW! of Incline Village, Nevada, Between Horses and Humans of Gardnerville, Nevada, and Escobar Martial Arts Club in South Lake Tahoe, California, were presented with donations from the Foundation’s bi-annual grant process.
City Manager appoints Hilary Roverud as South Lake Tahoe Assistant City Manager

Roverud, who most recently had been the City's director of development services, will bring her extensive experience in local government and commitment to community development to help lead the city in achieving its vision for the future.
City Manager Irvin, who oversaw the selection process, expressed his enthusiasm for her appointment.

El Dorado County BOS vote to rescind proclamation for American Christian Heritage

September 23 is 33rd annual National Public Lands Day - free admission, volunteer opportunities
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/19/2023 - 9:53pmThere are five days every year that the National Park Service offers free entrance to more than 400 National parks that charge an entrance fee. This includes free entrance to Joshua Tree or Death Valley and free parking at Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.
The next free day at National Parks is on Veterans Day, November 11.
