SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The phasing out of Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in the city of South Lake Tahoe began on January 1, 2021 per the guidance of Measure T, the voter approved initiative to move the popular lodging choice out of neighborhoods and into commercial and tourist areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new work development program is being created to inspire local youth to pursue career paths in natural resources, forestry, recreation, environment, and related fields. A partnership between the City of South Lake Tahoe's Parks and Recreation Department, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Lake Tahoe Community College and Sierra Nevada Alliance has been created to design and implement the work development program.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a windy start to the week in South Lake Tahoe with a Lake Wind Advisory in effect from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday. Expect winds from the southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph and wave 2-3 feet.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In honor of Autism Awareness month, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its newly wrapped vehicle with vinyl decals to increase awareness throughout the community surrounding Autism Spectrum Disorder and bring attention to their Autism Recognition Alert Program.

For the second year, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped a patrol car with colored puzzle pieces as an inviting way for children and adults with autism to meet police officers in a casual setting.

The Alzheimer's Association provides free online classes to help people understand dementia and alzheimers. People may register by calling 1-800-272-3900 or by visiting alz.org and searching by zip code.

They offer recurring classes that are open to everyone. The classes listed below will be offered on the same day and time each month:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The following is a list of the long term and short term projects the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled for the week around Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra and El Dorado County. Update: The South Tahoe High School Drama Department is extending the showing of Almost, Maine for a third weekend. Performance dates are added on April 16 and 17 at 7:00 p.m.

The South Tahoe High School Drama Department presents Almost, Maine a play by John Cariani comprising of nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine.

The play was filmed entirely on the South Tahoe High/Tahoe Arts and Design Academy (TADA) Theatre Stage during COVID-19 and it will be streamed to the public several days in April.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With Friday's Senior Night on the field they've called home for the last four years, Jake Tarwater and Mason Hage know it won't be their last snap. Both players have committed to colleges to continue their school and football careers this fall.

Quarterback Tarwater is heading to Truman State, a Division II school in Missouri, while teammate Hage, a wide receiver, is heading to Ohio to the University of Mount Union, a Division III school.

Tarwater has been able to tour the Kirksville campus and meet his future Bulldogs teammates.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the report of a robbery at the "Y" branch of Wells Fargo Bank, 1032 Emerald Bay Road.

A male suspect had approached a teller, telling them he had a gun, and asking for money. He received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene to the southeast through the Raley's parking lot on a BMX style bike.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County is reporting 2 more residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday: from Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, -1 in El Dorado Hills, 0 in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, 0 in North County, 1 in Greater Placerville, 2 in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, 0 in South County, 1 in Lake Tahoe region. LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Residents are invited to join a free virtual workshop to learn about landscaping to reduce the wildfire threat. Hosted by the Living With Fire and Tahoe Living With Fire programs, with support from University of Nevada Reno, Extension, the workshop will feature presenter, Wendy Hanson Mazet, a certified arborist and Extension plant diagnostician. She will provide tips on which plants are recommended around the home to reduce the threat of wildfire.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - An online Lake Tahoe invasive species boat inspection appointment system will launch on April 1 at 8:00 a.m. This new feature will be used for the drop-in inspections offered by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.

The optional online appointments can be made at tahoeboatinspections.com and are to add convenience and help boaters save time.

Appointments can be scheduled for a $15 convenience fee for any date between May 1 and September 30, 2021.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Al Tahoe neighborhood becomes the first Firewise USA® approved area in the South Lake Tahoe city limits. South Lake Tahoe Fire Resceu (SLTFR) made the announcement Wednesday after being notified the Al Tahoe application approval by the National Fire Protection Association.

The neighborhood joins the Golden Bear and Cold Creek neighborhoods on the South Shore, several on the north and west shore, and a growing number of other Firewise USA ® accredited organizations comprised of residents across the nation who are working to reduce wildfire risk.

The Sierra State Parks Foundation is hosting an exciting virtual Sierra Speaker Series about Thunderbird Lodge with long-time Community Program Manager, Gary Jesch. The virtual event will take place on April 17 at 5:00 p.m. (PST) on the Sierra State Parks Foundation Facebook Page.

The league is open to all players ages 5-16, first-time players as well as seasoned veterans. Minis ages 5-7, Farm ages 7-10, Minors ages 10-12, and Majors ages 12-16.

Online registration opened on March 9 and is underway now and open until April 11. Late registration is April 12-18. The program runs from May 1 to June 20, 2021.

Coaches, volunteers and sponsors are needed.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - With a recent increase in COVID-19 case rates, El Dorado County did not get the green light to move to a less restrictive tier Tuesday during the weekly California COVID-19 tier updates. Thirteen counties were able to advance, but El Dorado County joined Calaveras, Imperial and Napa counties who have to remain in the red tier due to too many new cases. These four counties were all poised to move to the orange tier their thresholds moved above those required for the move.

Thirteen California counties were able to change to less restrictive tiers.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is Lake Wind Advisory in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. Expect winds from the east 20-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

Waves will be 2-5 feet.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Precautions - Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.
