One dead, one in critical condition after early morning shooting in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/07/2021 - 7:20am9:25AM Update: The early morning shooting in South Lake Tahoe has left one man dead and another in the hospital with critical injuries.
Investigators are still at the scene but here is what we know so far:
At 1:00 a.m., several calls were received by the 911 dispatchers about shots fired in the Sierra Boulevard area. Officers responded and found one man with numerous gunshot wounds. He was transported and later died.

Afternoon fire at South Lake Tahoe home

At 1:00 p.m. April 6, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a chimney fire at a home on Lost Sheep Lane. They were joined by Lake Valley Fire
Protection District, CalTahoe EMS Paramedics, and the South Lake Tahoe Police
Department.
The fire started in the chimney and was quickly contained, fortunately not spreading to other homes or vegetation in the area.

Sixteen counties will be moving to less restrictive tiers.
Gov. Gavin Newsom made the announcement Tuesday during a press conference from San Francisco.

Windy start to a mild week in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/04/2021 - 5:11pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a windy start to the week in South Lake Tahoe with a Lake Wind Advisory in effect from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday. Expect winds from the southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph and wave 2-3 feet.
Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
CHP partners with other agencies to stress dangers of distracted driving

To remind Californians of the dangers of not doing so, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) are working together this for Distracted Driving Awareness Month this April.
The facts:
In 2019, 3,142 people were killed in motor crashes involving distracted drivers nationwide according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That is over eight people a day, on average.

For the second year, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped a patrol car with colored puzzle pieces as an inviting way for children and adults with autism to meet police officers in a casual setting.
Tahoe Paradise Park starts fundraising for new project

With 50 percent funding support from the per capita project of California State Parks, Tahoe Paradise Park is currently fundraising to build the matching funds required to complete the new project in 2022. April 9 is the deadline for seniors at South Tahoe High School, Whittell High School and Mt. Tallc High School.
April 16 is the deadline for graduates of Lake Tahoe Community College and the Lake Tahoe Fire Academy.

Two South Tahoe High seniors commit to playing college football

Both players have committed to colleges to continue their school and football careers this fall.
Quarterback Tarwater is heading to Truman State, a Division II school in Missouri, while teammate Hage, a wide receiver, is heading to Ohio to the University of Mount Union, a Division III school.
Tarwater has been able to tour the Kirksville campus and meet his future Bulldogs teammates.

The arrangement increases Barton’s ability to care for more at-risk newborns by providing increased access to UC Davis specialists and experts including a neonatologist, and neonatal specialists within the pharmacy, respiratory therapy and nutrition departments. Barton team members will have access to education opportunities through UC Davis Health to ensure training and new skill acquisition.
South Lake Tahoe bank robbery at Y branch of Wells Fargo

A male suspect had approached a teller, telling them he had a gun, and asking for money. He received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene to the southeast through the Raley's parking lot on a BMX style bike.

Snowpack near Lake Tahoe measured at 83% of average while state comes in at 59%

The Department of Water Resources (DWR) recorded 49.5 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 21 inches, which is 83 percent of average for this location. The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack and is a key component of DWR’s water supply forecast.

Supervisors jockey for piece of tourist occupancy tax pie

Lake Tahoe boat inspection appointments can now be made online
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/31/2021 - 5:41pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - An online Lake Tahoe invasive species boat inspection appointment system will launch on April 1 at 8:00 a.m. This new feature will be used for the drop-in inspections offered by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.
The optional online appointments can be made at tahoeboatinspections.com and are to add convenience and help boaters save time.
Appointments can be scheduled for a $15 convenience fee for any date between May 1 and September 30, 2021.

For this reason, today's case count appears lower than usual*. Also, the number of cases "awaiting address confirmation" has decreased by 13 but do not affect case rates as they were previously reported, now just in the correct area. The death being counted today was from January, and will be reflected on the deaths by day chart accordingly.
Al Tahoe neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe becomes Firewise Community

South Lake Tahoe Fire Resceu (SLTFR) made the announcement Wednesday after being notified the Al Tahoe application approval by the National Fire Protection Association.
The neighborhood joins the Golden Bear and Cold Creek neighborhoods on the South Shore, several on the north and west shore, and a growing number of other Firewise USA ® accredited organizations comprised of residents across the nation who are working to reduce wildfire risk.

El Dorado County to remain in the red tier due to rising COVID-19 case numbers
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/30/2021 - 12:13pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - With a recent increase in COVID-19 case rates, El Dorado County did not get the green light to move to a less restrictive tier Tuesday during the weekly California COVID-19 tier updates. Thirteen counties were able to advance, but El Dorado County joined Calaveras, Imperial and Napa counties who have to remain in the red tier due to too many new cases. These four counties were all poised to move to the orange tier their thresholds moved above those required for the move.
Thirteen California counties were able to change to less restrictive tiers.
Historic Bull Wheel parcel now in public's hands after donation completed
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/30/2021 - 8:30amINCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The donation of the Bull Wheel property at Lake Tahoe has been completed, putting the 18.6 acre parcel into public ownership so it can be used to connect the seven-mile-long Incline Flume Trail from Mt. Rose Highway to Tunnel Creek.
The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Nevada Land Trust announced the donation to the Forest Service Tuesday. The missing link this parcel provides will create an expanded trail system for hiking, mountain biking and running.
Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe until Tuesday evening
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/29/2021 - 10:43pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is Lake Wind Advisory in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. Expect winds from the east 20-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
Waves will be 2-5 feet.
Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
Precautions - Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/29/2021 - 4:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County is reporting 24 more residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since Friday: 0 from Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, 5 in El Dorado Hills, 0 in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, 2 in North County, 2 in Greater Placerville, 2 in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, 0 in South County, 16 in Lake Tahoe region. Awaiting address confirmation from today's count: -3. Total now awaiting address confirmation: 107.
Prescribed fire operations continue around Lake Tahoe

1, Spooner Pile Burn - Nevada Division of Forestry & Lake Tahoe Nevada State Parks. North and east of Spooner Lake. Burn Type: Hand Piles. Total Acreage: 30.00. Planned Ignition: 04/4-4/10/2021. Duration of Ignition and Smoke Production: 4 days. Estimated Direction of Smoke Travel: Northeast/East. Communities or Smoke Sensitive Areas: Smoke may be visible in the vicinity of Spooner Lake and would be seen from both Highway 50 and Highway 28.
