Chain controls and road closures around Lake Tahoe

If you don't need to go out on the roads around Lake Tahoe today you may want to consider staying home and keeping dry.

With over a foot of new snow Friday morning, crews are working to clear the roadways and area highways have been closed a few times due to collisions, heavy snow and avalanche controls.

A look at roads in the Sierra as of 10:30 a.m.:

Highway 50 over Echo Summit is being held at Meyers and Twin Bridges due to a collision. Estimated time of reopening is 11:00 a.m. 10:50 a.m. update - it is open with with chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels from Meyers to Sand Flat/Kyburz. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

State Route 89N is closed at Emerald Bay. On other areas, chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.

State Route 89S from Christmas Valley to Hope Valley requires chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

State Route 88 is closed from Red Lake Road to two miles west of Kirkwood.

State Route 88 in other areas: chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels from CA/NV state line to Red Lakes Road. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

State Route 207/Kingsbury Grade: Chains or Snow Tires Required - on SR-207 from US 50 junction to junction with 206 Foothill Road in Nevada.

Highway 50 Nevada: Chains or Snow Tires Required - on US-50 from Stateline to Carson City.

I-80 from Drum to to CA/NV state line, chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

State Route 28: Chains or Snow Tires Required - on SR-28 from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 11.0 in Washoe County in Nevada.

State Rout 431/Mt. Rose: Chains or Snow Tires Required - on SR-431 from State Route 28 to Thomas Creek Road in Nevada.

State Route 267: Chains Required, All Vehicles Except 4-Wheel Drive with Snow Tires - on SR-267 from mile post 9.9 in Placer County to mile post 3.8 in Placer County in California, Chains or Snow Tires Required from mile post 21.0 in El Dorado County to mile post 8.7 in Plumas County in California.
