Douglas County homeowners have an opportunity to compost their residential yard waste early this fire season when TDFPD hosts a kickoff event for Compost Your Combustibles with coffee and donuts on Saturday, May 23 at 9am. The free annual recycling program which historically has started on Memorial Day Weekend is now open at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Boulder Lodge Parking Lot.
“Fire conditions are extreme this year, and our business partners share our concern, so everyone pulled together to open early and to extend the program adding almost four additional weeks,” explained TDFPD Forester John Pickett. “Homeowners play a huge part in keeping their property and our community safe from a wildfire. This program was designed to help Nevada homeowners do defensible space clean up on their property without having to pay extra trash fees or make numerous trips to the dump.”
Compost your Combustibles is a residential yard waste disposal program for Douglas County residents of the Lake Tahoe Basin. Pine needles, branches, sticks and any other natural vegetation from defensible space clean-up will be accepted from 9A.M. through 5 P.M., seven days a week.
Residents are asked to not bring any material containing weeds in order to prevent the spread of noxious weeds. Pine needles should removed from trash bags and please ensure that the yard waste is free of all contaminates especially rocks. Commercial dumping is prohibited by law; lumber and stumps cannot be recycled and in fact increase the cost of the program.
The drought of 2015 is likely to have a major influence on our fire season, so the closing date has also been extended to Sunday, July 19 to allow our Nevada homeowners and second homeowners additional time to perform their defensible space.
Compost Your Combustibles is sponsored by Heavenly Mountain Resort, Tahoe Village Homeowners Association, Kingsbury GID, F&B Inc, South Lake Tahoe Refuse and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.
Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District is an “All Risk” Department providing Fire Prevention, Fire Suppression, Advanced Life Support, Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Forest Fuels Management, and Emergency Rescue. The dedicated professionals respond to approximately 2000 emergency calls annually. The Fire District currently holds an ISO rating 3/3Y.
