Snow and traffic continue to cause problems on Lake Tahoe roads
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/17/2019 - 2:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.- For the third straight weekend snow has been measured in feet instead of inches around Lake Tahoe, causing issues for both residents and travelers in the Sierra.
When open, there has been a constant flow of both westbound and eastbound vehicles over I80 and US50. Reports of 10-15 hour trips from the Bay Area have been common.

After a week of heavy snow, the National Weather Service has extended the Winter Snow Warning for Lake Tahoe until 7:00 p.m. Sunday night. There is also a Winter Weather Advisory for Sierra Front valleys including Reno/Sparks, Carson City, and Carson Valley through this evening.

I gave it very high marks is most categories especially bang for the buck when I tested it about five months ago. With only a 2.4L, 166 hp inline four-banger, it performed admirably. So, what would happen when Mitsu adds a PHEV battery (12 kwh) to the mix? The answer from my numbers is not exceptional.

South Lake Tahoe schools, including college, are closed Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/14/2019 - 6:39pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District get to start their winter break a day early as they will have a Snow Day on Friday, February 15.
In an announcement Thursday, Christy Blach, the LTUSD transportation supervisor said the extreme weather this afternoon and in the forecast for tomorrow led them to the decision for the safety of our students and staff.
All LTUSD schools will be closed next week for Presidents Holiday Break. Schools will resume a regular schedule on Monday, February 25th.

Travel issues remain around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/10/2019 - 5:30pmLAKE TAHOE, CA/NV - After Caltrans attempted to open I80 this afternoon, it closed again for westbound traffic after a weather cell moved in, causing visibility issues. It is starting to move again but all tractor-trailer combinations are not allowed on I80 due to visibility at this hour.
From Kingvale to Truckee, chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires.
From Meyers to South Lake Tahoe westbound traffic is backing up along Highway 50 towards the Y as cars are attempting to head west over Echo Summit.

Both Douglas County schools at Lake Tahoe, Whittell High and Zephyr Cove Elementary, are closed.

Volvo brought us the XC90 in model year 2003 and it won the Motor Trend SUV of the year. It was a trick vehicle and one of my favorites, especially when equipped with the spectacular 4.4L, 311 hp Yamaha V-8 engine. It was about the perfect SUV with great styling from Volvo designer, Doug Frasher, a man responsible for many great Volvo designs including the S80.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 reopened to eastbound and westbound traffic this morning about 5:00 a.m. with R-2 chain controls still in effect from Point View (just above Placerville) to Meyers.
Expect extra vehicles on the roads in South Lake Tahoe as US50 is the only main artery over the Sierra that is open at this hour.

Drug trafficking pair nabbed in Carson City sentenced to total of 16 years in prison
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/31/2019 - 11:59pmTwo drug traffickers were sentenced today to a total of 16 years in federal prison after a traffic stop in Carson City for speeding led to the discovery of large quantities of methamphetamine and heroin in their car.
Danny Lyle Jensen II, 39, and Kimberly Lopes, 37, both of Henderson, Nevada, were sentenced to 130 months and 63 months, respectively, and five years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Howard D. McKibben. They previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine.

According to the arrest report, Guzman told investigators that firearms stolen from the house of Jerry and Sherri David, the elderly South Reno couple found murdered in their home, were buried in the area of Sedge Road in East Carson City.
Murder suspect allegedly sold property of victims at Carson City pawn shops

Suspect in all four Northern Nevada murders in custody
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/20/2019 - 1:47pmUPDATE 1/23/19 - The suspect in the quadruple murder in Northern Nevada was in the country illegally from El Salvador when he was arrested on January 19, 2019. Tips received by law enforcement led them to Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman, and as they built a murder case they started to tail him. Immigration officials were unaware of Martinez-Guzman until those tips came in.
Officials did not want to lose the suspect and arrested him on immigration charges as the investigation continued and the murder case developed.

Washoe County Sheriff releases names of Reno homicide victims

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office today said 81-year-old Gerald David and his wife, Sharon David, age 80 were killed in their home. Next of kin have been notified.
Both victims died as a result of gunshot wounds, similar to the method used in the two recent Douglas County murders.
Similarities between Douglas County and Washoe County homicides

This was the message from Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam during a press conference late Thursday afternoon.
Two elderly people, a man and a woman, were killed in a home in southwest Reno. Their bodies were discovered on January 16 after concerned neighbors called law enforcement after not seeing the residents. Their names and ages have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Stephen F. Sisolak, Nevada's first Democratic governor in two decades, was elected on Nov. 6, 2018. He will take the oath of office on the front steps of the Capitol Monday at 11:30 a.m., according to his inauguration web site.
Capitol grounds will open prior to the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and a public reception will follow at the Nevada State Library and Archives located on the northeast corner of the Capitol complex.
Tahoe Douglas Fire responds to chlorine leak at Round Hill
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/03/2019 - 6:26pmA leak of chlorine gas at a Zephyr Cove business brought out the fire department the Quad County HazMat team and closed off Elks Point Road near Highway 50 for over three hours on Thursday afternoon.
At 3:00 p.m., first responders from the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (Tahoe Fire) arrived at a research company on Elks Point Road after a call that chlorine gas had been released. Firefighters responded once it was determined that the gas was BCL3 (Boron trichloride), hazardous materials (HazMat) procedures began.

Nevada Gaming Control Board: South Shore casino revenue up over 10%
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/27/2018 - 9:23amGaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of November 2018 showed an increase over the previous year, posting a gain of 6.40 percent with a "win" of $967,168,553 for casinos in the state (up $5.8M) according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
On the South Shore, the $17,136,801 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was up by 10.49 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $8,974,211 in September, up 3.48 percent.

Jason Fritz and Grant Fagen were sworn in at City Hall on Friday, Jason Nixon was sworn in on Thursday as he graduated from the Sacramento Police Academy and John Miller started work in October.
Early morning earthquakes near Carson City

At 5:24 a.m. on December 20 a 3.6 earthquake hit in the area four miles to the SSE of downtown, almost 10 miles northeast of Genoa. Then, at 5:30 a.m., another one measuring 3.1 occurred in the same area.
As shown in the picture this same area has had a lot of seismic activity in the last two weeks. Eastern California and Northern Nevada experience thousands of earthquakes annually so Thursday's earthquakes aren't unusual, just larger than normal.

Carson City woman dies in Douglas County collision

Road controls remain up this morning, no matter where you are in the Reno/Tahoe area. The storm hit the Reno-Sparks, Carson City and Carson Valley areas much more than expected Tuesday night, prompting school delays and roads remain challenging there today. A Winter Storm Warning remains in place until 10:00 a.m.

Most of you know I haven’t been a fan of hybrids, but that’s changing and this new Honda Accord Hybrid has put me over the edge, it’s the first hybrid I have ever driven you can’t tell the transition from electric to gas or even start-up that it is a hybrid. The only clue is the phenomenal fuel economy, extreme quiet and ethereal smoothness. You simply can’t feel the integration of the gas motor coming on line. I would buy this hybrid for this and so many other reasons.
Stronger storm forecast to hit Lake Tahoe Wednesday night
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/28/2018 - 11:39amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm warning is in effect starting at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 and lasting until 4:00 a.m. Friday, Nov.30. Heavy snow is expected, prompting officials to upgrade the storm from a "watch" to a "warning."
Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches below 7000 feet are expected with 3-6 inches at lake level and 1-3 feet above 7000 feet with higher amounts along the Sierra crest according to the National Weather Service. It will be windy as well with gusts as high as 60 mph over higher terrain.

Kingsbury Grade crash sends one to hospital

"The silver Ford F-150 went off the right side of the road and was then redirected, causing the truck to cross the centerline and strike the right front of the black Ford Flatbed truck," said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Matt McLaughlin.

Natasha Schue (NS): What exactly does a physiatrist do?
Dr. Burkard: I see and treat people living with pain. Pain can be caused by one or several factors. Most patients I see have pain from sports injuries, overuse injuries, and accidents that unfortunately resulted in functional disabilities.

The side dishes are being prepared, pies are baked and many are waiting for friends or family to arrive. The football game is on, the Macy's parade is over and maybe you have a chance to sit down and get your feet up.
Today is Thanksgiving, the annual day of giving thanks, celebrating a holiday and enjoying friends and family. The gathered group differs from home to home.

NDOT has new chain requirements on Lake Tahoe highways for 2018-19 winter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/22/2018 - 9:11amLAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There are new chain requirements on Kingsbury Grade, Mt. Rose Highway and Spooner Summit during the 2018-19 winter.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has enacted a change on these Tahoe-area highways and now require any vehicle traveling without tire chains during winter chain restrictions to be four-wheel or all-wheel drive with snow tires. No longer will cars without these distinctions be allowed to cross chain control lines with just snow tires.
