SR89 to close for one day around Emerald Bay

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is alerting the public that State Highway 89 will be closed at Emerald Bay on Wednesday, November 14 from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This closure will allow for a crane to work in the area placing downed trees on the slope for erosion control. Dead or dying trees will be cut down from the area around the project site on Tuesday, November 13 and stacked onsite for placement on the hillside the next day.

Motorists from the north seeking to access the west or south shores of Lake Tahoe will need to detour via Highways 28 and 50 during the full closure.

Over 24,000 ballots yet to be counted in El Dorado County

With a narrow margin in the ballot measure concerning the future of vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe, and other races still close, everyone is awaiting the release of more results from Tuesday's election.

You'll still have to wait a bit longer.

On Friday, November 9, El Dorado County Elections will post the next round of results, but it won't be the last as there are over 24,000 ballots yet to count.

Portions of Powerline Trail to be closed as Liberty Utilities repairs broken equipment

Expect temporary closures on Powerline Trail on Wednesday, November 7 as crews from Liberty Utilities work on broken equipment on a power line near the South Lake Tahoe trail popular with hikers and bikers.

The power line they will be working on crosses the Powerline Trail in a number of locations.

Their work may result in temporary closures on the trail between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Trail monitors will be on site to users to an alternate route in the work area and ensure trail access remains available.

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County election results

Update - 1:20 a.m. 11/7/18: With a large voter turnout the processing of ballots is taking longer than normal. A power outage caused by a car hitting a power line near Blackwood Avenue caused some excitement for voters but did not delay the count as there are procedures in place for such an incident.

New leader hired for South Tahoe Public Utility District

A 26-year veteran at the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) has been hired as the next general manager. John Thiel, P.E., will be taking over for Richard Solbrig who will be retiring in January after almost 15 years at the helm.

The STPUD Board of Directors voted to hire Thiel during a closed session meeting last week.

Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree permits go on sale November 14

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's that time of year once again when Christmas Tree permits go on sale at local Forest Service offices. With a limit of 2,00 permits there is no telling when they'll sell out.

Starting November 14, 2018, The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin selling the $10 permits on a first-come, first-served basis. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter (at the base) in designated cutting areas.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park closes for season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has announced that the gates to Van Sickle Bi-State Park are closed for the winter season. Although the park's facilities are closed, the 725 acre park remain open year-round and are enjoyed by those on day outings, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun in the snow.

The winter closure includes the Park’s gates, roads, parking lots, water, restrooms and trash collection. The Conservancy reminds visitors to pack out all trash.

NDOT finishes ahead of schedule, no more Lake Tahoe road closures this week

The Nevada Department of Transportation has wrapped up the first in a series of overnight full road closures on State Route 28 ahead of schedule.

Officer involved shooting leaves one man dead and two roads closed

10/30 Update: The shooting suspect from the officer involved shooting on October 29, 2018 has been positively identified as 34-year-old Billy Jo Johnson of Gardnerville, Nev.

Next of kin notifications have been completed.

This is still an active investigation and no further information is available at this time.

This major retrospective exhibition, which is at the Reno museum through January 27, 2019, rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman (1869-1950) who is best known for her iconic landscape photographs made in the early 1900s depicting herself and other female nudes outdoors in the Sierra Nevada.

Recreation facilities around Lake Tahoe closing for the season

Several campgrounds, day-use and picnic areas, roads and beaches on National Forest lands around Lake Tahoe are being closed up for the winter season.

Campgrounds already closed include Bayview, Fallen Leaf, Kaspian, Meeks Bay, Nevada Beach and William Kent. Day-use areas and beaches closed include Baldwin, Kaspian, Meeks Bay, Nevada Beach, Pope and William Kent.

The Tallac Historic Site closed up at the end of September though the grounds remain open.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has several road construction projects in the Lake Tahoe area. The following is their list for the week of October 28-November 3, 2018, including alerts on special events in Apple Hill and on SR49.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Lanes of I-80 closed for project Sunday-Tuesday

Caltrans is alerting motorists to upcoming overnight lane closures on Interstate 80 east of Colfax due to continued construction work on the Truck Climbing Lane Project.

Motorists can expect alternating eastbound lanes closures between the Long Ravine Bridge and the Alpine (Secret Town Road) Overcrossing from 8:00 p.m. Sunday until 11:00 a.m. Monday and 6:00 p.m. Monday until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday for water blasting to remove temporary striping.

In addition, the eastbound #1 lane will remain closed until Tuesday when the water blasting has been completed.

Forty years of Freaker's Ball in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe collision sends five to hospital

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Saturday evening collision in South Lake Tahoe sent all five occupants of the two vehicles involved to the hospital.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on October 20, 2018, a sedan was eastbound on Lake Tahoe Boulevard when its driver attempted to make a left turn into the Tahoe Keys Liquor parking lot in front of a westbound Chevy truck, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Travis Cabral. The sedan, with four out-of-town visitors inside was broadsided by the truck occupied only by the driver, a South Lake Tahoe man.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The following is the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) roadwork schedule around Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County.

SPECIAL EVENT - U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from 5 Mile Road to Carson Road in Camino: Eastbound motorists can expect the left turn lanes to be closed at 5 Mile Road, lower Carson Road and upper Carson Road from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 21 and Saturday, October 27 for Apple Hill season traffic. Motorists will be directed to Exit 54/Cedar Grove to access Carson Road.

Elks Club Drive to close for one day for repairs

Elks Club Drive near US 50 will close for one day, Monday, October 15, for roadwork.

The El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation today announced crews will be
grinding three inches of existing pavement, overlay three inches of hot mix asphalt, striping and pavement markings.

Several overnight closures of SR 28 planned near Incline Village

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The first in a series of overnight full road closures on State Route 28 south of Incline Village will take place Oct. 29-31 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) installs bridges on the State Route 28 shared used path.

Domestic dispute leads to arrest after 5 pounds of pot found in stolen car

Two California residents were arrested Monday, September 24 outside the Gardnerville Walmart after the stolen vehicle they had been traveling in was found containing five pounds of marijuana.

Fire near Camino on West Slope closed HIghway 50 on Thursday

10:00 p.m. update: Firefighters have been able to get a containment line around 60 percent of the #MeyersFire in Camino with the total burned amount remaining at 12 acres.

A fire burning west of Lake Tahoe closed Highway 50 near the town of Camino for a few hours Thursday due to the #MeyersFire burning at Meyers and Crystal Springs Roads.

The fire was first reported at 12:39 p.m. September 20, and a quick response by several agencies on the ground and from the air have been able to keep growth down to 12 acres at this time.

SR89 to close overnight in Meeks Bay

Caltrans is alerting motorists to a full overnight closure of a section of State Highway 89 in the Meeks Bay area on Thursday.

The highway is scheduled to be closed from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. Thursday between Meeks Bay Resort & Marina and Sugar Pine Point State Park to allow for a bridge to be installed at Northridge Drive as part of the ongoing bike path extension from the state park to the resort.

Body of man missing in Lake Tahoe recovered

The body of the 33-year-old man who went missing in Lake Tahoe on September 8, 2018 was located by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) and then recovered on Monday, September 17.

Lakeview Drive in Meeks Bay to close for repairs

El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation today announced crews will be
performing road work on Lakeview Drive on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe beginning Thursday, September 20 and continuing through Friday, October 5, 2018.

Lakeview Drive between Silvertip Drive and Saturn Drive, will be closed to
traffic for construction. The closure is necessary to ensure motorist and worker safety while the County’s contractor performs work on Lakeview Drive.

New shuttle and one-way traffic to help alleviate Apple Hill congestion

Fall in El Dorado County means several things, but on the top of many lists is a trip to Apple Hill during the month of October.

Weekend crowds are already heading to the farms, wineries and breweries from Placerville to Pollock Pines, but the thousands of cars that make the trip each week during the month of October have prompted transportation, farming, tourism, safety and County officials to work together to alleviate the weekend gridlock on area roads.

Parts of National Forest reopen as Boot Fire nears complete containment

It has taken firefighters 10 days to contain 98 percent of the Boot Fire. The remaining open line is in the northern reaches of the fire area. Very steep slopes and thick timber made it unsafe for firefighters to work, thus delaying containment.

The fire burned 6,974 acres and at times closed US 395 between Walker and Bridgeport.

With the increased containment of the Boot Fire, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is now able to reopen some of the closed area on the Bridgeport Ranger District.

US 395 and SR 108 open near Boot Fire; Forest closed to public

Firefighers now have a containment line around three percent of the Boot Fire as 6,873 acres have burned. Fire activity moderated yesterday with little fire growth occurring. More than 570 firefighters and numerous helicopters are making headway.

Roadwork to close two roads starting Monday: Elks Club and Waverly Drives

El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation today announced crews will be
performing road work on Elks Club Drive and Waverly Drive in Meyers beginning Monday, September 10 and continuing through Friday, September 21, 2018.

The two roads will be closed to traffic for construction. The closures are necessary to ensure motorist and worker safety while the County’s contractor performs work on Elks Club Drive.

Portions of Spooner Lake and Tahoe Rim Trails to close as forest health issues addressed

With dense vegetation spanning over 300 acres, the iconic Spooner Lake portion of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is increasingly susceptible to environmental disturbances threatening the health of the Tahoe Basin. State officials from forestry, parks and lands announced Thursday the closure of the Spooner Lake portion of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park from Sept. 12 to Nov. 16 to address forest health issues.

US 395 remains closed as Boot Fire grows to 6706 acres

12:45 p.m. update 9/6/18: The Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators have updated the acreage burned in the Boot Fire to 6,706 acres and there is a three-percent containment line.

US 395 from Walker to Bridgeport remains closed as does CA SR 108. There is a detour available through Holbrook Junction.

Firefighters have a three-percent containment line around the Boot Fire which has now burned 4,620 acres in an area along US 395 nine miles SW of Walker and 15 miles NW of Bridgeport.

Reef's Run for Hydrocephalus Awareness in Lake Tahoe Sunday

A 2.5-mile fun run (and stroll) will be held on the South Shore Sunday, September 9 to raise awareness of Hydrocephalus, a condition most have never heard of yet it affects over one million people in the United States.

Runners (and walkers) will start at Shoreline of Tahoe on Kahle Drive in Stateline and end at Round Hill Pines Beach Resort. The cost is $40 for those 15 and older, $20 for kids 14 and under. Those running the course will start at 8:30 a.m., and walkers/strollers start at 8:45 a.m.

Costumes and tutus are encouraged, as well as the wearing of "Hydrocephalus Blue."

As of Wednesday afternoon, 4,142 acres are burning between the North Fire, Sliger Fire and Boot Fire.
