The Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO) and its partners continue their lunchtime forum for learning and sharing ideas that strengthen our Tahoe communities. Topics will focus on transportation, environmental, and economic ideas that are pertinent to issues we face today at Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 3 so all college employees can take part in professional development training. All offices on campus will be closed, including the Child Development Center, the Roberta Mason Library, and the Fitness Education Center.

Our transportation systems are entering a period of accelerated change unlike anything we've seen since the invention of the internal combustion engine more than a century ago. We are in the early stages of a sweeping transformation in how we travel that is driven by the ongoing convergence of transportation and information technologies.

After the passing of the $55 million Lake Tahoe Community College General Bond, known as Measure F in November, the next step was to sell the bonds.

On August 6, 2015, $19 million of Series A bonds were sold at a much better rate than anyone expected. When the market opened at 7 a.m. PST, investors were ready to jump on these bonds and it only took two hours to sell them, and waiting in the wings were another $54.4 million in orders.

The biggest single investor was State Farm Insurance who bought about 25% of the bonds or, $4.7 million.

The public will have a chance to learn about sustainable landscaping in Lake Tahoe at the 8th Annual Conservation Landscape Tour on August 19. The tour will begin at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden and continue down Pioneer Trail towards Meyers Station.

Get inspired to transform your home’s landscape into a mountain oasis at the 8th Annual Conservation Landscape Tour on Wednesday, August 19 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This year’s theme is discovering the many approaches to Tahoe Friendly Landscaping.

Lake Tahoe Dance Connection (LTDC) brings in professional dancers and choreographers for a weekend of dance, top instruction and fun at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The second annual Lake Tahoe Dance Connection will consist of a camp, August 12 – 14, and a Dance Intensive Weekend, August 15-16.

For the full summer dance experience, it is recommended that you enroll in both the Dance Camp and Intensive Weekend; however, registration is available for just one class, one day or either event. LTDC is open to a variety of age groups and levels, although dance experience is necessary.

Two long time community members will share their tales of the history of South Lake Tahoe during the next Fireside Chat on Wednesday, July 15 at 7 p.m.

Roberta Mason will be talking about “How and Why Higher Education Made Its
Way to the South Shore.” Mason was instrumental in bringing Lake Tahoe Community College to town and was a long time member of their Board of Trustees.

Tom Davis will be sharing tales of “How Three Went Out and One Came Back – Boating on Lake Tahoe” and stories of celebrity entertainers who have visited the south shore.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s (LTCC) Annual Commencement Ceremony will be held Friday, June 26 at 6 p.m. on the Community Playfield next to the LTCC Gymnasium. This year’s theme is “Leaving a Legacy,” meant to encourage students to continue to find ways to create and contribute to change in their communities after graduation, and throughout their lives.

Running has advantages. It burns more calories per minute than walking. It’s a powerful stress reducer. Running also reduces the risk for heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and depression. If you’re active and want to try this vigorous exercise, here’s where to start.

Your “Sweet Spot”
Proper running technique is more important than shoes! Try running barefoot. Where your foot lands, usually between your heel and fore-foot, is your “sweet spot.” Land on your sweet spot, roll forward, and push off. Now, try with shoes.

The 2nd annual Cycle Celebration will culminate the Tahoe Bike Challenge where 315 riders made 2,706 trips and covered 17,299 miles in the Lake Tahoe area on their bikes between June 1 and 14. All of those miles saved participants $3,845 in gasoline.

Bellamy Court at the back of Heavenly Village (by the parking garage) will be closed off for the celebration on Saturday, June 20 for a plethora of activities to celebrate biking in Lake Tahoe from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Safety for cyclists and pedestrians is a big concern for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), cycling groups and those enjoying these activities.

In the last six years, 12 people have died in South Lake Tahoe while cycling or walking. In that same time, 42 people were injured while riding bikes on the road while 37 pedestrians were hurt.

The high-energy, smash hit and award-winning musical Pippin will be on the Lake Tahoe Community College Duke Theater stage June 12 through the 20th.

The school's Theatre Arts Department presents show with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz who was the composer of the hit Broadway musicals Wicked and Godspell.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation’s Speaker Spotlight Series continues on Monday, June 1 at 6 p.m. in the Board/Aspen room inside the library building. In the spotlight will be Dr. Beachy Orr, LTCC’s longtime Biology and Anatomy & Physiology instructor. All members of the community are welcome to this free event, and refreshments will be available.

Raul E. Moreno Campos, a doctoral candidate and teaching fellow at UCLA’s Department of Political Science, will be at Lake Tahoe Community College on Tuesday, May 26 at 12 p.m. Campos will give a presentation on “State-Sponsored Violence, U.S. Imperialism, and the Salvadoran Civil War” in the LTCC Commons, inside the main building. This is a free event, and the community is welcome and encouraged to participate.

To help mark the late Malcolm X’s birthday, Lake Tahoe Community College is hosting a screening of his most famous speech followed by a faculty panel discussion on Tuesday, May 19 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room inside the library building.

This is a free event, and the entire community is welcome and encouraged to participate.

Enjoy the Tahoe Legends 5k and 10k runs in beautiful South Lake Tahoe. The trails winds through rolling hills, forests and meadows on single track and a bike path. Competitors start at the Lake Tahoe Community College parking lot and finish on the South Tahoe Community Sports Complex, former home of the 1968 Olympic Trials track. All proceeds from this run support the maintenance of the track and field on this site.

The Barton Health Public Relations department enjoyed hosting the 4th annual Mom's Morning Out on Saturday, May 2. Thank you to all the women who attended and to our business vendors and Zen room specialists for making the event a success!

Students from the art department at Lake Tahoe Community College will be displaying their creations at the annual Student Art Exhibition held throughout the campus from May 17 through June 19.

To kick off the show there will be an opening reception on Sunday, May 17 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with music, refreshments, and a 3:30 p.m. awards ceremony. It is free to attend and open to the public.

The exhibition is showcasing up-and-coming South Lake Tahoe artists who have been enrolled in art classes at LTCC during the past academic year. T

As South Lake Tahoe prepares to host Stages 1 & 2 of the AMGEN Tour of California Women's Race on May 8-9, people are working throughout the community, preparing for all of the events surrounding the world class cycling event.

There is a VIP reception and team presentation at Riva Grill on Thursday, May 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

If you've ever driven by South Tahoe Middle School just as the kids get to school, or as they depart, you know what an unsafe area it can be for students on bikes and on foot. Because of this, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District secured a $154,000 grant from the TRPA On Our Way program to work with the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaborative to conduct outreach and develop a connectivity and mobility plan for the area.

Due to the rising cost of education in the country, more students are finding the value in the California Community College system. In fact, community colleges in California make up the largest system of higher education in the United States with 2.1 million students on 112 campuses.

With statistics like this, the recognition given to Lake Tahoe Community College this week show how unique the local school is now that LTCC has made the list of "Top Community Colleges in California."
