Reno coach jailed after firing weapon at student
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/14/2015 - 5:55pmReno Police arrested a basketball coach Thursday for allegedly firing a weapon at a juvenile near Fred W. Traner Middle School, hitting a house in the process.
Lt. Scott Shaw said police responded to a call of destruction of property and gunfire around 6:30 p.m.
Omarri Calvin Jeron Williams, 25, was coaching basketball at the school on Carville Drive in central Reno. His car was parked out front when somebody informed him his windows were being broken.

Join the music departments of Lake Tahoe Unified School District as they perform "A Veterans Day Tribute" on Tuesday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the South Tahoe Middle School's multi-purpose room.
Veterans of all wars and peace time are encouraged to join the students as they play patriotic music, including service songs, abd the National Anthem. There will be special recognition for WWII, Vietnam and Korean War vets.
The concert is free.

The Nevada State Tournament for both boys and girls soccer teams will be held in South Lake Tahoe Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14. Both of the teams from South Tahoe High are in position to play in the big game, but first they have to place in either first or second place in next weekend's NIAA 1A Northern Championships in Elko, Nev.
Tahoe awarded millions for new bike and pedestrian projects
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/23/2015 - 7:42amThe California Transportation Commission announced this week that it will award nearly $9 million in Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant funding to help complete three major bike and pedestrian projects in the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City.
Members of the Lake Tahoe Bikeway Partnership applied for the grants. The partnership formed several years ago to secure funding for critical trail segments to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety and complete the Lake Tahoe Bikeway, a comprehensive multi-use trail network for the Lake Tahoe Region.

Why you ask?
To understand we need to take a step back in time to the year 1983 when a young Bridey was in 7th grade. She had found the band Duran Duran at a very difficult time in her young life and they helped her cope with a life full of trauma as well as moving from town to town. By the time she graduated high school she had been in 26 schools.

Well, maybe that will be the second thing, first will be buying a home.
Zunino and his wife Nicole are moving to South Lake Tahoe from Oroville, CA where he worked for 17 years, 13 of which were spent teaching and coaching baseball at Oroville High School and the rest as the Vice Principal. Nicole was the school's counselor.

Former NFL players hosting football clinic and camp in South Lake Tahoe

Campers will participate in either hockey or football, or have the option of attending both camps. Former NFL players Byron Chamberlain, Mike Sherrard, and JoJO Townsell will join other coaches and players including hockey standout Michael Finderoff in giving kids a solid foundation in the fundamentals needed to excel in both sports.
Students benefit from Brief Intervention Program in South Lake Tahoe schools
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/30/2015 - 11:39pmStudents at South Tahoe High and South Tahoe Middle schools now have an option to the normal suspension process thanks to the Brief Intervention Program (BIP) developed by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition.
In the past, students would be sent home for three days when suspended for having, or being under the influence, drugs or alcohol while at school. In many instances this method was looked at as a few days vacation with little, or no, opportunity to learn from their errors.

City takes first steps to get out of the ambulance business

Meston wants the City to remain a part of the JPA, but hand over ambulance duties to Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD).
Forty Carson Valley kids spend two weeks in G.R.E.A.T. program

Twenty students from Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School and 20 from Carson Valley Middle School learned leadership, goal setting, and decision making skills in the program. They had the opportunity to participate in the Heavenly Resort Epic mountain ropes course, kayaked Lake Tahoe and completed community service by cleaning up Zephyr Cove Beach.

The day starts off with the Annual South Lake Tahoe 4th of July Parade at 10 a.m. The procession will start at the SLT Recreation Center, to Highway 50 and down to Cardinale Way past the "Y." It will be over by 11 a.m.

Auditions will be held for the Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) production of Aladdin on Monday July 6 at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose room from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Those auditioning should arrive at 10:00 a.m. and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.

On Saturday, June 6, e-waste will be collected by Electronic Waste Management at both the South Tahoe Middle School and during Clean Tahoe Day at South Tahoe Refuse. The company will be at the school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at the dump from 8 a.m. to p.m.
On Sunday, June 7 the company will take collections from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.
Beth Delacour on retiring: I'll miss the kids, they make me laugh

After 32 years working in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Delacour is looking forward to having breakfast with her girlfriends, cooking dinner for her husband ("He's been so supportive"), and enjoying her grandchildren (the fourth one is just one week old). But don't look for her to be just relaxing for long.

Words were said and plaques were given at the Wednesday morning ceremony. Then, the fire alarm sounded and hundreds of students and staff moved out onto the soccer field.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/14/2015 - 5:34pmThere were three incidents in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday that resulted in lockdowns at Lake Tahoe Community College, South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) and Barton Memorial Hospital.
At noon, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received a call concerning a man carrying a rifle, walking away from the area near Barton Hospital towards the meadow behind Grocery Outlet. They did not locate anyone at that time, but this incident relates to the third one received.

South Shore students can receive medical and orthopedic screenings from Barton Health’s Tahoe Center for Orthopedics on Monday, June 1 at the South Tahoe High School Blue Gym.

New Principal named at South Tahoe Middle School

Simons (pronounced sim-mons) was introduced at Tuesday evening's Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board meeting.
Simons is relocating to South Lake Tahoe from Oakdale, CA where he has been principal at the community's middle school for the past seven years. Prior to that he served as the school's vice-principal for three years.
Celebration of Education at South Tahoe Middle School Wednesday

The annual Celebration of Education hosted by the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will take place on Wednesday, May 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.
Last year's Foundation grant recipients will be displaying their projects through words, photos, videos and live performances.
This event will be taking place outside the elementary and middle school concert that will be taking place at STMS during the evening.
Families, students and the public are invited to stop by and enjoy the grant recipient's presentations.

City Council approves motion to apply for $2.1 million transportation grant

Those were South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman JoAnn Conner's words after hearing how several agencies will work together to make the Middle School Connectivity Plan a reality.
Her sentiments were echoed by her fellow council members and the mayor after seeing how multiple agencies can leverage their funds and plan together for a network of connecting trails through South Lake Tahoe that will keep pedestrians and bikers off unsafe roadways.
Routes around South Tahoe Middle School may soon be safer

Because of this, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District secured a $154,000 grant from the TRPA On Our Way program to work with the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaborative to conduct outreach and develop a connectivity and mobility plan for the area.

An Opening Day celebration is planned at the South Tahoe Little League Complex this Saturday, April 25th. A parade and ribbon cutting ceremony are planned prior to the start of scheduled games. The parade will start on the street next to the South Tahoe Middle School tennis courts at 9:00 a.m. with a planned parade path to follow Lyons Avenue to Rufus Allen, and into the major’s field by way of the snack shack entrance. Parking will not be available at South Tahoe Middle School due to the eWaste collection event. Parking is available along Rufus Allen Blvd.
Community helps shape future of walking, biking and safety in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/15/2015 - 9:55pmDozens of community members came to the South Lake Tahoe Library Tuesday night to see what is being planned as an update to the Lake Tahoe Region Bike and Pedestrian Plan and give their opinions.
Those attending were asked to look at the plans displayed on boards lining the room, and give their comments on a variety of issues from safety to connectivity.
People were actively participating, telling the project planners, Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPA) and TRPA, what they felt was most important on infrastructure and goals.

South Lake Tahoe Middle School Connectivity Plan update

The goal has been to create safer, more walkable and bikeable off highway routes around South Tahoe Middle School (STMS), Bijou Park and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). A $150,000 grant from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to the Lake Tahoe Unified School District got the activity in motion.

Soroptimist Writing Festival winners

Each year the members of the club collaborate with the Language Arts teachers at STMS to provide an opportunity for students to express themselves.
Winning essays are selected from each grade level. First place and first place honors winners each won a $75 cash award, second place $50 and third place $25.
Teen dating violence statistics prompt performance art contest and HEART campaign

One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.
One in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.
One quarter of high school girls have been victims of physical or sexual abuse.
Approximately 70% of college students say they have been sexually coerced.
South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park

What is it?
"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.
Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.
Bijou Bike Park on Tuesday's City Council agenda
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/01/2015 - 11:03pmThe Bijou Bike Park will take a step towards reality on Tuesday if the South Lake Tahoe City Council votes to approve the funding and in-kind services staff is recommending.
Members of the Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) presented the original project to the City back in September of 2011, and since then they've been working non-stop in their efforts to create the park. South Lake Tahoe BMX and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association have been helping BBPA in their efforts.
LTUSD may be exclude unvaccinated students from school

Even though there are no cases in El Dorado County as of yet, the cases in Washoe County and Bay Area are of concern.

Enrollment up slightly at South Lake Tahoe schools
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/10/2015 - 10:22pmAfter several years of declining enrollment, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has seen more students sitting the seats of local schools over the past two years.
The lowest enrollment figures were for the school year 2012-2013. When school ended in June of 2013 there were 3,793 students in South Lake Tahoe's eight schools.
When school started back up in the Fall of 2013 there were 3,855 students enrolled. An additional 26 students started off this school year.
