Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/05/2020 - 1:41pmIn a year filled uncertainties and safety mandates, many have been anxiously awaiting the ski season at Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Mountain Resort opened last week, and now their sister Vail property, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, has opened.
As long as allowed, Kirkwood's winter operating plan is focused on comprehensive safety protocols, Kirkwood opened Friday with more than 180 acres of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/20/2020 - 8:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-awaited opening day for skiing and riding in South Lake Tahoe arrived Friday with season pass holders hitting the slopes at Heavenly Mountain Resort. They joined Northstar in being the only two resorts in Lake Tahoe to open. Squaw Alpine opens on November 25, followed by Kirkwood December 4, Sierra-at-Tahoe has not announced an opening date.
Heavenly reported a foot of natural snow from this week's storm added on top of the snow they've been making since temperatures dropped a few weeks ago.
Heavenly Mountain Resort prepares for opening day Friday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 12:29pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Opening day at Heavenly Mountain Resort is planned for Friday, November 20, with ski and snowboard operations exclusive for all pass holders until December 8.
This year there are many changes due to COVID-19 and Vail says their goal is to prioritize pass holders, including those who have the Epic Day Pass. Those with passes need to reserve their day on the slopes as does the general non-pass holding public.
There will be no ticket sales at the Vail ski resorts this season and all is conducted virtually except for sightseeing rides.
Barbershops and hair salons allowed to reopen in El Dorado County

During California Governor Gavin Newsom's press conference Monday, he gave the green light to these two businesses as long as they follow the guidelines he and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) have published.
Following Newsom's announcement, El Dorado County Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams issued a statement.
Edgewood Tahoe opens as Nevada lifts restrictions on some recreational activities
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/04/2020 - 1:01pmLAKE TAHOE, Nev. - When Governor Sisolak of Nevada said some outdoor recreation businesses can reopen, Edgewood Tahoe was ready to go after weeks of preparation to do so in a safe manner.
If Monday's opening day on the greens at Edgewood was any indication, golfers were ready to start swinging their clubs and start getting in rounds of golf. Open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for now, all tee times through Thursday were already booked before the first round was played.

Last year, all three of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Star age divisions were Nevada State Champions. Now its time to start the new season and tryouts are scheduled for March 22 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Depending on weather, tryouts will be held at Todd Fields or South Tahoe High School.
Babe Ruth is a recreational baseball league serving players born on or before August 31, 2007 and have aged out of Little League. Everyone plays.

Caesars Entertainment has teamed up with Ramsay once again and has transformed the old Sage Room in Harveys Lake Tahoe to be the newest home for Hell's Kitchen.

Lift tickets will be available for purchase at ticket windows for just $10, with half of all proceeds to be donated to the Food Bank of El Dorado County.
Operations will be limited, with Easy Rider Express and Rock Garden scheduled to spin, conditions permitting.
Sierra-at-Tahoe plans to open for the season on Saturday

After a slow start to November, Mother Nature has turned on the tap, bringing Sierra two feet of snow and counting in the last 48 hours. This, combined with Sierra’s snowmaking efforts, will allow the resort to open for operations. Conditions permitting, Sierra plans to run Easy Rider Express, Rock Garden Chair and two surface lifts, with access to 2 runs and one terrain park.

They were both planning on opening this Friday, Nov. 22. At this time, Heavenly will target Wednesday, Nov. 27 and Northstar will target Friday, Nov. 29 to open for skiing and snowboarding. Kirkwood will announce an opening date in the coming days.

With registration up 30 percent from last year, the High Sierra Board would like to thank and share the generosity of a local business and service club who are helping the athletes in our league participate to their fullest.
Blue Zone Sports donated 12 softball gloves to the league.

Lime scooters return to South Lake Tahoe with contract, new fees
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/16/2019 - 6:39pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lime is returning to South Lake Tahoe this summer, but with some changes both visibly and financially during a new one-year trial period for 2019.
After much discussion on Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously approved a new contract with Lime that will bring up to 550 scooters to town this season, but, as reported before, the bikes are not returning.
The Council wanted to make sure not all 550 will appear on opening day at the beginning of May and will work with Lime to start slow.

Kirkwood opens with 30" of fresh snow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/24/2018 - 9:54pmIt was opening day of the 2018-19 ski season for Kirkwood Mountain Resort on Saturday and the six inches of snow they received overnight helped them start with a base. The resort has had 30" of new snow since Wednesday.
Lifts started spinning at 9:00 a.m. with eager skiers and riders lined up at the base, awaiting first tracks. Passholders were treated to free breakfast sandwiches before hitting the slopes and all guests had a chance to win some snack, ski and ride gear giveaways.

There was a pre-opening celebration at the base of the Gondola in South Lake Tahoe at 8:00 a.m. Those early risers enjoy music by a DJ, fresh coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts to stay toasty. The rest of the day had live music, ski and snowboard gear giveaways, group photos and food.

On opening day they were plenty of anglers enjoying a fair weather day, where it be from shore or from boat. Most anglers were very successful. I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Tom Blotter. We were on the lake at 6 a.m. and had lines in the water right at the precise moment of opening day. We covered the lake in a variety of depths.

But as we all know, that does not mean it will get any warmer soon. Down here in the Minden and Carson Valleys we've experienced an average of 7 to 10 degree mornings.
Most would think that the higher lakes would be frozen and iced over. I received a report from fellow angler Josh Otto last week. As Josh told me, Caples Lake had high winds and was down right cold and had waves blowing across the lake.
Kirkwood opens for season
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/22/2017 - 10:58pmKirkwood Mountain Resort kicked off their 2017-2018 ski season Friday. They have opened four of their 15 lifts (1,5,6,11), giving access to 250 acres of skiing on 15 percent of their terrain.
Operating hours at this time are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Heavenly is open in South Lake Tahoe, with Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Mt. Rose open on the North Shore. Northstar was originally planning on opening Friday but instead will announce their opening day on November 27.

As this storm moves to the east, South Lake Tahoe should see a high near 42 and wind gusts up to 25 mph. This weekend forecast includes a high of 50 and sunny skies.
Heavenly Mountain Resort received 23" of snow over the last 48 hours, just in time for opening day November 17. On the North Shore, Squaw Valley had 7" in last 24 hours and Mt. Rose reports 33-40" during this storm.

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 11" of snow overnight, just ahead of their Friday opening day. Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows each received 14" from this storm, and 7" at Kirkwood.
Snow is expected at both lake level and at the resorts tonight before the system passes through.
Just in time to wash grime off South Lake Tahoe cars, Sierra Suds opens

In the 1950's, the 23-unit Cedar Lodge was located at 2685 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The motel was eventually demolished and South Lake Tahoe dentist Dr. Jim Getzelman bought the property in hopes of developing it into a car wash.
"We’re trying the best to make this a very clean alternative to washing a car at home,” Getzelman said in March, 2008 of his plans to open the car wash in the fall of that year.

The Loft at Heavenly Village opening soon with magic, food and drinks

The new indoor, year-round live theater is in a newly created space above the current Heavenly Village Cinemas created by PR Entertainment. It will include a bar and lounge, 107 seat theater and Italian restaurant featuring Chef Lisa Devenchezi-Miller, who also owns of Capisce? in South Lake Tahoe.

The new snow totals overnight, combined with both the anticipated snowfall Monday night and snowmaking efforts, have helped the resorts open a week early.
Sierra-at-Tahoe hasn't given an opening date but Kirkwood has put November 21 on the calendar for their big day. Sierra's marketing team told South Tahoe Now that they are getting excited since snow is falling, and plan on opening as soon as possible.
Boreal and Mt. Rose resorts have already opened.

Loreen Sanchez, owner of The Burger Lounge on Highway 89 has opened "The Burger Stop" at the South Y Center between Beach Hut Deli and Starbucks.
Wednesday was opening day, unveiling a full menu including gourmet burgers and hot dogs, fries, salads, 23 flavors of milkshakes and sundaes, freezes, floats, and ice cream.

The Northstar Golf Course opens on May 15 with the rest of the extensive variety of summer adventure following with a May 22 grand opening.

An Opening Day celebration is planned at the South Tahoe Little League Complex this Saturday, April 25th. A parade and ribbon cutting ceremony are planned prior to the start of scheduled games. The parade will start on the street next to the South Tahoe Middle School tennis courts at 9:00 a.m. with a planned parade path to follow Lyons Avenue to Rufus Allen, and into the major’s field by way of the snack shack entrance. Parking will not be available at South Tahoe Middle School due to the eWaste collection event. Parking is available along Rufus Allen Blvd.

Yet, the bar was packed and the outside seating was starting to fill up by late afternoon.
Pete Joseph and business partner, former Navy Seal Greg McPartlin, put a lot of work into the 6,000 square foot found building at the end of the new Chateau and across the street from Harveys.

The resort opened at noon following the recent storm that left more than 15 inches of fresh snow in the Sierra. Skiers and boarders hit the slopes for opening day at Heavenly
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/21/2014 - 9:56pmFriday was opening day at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, and if the crowds that hit the slopes is any indication, the weekend will be a busy one. The ski resort has been busy making snow since the Mother Nature variety has been lacking so far this season.
The resort is reporting an 18" base.
Heavenly Village was full of skiers, riders and families all day. The outdoor dining areas at Base Camp Pizza and Gun Barrel Tavern were busy for lunch and apres ski activities.

A bit of winter in the mountains this weekend
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/25/2014 - 5:32pmThe Lake Tahoe basin saw a glimpse of winter Saturday with snow falling in the upper elevations.
Heavenly, Sierra and Northstar all saw up to three inches of snow this afternoon and a little more is expected as the weather front continues into Sunday morning.
Opening day for Heavenly and Northstar is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/22/2014 - 10:54pmHeavenly Mountain Resort is aiming for a November 21 opening day and a dusting of snow on their upper mountain built anticipation for the winter season.
The 10 day forecast shows a wet system entering the Tahoe basin on Saturday, providing a 60% chance of showers during the day with a rainfall total of just .08". There is a 6% chance of rain on Sunday. A larger storm is anticipated to arrive on Halloween night with 1" of snow and .22" of rain predicted for Friday, .3" of snow on Saturday, .7" of snow on Sunday and .7" of snow on Monday.

Free Drop Off of Combustibles For Nevada Residents
Clear out the combustibles from your yard and drop them off for free at the kickoff event being held for “Compost Your Combustibles 2014” at
Heavenly Boulder parking lot this Saturday, May 24th in recognition of Wildfire Awareness Month.” Drop off days will be held through the first Saturday in August.
Rake and remove pine needles and yard combustible waste to prepare your home in the case of wildfire.
Sierra at Tahoe Opens on Friday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/04/2013 - 5:16pmCold weather and snow this week is allowing Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort to open for the 2013-14 season on Friday, December 6, 2013 with early season conditions and very limited terrain. The ski resort will operate the Easy Rider Express chairlift which will give skiers and snowboarders access to the right half of Broadway trail. This is a green run and will have small to medium rail features, giving guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them.
Opening Day on the Lake Tahoe Slopes
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/23/2013 - 3:06pmAfter winds delayed Friday’s initial opening day, Heavenly Mountain Resort opened for the 2013-2014 ski and ride season on Saturday, November 23. The resort opened the Gondola and Tamarack Express, accessing 14 acres and 1.5 miles of skiable terrain. The resort plans to open additional terrain this next week, conditions permitting.
Northstar California Resort also opened today, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort is slated to open on Monday, November 25, giving access to three Tahoe resorts leading into the Thanksgiving holiday. Sierra at Tahoe may join them, depending on conditions.
